Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks ed B
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix. Howard By News Talk said.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Be hello there, and welcome into the Sports Fix podcast.
We never tire of bringing you your daily dose of
sporting stuff, including interviews, sports news, a bit of opinion,
a bit of chat as well. It is Friday, the
fifth of June on Jason Pine. My name is Darcy
Walter Grave, and we've got it all. Maybe one day
we could actually have a fight on the podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Where are your egging?
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Piney a UFC special? Perhaps we could square off in
the octagon. Thousands turned away after trying to buy tickets.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
I don't think it'd sound good. I think the audio
would be terrible. It'd be like, ow did it be
the end of it?
Speaker 3 (00:55):
So it would be the end of it that it
wouldn't take much for me to submit. Anyway, we're straying
slightly from the point here of the podcast. Head of
the weekend, I want to talk so for Rugby finals
with you, I want to talk the day that was
at Lord's over the first day with sixteen wickets. FA
Length A different voice on the podcast today. Who are
hearing from Jason.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
I'm gonna have chat with Mike McGarry, who nearly scored
a goal up against Things the nearly he didn't anyway,
He's going to join us to talk about what happened
in Haiti and what may happen against England on Sunday morning.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Looking forward to that and the latest in sports news too.
Let's get into it in other news. Let's get you
underway with a look at some of the big sports
stories around today. England page baller Ollie Robinson has catapulted
his side back into the first cricket Test against New
Zealand at Lord's. England rolled for one hundred and forty
batting first before a Robinson onslaught in the second over
(01:50):
of New Zealand's innings.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Oh now it's very close.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
He's played around that and giver inside edge.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Shortland gone to the over.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Close again, Shirley dude, Yeah, three and over. The black
Caps got through to sixty one for six at Stumps.
Manly have capped off a week in which Kevin karen
Foran was signed as their permanent coach with a twenty
eight fourteen home winning the NRAL over South Sydney captain
Jake Kroboivitch is relieved to get the result amid plenty
(02:24):
of foreign fanfare.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
But on the way Yea where I drove, it's had Fosball,
Foz Pintes, Kieran Flord Chicken. I'm like, jeez, we better
play good.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
So thank god, thank god we turned up and played
well because.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
It was a lot going on it and Poland's Maya
Flinska has stunned even herself after winning through to the
French Tennis Open women's final. The world number one hundred
and fourteen becomes the first qualifier in Roland Garros's history
to advance to the final.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
It's not like pretend it's someone you know expected it.
I mean I was outside two hundred and now. I
mean the finance of a grandsom so I feel like
it's a big thing, use and a Vinion.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
It's Sportsfix with Jason Vine and Dussy Water.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
We'll join now on the podcast by former All White
Mike McGarry as we look forward and back to the
All Whites so far at the World Cup. Well, the
prelims anyway.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Good a Mike, mate, how's it going?
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Oh? Very well, it's going to be an epic weekend
of sport and an epic a couple of months of sport.
And I suppose Sunday morning up against England, you're probably
getting tired of people ringing you up and go. You know,
you almost scored against England, but it wasn't to be.
Do you want to hang up on me now or what? Now?
Speaker 6 (03:42):
What I need is for a Spanish influencer to decide
that he wants to make a reel on the Mike
McGarry never nearly scored a goal against England, and I
can give up teaching and get those four million likes
and I can I can retire and just go on
to into Hibernation.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
It's been a wonderful side show, but we've got to
leave it there. The side show really focus on what's
going on on the football because I think a few
of them got punched in the nose up against Haiti.
When you watch that, what was your impression about what
happened where they have to lift and the decisions that
the coaching staff made about bringing the extra guys on
(04:18):
the formation they took. Just tell us what you saw.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
Well, I just saw a side that obviously, you know
they only spent I suppose they spent a week together.
