Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio hodarchis Off the Record podcast with Greg.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with Voodoo Blue cureder Rory.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
Hello. Hello, how's it going Greg?

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yeah? Really well, thanks mate. How has the Capital city
been today?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Yeah? Not too bad. The spring weather is doing its thing.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Have you guys got the water under control yet? It's
not still heaving out of the ground, is it?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
I haven't noticed it for a little while.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
It sounds like a nice one. And in between the
last time we caught up, you've released a new album.
We'll get to that shortly, But what else has been
going on in the last few months.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
We've just started sort of recording again. We've done a
couple of shows here and there. But just in the
lead up to this album, I think that we have
all gotten back into a bit of a creative space,
like we want to want to write some new tunes
and get some new things out into the world. So
it's it's been pretty exciting times.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah great, Oh, I can't wait to hear that. But
in the meantime, shall we hear a track off the album?
And I know you guys are all big movie buffs.
Weren't two of the guys in the band actually studying
movies full time.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yea, Yeah, two of the members they went to VIC
to do film, so that's definitely been a big passion
project of at least half of the band there.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
But yeah, And is there one movie that you guys
can all agree on?

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Yeah, The Big Lebowski for sure. That's It's just a
great hangout film. So many iconic sort of scenes in there.
And yeah, I feel like you can never go wrong
with paying attention to that movie, just having it on
in the background. It's always a good time.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
And which one of you is the dude.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Jackson our drama? He is the one who's holding us
all together musically and characteristically, I guess as well, just
always chilled out, knows how to get us out of
a situation if we need to. He's the dude, for sure.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Jackson is the dude. Nice one. Well, the reason we've
been talking about movies is because one of the tracks
on the album is called Cardboard Box Office. Did you
write this one or did the fellas who are into
the movies write it?

Speaker 3 (02:10):
It was just after watching the movie Black Swan. I
don't know why that really inspired me to write this,
but it sort of did. In a weird sense, sort
of a thank you to those guys for introducing me
to so many good films and and just thanking them
for their contributions to the band, even though it's not
really said in the lyrics. Yeah, I guess that's where
the song comes from.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
All right, well let's check it out. It's Voodoo Blue
with Cardboard Box Office. I'm ready, I heard Akia every time.
You'll emulate, you.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Know with a million Jack lab Wister all album, I
knocking brass word?

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Have you marbling by podcasts.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
On way can we come that?

Speaker 1 (03:10):
You know?

Speaker 2 (03:46):
It's Radio Hedache. That's Voodoo Blue with Cardboard Box Office
from their brand new album. And we're lucky enough to
have this singer Rory on a zoom with us now,
Killer Rory, thanks for bringing us that tune.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, yeah, no worries at all. Hope you enjoyed it.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
That's from your late used album.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Absolutely so. This is our third album called Dead End Rodeo.
There are ten tunes on the album overall, our shortest
released yet, but it is packed with the most energy
that we've ever put into a record. It's quite relentless
compared to the other projects that we've worked on. Just
really wanted to make something that was super fun. Every

(04:23):
song as a banger. I couldn't be more proud of it, honestly, And.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
So what gave you guys a sudden boost of energy?

Speaker 3 (04:30):
The first two albums they were quite like, they were
quite emotional, they were coming from a place of deep feeling.
But with this album, we took a bit more of
a reflective look at ourselves and just went, you know what,
we love music when it's just fun, when it's just
about making music, when there's no concepts, when there's less

(04:52):
meaning behind it, when it's really just trying to make
a good track at the end of the day. That
was sort of our mission objective from the g go,
and I think that that's why we ended up with
the with the end result that we did, and it's
one of my favorite things that we've worked on.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Yeah. Cool. Obviously you guys are all in Wellington? Are
you all and Wellington? Because at one stage I think
a couple of the guys were overseas for a bit.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Ollie was in the band, was in New York for
a little bit there, but he's he's now returned back
to the country. So that's pretty cool to have him back.
He's literally only moved back as a couple of weeks ago,
so I think he's getting his bearings and then maybe
we'll talk business from there, but I'll leave that up
to him.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah sure. And have you caught up otherwise? I mean
he must have hit some cool times in New York City.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, We've caught up on a couple of occasions.
It's it's just been nice to have him around again.
Spending a year apart from somebody that you used to
see every week a band practice or at the show.
It's it's definitely a big, chunkier life that sort of
goes away, So it's been been nice to catch up
on things.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Yeah, maybe you'll write a song.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
About that, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I definitely could do.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
In the meantime, the latest album Dear End Rodeo. Where
can we get it?

Speaker 3 (06:03):
It's available on all of your favorite streaming platforms. We've
gotten a couple of requests to put it to vinyl,
so we will be taking those into consideration. If anybody
listening is interested, be sure to let us know on
our socials. We're on Instagram and Facebook and all those
good places.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
And where where do we find you? What's the handle?

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Who is Voodoo Blue?

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Who is Voodoo Blue? And it's Voo doo space bloo.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
That's correct.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, so it all rhymes and looks like at rhymes
rather than just yeah being the color blues not that's
what's the little mascot? Is it a little penguin?

Speaker 3 (06:44):
I I wish that I had an answer for you,
but we worked with a graphic designer very early on
in our career and he put this forward to us.
We all said it looks sweet, and until you've asked
me that question, now, I've never really tried to figure
out what it is for myself. So I guess it's
it's listener of viewers interpretation.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Okay, all right, nice one. Well let us know if
you released that album on vinyl. Rory from Voodoo Blue.
Thanks your time on Hedeki.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
