April the tenth, a head of an extremely busy sporting
weekends or whether permitting, of course, I'm Jason Pine.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
My name is Darcy Walter Graveler. We'll play through anything.
We're like Postman, right, rain, hail, sleep, shine, tornadoes or
maybe not.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
The mail must get through, the sport must get through. Yes, well,
we certainly keep our fingers crossed, and we ask you
to stay safe if you are in any way in
the eye of the storm or on the path of
the storm. Let's forget about that. This is not a
meteorological podcast. It's a sporting podcast. I want to run
my eye over with you, Dars the weekend's Super Rugby Action,
(01:00):
because there are a couple of games here that I'm
really interested to get your views on which way they
might go. The latest in sports news, and in terms
of a fresh voice, a different voice on the pod
who we're hearing from Jason, We're going to have a
yarn with Brody Kostecki.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
He's the championship leader of the Supercar Series. Of course,
there is a double header tope Wall this weekend next
week getting down to christ Church and they'll be driving
at Ruapoona. So we're talking motor sport on the show.
Bro looking forward to that. Let's get into it.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
In other news, Let's get you underway with a look
at some of the big sports stories around today. Defending
Masters champion Rory McElroy says he's feeling calmer and able
to adjunct better to the pressure now he's already worn
the famous green jacket. The Northern Irishman holds the joint
lead again after the opening round of this year's Masters
at Augusta, alongside American Sam Burns.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
We're playing the first measure of the year. It's the Masters.
You know, if I felt absolutely nothing on our first tea,
that's not a good sign. So it was nice to
feel my hand checking a little bit when the tea
went into the grind and struggled to put the ball
on top of the tee.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
The Cannovary Bulldogs of silenced concerns over their early season
NRL form.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
We've got the first big.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Boil over the year thirty two sixteen. They beat Penrith,
whose five match winning run has come to an end
and Chris Wood has safely returned to top level football. The
all White scuff that has played the first half of
Nottingham Forest's Europa League quarterfinal first leg away at Porto.
They're giving it forty five minutes.
Speaker 6 (02:32):
Chris Worth with an I on playing a role in
the remainder of the Premier League season where his goals
will be needed to keep them up.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfix with Jason Vine and
Darcy Walter Grave.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Welcome to the Sports Fix podcast. Now to a man
who's just climbed out of his car. His name is
Brady Castecki. He is the championship leader in the supercars
and he's performing at Topaul this weekend and Ruapoona next weekend.
He joins us. Now, hey Brady, how are you?
Speaker 5 (03:05):
Yeah? Good, Thank you thanks having me on the show.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yeah no, thanks very much for joining us. Looking forward
to what may be a very hectic wee king to
championship leader. And that's something that changes every half an hour,
isn't it. What are your expectations around what happens at
Topo over the weekend.
Speaker 6 (03:20):
Yeah, I think it's looking a little bit interesting obviously
with the cyclone coming. But yeah, we're always excited to
be here in New Zealand. Obviously being here with the
double head or two.
Speaker 5 (03:27):
Is always really exciting.
Speaker 6 (03:29):
But we've just finished up practice for the day and
the Shelvy PR number seventeen has been quite good out
the gates, so we're pretty happy about that, and I
we'll just focus on the next day or so and
see what happens comes up that.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
How challenging is it to get out of you've experienced
hopable for it's got really crazy grip that the traction
something else. It rips tires apart to tract in between
that and the wet racing difficult for you and your team.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 6 (03:58):
It's a very old surface in some parts, so it
you know, definitely chans up the tires a lot.
Speaker 5 (04:03):
But you know, we'll do our.
Speaker 6 (04:04):
Best to try and predict what will happen with the
balance of the car and and you know, I put
our best foot forwards, you know, going into Spius, So
qualifying is going to be important to make sure you
start up the front and stay out of trouble and
then go from there.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Where does this sit in your list of tracks to
race at? Is it a place you enjoyed? Does it
work well for the way you pedal?
Speaker 5 (04:23):
Brodie?
Speaker 6 (04:25):
I always enjoyed just coming into New Zealand as a whole.
You know, the fans here are really passionate. I feel
like the motorsport industry here in New Zealand's always really strong.
So yeah, I always, you know, enjoy coming over and
you know, racing here in general. But Topaul has always
been a pretty good track to me, So yeah, we'll
see if it's it still stays that way tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Really early doors in the championship seene before the lead's changed.
I mean there's a new leader every other week. You've
only been through what seven races a couple of rounds.
What do you put this down to this? The nature
of the swapping at the top.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Yeah, definitely, it's probably just a new format that we
have for the championship, and the championship being so close
at the moment, you know you have to be at
the top of your game to nurture run at the front,
and you know there's there's no cars that are really
dominant anymore, to be honest, it's just so close all
the way from you know, first all the way to
the of the grid.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
So you know, it's just so time these days.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
So you know, if you have one bad round, you
know you can slot down five or six places in.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
The championship at the moment. So we're just going to.
