On Sports Fix with Jason Pine for 18th November 2024, the All Blacks fell just short of beating France over the weekend. One of the big talking points from that game was Cam Roigard being subbed off early in the second half. Former All Blacks halfback Ant Strachan offers his thoughts on whether the All Blacks coaches made a mistake by doing that and whether he had the stamina to go the full 80

Piney offers his thoughts on who he'd like to see get a run in the All Blacks' last test of the year.

And Elijah Fa'afiu joins the chamber to discuss the Wallabies recent run of form and the All Whites in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

You're listening to a podcast from News Talks EDB follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard By News Talk said b.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
By There and welcome into a fresh week and a
new episode of the Sports Fox podcast for Monday, November eighteenth,
I'm Jason Pine. Thanks for listening in lots of talking
points after yesterday morning's narrow one point defeat for the
All Blacks at the hands of France in Paris. One
of those was the relatively early withdrawal of Cam Rouder,

(00:44):
the starting halfback. After just ten minutes in the second half,
he was taken off and courtes Rattima was brought on.
Was that quite early? And what is the strategy the
best strategy around using the Blokes in nine and twenty
one in a Test match and in fact in any
rugby game. Former All Blacks half back and Strawn with
us today to have a bit of a chat about that.

(01:07):
I'll have a look ahead to what I think the
team will be for the All Blacks final Test of
the year against Italy and Turin on Sunday. Elijah far
Field pops into the chamber to kick around some of
the sporting issues of the day as well, so let's
get into it in other news, starting off as per
usual with some of the biggest sports stories around today.

(01:29):
Sri Lanka have clinched the three game One Day International
series against the black Caps with the match to spare.
They've had a three wicket win in Game two and
Candy Pards fifth series.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
Win and twenty twenty four for.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
The Sri Lankans and salutes to the crowd.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
A Kushal menders how sensation.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Of Warren Gatland's Welsh rugby team have suffered a record
eleventh straight defeat on his watch, this time thrashed fifty
two twenty by Australia in Cardiff. Gatland says he won't
stand in his employer's way if they opt to make
a coaching change.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
It's not about man, It's not about that. You know,
what are the best decisions for the games in terms of.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
Game I've taken about that a few time on board
meetings about it enough.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
We're going to do things and new strategies and stuff.

Speaker 5 (02:13):
Sometimes we're going to be bold and pray about making
some decisions.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
And England caretak a football manager. Lee Carsley believes there's
a strong foundation in place for incoming boss Thomas Tukil.
Carsley's signed off his interimstint with a five mil winover Island.

Speaker 6 (02:27):
It's a job that deserves an elite coach. That's the
Scott Truck record of winning. Thomas has got that. The
bonus would be that we've we've increased, like I say,
the Paul of players. So next the next squad will
be a real challenge to pair.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
I'm sure.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sportsfix with Jason Pyne.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
This is the Sports Fix podcast. Plenty of talking points
after the weekends All Blacks France test, the one point
defeat for the All Blacks. One of the talking points
that withdrawal of starting All Blacks half back Cam royguard
after just ten minutes in the second half. Cortez Latimer
came on and endured a challenging half out and it
raised a few questions about the use during a game
of two players the ones wearing nine in twenty one

(03:08):
half backs, the starter and the reserve. Let's bring in
formal All Blacks half back and c'd b Rugby analyst
and strong and first of all on broad terms, is
there usually a pre game strategy for when a reserve
halfback will replace a starting halfback, and you.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
I'd probably say historically the nine is not generally included
in those particular strategies around bringing players off off bench.
Obviously the front row goes without saying bigger boys, Ay're
working harder, a lot faster game nowadays to bring them in.
Obviously the middle row loose forwards as well. And then
you know, obviously the configuration of your back three or

(03:45):
midfield sometimes needs a bit of a tweet. But I mean,
if you look over time, the niners are the ones
that we're probably going the longest in the games. You know,
we're talking about you know, sixty five to seventy even
eighty minutes sometimes, So it's a new phenomenal phenomenon, may
I think. But yeah, I mean it was pretty early,
wasn't it to Paul cam Rouygad. I know he hasn't

(04:05):
played a lot of football this year, but he was
certainly right on top of his game. And I mean,
you know, it's one of the burning creases, isn't it
for most of these calendars today? Have you know, could
he have stayed on a little longer? But curely speaking,
nine should probably stay on longer than you know, sixty minutes.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yeah, and that's kind of I guess what I'm driving at,
Because when a game's tight and an experience halfback is
controlling that game for you, why wouldn't you just leave
the guy on?

