Speaker 2 (00:19):
Howard by News Talk said.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Be hello there, and welcome into the Sports Fix podcast.
At the back end of the Monday to Friday week
the start of another huge sporting weekend.

Speaker 4 (00:29):
It is Friday, April seventeen.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
The last time I checked, and the last time I checked,
I'm Jason Pine.

Speaker 5 (00:35):
And did you know, Jason, today is the very last Friday,
the seventeenth of April twenty twenty six. There will not
be another Friday the seventeenth of April twenty twenty six.
So make the most of it because it's never happening again.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
We're going to make the most of the next fifteen
to twenty minutes. Then on Sports Fix, I want to
chat Super Rugby and NRL with you. I've got some
thoughts too on how christ Church is finally starting to
feel normal again in a sporting sense.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
Who were hearing from in terms of a different voice
on Sports Fix today, Well seven's slash Ferns.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
I finally managed to get hold of the ghost runner,
as I like to call, although I don't see they're
getting any tracks. The name is Braxton Sorenson McGee. She'll
be joining us on the Fix to talk about Seven's fifteens,
the new signing.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
The works.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Looking forward to hearing from Braxton, Sarrens and McGee. Latest
and Force news coming too, so let's get into it.
In other news, let's get underway with a look at
some of the big sports stories around today. The Your
Whites World Cup football hopes have suffered a blow, potentially.
Chris Wood has gone off with the right knee injury
after a high challenge from a Porto player in the

(01:44):
fifth minute of the Europa League quarter final, Second League
against Nottingham Forest. Reckless challenge, dangerous challenge, really naughty. I
think he's going to send it.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
Torto downcher Chat thankfully.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
Earlier reports are that the injury is not too serious,
a contrast with past experience for golfer Ryan Fox after
crting a six hundred past sixty five to open the
latest PGA two events in South Carolina.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
The last time I was.

Speaker 6 (02:12):
Here I had pneumonia in twenty twenty three, so I
don't have great memories of the plates, and I've certainly
changed them a lot this week and really enjoying the week,
the place in Hilton, the head got the family hair,
got my in law's hair, and the kids are having
a great time and it makes it easier to play
well on the golf course.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
And Black Cap captain Tom Latham not putting any pressure
on his newbies to perform in today's opening One Day
International against Bangladesh and Ducker. It's the first of six
white ball encounters over the next sixteen days. New Zealand
are missing more than twenty top tier players for various reasons.

Speaker 7 (02:42):
All we asked for is them to come in and
bring their own skill set that they've been picked for.
We obviously have a blueprint and a style that we
like to play with, but obfu we want guys to
come in and play the way that they've played for
their domestic sides back home in New Zealand.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sportsfix with Jason Vine and
Dusty Waldgrave.

Speaker 5 (03:03):
And it's a warm welcome now to the Sports Fix
podcast to Braxton Sorenson McGhee, one of the superstars of
New Zealand at women's rugby.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
She joins us now get a Braxton Hi. Here you going.

Speaker 5 (03:16):
I've really been looking forward to talking to you for
such a long time, so I'm pleased I've managed to
get hold of you on the start of a wonderful
tournament Hong Kong's Sevens.

Speaker 8 (03:26):
Excited much, Yeah, I'm very excited. Did it really get
to finish Vancouver how I wanted? But yeah, grateful to
be here.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
Tell us abo past breaks and when you were growing
up and started playing. You come from a sevens background
of fifteen's the other way round? What led you into
this sport?

Speaker 8 (03:44):
I actually came from a rugby league background. Grew up
with Yeah, my brother playing league, my mom managing his team.
So just yeah, I grew up with the rugby league.
My family is actually a rugby league family. Yeah, we
have a pretty pretty big league background.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
Well, I think anyone who knows the name Sorenson understands
there's a big league background.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
There must have been a lot of pressure on you.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
To to stay within that sport, was there or not?

Speaker 8 (04:13):
Not? Really? I feel like my yeah generation that I
was brought up with my mum dittle while to just
let me pick whatever I wanted to pick.

