Speaker 3 (00:20):
Hello there, welcome to the back end of the Monday
to Friday working week. Welcome to a fresh episode of
the Sports Fix podcast, brought to you an association with G. J.
Gardner Holmes, New Zealand Post Trust at home Builder. It
is Friday, the twenty seventh of March. I'm Jason Fine.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
And greetings to you all monuments Darcy want to go
break you back in studio again with your piny all
bit excited about any of the foota tonight and of
course on Monday too.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Looking forward to it very much. Here, don't get off
in the chance to see you are whites at home
twice in four days yet say.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
You're not working either, are you? Well? You're going along
as a fan right, well, it works.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
An interesting, interesting phrase. I'm going to enjoy watching the games.
I'm not certainly not going to be calling them, which
is which is a bit unusual. But I'm sure there
will still be a good experience. You're looking forward to that.
We spoke about it yesterday about the all Whites, but
also of course across town tonight ran about the same time.
But now lad the Warriors play, So are we are we?
You know, are we expecting four from four of them?
Give me your answer now maybe we can wait to
(01:20):
the chamber.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
What a grand idea, Pony.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
In terms of a different voice on the pod, who
are we hearing from today.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
Pony, We're gonna have a chat with Mosu. Tony Motu
played for the New Zealand Warriors for a couple of years.
He also played over at Wakefield at Trinity and of
course he was a New Zealand International League so we'll
talk to him about Roger to A Varsa Sheck and
his move from the Warriors to Wakefield Trinity, Ladys and sports.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
He is coming up too, so let's get into it.
In other news, let's get you underway as all ways
with a look at some of the big sports stories
around today. Roger Tooy Varsa Sheck is leaving the Warriors
after this season.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
That's an I just signed a two year deal with
the Wakefield Trinity and the Simple League.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
That's the man himself announcing the news on his brother's podcast.
Dame Lydia Coe has parted the lowest round of her
fourteen season professional golf career. She shot at twelve hunderd
past sixty on the opening day of the latest LPGA
event in Arizona, twelve birdies, seventeen out of eighteen greens
in regulation and just twenty five parts.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
I actually put in a new putter this week and
like I've had my old putter for a really long time,
like the same model. Maybe it's a honeymoon fairs, who knows.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
And Dan Carter has felt the pressure at the opening
of christ Church's new stadium, the All Blacks Great has
taken the first kick at goal.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
Because we go back a long way. I actually had
to come here early this morning just to have a
couple of practice ones to make sure I can still
kick and I'm not going to injure myself for to
embarrass myself.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Use and Avinion It's Sportsfix with Jason Hine and Dussy
Walter Grave.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Joined now in the Sports Fix podcast by Mottu Toni,
former Warrior, former Kiwi and former player at Wakefield Trinity,
which of course is where Roger to a Vasa Scheck
is off to for a couple of years. Next year,
I'm motto, welcome on And what stands out for you
about the career of Roger to a Varsa.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
Shek Yeah, I think you know, we'll always remember, you know,
Roger for the fancy footwork and you know some of
those wonderful tries that he scored himself and set up.
But for me, as you know, someone I guess retired
from the game, it's just the way he carried himself
and the way he represented the game. You know, he
was someone that I guess parents wanted their child to
(03:40):
play like but also be like Osterfield. So you know
that's the I guess the legacy that Roger's left for
rugby league officionados like himself.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Off to Wakefield Trinity. He's off to play in England
and the Super League over there. You've had experience with Hole.
You know what super League's all about. What does that
do for him? Is it a great way to retire?
Is it about the cash? Will we have a measurable
effect on the competition.