Speaker 4 (04:31):
Well? Ye, as I say, I mean, you probably normally do.
The one thing I did notice in the game is
that the New Zealanders we're actually starting to flag a
little bit. I watched Will Jordan for a moment and
I don't know he'd done a lot of repeated efforts,
but he was he was guessed, you know, and when
he's looking a bit tired, and there were a few others,
and then around that back the vision then at Brown

(04:52):
as well, he come on as a replacement. You know,
you sometimes need someone to come on and list them
just I'd be like a fuse, You light a fuse
and bring someone on, and your nine are off in
that person, of course, cortist that is his strength to
increase the tempo in this speed of the game. And
bear in mind too, man, he started the last few
debts for this all black team, arguably you know, in

(05:15):
the number one spot, so to bring him on, whether
it was early or even later. I mean, he probably
hurned that right, But of course it's always the timing
that's going to be in contention.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
So do you think I know you're sort of addressed before,
but do you think cam Roygard was taken off too
early yesterday?

Speaker 4 (05:33):
Yeah? I think so because if you look at his
I guess his involvements in the game. You know, nearly
everything he touched turned to gold. His ball clearance was
really good, his speed to ruckt excellent. He's ever present
when things are happening in and around the ball, and
of course I thought he got the better of the pond.
And I mean he is arguably the best that's been

(05:53):
running around for many years, so that contest also, you know,
he was actually starting to have a bit of dominance,
so to keep that flavor going for longer did certainly
stack up. But I did expect, to be honest, for
Cortius to come into the testment at some point in time.
But yeah, I think, like most of us, probably it

(06:14):
was a bit early.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
What did you make of his performance, Cortez once he
did get on, Yeah, it was.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
A bit messy, wasn't it. I Mean I always feel
for nine that come on and you set up off
the first line out set, you know, and you get
a really poor delivery. The distance from where he was
standing to the line out it's quite a large gap,
maybe three meters or so, and of course when the
balls delivered down at your feet, it's pretty hard to
grab that and shift it quickly to get at the
place of the game. And he knocked that one on,

(06:41):
didn't he And there was probably a bit of a
knock on effect from that, you know, just Y, you
just drop confidence and it's hard to turn that around.
Of course, of the timing one of the kick, the
clearance kick inside the twenty two, you know, that was
another big moment, wasn't it. I have to say, if
you're intrew the whole game, Pinty, and you clocked the
ponts time to clear the ball from the back of

(07:04):
the ruck and exit form and the one he got
courtiz On, the timing was all all over the place,
and that's a bit of a concern I think for me,
you know, as players trying to adjust to the speeding
up of the game.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Indeed, I guess we all thought when cam roy Gard
was out injured, you know, waiting for him to come back,
waiting for him to come back, we all just assumed
that he would come back into the starting halfback role.
Is there a case for Cortes Latima to start test
matches and for cam Rouyguard to come off the bench,
or would you like to see Roy Garden the nine
jersey more often than not?

Speaker 4 (07:36):
Look, I think it comes down to the way you
want to play and who you play. And I mean, nowadays,
I guess when you look at your nine position, at
such a pivotal role, the massive leaders of the game,
they drive your attack again, they ignite the tempo and
change the tempo of the game, and of course you
have to be up me multi skilled. Well, cam Roygard,

(07:58):
what a miraculous recovery he's made from that significant injury
and he's just right on top of his game. And
you know, I think they were always grooming him to
come back to start. But again, I don't think they
want to throw the baby out with the bath order
would courtiers of uttermoney because you've got Christi and Noah
Hope I'm sitting in behind the other four without a

(08:19):
shadow of a doubt. But maybe they do need to
decide now the big Test matches, it's marked them off
in the calendar every year. That's the man who starts
those games, and maybe some of the other test matches,
the lesser ones, when you start to groom and give
those other ones a chance to come off bench, you know,
So that probably would be my philosophy. I think he's