Speaker 6 (05:30):
Do ab our, you know, the best job that we
can do, execute each day and stay out of trouble.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
And the New Zealanders competing there understand what it's like
to play in the rain because they've grown up like that.
Just give them a distinct advantage to get their gun
boots on and run.
Speaker 6 (05:45):
Yeah, I'm sure they'd like to think so. But I
enjoy the rain just as much as I enjoy driving
the dry, So I'll give it a good crack, you
know when it comes.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
Time, you know when it's raining.
Speaker 6 (05:56):
But it definitely does raining a lot over here.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
It's probably rained more than it's been dry, you know.
You know for me and my I guess career so.
Speaker 6 (06:04):
Far in supercars, so it will see what happens tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
And did Johnson Racing planning You're not running the supers,
but there's five of them out there. How have they
been accepted or looked at by the Aussie race fans
because I'm sure in their eyebrows went back when they
saw Japanese car out there, but they being accepted into
the fold.
Speaker 6 (06:23):
To be honest, man, I don't really pay attention, to
be honest, I just pay attention to my job, and
that's driving my car, which.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Is a Ford Mustag.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
We know that is.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
And one last thing, and Brady, thanks very much for
joining us. It's a double heady you back down to
christ Jitch. What do you know about a little perna
that you're focusing on what you've got now? But it's
a different track, it's a different place. What do you
know about it? How do you prepare for it?
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Yeah? Real Puna is a very different track. It's quite
small and tight.
Speaker 6 (06:50):
It's probably gonna make for a bit of chaos in
the racing. But I'm just focused on the job I
had this weekend at Topor and you know, we'll take
it one day at a time.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Brilliant Okay, looking forward to seeing you in accidentally, So
the weather behaves itself, Brady Kostiki Series leader, We hope
that carries on well onto this weekend and next weekend
as well. Thanks for your time, bro.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
All right, thank you sort of sex well.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
I normally start thinking about the A League weekend at
about this time on a Friday, So no point breaking
with tradition because there are two big games involving our
two A League men's teams over the next couple of days.
Let's start tomorrow Saturday at go Media Stadium where Auckland
f C welcome Melbourne Victory. The shape of the table
currently has Auckland f C just three points behind Newcastle
(07:36):
at the top, both teams with three games to play.
Auckland f C play Melbourne Victory first. Newcastle play immediately
afterwards up against Adelaide United, who are currently in third place.
So the maths would tell you that if Auckland f
C were to beat Melbourne Victory and then Newcastle were
to lose to Adelaide, Auckland f C would move level
(07:58):
on points with the Jets and they would have a
better goal difference. In other words, with two games to go,
Auckland f C would be top of the table and
their chances of retaining the Premier's plate that they won
in their very first season would be well and truly
in their own hands. I know there are a lot
of ifts and butts, and amongst all of that, and
(08:21):
add into it a couple of unavailable players Francis Devrees
and Guzumo May in fact the two players who have
played more often for Auckland FC than anybody else in
their short life. But it is there for Auckland FC
to take and take control of their destiny. Speaking of which,
Wellington Phoenix, with three wins in their last three matches,
(08:42):
have snatched the wooden spoon basically or snatched away any
chance of finishing in the wooden spoon position by climbing
the table, and now, by contrast, have their top six
destiny in their own hands. If they were to beat
Melbourne City on Sunday and then beat Western Sydney next
weekend and then beat MacArthur in their final game two
(09:05):
weeks from now, they would also be in the top six. Again,
there are some big ifs in there. But if we
rewind a month when Auckland f C hammered at Wellington
Phoenix five nil and Jihn Colo Ataliano profit his resignation
straight afterwards, any thoughts of a top six finish were
so far out of reach as to be fanciful. And
(09:27):
yet here we are Auckland f C chasing the Premier's plate,
Wellington Phoenix chasing a place in the six. What a
weekend for football fans. Let's see how it all pans out.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
The Chamber is now in session on Sports Fix.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Into the chamber, we go across the threshold, we travel,
we take our seats, we talk sport and hear you
and i'd ask can we talk Super Rugby Threehold?
Speaker 3 (09:51):
What are we getting married or something?
Speaker 2 (09:53):
No, it's rather grand as it really is. All it
is really is a sort of a gap in the
wall that we sort of squeeze our way through to
get in here. But yeah, be that as it may.
I can't possibly be objective about Hurrican Blues, you can.
I've checked the odds stars. This seems incredible to me.
(10:13):
The Blues, who are equal top on points with the Hurricanes,
all be yet having played one more game, are paying
three dollars forty to win this game the Hurricanes one thirty.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Okay, that is odd and I'm thinking of leaving the
chamber now and putting what little money I've got left
after rent and eating are on that. That's good money.