Speaker 5 (04:24):
Any other sports that tackled your fancy that you thought
you might have a look because plaining you're very athletic player,
and there be a number of other sports and probably
screaming for you anything else you looked at at.

Speaker 8 (04:36):
All or I not really looked at. But I loved
playing like all the other sports growing up in school.
So but my main one through your league sevens and rugby.

Speaker 5 (04:48):
And what was the kicker in the end? What decided?
When did you go only still only very young, but
when did you have that light bulb moment go, you
know what? I could make a career out of this.
I'll bet a stick to this. Was there a particular
time or game or moment where suddenly you had that
light bulb when you realized, yeah.

Speaker 8 (05:05):
I was my season with the with the Auckland Storm,
my first ever rapped team pretty much still in school.
Yeah either yeah, I think I was year twelve. But
just playing with the lights of like it or he demand,
Sylvia Brandt and just a bunch of those girls, Yeah,
made me realize that I really loved the rugby and

(05:26):
just the support that they showed me during my season
was yeah, pretty cool.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
I talked to a number of the Ferns and they
all talk about and I think Mike Avan Kalani Rus
talks about joy and that's what drives here and a
number of other players.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
They do it for the love of the.

Speaker 5 (05:40):
Sport and you can see that within the team the
way they play. So you fall into that category as well. Brexton, Yeah,
i'd say that what makes.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
You the happiest when you're out there in the middle
of the park.

Speaker 8 (05:53):
Just the people that I wish, I'd say, the connections
that I build with the girls, Yeah, pretty much. Just yeah,
just the girls, I would say, and just the in
the moment, just a feeling that I get it.

Speaker 5 (06:07):
Said, play on fire apartment. Obviously playing for the Blues
as well, you've created quite a splash of what you've
achieved in the last couple of years, and you'd get
more attention not only from the media but from the
public as well. How do you process through that, dealing
with the fact that now Braxt and Sorens and McGee
is a bit of a name around Rugby, not only

(06:28):
here but globally as well. How do you manage that.

Speaker 8 (06:33):
I don't really like Yeah, I would say that I
don't really pay you attend to it. I kind of
just focused more on my game and just yeah, just
whatever I need to do, then I just do that.
But yeah, I feel like it's pretty cool to be
hopefully an inspiration for the younger generation.

Speaker 5 (06:51):
You've got a good support network around you, Braxcellent help
you out with that. You seek advice from some of
other players, because it's a pretty big, scary world once
suddenly you go international and everybody knows your name and
your face and what you can do.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Right.

Speaker 8 (07:04):
Yeah, I feel like I do have a good support system.
Just yeah, my family and then just a bunch of
the girls that are in the sevenths and in the
fifteenthes that I lean on a lot.

Speaker 5 (07:16):
You're still only nineteen years of age, You've got a
professional career. But outside of that, looking to the future,
what else do you engage in? What other hobbies, what
other studies do you have? Because I'm presuming you're looking well.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Forward, are you not?

Speaker 5 (07:30):
Or maybe you're not, Maybe you just want to play code.

Speaker 8 (07:33):
Yeah, I think at the moment, I'm pretty focused on
rugby because I have a lot of years left, but
looking to hopefully, you know, get my degree eventually, and
I'd say teaching, just teaching the younger generation, and then
my hobbies don't really get much time, but when I do,
just spending time with family.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Nice said, what about your own game itself?

Speaker 5 (07:57):
Look, you've got a lot of very well, they are
gobs making attributes the way you play the game, but
always trying to improve. Where do you think there's the
biggest space that you can improve in in your career, Braxton?

Speaker 8 (08:12):
I think at the moment it's just my sevens career,
you know, I'm just starting out, so just improving and
just learning as much as they can on the gird.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
And in any aspect of that though, like a defense,
the way you run your kicking game, you're reading of
the game, anything there that you think maybe needs a
bit more work than the rest.