But there was a team that gets put to it
together and would like all international teams, you get put
bat together. And then you got to play against the
side who played quite a number of games, and we're
well organized and defensively, I thought we were pretty naive
(04:43):
the other night, gave away some pretty soft goals. We
looked ok going forward, didn't create a hell of a lot,
but we still looked okay going forward and keep position.
After they scored their first goal, we were probably you know,
we may have been the better side for the next
twenty minutes, twenty five minutes, and then of course at
half time you make all those changes and you know,
again in the shape went to custod really didn't it
(05:04):
and conceded another three. So he's got a lot to
work on between now and even Sunday. I'm hoping he's
been working on because England will be a challenge.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
I was talking with Jason Pine, and Jason Pine come
up and said, well, the positive was there was no injuries.
Sure there's something more than that, Like they managed to
get a few corners and just didn't connect to anyone
there in the box. But there was that side of things.
I suppose as well.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Yeah there was.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
I mean, as I said, after that first initial go
after ten minutes, which was pretty soft really to be fear,
I thought we actually played played pretty well for the
next twenty twenty five minutes and created a few chances,
got a lot of corners. I think there's probably at
least ten corners that we that we got. So we
were on the attack, but we never seriously threatened the goal.
(05:52):
I didn't think and I don't you know, the hat goalkeeper.
I didn't think was that flesh to be far in
the first half, you know, so we should have been
putting a lot more pressure on him than we did. Say, yeah,
they'll be disappointed, but hey, it's still just the warm
up games and it's still the big show to come.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Well, that's it and they're warming up and the game
on Sunday morning against England a huge What do you
expect to change wise? Do you think that Darren Bazi
will run his starting team. He'll give them plenty of
time to get their their legs, their feet on the turf.
Is that the best way forward? Do you think?
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Well? I think he has to do for the first
half anyway, I think he's got to play probably a
shadow shadow side for what he's going to put out
against against Iran in that first match, who, by the way,
look pretty sharp. So yeah, I think he has to
do for the first forty five. Anyway, You've got to
account for injuries. You've got to account for guys coming
back from injury that aren't necessarily much fit at the stage,
(06:47):
So you expect a pretty strong side out in the
first half and then lots of changes again in the
second half.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
The likes of Joe Bell to maybe return, that would
really lift the side, wouldn't it. And I mean it's
not the only one coming back. We've had a couple
of guys on the sideline and Ryan Thomson's way back too.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, look, there's some creative players here to come back
in and Joe's obviously plays really well in that six
position and gives us a weave, but probably you'll probably
give them back for a little bit more cover than
they had the other night. But yeah, and of course
Ryan Thomas great a really good player, good attacking player.
So yeah, hopefully hopefully he can put us, as I say,
put a shadow side up for that first forty five,
(07:29):
give them some time together because it's always a it's
always a key aspect. And then obviously as the game
goes on and it will make a lot of changes
and get some gid everyone probably some game time as
England ball as sure. I'm sure as well.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
No, you wouldn't want a wholesale drop everybody at the
end of the first half and do not give them
a chance to actually mean a bit more combination. You're
seeing these changes will probably happen at the back end
of the second half.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
Yeah, they might. They might, I would say around the
sixty minute mark this time around. There was a lot
of changes at halftime in the first match. I'd expect
around the sixty minute mark with those you know that
his number one side goes out there for sixty I'm
sure happy with that, and then he'll he'll make the
changes at that point in time, I would say, and
bring other guys in just to make sure they all,
(08:14):
you know, as many as possible get a little bit
of game time. Anyway, heading into that first match, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
We'll So the first game not great. They kind of
got away those mess corner opportunities. The goal can see.
