been a long time in the making, this one, hasn't it,
But finally you got yourself over the line. I'd say
stoked and ecstatic is probably an understatement.

Yeah, a little bit relieved as all all all the
emotions into one, but mainly mainly happiness and excitement. To
be honest, like you said, I made my debut for
the All White in two thousand and eight.

You're twice as old now as you were when you debuted.
Get that twice as old.

That's crazy, crazy, Yeah, yeah, I was probably a pro
at the age some of the boys in the squads
would have been being born or a couple of years old.

Pretty crazy and scary stuff.

But I take it as a compliment more than the
other side. You were quite a tear away back then,
are you really were? You burst onto the scene very
very young. How have you changed in your style, playing
your attitude since you were in your late teens, So
now you're in your mid thirties, things must have adjusted
for the better or the worse.
Speaker 7 (03:59):
Well, it's a bit strange because all of my junior
career I've played as a striker, and then obviously you
get to the senior game, men are bigger, strong, probably
not faster, which I gets to my next point is
because I was obviously so quick naturally get put out wide.
So it was initially a bit foreign because, like I said,
I saw myself as the number nine the whole time,
(04:20):
and then for probably up until about twenty eight and
nine years old, I was playing out wide victory. You
think that victory is playing very wide. When I came
back to the Phoenix with Ernie too high and wide
striker is not really a central striker. It was only
when I really played that one year and Victory moved
in and as a nine, I went to Sydney. So
(04:41):
the last five years that played back to where I
was probably the most comfortable. So without design, I've had
a few changes and had to sort of re you know,
redesign how I play and how I look at the
game as well. So it's been interesting to keep during
this fresh, to be honest, and takes a bit of skill,
I guess to do that, but I've really enjoyed moving
(05:02):
back central.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
You're an elastic player is probably the best way to
put it. You can move around all over the show.
You said you're comfortable the space. Now, is that how
basis going to use you?
Speaker 7 (05:12):
I would think so. I think he's deployed more as
a central player obviously the last few windows with Chris
missing through injury, but I think he probably does like
that I can play anywhere behind that too, but we
do have a lot of really great options in those positions. Yeah,
I think they know that I'll be ready and prepared
to play anywhere, and I'm happy to as well. To

be honest, we're going to a World Cup, so I play.
I'll play right back, I'll play left back.

And could you play in goal or not?
Speaker 7 (05:41):
I could?

I'm not fucking all.

Well, we talked about Darren Bezie the coach before. I'm
presuming he warned you before he gave you the phone
call or was it just straight off the bat bro
you're playing?
Speaker 7 (05:55):
Yeah, no, no, no warning before the call. He told
us in the group chat that would be getting calls
if we were in or not. So regardless, you get
a call from Bass. So getting the phone call was
not necessarily a good thing, you know. So I got
the call at school pick up, like I said, waiting
for the kids, and so nervous stuff. You started to
(06:16):
think a thousand different things, a little bit of small
talk and then he said, you know, are you ready
to go to the World Cup. So then they're all
just a bit of relief, like I said, happiness. So yeah,
still pretty nerve wracking. As confident as you want to
be that you'll be there, and you think positively, there's
always that a little bit of you know, and when
you get the call, it feels great.

The listeners can't see this, but we're seeing in a
zoom right now, And I've never seen a grin like
this that's gone for.

You've got to celebrate these moments. This is why you
play the game. You try and be all call as

Exactly, I've learned along the way, as we've asked, how
I changed. I went years not really celebrating wins and
not you know, going crazy, but normalizing winning. I guess,
and I think you get olad. You learn to appreciate,
like even small wins. This is obviously a big win
in a big moment, but you learn to appreciate even

a you know, a terrible one nil win. You know
you played terribly by you won one nil. You think
that's a great, you know result, great three points for us.
So I definitely appreciate things a lot more and try
to take it all in.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
You. I seen you were doing school run when you
got the news, like I'm an old dad, but I
got it done eventually. How much has that change the
way you prepare and your attitude towards games now that
your pop's all mighty Because it's a huge change.
Speaker 7 (07:42):
Yeah, it's honestly given me a bit more of a
drive to be honest. Like I said before, a little
bit you'd sort of go through the motions a bit,
not go through the motions as are not put in
the work, but just sort of normalize the day to day.
Having the kids given me a bit more I think
strength and a bit more drive to keep pushing, to
(08:04):
give them something to be proud of, you know, to
be honest, and I think the past four or five
years it's definitely, yeah, pushed me on to to keep
going and keep achieving some goals that I had in mind.

A very special day for the twenty six players named
in Darren Baisley's all white squad for the upcoming FIFA
World Cup. This tournament could be game changing, career changing
for many of these players, who will put themselves well
and truly front and center on a global footballing scale.
History is full of World Cups where players have come

in relatively unknown from various countries around the world, made
their mark, caught the eye of big, big clubs around
the world and signed for those clubs and gone on
to have wonderful club careers.

This is the.