Speaker 8 (08:35):
No, not really, I just might improve them more the
same sports fair effects.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
I'm lucky enough to be in christ Church for the
weekend and flying into the Garden City today it felt
like a city that was whole again, certainly in a
sporting sense. There is so much going on in this
city this weekend and of course next weekend.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
Get to that. In the moment on the plane this morning,
so many supercars fans, unbelievable number of very very excited
motorsport fans, heading down to christ Church to get to
Ryal Poona for Supercar's debut on that track. Said to
be a wonderful weekend and of course the bonus race
today Topaul's lost last weekend christ Church is gain today

(09:17):
on Sunday the Wellington Saints and the Canterbury Rams will
christen Patakyorta. This is the new indoor sports center in
christ Church. Lucky enough to have a look through it
last year when it was in its closing stages. Talking
to a couple of people today it is absolutely world class,
not just as a community sports facility, but an elite

(09:38):
sports facility as well. Looking forward to seeing the Canterbury
Rams and the Wellington Saints doing battle there on Sunday. Addington,
dear old Addington Apollo Projects Stadium. I think we finally
say goodbye to it in an elite sporting sense tomorrow
when Wellington Phoenix play the Western Sydney Wanderers there. I'm
not sure what happens after that. I'm not sure anybody

(09:59):
is crystal clear on what the fate of Apollo Projects
Stadium is or even that piece of land Athletic Park
when it was finally used for the last time, was
turned into a retirement village. Not sure what the plan
is for Addington, but I guess we'll find out. And
then towering above the CBD here in christ Church, the
brand new one New Zealand Stadium at Tekaha just a

(10:23):
week away from opening, in fact a week tonight. The
stands will be absolutely packed for the Crusaders against the
waror task to start Super around twenty twenty six and
to christen this brand new facility. Christ Church people have
had to go through a heck of a lot in
the last decade and a half. It's great to see

(10:43):
them finally getting their rewards in a sporting sense.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Anyway, The Chamber is.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
End of the Chamber we go. Let's do this chronologically
in terms of our Saturday evening dark because we've got
the Warriors against the Titans at five, followed by the
Super Rugby top of the table class between the Chiefs
and the Hurricanes at seven. Let's start with the Warriors,
magnificent last week against the Storm. They're up against the Titans.
I know you don't like the phrase banana skin because

(11:15):
those are things that you.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
See on the ground in it. Yes, so I don't
know what. You call this an unexpected obstacle, perhaps could
the Titans be an unexpected obstacle for the Warriors tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (11:28):
We know that the Storm have been a bogie that
we just could not dislodge and I don't know how long,
and they eventually managed to pick it. I'd suggest that
the Titans are a bit of a bogey team as well.
We've managed some cataclysmic collapses in front of them, some
falls from graces like you wouldn't read about. So it's
a bogey that needs to be picked, but a different

(11:49):
kind of bogy. But you'd expect after what happened yesterday,
if they can or last week, if they can defend
with even seventy percent of the intensity they defended with
the most of the game against Melbourne wober Tide, the
Titans in serious trouble.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
Right, Absolutely they are now.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
I feel as though I don't know, but I don't
want to protict too much when it comes to the NRL,
because I thought that they would be too good for
the Tigers and for the Sharks as well, and they
lost both of those games. And I actually thought they
might struggle against the Storm and they won that. So
all you can do though, is say to yourself that
Andrew Webster has this team in a pretty good place.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
And I don't know so.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
I feel as though last week, if we look back
at the end of the season, the win over the Storm,
as you say, for the first time in ages, could
be one of those seminal moments throughout the season that
may may in some ways define the season.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
Or am I taking it too far?

Speaker 6 (12:39):
Nah?

Speaker 5 (12:39):
And he's taking as far as you want to. I
love to think about sport or all entitled to our
opinions because of all you enjoy it. And you're not
the only one who got bit on the backside by
saying the Storm are going to roll us again.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
I mean everybody did. No one saw that coming. I
don't even know.