(08:40):
the best we have, so when you play the best teams,
start him and stay him there for as long as
to keep him there for as long as you need.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
Thanks and always appreciate your expertise and your analysis, really
appreciate it. That is an Strawn, former All Blacks half
back on the Sports Fix podcast.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Leading a vix. We've got just the ticket. It's sports Fix,
how my news talks.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
IV thirteen down one to go for the All Blacks
in twenty twenty four and with all due respect to
it's elite, the All Blacks will work on Sunday morning
in Turin to complete a ten win, four loss first
year for Razor. Not amazing, not terrible, nothing to get
too excited or two down about, especially in year one

(09:21):
of a four year World Cup cycle. Having stuck largely
to the same core side for tough back to back
to back Test matches against England Island in France this
Weekend's the chance to rest a bunch of players, give
some youngsters a game, and send off two veterans in style.
So let's start there. Sam Kin and TJ. Pettinada, fitness permitting,
will be in the twenty three as they bring the

(09:42):
curtain down on their respective All Blacks careers. It might
beat that both come off the bench, although Kin could
potentially start in the seven. Jersey Ardie Saville look, he
started twelve of the thirteen Test matches this year, so
maybe he gets a break for the last one. While
a Satitis had a superb year but also a big one.
He started the last seven tests, but I'm sure he'd

(10:02):
relish another game. So maybe you go Satiti at six,
Kine at seven, and bring Larkeye in at number eight.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
T J.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Pettin Nutter probably wears twenty one, with cam roy Guard
continuing his return from injury with another start one out
from their first five. Interesting one. The last six tests
have been McKenzie Barrett, McKenzie Barrett, McKenzie Barrett, so along
that trend you go back to McKenzie. I'd actually quite
like to see Stephen Petti Fatter get a crack there.

(10:32):
None of his six tests so far have been at
first five. He can play there obviously, and you can
have McKenzie or Barrett on the bench to change things
later if you need to. I think David Harvelli might
get a crack at second five with Jordy Barrett coming
off on Sunday with that knee injury, so they might
say you have the rest of the tour off and
David Harvilli starts at second five. I think Ruben Love

(10:54):
should play this one as well, maybe even start at fullback.
Will Jordan could go to the wing or he might
miss this one as well. And Ethan DeGroot must surely
have done his penance for whatever in discretion he committed,
so he'd have to have a game. Surely he hasn't
played since September the twenty eighth, give him another game

(11:14):
in the black jersey. All will be revealed on Friday morning.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
On the Sports Fix podcast. Let's pop inside the Chamber
are a few sporting issues to kick around. Monday's Chamber
is the People's Chamber with Elijah Field here as always.
Can we start with the All Blacks France game, Elijah,
we've given it the overnight test, we've given it sort
of thirty six hours to sort of, you know, to
ruminate about what your main takeaways. Was this an opportunity

(11:45):
lost for the All Blacks?

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Do you think?

Speaker 5 (11:48):
I think we ween talk about those final moments of
the contest. I think the big decision around whether Scott
Barrett should have gone for the corner instead of taking
the three points in the seventy fourth minute, I guess yes,
that's an opportunity lost there. I think there are a
couple of erarors on the attacking end that did allow
France to take advantage and that definitely up then get
the win. But I guess looking at the bigger picture,

(12:11):
I wasn't completely you know, discouraged by the performance. I
think the All Blacks team very well considering it was
just a one point loss, and I think I actually
think it was one of their better performances this season.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Yeah, there were some good performances and I want to
drill down individually in a moment, but you land on
a really interesting point because you know, right before the
Irish Test, sorry, the English Test, when it was England
Island France. I think most people would have said, you
know what, two out of three will be a good outcome.
We've got two out of three. It was almost though,
after the All Blacks had beaten England and Ireland that

(12:44):
we got a bit greedy and wanted all three. But
you're right, they played well to mighty. Williams stood out
for me. He was terrific in the front row. Not
sure how Ethan de Groot's going to get back in there,
although they don't say that, keen on picking them actually
who had a big game for you?