It's all done now in a warm up game, so
they've managed to drop all that, which would do as
well for the future, i'd like to think. But England
are enger than any good Mike.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
That's a that's a bloody loaded questions. Yeah. Yeah, of
course of course they are, and that will be really
interesting to see how how they how they line up,
whether or not they do put out the game shadow
side for the first maybe probably for them forty five minutes,
I imagine, because most of those guys have played fifty
sixty games this season anyway so and have played a
(08:59):
good number of internationals together as well, so the combinations
won't be quite so maybe quite so hard to put
together as our team. But yeah, I'd expect them to
put out a pretty strong side in the first half
and obviously see how things develop, and then lots of
changes i'd imagine in the second half.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
Sports txxcess The All Whites have a very important game
of football coming up on Sunday morning, New Zealand time
at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Not only
is it their final game before the World Cup proper
starts ten days after that against Iran, but they also
(09:36):
have their very significant matter of bouncing back from what
happened against Haiti on Wednesday. Haiti are ranked about the
same as New Zealand. The All Whites went into this
game with realistic optimism that they would be able to
win the match and give their World Cup preparations a
real boost. Instead, a four nil defeat had them rarely
(09:59):
licking their wounds and having to lift themselves up. A
big challenge for Darren Beasley and his coaching staff to
reset his team after the disap appointment of a four
nil loss in very disappointing fashion. England, of course, are
a much much, much better side than Haiti, so the
fear is that if Haiti can beat New Zealand four nil,
(10:21):
what on earth might England do to them. On the
happy side of that, it's unlikely that New Zealand will
play the same way or players badly again. I get
the feeling they'll lift their game against England, and in
terms of the strategy around team selection, I would imagine
there'll be a bit more pragmatism from Darren Baisley this
(10:42):
time around. On Wednesday, he gave twenty two of his
twenty six players a run. You were allowed to make
eleven substitutions during the game and he used every single
one of them. The problem with that was cohesion went
out the window once those changes started to be made.
The first half performance from the All Whites was actually
pretty good against Haiti, despite conceding a goal. They had
(11:05):
the better of possession and territory and could have scored one,
two or even three goals themselves. The first half performance
was okay. It all fell apart after the break. As
I say, when those changes came, Darren basically has to
decide his best eleven for the game against Iran and
injury permitting play that team for the first half, and
I reckon the first hour at least against England, let
(11:28):
them build that cohesiveness and let them have some time
together on the pitch against a quality opponent to really
prepare for the start of the World Cup.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Into the Chamber we go. Let's start with the cricket
last night where when I went to bed, Yeah we do,
really we do. Let's address it straight away. When I
went to bed, they just gone off for rain. That
was about I don't know. Made a bit at eleven
o'clock last night eleven thirty round about then anyone. I thought, okay, well,
I'll probably wake up in the morning and they would
have been on and off for rain and maybe, you know,
maybe England will be two hundred and six or something
(12:02):
like that. Instead I wake up and there's only been
fifty odd overs and yet England all out one forty
when we're sixty one for six.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
What happened? I did the same as you and went
to bed when the rain came down, and then, you know,
being elderly, I get up in the middle of the
nineteen you know, I have a WII and check the
scores and went what happened there? So we're running through them.
Jamison was on the verge of picking up that five
wicket bad. I said, okay, this is looking good. We
went back to sleep, got up at seven, checked the
(12:30):
score again and I did a U majaw hit the
deck went what were they playing on? A minefield?
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Obviously very good bowling performance, right, particularly given the fact
that Matt Henry only bowled four overs until he had
to go off with which feels like pretty worrying back
issues back spasm.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Let's hope he's okay.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
But Jamison, as you say, the five wicket back, Nathan
Smith and willow' rourke combining for the other five wickets,
they're all out one forty. Look, the ball's obviously doing
a bit in the conditions. But then Olie Robinson with
a triple wicket maiden and we're twelve for four with
probably our two best bats Williamson and Ravendra both back
in the huts for a duck.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
And we're never going to see that again. I mean,
we're not going to see came Williamson at Lord's again
after this Test. But those two guys the premieres rolled
for ducks. It's freak show stuff that the worm's got
to turn right, it's got to change.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
Well, Glen Phillips are still out there, thankfully he is.