The big thing about this Hurricanes Blues game, this is
my you know, I'm a massive Crusaders fans, but really
I I'm only going to watch one Super Rugby game
this weekend. It's Hurricanes Blues. This has got so much promise.
I e. Are the Hurricanes all that or have they
(10:46):
just benefiting from a great drawer. It's the same with
the Blues. Have they got what it takes? Is so
much on this game. And I feel for the radio
commentators because all the Blues have you know, with so
follow the Backs have all dyed their hair blonde, and
the pack are all shaving their head. It's going to
be really hard to identify these guys.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Right, absolutely right. I'm glad I haven't been given that
role because I'm otherwise engaged, because being in Wellington I
would have, but I've been saved by an alternative commitment.
But yeah, you're right, it's going to be hard to
tell them apart well bleached blonde hair and shaved heads
or not. I think man for man and season to season,
(11:26):
the Hurricanes deserve to be favorite. But like I said,
I didn't expect it to be that, you know, to
be that convincing in the eyes of the tab and
obviously the weight of money that's coming in the battle
at ten is so interesting. Interesting to me to ask
the old dog Bowden Barrett up against the new young
pup Reuben Love having a impact you think this battle
within a battle might have, Well.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
I think huge, And it has to be the pivot.
They run the show, don't they. Isn't that the whole
idea If they didn't have a handle on what's going on,
or they get run through and run over, I can't
put their kicks in the right pose trouble, which is
why you lean toward Wellington understanding there at home and
I don't know how much weather they're going to deal with.
Might just be the tail end of it. The ability
(12:09):
to find the corners, find the touch, and we know
that Bowden's played there before, but it maybe puts them
in a bit of an advantage. Possibly.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
It's such an interesting little, as I say, layer to
this whole thing. Look, I think the Hurricanes have the
attacking potency out wide, fing Ou north Fall with nine
tries already. Josh Moreby is out there as well. You've
got Jordi Barrett and Billy Proctor in midfield, with Ruben
Love running the cutter. It's such an exciting team and
I don't want to get too carried away because I've
(12:39):
supported the Hurricanes for thirty years and we've got just
one Super Rugby title and that was ten years ago.
But it's hard not to be excited about what might
lie head over this really important little bracket of matches,
including a game up against your Crusaders who are in
Brisbane to take on the Reds. You should be okay there,
you'd think so.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
But every time you think you're going to be okay,
it's an absolute foot trop and it's not under It's
not overstate the ability of the Crusader because they've hardly
set the world on fire. Look, they've been dolinant when
they've played teams that may be right up to them,
but they've also looked frail in some positions and you
(13:19):
think that Queenslane under the new Wallabies coach, maybe they'll
see Okay, I'm just trying to make it sound like
it's a competition. We're going to smash them.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
I just listening to you talk and say thinking to myself,
who was he trying to pull the wool over the
eyes of me?
Speaker 3 (13:35):
I was trying to convince myself, so I got really
excited about it. But yeah, it should be one way traffic,
all right.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Stay on that positive track then, because later on Tomorrow
night it's the Storm against the Warriors in Melbourne. This
always fills Warriors fans with a sense of impending doom.
I don't know when the last time the Warriors beat
the Melbourne Storm in Melbourne was, or at all was,
but I know that it was a long time ago.
What chance that streak, that drought, that that run of
(14:02):
no results in their favor is broken tomorrow night?
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Seventeen games they haven't seen that says it all, doesn't
But and there's always a butt in situations like this.
The Warriors have had more than a skid. The last
couple of weeks have been rotten. And I don't have
to explain to anyone that we've seen that. We've got
a Melbourne team who are hell bent on revenge after
(14:28):
getting rolled by a dominant Penrith team last week and
that was an outrageous game. What happened to the Penrith
team and they took on the Bulldogs Thursday night, they
got beaten And I'm trying to work out what went
on there. So this is the NRL five percent off
you might get under the hammer. And I think as
(14:50):
the recording of this, we're still unsure about the centers
because Adam pomp is not going to be there, not
one hundred percent sure yet around Nickel Klukstar whether he's
going to be floating around too, So there will be
some adjustments made. Not sure. But if you're a betting man,
you wouldn't be putting any money on the Warriors. I'm
(15:11):
just being honest. But you know, the NRL, you.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Never know, Yeah, you know, you do. You never know.
And that's what is going to get me in front
of that television tomorrow night, because you just never ever know.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
We don't to remove yourself from the TVD. You can
just plot me and sit there and watch the Blues
and the Hurricanes and then go straight onto the storm
and that what what a night? What a night?
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Certainly the planned us, certainly the plan that's us in
the chamber today.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
