Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hello there and welcome into the Sportsbooks Podcast, the first
edition for the brand new calendar year. It is Monday,
January nineteen. I'm Jason Fine, It's great to have you
here and we welcome back GJ. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's
most trusted home builder as main partner of the Sportsbooks Podcast.
What do we have for you? In episode one for

(00:42):
the new year, Well, we can celebrate the black Cats
making more history in India, a two to one series
win in their three match ODI series, never been done
by a New Zealand team in India. Before we'll get
the thoughts of Black Cats selector Gavin Larson. How pleased
does z not only get the series win but also
the fact it was done with a number of key

(01:03):
players not in the New Zealand team. How much deck
is building in our black Caps stocks. Clay Wilson pops
into the chamber for a chat the latest and sports
news as well. So without any further or two, let's
get into it.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
In other news.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Let's get underway with a look at some of the
sports stories around today. New Zealand have completed a first
ever One Day International cricket series victory in eight attempts
away against India, winning the final match of their three
match series by forty one runs an indoor.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
U designed and we get so brilliance in the third
drunk Glenfordips finishes off the series and a famous win.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Puduc a famous win indeed. Golfer Daniel Hillier has finished
second at the latest European Tour event in Dubai, pocketing
five hundred and twenty thousand dollars in the process. Hya
says a couple of match play friendly wins over Ryan
Fox before the event instilled some belief.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
We had a couple of nine hole matches and he says, why.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Can't you just be this clutch when you're playing an
actual tournament, because I M a couple of times on the.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Last and Venus Williams has reflected on an historic opening
round defeat at the Australian Tennis Open. The forty five
year old has become the oldest player to compete in
the women's singles at Melbourne. In the Open, era. Yeah,
I had to appreciate the crowd.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
They were right there with me, So they've deserved that
moment and we deserve that moment together. Dissecting the sporting agenda,
it's Sportsfix with Jason Vine.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
You're listening to Sportsfix. History made by the black Caps
in India, a first ever One Day International series win
over India in India, capped by a forty one run
win in Game three in Indoor. Overnight last night, black
Caps head selected Gavin Larsen is with us on Sports Fix. Gav,
how pleased are you with what the side achieved in

(02:58):
India this past week week or so, especially given the
relative and experience of the squad.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
We've probably entered that series with a bit of tre
repidation and chatting with Rob Walter, you know, our head coach.
Before we before we name this team, we knew we
were missing a as you alluded to, you know a
number of players and in particular in the in the
bowling ranks, and we knew we were playing and a
number of grounds that were a big, big scoring ground,
so we knew we would almost never have a high

(03:28):
scoring series on our hands. So it was always going
to be a baptism by fire for the younger, more
inexperienced bowlers. But finally they really stood up.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
When we look at the players who weren't there for
various reasons. It talks about the depth that is building
in the in the national side right now. I guess
you don't really know, do you, until they hit the
grass how they'll go. But did you feel confident with
the fifteen man squad that you had named for this
series in particular, that they could go there and really

(03:58):
do a great job for you?

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yes, I did, you know. I think my learnings that
I took out of my first sort of stands are
of select thing, which was, you know, three years ago. Now,
you know, I knew things were in really good shape.
The high performance programs that New Zealand Cricket are driving
from the top and down through the major associations ours.

(04:22):
You know, they were in really good shape and we
were producing a number of exciting young players and getting
them positioned biney you know, four international cricket and you know,
more often than not, when you know gave someone the
not you know, they didn't look out of place. You know,
some would take a little longer than others. Obviously, and
some really hit the ground running. So look, there's a

(04:45):
lot of good talent around the country, and since I've
been back, it's been reinforced to me that that talent
is there and it's not better to be brutally honest.
You know, at the bottom end of them a contract lists.
You know, there are probably three to five names in
each of them as that I hadn't really had much

(05:06):
to do with before I went away, And I can
promise everyone there's some very exciting talent that's emerging and
that it's going to make for some interesting conversations over
the years.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Well that's what you want. Those are exactly the conversations
you want. Two of your new boys on this particular trip,
Christian Clark leading wicket taker across the three matches with seven,
Jayden Lennox the most economical bowl are going for just
over four across as twenty overus Jesus Agavin Larsen figures.
How impressed were you with those two relative new boys? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (05:38):
No, they couldn't have done any better. Really, Christian got
bored into the home series against the West Indies and
you know, got splinters for a few weeks, but did
an admirable job. And what we did learn about Christian
is that he's a you know, he's a great human being,
good lad and he is some some all round it too,

(06:00):
and I stress around it because he scored. He scores
hundreds as well as sort of potentially taking the new ball.
So to see him, you know, get an offpportunity and
the playing eleven was excellent and I thought he grow
out grasped it with both and and as I said before,
you know, they were very trying conditions for bowling, definitely,
and when you're when you're beholding to the Shamas and