Speaker 5 (04:07):
I think it'll be a bit of everything, does he
So there's a couple of well, there's a few Kiwi boys, myself,
Ali Lo Titi vint Mellas who finished that Wakefield, so
we've got a connection to the club. But the wonderful
thing about the Super League is that you know the fans,
but also that the family time that comes by being
(04:30):
based in the UK. So Wakefield is just outside Leagus
and when I say just outside, it's literally the next
sort of place over from from Wakefield and one hour
on the plane and you're in Paris, you know, with
the family. So you know, that's I guess some of
the would have been some of the intentive. You know,
some of that family time, do some traveling while still playing,
(04:53):
you know, some quality of rugby league.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
At the same time, say quality of rugby league. That's
what they've paid him for. Who knows what they're paying
and it won't be small bucks. But considering is his
age he's still relatively young, is fitness and what he's
done over the last couple of years, he's going to
have quite the effect on the Super League, isn't he?
Over that two year contract.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
He's going to have a massive effect. And you know,
let'sen not forget Roger's been a multiple Player of the
Year award went off for the Warriors. You know, even
recently as last year. But I think Wakefield have been
very astute with you know, the signing of Roger because
obviously you get what you get on the field, but
he's going to be such a massive positive influence for
(05:38):
the players, you know, the staff, but also the club
in general. So I know the Wakefield Trinity fans will
be really excited about Roger going over.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
You've been there. A number of New Zealand players have gone,
maybe to carry on their careers, some finish them off,
some of them carry on. What's the attraction from English
clubs for New Zealand players? Why do they pick them up?
What do they bring? Is it something distinctly different in
their style, their manner, what they offer.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
Yeah, the Kiwi Boys you know, typically viewed as people
to help build culture at clubs. They also feel that
the Kiwi boys assimilate a lot easier to the English lifestyle.
And the other thing that the you know, the English
game I love about the Kiwis is that when they're
in the club, they helped build that family, like you know,
(06:28):
atmosphere within the club. So you know, that's the I
guess the attractiveness of getting inequality human beings and players
like Roger.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
And when you look back at Roger and what he's
done in rugby league, plainly it's been huge. He also
had a weed delly deli over in the rugby union
so much so he ended up being an All Black.
So it says a lot about the way he can
transfer as skills.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
Yeah, definitely. You know for a boy that went to
a local Southwalkland school o Tahou College, you know, to
play for the Kiwis, you know, play for the All
Blacks represents more. And even when you know Premiership with
the Roosters and hopefully the Warriors, you know, he's had
a wonderful career. And I know that the next generation
(07:13):
of professional players in the NRL will be sort of
talking about Roger and how I guess his style of
play but also his mentorship an example helped them become
better in RL players.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
Mentioned at the start is a key thing around this.
He is the definition of a professional athlete, not a
rugby league player or a rugby player, but a professional athlete.
There's a template that's what you want in your team,
regardless of what you play.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
One dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sports Fix with Jason
Vine and Darcy Waldgrave.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
The All Whites take a couple of fairly important steps
along the road to the World Cup in North America
in June across the next four days or so. Tonight
at Eden Park, the eighty fifth ranked or Whites take
on world number seventy five Finland, and then at the
same venue on Monday evening it is world n fifty
five Chile, who are their opponents in this FIFA series.
(08:13):
What do we want to see from the All Whites
over these two matches that will give us confidence that
things are on track for a best ever World Cup
later in the year. The obvious thing, of course is results.
This is a results game, and once they get to
the World Cup it'll be about getting wins or points
in any fashion that they can. But there's also the
(08:36):
performance that we are keen to see, and the All
Whites have built up a way of playing in recent
times which has been a lot more eye catching than
the trailblazing nineteen eighty two and twenty ten sides, and
that's largely because there are so many more players now
in the All Whites environment who are playing at a
good club level around the world and are now not
(08:57):
just happy to be on the same pitch as some
of these higher ranked opponents. Once they're on there, they
want to win football matches. They are professionals. That is
their job at club level and they bring that mentality
into the national side. A couple of really interesting selection
dilemmas for coach Darren Baisley in these matches, in particular
in goal Max Crokham of Millwall and Alex Paulson of Bournemouth.