Speaker 5 (12:51):
If the players saw that coming. But if you look
at Roger ti Vasishek and what he did to is well,
it won't be teammates he's going, but to Will Warbrick
at the end of that game. That's what we want
to see. That's what you want to see. That is intent.
There is raw physical attend and that is no not
on my watch. And he was making that ciga with
his hand. Need it naughty? And I think that says

(13:14):
so much about the thought process of the team.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
Absolutely, it does, all right.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
So following that, once we came down from that, we
only get a few minutes respite actually because at seven
o'clock down the road in Hamilton, it is another top
of the table super rugby clash. We had one of
these last week when the Blues went to Wellington. They
were top of the table then, but the Hurricanes dealt
with that particular stat and dropped them down to third.
The Chiefs won, so they're up to second Hurricanes Chiefs

(13:41):
in Hamilton? Who is favorite for this game.

Speaker 5 (13:45):
I don't like to say this because I don't want
to be bitten either, but after the way the Hurricanes
have developed, and they're like, okay, they're a real title threat,
and he was like, yeah, no, but wait till they
start getting to their run, and wait till they start
playing New Zealand teams and then we'll see what the
cut of their jib is. And they did that last week,
and I'll tell you what, that's a fine jib they've
got going on there, and I'd suggest they they will

(14:09):
be too much for the Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (14:10):
But the Chief's tough buncher they're really hard, so this is.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Gonna be magnificent.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
I look at the chief side, you know, Dars, and
I think, okay, will you talk about hard men? Summer
Penny Female, Luke Jacobson and Simon Parker. That's the loose
trio for the Chiefs. I'm not sure you find a
harder trio of men than that.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
No, And I really like what Luke brings to the party,
and that's a toughness mentally Physically, he's what do you
like tackling him? It's just a pile of bones and sinew.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
To be horrible.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
But it's that attitude within the top few inches that
is particularly hard, and that's what I'm excited about with him.
Poor guy boughtline all black for how long? Gets injured,
can't keep my peny, can't get back in again. But
he has got so much to offer. But you've got
to say the Hurricanes, don't you, even though the Chiefs
are at home, what you've seen with these guys, and

(15:06):
I've just cursed the Hurricanes.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
And I thank you greatly for that, for your curse
of my Hurricanes. I look at the back line, Royguard Love,
Barrett Proctor, morbyfin the young and northfol hearken and I
think that's probably the better back line. They shade it.
But Clark Laidlaw was asked about this during the week
in his media conference. You know, with your amazing backs,
is that where the game could be won or lost?
It was an unequivocal no. I don't think so. It

(15:31):
all starts up front. Whether he was cliching or not.
It's meant to be a bit wet in Hamilton tomorrow night,
So maybe this game is won by the men in
the smaller number of jerseys, the likes of a Warner
Derns and a Saffo Moor and a Passilio Tossi for
the Hurricanes. On the other side, Summer Sauny Tokiaho Josh
Lloyd Nay.

Speaker 4 (15:51):
This isn't all blacks, trial and all but name.

Speaker 5 (15:55):
I don't think you're worry about rolling out cliches. The
cliches for a reason because they're genuinely right. That's how
they become cliches. The game is one up front. That's
where that's where it won. That fancy pans a score
out wide, and if you haven't got the monsters up
the front doing their job, there's no point you can't
do anything right.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
No, you're so right, you're all right having of course
you and I played regularly the forbsolutely yeah.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
No, I was a loose head prop with a bit.
The closest I got to that was when I can
cast myself a few years ago. Uh, Doctor Scott Cutter,
who was looking after my concussion protocolichaid, ah, this is
a front rollers injury. You've done, what props to I'm like, yeah,
So that's the closest I'm getting.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
To being a prop. All right, Well, let's see if
it all starts up front tomorrow night in Hamilton Chiefs,
Hurricanes and other New Zealand Derby tonight, of course, as
the Blues welcome the Highlanders to Eden Park for the
Gordon Hunter Memorial Trophy.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
The Crusaders your Crusaders late tomorrow night out west in
Perth to take on the force. So much bought to
look forward to. But we've run out of room and
run out of time in the chamber.

Speaker 4 (16:59):
That's us over and out.

Speaker 1 (17:01):

Speaker 5 (17:25):
It was like a shampoo add from back in the day.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
Or yeah, well no good for either of us. No,
and on that rather cheerful note.