(06:22):
the gulls and the Kohlie's and the ko Raju's of this, well,
gee wis you can't have a tougher introduction, I guess.
And he came through really well. And Jaden, look, I
wasn't surprised. I've watched Jaden develop over the years. He's
he's much cent nourish, it is how I describe him.
He's clever, change of pace, really good command of length

(06:47):
which is crucial, and uses the crease well. So he's
got all the attributes to you know, to have a
nice tenure at ad international level. And it was just
really nice to see and perform so well on that
big stage in such trying conditions.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
You mentioned a really interesting concept there around splinters. You know,
I think we all understand you come into a squad
and you don't necessarily get the play opportunities that you
might have hoped. And there are a couple of players
on this particular too who didn't get a heck of
a lot of game time if any. But is there
still value, significant value in just being in and around
the black Caps environment.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Yeah, yeah, for sure. You don't underestimate, you know, the
sort of experience you can gain by being part of
the widest squad, albeit you're going to be, you know,
tlivering drinks out into the middle on a regular basis.
So Lord Nick Kelly and raiser Michael Ray and Josh Clarkson,
you know, they did that job in that recent series.

(07:43):
Unfortunate for them that they didn't get any game time,
but I know they'll come home having absolutely loved that
experience and they would have, in a bizarre sort of way,
become better cricketers for it too, because I've just gained
that they've gained that experience. It's one piney, we have
to juggle carefully from a selection standpoint, and a certain

(08:04):
guy called Matt Henry who everyone would know, you know,
went through a long period where he sat him behind Alt, Saudi, Wagner, etc.
And then kJ burst onto the scene and you know
he's now reaping the rewards really of that experience that
he gained and now leads our attack.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Exciting times for sure, good stuff. Gav always enjoyed chatting.
Thanks so much, Gavin Larson, black Caps head selector, joining
us on sports Fix. Sports history made in indoor overnight
last night. You might have woken up this morning to
hear this very pleasant news that the black Caps have
beaten India in a one day international series in India

(08:41):
for the very first time seven unsuccessful attempts before now,
but at the eighth time of asking, the black Caps
coming away with a two to one series when courtesy
of the forty one run when they managed in the
third and final one day. Now, the magnitude of this
needs to be put through the filter of the black
Caps players who are not there, and I've made a

(09:02):
list for you. These are the black Caps players who
were not in the Squadane Williamson, Tom Latham, Finn Allen, Lockey, Ferguson,
Tim Seifert, Jacob Duffy, Mitchell Santner, Rutchen, Ravendra, Matt Henry,
Jimmy Nisham, Will O'Rourke and is Ish Sody. I've just
rattled off, what's that about a dozen names of players

(09:25):
who ordinarily would be in the mix for a New
Zealand white ball side. It was a debut series for
Jaden Lennox, a debut series for Christian Clark, just a
third series for Zack Zack Folks and a fourth series
for Mitch Hay. This was a very green and inexperienced side.
No batter in this side had scored three thousand ODII

(09:47):
runs and only one bowler had more than thirty ODI wickets.
They lost that bowler, the captain, Michael Bracewell, for full
fifty overs of the deciding match. So all of these
factors show what a stacked deck it was. And this
was a good Indian side on home wickets with a

(10:08):
sociferous as always crowd baying for their success. For the
black Caps to come out victorious was absolutely impressive and superb.
I just want to mention Jayden Lennox a really impressive
debut series for him, he bowled twenty overs and went
for just eighty four runs to tick over four runs
and over in the modern day ODII game. Absolutely superb.

(10:31):
But the star of the show was one of the
older heads, Darryl Mitchell. Eighty four one hundred and thirty
one not out and one hundred and thirty seven. That's
three hundred and fifty two runs at an average of
one hundred and seventy six, and he was striking at
over one hundred and ten. He led the way, but
in behind him a number of players making their way,

(10:53):
perhaps for the long term, into this black Cap site.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
On the occasion of the first sports Fix podcast for
the year. The occasion of the first Chamber of the year,
UM calls for the news director at News Talks, here'd
be Clay Wilson. Good to see your Clay House.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
Things like we never left Piney, We're back for twenty
twenty six. Great to be here.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Good on you mate. And it started brilliantly for the
black Caps with a first ever One Day International Series
victory against India in India.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
I'm finding it hard.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
To articulate just how impressive this is given the huge
number of players who aren't there for the black Caps.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
Yeah, and the players that are there for India as well.
You know, it says something when Verat Coley scores a
ton in a Odie I game and India don't win
and the black Caps win, and like you say, a
black Caps team that's pretty well under strength given the injuries,
and you know the T twenty World Cup coming up,
and how they've decided to allocate players to this one
day series. So you know, I think people have naturally