(09:21):
But at the moment on loan in Poland at Lekki
A Gadansk are really in a head to head battle
for the number one goalkeeping spot. The way Darren Baisley
plays these two games will be fascinating to watch. I
get the feeling it'll be a game each for those
two and then Darren Baisley is going to have to
decide who his number one number one is for that
(09:43):
first game against Iran at the World Cup. There's also
the chants for players to earn themselves a spot on
the plane. Football is all about timing and Locke Bayless,
a young Newcastle Jets attacker who previously played for New
Zealand at the Olympic Games, has measured his run into
the squad perfectly. An excellent club season has seen him
(10:04):
called into the national side. He will no doubt get
minutes across these two matches to show what he can
do at international level. Wouldn't it be a great story
of someone who'd never played for the All Whites before
now got themselves a seat on the plane to the US.
Two big games coming up with plenty of talking points,
looking forward to seeing how they play out.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
End of the Chamber, we go. Let's talk Warriors tonight,
eight o'clock Go Media Stadium. Three three from three so far,
four from four seams the most likely outcome against the
West Tigers. Do you have any trepidation or pessimism about
this game from a Warrior's point of view?
Speaker 4 (10:42):
No, because they've got a cheat code this evening and
what is that cheap code? I'll tell you right now.
Roger Tuivarsi Sheik has announced that he's going off to
Wakefield Trinity, and I expect the team will rally around
him and go, wow, what if this saysion, You've been
incredible for this team. We want to see you out
as close to a title as possible with the best
we can do is roll the Tigers tonight. So I
(11:05):
think that might be their cheap code. I might be dreaming,
But they've got others as well, metcalf anyone. The way
that Boyd is playing the size of their pack, it's
a pretty impressive setup. Just I hope they don't read
their own press before they go, and what I know
of the coaching staff, they won't let them read the paper.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
I don't think they even know where to find the paper.
That's it with this team. They are so far removed
from the outside noise that all that matters is what
they are hearing inside their inside their own cone of silence,
if you can call it that. The most important voices
are the voices within their own environment. Yes, they've got
family and friends who I trusted confidence to them, but
(11:49):
I think the Warriors fan base and up the wars
our year, all that sort of thing. While it's nice
to know you've got that weight of support, I don't
reckon it means anything.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
If I ever hear one of those players going, I
think it's our year. That's that they've.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Gone the dumb where he wouldn't have it, would he He
would not allow it. But you look at the team
tonight and and Pompey's back in there after missing last week.
As you say, Luke Metcalfe there, it's very much a
next man up mentality when it comes to the Warriors.
We saw Mitch Barnett of course come back in last
week and make a real impact off the bench. They're
just I don't know, you look at this team. There
(12:22):
doesn't anybody weaknesses in this team.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
And what is it with Jackson Ford? Is he going
to carry on doing what he's doing? If they are
calling Mitch Barnett Barney, can we run Flintstones and start
calling Jackson Ford Fred? Would that make more sense?
Speaker 5 (12:38):
Well?
Speaker 3 (12:39):
You Helmer?
Speaker 4 (12:40):
Sorry?
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Do you know the thing? Last week as well? It
was one hundredth game, right, but he played well and
he won't to think. Speaking to Andrew Webster afterwards, he said, look,
we don't necessarily need milestones to play well. We celebrate milestones,
of course we do, you know, debuts for fifth one hundredths,
but they're not a reason to play well. The reason
we play well is because we're the Warriors and that's
our job.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Yeah, we want to win first and foremost, and that
is that that's your milestone. What happened, blah blah blah.
We won. End of story. That's their job, that's the why.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Let's talk Super Rugby, which is also back in action
tonight in round seven More ONEA Pacific against the Highlanders
at Albany. So we've got Super Rugby at Albany, International
Football at Eden Park and in our role Rugby League
Go media. What a time to be an Auckland sports fan.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Well, no, it's terrible time because you can't see all
of them. It's a disaster. When are you getting there right,
especially if you host a sports cell and news talk
ZB between seven and eight pm. It's an absolute trainer.