Opportunity now for these twenty six players, well, not necessarily
all twenty six, particularly the one who coming to the
back end of their careers, the likes of Chris Wood,
who was all already forged a wonderful, wonderful career in
the Premier League, and the likes of perhaps Tommy Smith
and Michael Boxel who are coming towards the end of
their careers. But what about some of these younger players,
(09:23):
the likes of a Lachland Bayless, a Marco Staminich, Ben
old A Jesse Randall, all of whom are currently playing
at good clubs, or in Randall's case, about to join
a pretty handy Scottish Premier League club. But the footballing
world is a very big place, and all eyes will
be on this World Cup in June and July. If
(09:46):
any of those players I've just mentioned, or anybody who
takes the field in New Zealand's three pool games and
hopefully beyond that as well, has a tournament to remember,
they will find their agent's phone running hot. There is
no better shop window for the global football world than
the Football World Cup. So while these players will hop
(10:09):
on the plane next week and be doing everything they
can to make us proud and to represent the all
Whites with pride, they'll know in the back of their
minds that their performances in the United States and Canada
in June could well be something that kicks very positively
into their club careers as well. What an opportunity lies
(10:30):
ahead of the chosen twenty six.

But I do want to give some thoughts on the
all white squad that was named earlier on today. Fairly predictable,
I think from Darren Baisley. I said yesterday to a
couple of people that I think most football fans can
probably write down twenty three or four of the names.
The only real points of contention were who the third
goalkeeper would be and Michael vaud has got the nod
(11:14):
there due to his excellent recent form for Auckland FC.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
He's been in All White before, not for a while.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
But it was in the most recent squad along with
Crokham and Paulson, so he's earned his boarding pass. And
Tommy Smith this is the big talking point. I think
Tommy Smith, who apart from Chris Wood, was the only
player in this squad who also went to the twenty
ten World Cup in South Africa. He's playing in the
fifth tier of English football at the moment, has been
(11:40):
a bit sporadic in his appearances and I think a
lot of people thought, well, hey, has that ship sailed?
Has Tommy Smith done his dash? But Darren Baizley explained
at the press conference a few hours ago that they
look at more than what happens on the field. They
do look in a twenty six man squad at what
happens off it as well, and they firmly believe that
Tommy Smith can add a lot off the field as
(12:04):
as much as he can add on it. Because all
things being equal, Darcy's probably not going to play at
the World Cup. So what do you want from your
players who aren't going to necessarily take the field.
Speaker 5 (12:13):
It should be called a non playing reserve, right, it's
pretty close.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Yeah, yeah, But I mean he's still, to all intentsive purposes,
he's part of the squad and if called upon, he
will be able to take the field. But I think
in a squad of twenty six there is room for
someone a drive standards off the field, particularly among the
players who probably know in their heart of hearts that
injury aside, they're not going to play. You know, twenty
six man squad I reckon sixteen seventeen realistically would take
(12:39):
the field in the United States and Canada. So the
other nine or ten, what do you want from those
players in terms of the dynamic, what they bring to
the squad in other ways? And that's why Tommy Smith
has got his boarding pass.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
Yeah, it's culture, isn't it? More than anything else. And
when you've got a guy like Chris Wood has been
there before and Tom's the only other guy who has,
they don't need to put all of that on him
because he's got goals to score. That's going to be
his interest, so he can play that older role. Are
you overly disappointed by this? Attorney reckon, maybe they should
have gone youth or if this makes sense, No.

I think it makes sense.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
I think you look at a World Cup and it's
in isolation. You know, people say, oh, you should bring
people in for experience, people for the future, all that
sort of stuff. There are enough young guys in this
team who are going to be there for the next
couple of World Cups. I don't think there's any issue there.
I don't mind it. Actually, if it had been a
squad of twenty three, I might have taken issue. But
twenty six I think there is room for a culture captain,
(13:33):
if we can call them that, and Tommy Smith I
think will add a lot of value around this team.

So well, you saw on the team now, Piney, I
need to know you see you Reckon. You could predict
most of it absolutely, so there's no real surprises. Tommy
Smith was the debatable player, no doubt about that. But
now you've seen them all, how are you feeling now
about it? Because it's getting closer and closer and closer,
and this is a real goal, isn't it For the
start of the tournament.

Yeah, it's a good squad. It's a good squad and Yeah,
it was, as I say, fairly predictable. I think most
people knew the guts of it, and the players on
the fringes like Tommy Smith, like Michael Vaud you know,
aren't going to play. So I think we'd all predicted
the key players. I just you know what it is.
As you say it, Bangs are gone for the start
of the run towards the World Cup. I understand the

players jet off to the United States mid next week
and or maybe no, sorry, it's it's the week after.

I think they, you know, obviously, will go straight into
fully focused World Cup mode. So now the team's name,
we can start thinking about, you know, starting elevens. We'll

for these players and their families today to be named
in the squad.