(11:58):
drawn comparisons to the Test series triumph back in twenty four.
I don't think you. I mean, how do you top that?
I'm not sure you do. The Test formatters obviously the
most challenging and prestigious format of all, but this is
no mean feed against a white ball Indian team who
have been great in both those formats for a long

(12:19):
time now. And you just go through that lineup obviously mentioned.
I've mentioned Koli, but you could probably mention five or
six other names, couldn't you that are just world class
players in white ball crickets. So a pretty outstanding effort
to go over there in those conditions and nagas series
off them.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
And in their stadium as well. You know, you look
at those grounds and the crowds, and we all know
how much Indian fans love their cricket. But for some
of these younger guys who never would have experienced things
like that. When I say younger, I guess I mean
younger by international experience. I've got like Jayden Lennox, for example,
I think he's in his early thirties, but wouldn't have

(12:57):
had experience of this sort and the pressure cooker of
a venue like that to go over there and for
a guy like that, you know, go for just over
four and over across two ten overs bells others you know,
who have seen completely unaffected by it all. I just
think it is a really really good indication of some

(13:18):
of the depth that is building. The other thing is
also clay. This was kind of shoehorned in this series.
You know, we've got the T twenty World Cup coming up.
There's a five match T twenty series against India starting soon.
This could have been seen as almost an inconvenience. It's
I mean, if it is going to be inconvenient, you
might just go over there and make history.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
I suppose Troytel and those players. That's an inconvenience. I think, yeah,
it's a I mean, if nothing else, a very timely
bit of history. And you know, in terms of boosting
your confidence ahead of a big tournament. Now, like you say,
they've still got five T twenties to come, you know,
they might go out and lose all five of them.

(13:55):
Who knows, such as the strength of India over there
and the fickle nature of T twenties, but you certainly
wouldn't expect that based on the way they've performed in
the one days and they're going to be you know,
further strengthened with some player for this T twenty series
I think as well, so players coming back from injury too.
So I think it's worked out perfectly in terms of

(14:16):
New Zealand cricket, that these that India wanted to play
these games because you've picked up a huge series victory
at a time where you've got a World Cup on
the horizon. Yes, all be at a different format, but
I think most people are going to look at that
and say that is a huge burst of confidence playing
in those conditions, and as we're alluding to before, in

(14:38):
the atmosphere that comes in that part of the world.
Some of these younger players, less experienced players, have certainly
shown that if they're required to step up in the
cauldron of a World Cup environment, that they're very much
capable of performing.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Yep, a great start to the calendar year for the
black Caps. We look forward to the T twenties now
and the T twenty World Cup. A really good start
to the calendar year as well for key we golfer
Daniel Hillier. Blemish free final round six hundred and sixty
five has seen him finish second at the latest European
Tour golf event in Dubai, the small matter of five
hundred and twenty thousand dollars into his bank account, but

(15:15):
just another example of the growing capability and mentality I
think of Daniel Hillier.

Speaker 4 (15:23):
Yeah, and I think adding to that, what shows where
he's at is that he's almost now disappointed to not
win because he has come close a couple of times
last year, came close, I think, got a second, and
you know three or four other top tens. He's at
a level now where we when he gets himself in
this position of these positions to not win for him

(15:44):
as disappointing and you know there's a huge events. You
mentioned some of the names that are featuring or that
featured at this in this tournament. He obviously had that
big breakthrough win at the Betfred British Masters in twenty
three and hasn't you know, won a big tournament since then.
But what started He started this new European Tour season
with I think a sixth and a fifth in Australia

(16:08):
before Christmas, and now to come out in this big
tournament tournament to Dubai in a run second, it shows
that he's right there on the casp and you know,
very much capable of stepping up and winning one of
these big tournaments. And you know, I guess the goal
for him now has just missed out on PGA to
a PGA to a card last season, is to get
himself in a really strong position, which he has done early,

(16:28):
but as the season goes on to then kind of
catapult and join Ryan Fox in the US and you know,
get himself in those among those big names more often.
And you know, I guess then you talk about winning
a major tournament, don't you. But certainly positive signs in
terms of his ability to consistently compete at the top
level of the sport. Yeah, and consistency is something that

(16:49):
mini golfers have found it difficult to come by. But
as you say, yes, a really promising start to the
European Tour season for Daniel Hilly as I'm sure as
you say that PGA Tour card will be well and
truly in his sites for twenty twenty seven.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
Well, I think we got through the first chamber ok
clay on. No doubt it'll be critiqued by by upper
management and the listeners. But regardless of all of that,
thanks for stopping and always good chatting sport with you.

Speaker 4 (17:15):
Thanks Fidie, appreciate it.