He's got over half of our runs thirty one not out.
Nathan Smith is there on an unbeaten six. Not a
lot to come in terms of batting, Jamison, Henry O'Rourke.
Are we looking at another three day Test? Here?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Does well? Quite lightly? The English are good at doing that,
aren't they.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
They are evidence the ashes Sometimes they don't even get
to the third day.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
And what I like about we were talking yesterday, do
we run in with a metchell sant ned do we
got Glenn Phillips. Looks like they turned towards Glenn Phillips,
which is not bad. He's almost going at a run a ball,
so the situation doesn't concern him at all. Seaball hit
ball regardless how good indeed.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
So, I mean the first session will be very compelling
viewing tonight around about ten o'clock our time, when Smith
and Phillips go back out and try and eat into
this lead. They're still what eighty odd behind, aren't they?
So you'd want to get up over one hundred. I mean,
try to get to one forty at least even eke
out a lead. It seems a long way off when
you're six down for England. I guess they come out
and try and knock us over and get back in.
(14:22):
But I mean it's again, you know, ball dominating back
to such a huge degree. Is it that the bawling's
so good or are players just now kind of just
waving a bat at things, even if it's a red
ball not a white one.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, I think so LA's a fair in the attitude
towards what they're doing. Not really you'd think it anywhere
they would treat it with a bit more gravitas, would
be lords, you really would be exactly. I do wonder,
but look, the rain's going to dominate. Apparently it's going
to rain off and on right the way through the tests.
So it's kind of hard to judge where those teams
(14:55):
are at when they're dealing with constantly on, constantly off.
What the outfields do, what the pitcher's doing, The conditions
are moving, the jigs ball around, so hard to ascertain.
I'm just coming up with excuses. I can hear you're
doing it as you're doing it.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Yeah, but anyway, I'll see what happens on day two,
ten o'clock to night in New Zealand. Time quick look
at the Super Rugby Finals. Hurricanes, Brumbies tonight, Crusaders, Blues tomorrow, Chiefs,
Reds tomorrow night. Any upsets here or is it Hurricanes Crusaders, Chiefs?
And that means the Blues are the lucky loser whoill
also go through.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Yeah, they're going to get beaten by the Crusaders and
then they're probably going to play them again. That's the
nature of the draw. I don't see an upset. Look
the Brumby's got beaten by more one pussifaker last week
and there's no mean feat for them, but I'm sure
it spoke with Steve Larkham name drop, name drop this
week and I think they learn enough out of that
(15:47):
to suggest they might be a threat. And let's face it,
who's the bogey team of the Hurricanes and Super Rugby.
It's the Bubies. Yeah, yes, you never say never. And
look you can't write the Blues off against Kende. They've
been playing so badly it's got to turn eventually. And
then Chiefs Reds. Yeah, now it's going to be the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
Yeah, I think so. I think of all of the teams,
the Chiefs and the Crusaders are the form teams. I
mean we're only basing that off the Hurricanes rather meek
performance against the Crusaders down in christ Esh last weekend.
I think they'll be okay tonight. Terrible night in Wellington.
By the way, does I can report from the Capitol
it's been pouring down this afternoon, So whether that has
an impact ornight, I'm not too sure. Maybe on the crowd.
I'm not sure about the rugby. But yeah, it's odd,
(16:31):
isn't it. The Blues might lose a fourth straight game
tomorrow and then still be in the semis.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
I don't think they'll have that problem next year unless
more one Pacifiker miraculously survive. I think they might. It
might be slightly tidier with only ten teams, right.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
I think you might be right. I think you might
be right. Heeps to look forward to him over the weekend.
That is us in the chamber today.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
What about the race cast? Come on, come on mate,
it's Monica. It's the thousandth Grand Prix for McLaren. You're
not letting me talk about it just to Thanks for that, Jason.
