Now using a villion It's Sports Fix with Jason Hine
and Dussy Waltergrave.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Welcome to the Sports Next podcast to Warrior Aaron Clark.
What to start to the season? It was eron, Welcome
on and how good was that Friday night?

Speaker 5 (02:43):
Year Me A great way to start the year. Obviously
long preseason and to start the ear off like that
was pretty pretty special. So hopefully there's more to come.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
A lot of people have said that some preseasons can
be too much and players come back with heavy legs.
I'm presuming you've had the balance just about right so
you weren't shot to pieces before you turned up.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Year Me.

Speaker 5 (03:08):
We got pretty high class since coaches, coaches and everything.
And I've been watching a few of the youtubes about
other teams preseasons and it just looked like they were
getting smashed, or preseason where I think we were pretty lucky.
Bro Like, a lot of our boys come back fit,
so we didn't really have to They didn't really have

(03:29):
to flog us to the point where, you know, it's
like one of those heavy League preseasons. A lot of
a lot of us did a lot of work in
the break and we could come back and just focus
on what we need to focus on, which were the
learnings from last year. And yeah, it's worked to treat
boys are foot and yeah, ready to go on to
twenty twenty six.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Is it obvious when someone comes back from the Christmas
break and they've just gone to chout down too much?
Can you see it in their behavior or the way
they play?

Speaker 5 (03:56):
I think I think the Warriors are just renowned for
that brock because obviously a lot of polyboys and we
all love to eat bro And I think I was
I'm like, I've learned that lesson. When I was younger,
I used to come back and think, because I'm young,
it's just going to happen for me. I can do whatever,
I eat, whatever I want, and it's just going to happen.

(04:17):
But I think the crops change now these younger boys.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
I think.

Speaker 5 (04:22):
The Fisher Harris's have set standards where you have to
work on your break because we're chasing a dream, bro,
which is the Grand Final when you need thirty players
to do that, so you can't afford to have one
off the boat. So yeah, I think a lot of
these young crop have bought in and it's different two
years before.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Yeah. Well, being a professional in anything, especially in sport,
it's not just the season it's twenty four to seven,
it's fifty two weeks a year. You have to do that.
Otherwise you're not being a professional, are you.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
Yeah, man, And I think obviously there's times we let
our head down and we can just enjoy ourselves and
things like that. But with our type of work, and
you can just see in the way the game's going, bro,
it's a lot faster, a lot of a lot of
running for us boys, So we can't afford to let
our bodies go too much. So yes, which is why
a lot of us kipped our body's footing. Yeah, we're

(05:16):
pretty lucky.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Do you wait till middle age? Yaron's going to bite you.

Speaker 6 (05:19):
I tell you you going now, mate, I'm already there, mate,
My body is creaking Buddy every day and these young
boys are Buddy twenty twenty one, eating whatever they want
and the coming foot is I'm just like, oh my gosh.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Aaron Clak joining the program. You talked about you right,
lessens from last season primarily what do you need not
the team? What do you need to approach it just
to fix to work on.

Speaker 5 (05:43):
Yeah, mate, I think the biggest thing for me I
felt obviously my defense. It's probably not also the missed tackles.
It's more the slowing the ruckdown so it can get
a good line to attack the next tackle, which is
That's probably one thing for me is my rock controler
and the ruck and winning every tackle I can. And
I think the other one bro was and I worked

(06:04):
hard at the said during the preseason was because I'm
I love to run the ball and I do all
right at it. I think what the way the game's
going is the thirteen you want to thirteen that can
pass the ball. And my learnings and from last year
was not letting the boar die with me. I need
to feed my horves, feed my outside men so then

(06:25):
they can score the points. And it's probably gonna like
a lot of like people look at stats and all that,
and I'm not really a step person, but a lot of.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
Us be down.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
But I think the bigger picture is about winning games
and what's best for the team. And that's probably something
that I'm going to get used to over this year.
And I'm not having as many carries, but you know,
the bigger picture is our text is going to be
flowing a lot better. And I think that showed in
the first game, Like I probably didn't have as much
carriers as I would have last year, but see how
much the amount of points we can put on when

(06:55):
our harves get the ball and with a bit of
space is make us even better for me, So yeah,
so that's probably the learning for me this year, bro
is finding the balance of when to use my run
and when to pass the ball. And it's not gonna
happen obviously, and that's something that I'm going to work
hard at this year.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Well, you've got your hards. We got some terrifying edge
players that could really utilize that extra space and time
if they get it. So you're still with the old school.
When you get tackled, you got to go down on
your front. You don't go in your back so you
can get that ball out as fast as possible. Is
that still set pretty and true with the game.