Speaker 5 (13:00):
For me, I was impressed by Cameroy Guard I think
going up against Antoine DuPont, who's once in a lifetime,
once in a generation type of talent, I think camera
actually outplayed him in that first half, I felt, and
I was quite surprised when he was taken off quite
early in that second half. For Ratima, I think another
player who stoid that was Peter Lackey, who was pretty
much thrown in the deep end when Summer Penny Female

(13:22):
took that head knock in the second minute. So I
think for Lacy to come in and put in the
hard yards for the entirety of the contest. I think
he plaid well as well.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
Yeah, indeed, I would totally agree with that. And you know,
for a guy who I guess wasn't expecting anything like
the minutes that he got, I thought he acquitted himself
very very well. So I hit to Italy. Now it's
a bit of a free hit. And maybe we're a
week early in having this conversation, but you know, how
do you rate the year? It's going to finish with
a ten to win four loss record, provided, of course,

(13:53):
the All Blacks can beat Italy on Sunday morning ten
and four.

Speaker 5 (13:57):
How do you feel about that? I think the results wise,
I'd be okay with that record of ten and four.
That that's how things play out. I think more so,
Scott Robinson has an idea of what his combinations are
for the coming years, and especially in that loose forward trio,
I think Wallace Atitzi and Peter Lucky throwing those two

(14:18):
in there together, they look like the future. You know,
when you're talking about life without Sam Caine, those who
have definitely filled a void. And in terms of developing
the game plan, I like that game plan they used
against France in terms of you know, they're trying to
play kick tennis at all. They know we're happy to
run the ball back and I get the French defenders tired.
So I think if they can continue developing that sort

(14:38):
of game plan, yeah, I think things are looking good
for the All Blacks of anything. So I'm definitely optimistic.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
All right.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
Well, there's lots of optimism now as well amongst Wallaby's
fans after a week ago they scored a try in
about the eighty fourth minute to beat England forty two
thirty seven at Twickenham yesterday or this morning rather, they
absolutely monstered Wales fifty two twenty. They've got Scotland and Ireland.
They could feasibly do a Grand Slam. This is a

(15:07):
far cry, isn't it from from the Wallaby side that
won just one out of six in the Rugby Championship.

Speaker 5 (15:14):
Yeah, for sure, and I think the England one definitely
gave them a lot of confidence. I guess beating Wales
in the way that they did, I think it's very
easy to look like world beaters, and when you're playing
against Wales like who've lost eleven straight I think under
Warren Gatland. So they've got their own issues to sort out.
But I think definitely a huge boost of confidence of

(15:34):
your Joe Schmidt's and the Australian side and Jesus if
they pull off a Grand Slam. I mean that could
be one of the big success stories in world rugby.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
Incredible. Yeah, and I think we all want Australia to
be good, don't we. We all want to have a
competitive Australian side that when I say we us here
in New Zealand seems to have been far too long
since there was real jeopardy around the blad Slow Cup. Anyway,
they'll have to wait till next year. Just before you
pop out of the chamber, Elijah, the All Whites play
Some More tonight Mount Smart. This result is a foregone conclusion.

(16:03):
The All Whites beat Vanha two on Friday Night eight
to one. Van Too earlier in the year beat some
Our four one. So you know, this could really get
quite ugly for the summer inside tonight. What are you?
What are you hoping to see though? From from the
All Whites with Chris Wood again leading the line?

Speaker 5 (16:21):
Yeah, I think would be a great opportunity for Auckland
fans in general to see Chris Wood. I wasn't sure
if Chris Wood was going to start or not, it
sounds as though he is. I think, you know, the
All Whites will continue to build confidence, particularly that they've
already moved on in the next stage of World Cup qualifying. Personally,
as a as a salmon myself, I'm hoping not for

(16:42):
an eight one thrashing at the hands of the All Whites.
So I'll just say I'll go four nil as a
prediction for the All Whites.

Speaker 3 (16:51):
Would you take but you surely you want some. I
want to score a goal, right, I think a goal
like would you take four nil or would you prefer
six to one?

Speaker 5 (17:02):
I'd say no, personally, four nil. I don't want to
leave any more goals there, No, No, I'm happy. I
think if we have opportunities or chances on the tech,
and you know we don't the All Whites don't concede
a goal, then I'd be happy with that. But I
don't want to concede eight or nine or ten goals.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
All right, seven thirty to night kick off on that
one at Mount Smart. Let's hope that Auckland football fans
do turn up to get a glimpse of of Chris
Wood and the others and the summer national team as well. Elijah,
always a pleasure chatting sport with you in the chamber.
Let's do it again next week. Thanks Pony Sports Effects,