But I feel for the Super Rugby teams though, because
these two teams are not having a great year. So
at least someone's going to walk away would win and
(13:46):
some points out of it, although it'll what are they
offering money wise for a drawer?
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Yeah, that's a very good point and it wouldn't be
It wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to
a couple of to chuck a couple of bucks on that.
I just thought the Highlanders were embarrassed last week by
the Hurricanes at home, shipping fifty at home. I don't
care who you're playing. The Hurricanes were running hot, yes,
but you should never leak for to get home.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
No, never, not considering who they've got on board and
what they've done. And they got off to a cracker start.
But isn't that Highlanders? Yeah, made trip and I don't
know what Jamie Joseph would have been like. I like
the term apoplectic and it can't have been that far
away from it, right.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
Yeah, pint peeling off the walls afterwards, no doubt. So
Hurricanes reads tomorrow. Hurricane should win that Blues drew it tomorrow.
Blues should win that Chiefs force that's out in Western Australia.
Chiefs threw away that lead last weekend against the Waratas
to lose. They should beat the force even over there.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
Dog of a trip though, Yeah, you've always got to
take that into account. Why going to the other side
of the planet eight Perth. But it's a long long
way a wave, so I wouldn't put any money either
way on that one. But it's an opportunity to re
establish and that's what they've got to look at more
than anything.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Yeah, they're silic a team, the Chiefs, even after that
lost last week than still in the top six, and
I would imagine, yeah, even with the trip, that they
would be favorites to beat the Force over there. Just
had the one win this season that was the one
over Mwana over here earlier in the season. Busy old
sporting weekend, lots of screens to keep eyes on and
racecars on and race.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
Cars Yes, Japanese Grand Prix very quickly, brilliant time as well.
What does it said eight o'clock on on Sunday night,
I think it is and Suzuka with one thirty r
one of the best corners in Formula one, little crazy
figure eight. It is not well technically it kind of
it is, but it's a kind of squashed figure eight.
This is a great racetrack and we'd like to see
now that the cars and the teams and the drivers
(15:40):
are starting to understand what they're dealing with now too.
There have been some slight adjustments around the electronic aids,
around the batteries, hoping to make it better racing. But
the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and
we'll dine out come Sunday.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Night football, rugby, rugby league and race cars plus a
lot more across the weekend. That's us in the chamber today.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Beating of vix. We've got just the ticket. It's Sports
Vix powered by News Talks IVY.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
And that'll knock Sports for on the head for today
as well. Great pleasure bringing it to you as always,
and we greatly appreciate you listening and subscribing, downloading all
of those sorts of things. Please tell your friends, as
you always say, Dusk, because the more the merry.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
Right now, absolutely spread the love, spread the word. Look
piney and I will actually just talk to herself in
the small studio regardless of who's listing. But it's nice
to feel that it has some purpose. And on that subject,
are you the kind of guy that's going to stand
up in the stand even though you're not commentating your
whites and commentate anyway?
Speaker 3 (16:36):
I don't think so.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
That would be supremely annoying, loud hailo.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
It's not the guy behind it. The movie she said
this is a great, but this but's great watch this.
Speaker 4 (16:45):
But I had that once watching a game of cricket
and a guy sadly for him found out what I
did for a living, and honestly, it would not stop
every couple of balls. He leaned over and gave me
his opinion on what's going on, and I'm like.
Speaker 5 (16:59):
What I was?
Speaker 4 (17:00):
It was very nice to chat, but oh yeah, so
you keep your loud hailo away, all right.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Speaking of the radio and our eight hundred and eighty
ten eightyp sports Talk weeknights seven to eight pm, I
do Monday, dusts Got Tuesday through Friday, and then weekend
Sport Saturday and Sunday midday to three. I think that

Speaker 4 (17:18):