Speaker 5 (07:31):
One hundred percent. I think if you look at the
way the game's going if you win the ruck, which
is why I spoke about my defense, Bro, if I
can see on the flip side, if you're a defender,
you want to slow that play down because once you
lose that play, it's hard to stop. And if you're attacking.
Fuck for me, I just want to get down and
get up play the ball as fast as I can.
So then, like you said, we got those strike outside

(07:53):
back strike middles like Fisher hero second run off the
back of it. So yeah, it's yeah, it's definitely still around, Bro.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sports Fix with Jason Vine
and Darcy waldgrave.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
T twenty World Cup was fantastic. No, it didn't end
the way we would have liked it to end, but
at least the black Cats at the point at end
of the competition, and I'd suggest that nobody would have
predicted that they would be challenging India for the title.
At the end of the competition. The black Caps did

(08:28):
particularly well. Know they didn't cover themselves in glory in
the final. But let's understand, the strength of the Indian
T twenty title wave is almost impossible to resist when
they're looking at a backup title, they're looking at being
the first team to defend their title at home. It
was always going to be pushing the proverbial uphell to

(08:51):
get anywhere in that space. But the fact of the
matter is, as we had a handful of weeks of
tremendous cricketing entertainment and now we're back to the grind
of what's happening in New Zealand Cricket. I want to
bash my head on the wall, understand what on earth
is happening at New Zealand Cricket. Who has the best

(09:12):
interests of New Zealand cricket? Where are we going to
next as far as the franchise lead, because plainly T
twenty is the future of world cricket. Where do I
see seeing all of this? What comes first? The check
in or the egg? No one knows. Shane Curry from
the New Zealand Herald wrote a really good piece around
that today, around the mess, around the tumult within New

(09:35):
Zealand Cricket and in which direction it heads where to
go to next. It's a crying shame that it's either
a half full glass when it comes to what's happening
in New Zealand cricket, but for other parties it's a
half empty glass. All I want us to do is
look at the beauty of the glass of New Zealand

(09:55):
cricket itself and focus on what really matters, and that
is the men and women who play the game at
all levels, from grassroots right up to the top.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Is now in session on Sportsfix, end of the chamber
we go. Want to talk about a couple of really
key re signings with the Wellington Phoenix women. In just
a moment, they are the success story of that football club.
As the men continue to struggle along the women are.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
You're laughing, you're laughing at your team, Piney, careful, mate, don't.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
Do that laughing just almost like a like an ironic chuckle.
The women are doing so brilliantly. The men are just
struggling right at the moment, but we all know these
things there swings around anyway. Before we get onto that,
I want to talk about Heath Mills resigning or has
resigned as New Zealand Cricket Plas Association Chief Executive. I
had to read this twice when I saw the release.

(10:48):
Twenty five years he's been in that role. That is
a heck of a tenure, dos it is?

Speaker 3 (10:54):
And he's a fun fact. I remember when he started
because I just started at Radio Sport. So there you go,
twenty five years and this is the same of course
with Rob Nickel who set up the news in Rugby
Plaers Association, same kind of time period. I think Rob
Nickel one of his first interviews when he started it
was with me on Radio Sports. So they're all leaving.
Well Rob's not at the moment. Maybe I should cash

(11:16):
with Chipson as well. But yeah, that is a long
time in that seat and developed the strength of New
Zealand cricket players immeasurably during that time.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
You think about, though, the changes to the game at
international level, and I'm talking mainly the T twenty explosion
in the last let's say decade, and the way that
Heath mills Is had to navigate, you know, the relationship
between the players and New Zealand cricket at a time
where a lot of those players are having their heads
turned by franchise cricket by the ability to earn money

(11:50):
offshore not necessarily take up a central contract. It's a
bit of a minefield for him to navigate. Not just him,
of course those at New Zealand Cricket as.

Speaker 5 (11:59):
Well, but he.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
I mean, imagine the you know, the if we went
back twenty five years, Yeah, when you were at Radio
Sport in the early days and he had just taken
on this job. He couldn't pop possibly have imagined, could he?
Nobody could watch out of T twenty? Could nobody was
wh T twenty first start?

Speaker 3 (12:14):
And we remember that it was that Eden Park game
where they were wearing Beije and Tan the Black Cats
and they'll tease their hair up and having the time
of their life and Ricky panting from memory Taurus apart,
it's only game of T twenty. It doesn't matter roll
on a couple of years. That that is cricket right now.
Is not I hate saying this, but it is. That's
the public face. This is the drive forward for the game.

(12:37):
It's T twenty. This is what the game is now.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Yeah, and look Heath Mills, like Rob Nicol, you know,
they are unashamedly for the players. I mean that's what
they are. They're the chief executive of the Players Association.
They have to drive the you know, the strongest bargain,
that the best deal for their you know, for their
constituents if you like, that's a terrible word, but their players.
And yeah, look it's been been he has to say,

(13:02):
a quarter of a century. I think he's still going
to be involved, isn't. He's moving into a role as
executive chairman of the World Cricketers Association, so that would
suggest that he would still have, you know, a bit
of involvement with the New Zealand Cricket Players Association.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Yeah, well he's been with WCA for quite some time now.
Matt something is also done and so he's across the
global side and the New Zealand side.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
Two. Well, he's he's departing, but a couple of Wellington
Phoenix women's players are staying. And they're two pretty important
players too, a couple of their import strikers, MICHAELA. Woods
the American and Brooke None, the English striker. These two
have combined for well plenty of goals this season. In fact, MICHAELA.
Woods only came in as an injury replacement in January

(13:46):
in seven games Star she scored four goals and chalked
up another five assists nine goal involvements in seven games,
and I wonder they wanted to hold on to her
and Brooke none the same four goals and plenty of
energy and other three assists. I think it is. So
this is a really good piece of business by by
the Wellington Phoenix football department. And look it's a good
time for it too. Five games to go in the

(14:07):
regular season before this Wellington Phoenix women's team has their
first tilt at playoffs football?

Speaker 3 (14:13):
Am I being a bit of a bogain by saying
sometimes maybe the assists are even maybe more important than
the goals when it comes to the more the hole
listic look at the side or is that just too basic?

Speaker 2 (14:26):
Well no, no, not at all, not at all. It's
and the thing about an assist just like a goal,
Really you say that the stat doesn't tell the story.
I mean an assist can be a player beating four
or five defenders and going to the line and crossing
it in and the striker just has to not at home.
Or it can be as simple as just the final
pass in a move of six or seven passes that

(14:47):
then leads to the goal being scored. But look, they're
important enough assists to have a to have a metric
of their own. And look, if you're involved in goals,
whether you're scoring them or helping to set them up,
you're valuable to your football team. So yeah, look, these
two are also they're flatmates, ironically enough, so they would
have had a flat party dou as they celebrated this news.

(15:10):
But the good thing about it is that people are
seeing Wellington as a place they want to stay, not
just a stepping stone. You know, players like these in
the past might have come for a year, both on
one year contracts, and then looked for something supposedly bigger
and or better. But these two have both said in
their media today that they love it here and this
is the place that they feel serves them best in

(15:32):
their careers.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
Right now, well, it's next on the cards for the team.
What are they sitting I want to say, third, fourth
on the table I think, and they've dropped down a
wee bit am I right? And that Who are they
playing next? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (15:44):
Game in hand though, so if they were to win
that game in hand, they'd be back in second place.
They play Brisbane on Saturday part of a double header,
and I'm interested in I'm really interested in this as well,
the double header. You know, normally when there's a women's
and men's double header, it's that order, women first, then
the men. On Saturday, they've flipped it. The men will
play at three, the women will play at six. And
what your hope is that people will hang around for

(16:05):
both games. You know that it's a Saturday relatively friendly times,
so Brisbane raw on Saturday for the women five games
to go and barring an absolute catastrophe, which I can't
see happening, they will play finals football for the first
time ever.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
And they'll just add to that they're not the first
group to do that because New Zealand Cricket had been
up to those tricks recent times with Super Smash and
the light double headers, and they've done it the same way.
The women have been the drawer card and the men
have kicked things off. So it's definitely a turning worm,
which is wonderful to see.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
Absolutely it is. It is indeed, and speaking of.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
Worms, time for us to worm a worm a way
out of here.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
I don't know, it's just trying to find a connection.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
I'm not sure, I've managed to tell me about worms.
Do you remember Lowly Worm? No, the Richard Scarry books,
remember that from the seventies.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
I remember Richard Scary, but not the lonely Lowly worm.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
Lowly Lowly worm. He had the single boot on a
little hat. His name was Lowly. Okay, So when you
say worm, I just think about that immediately. What on
earth is wrong with me? Don't answer that question. Let's
get out eating a vix.

It’s the unlikeliest of criminal partnerships: a devout polygamist from an insular Utah sect joining forces with a shadowy Armenian tycoon from LA. The result - a billion dollar fraud conspiracy. In Kingdom of Fraud, investigative reporter Michele McPhee traces the origins of the extraordinary alliance between Jacob Kingston and Levon Termendzhyan. Together, the two men trigger the largest tax investigation in American history and weave around themselves a web of dirty cops, influential political relationships and transnational money laundering. All this is set against the backdrop of Jacob Kingston’s clan – The Order. A powerful and secretive polygamist organization in Salt Lake City. To whom Jacob is desperate to prove his worth.