Right, let's push that to one side now, like Brussels
sprouts on a dinner plate, although they're actually not bad
depending on how they're prepared. Let's look to the magic
round and you're going to be over there this weekend
broadcasting Weekend Sport from there, which is tremendous for you.
What a place to be. It's got a future right
in the futures. It's staying still.

Yeah, the the instance state government secured a contract extension
to twenty thirty two. And you know that there are
other cities that would love to have Magic Round in
their city simply for the influx of fans and the
boost of the local economy. But yeah until at least

So yeah, that's a real show of faith, isn't it

The next question is when are christ j It's going

Buds were saying, oh we want to have it in
Auckland and there was whispers about taking it to Dunedin.
I think if you're going to have a legacy weekend,
you know, I mean Magic Round, I don't. We didn't
start in Brisbane, but since it's been there. It's been tremendous,
you know, and I think this is a reward for that.

I feel like christ Church should host Super Around at
least next year. Give them a chance, give them a
chance down a second one, and then we can make
some decisions. But yeah, I feel as though these sorts
of things need to have a destination that is the
same year on year on years, so you know every year. Okay,
that's the weekend I go to Brisbane. That's the weekend
I go to christ Church.

And just lastly, Jason, going to ask you about this
because you're going over into the thick of it. Warriors.
This is a home game for them and they're taking
on the home team and the Brisbane Broncos are set.

proof of this hopefully over the weekend. They say that
the loudest fan base apart from the Broncos and even
including them, is the Warriors fan base. They get to

fact that the Warriors and the Broncos are playing one
another and the Penulton match of Magic Round on Sunday

afternoon is just so mouthwatering a prospect. I just can't
wait to be in there and amongst all of those

do have a lot of really great options in those positions. Yeah,
I think they know that I'll be ready and prepared
to play anywhere, and I'm happy to as well. To

Well, we talked about Darren Bezie the coach before. I'm
presuming he warned you before he gave you the phone
call or was it just straight off the bat bro
you're playing?

Yeah, no, no, no warning before the call. He told
us in the group chat that would be getting calls
if we were in or not. So regardless, you get
a call from Bass. So getting the phone call was
not necessarily a good thing, you know. So I got
the call at school pick up, like I said, waiting
for the kids, and so nervous stuff. You started to
(06:16):
think a thousand different things, a little bit of small
talk and then he said, you know, are you ready
to go to the World Cup. So then they're all
just a bit of relief, like I said, happiness. So yeah,
still pretty nerve wracking. As confident as you want to
be that you'll be there, and you think positively, there's
always that a little bit of you know, and when
you get the call, it feels great.
Speaker 5 (06:35):
The listeners can't see this, but we're seeing in a
zoom right now, And I've never seen a grin like
this that's gone for.
Speaker 4 (06:41):

You've got to celebrate these moments. This is why you
play the game. You try and be all call as
a cucumber. That's not you, is it?

Exactly, I've learned along the way, as we've asked, how
I changed. I went years not really celebrating wins and
not you know, going crazy, but normalizing winning. I guess,
and I think you get olad. You learn to appreciate,
like even small wins. This is obviously a big win
in a big moment, but you learn to appreciate even
(07:14):
a you know, a terrible one nil win. You know
you played terribly by you won one nil. You think
that's a great, you know result, great three points for us.
So I definitely appreciate things a lot more and try
to take it all in.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
You. I seen you were doing school run when you
got the news, like I'm an old dad, but I
got it done eventually. How much has that change the
way you prepare and your attitude towards games now that
your pop's all mighty Because it's a huge change.
Speaker 7 (07:42):
Yeah, it's honestly given me a bit more of a
drive to be honest. Like I said before, a little
bit you'd sort of go through the motions a bit,
not go through the motions as are not put in
the work, but just sort of normalize the day to day.
Having the kids given me a bit more I think
strength and a bit more drive to keep pushing, to
(08:04):
give them something to be proud of, you know, to
be honest, and I think the past four or five
years it's definitely, yeah, pushed me on to to keep
going and keep achieving some goals that I had in mind.

A very special day for the twenty six players named
in Darren Baisley's all white squad for the upcoming FIFA
World Cup. This tournament could be game changing, career changing
for many of these players, who will put themselves well
and truly front and center on a global footballing scale.
History is full of World Cups where players have come

in relatively unknown from various countries around the world, made
their mark, caught the eye of big, big clubs around
the world and signed for those clubs and gone on
to have wonderful club careers.

This is the.

Opportunity now for these twenty six players, well, not necessarily
all twenty six, particularly the one who coming to the
back end of their careers, the likes of Chris Wood,
who was all already forged a wonderful, wonderful career in
the Premier League, and the likes of perhaps Tommy Smith
and Michael Boxel who are coming towards the end of
their careers. But what about some of these younger players,
(09:23):
the likes of a Lachland Bayless, a Marco Staminich, Ben
old A Jesse Randall, all of whom are currently playing
at good clubs, or in Randall's case, about to join
a pretty handy Scottish Premier League club. But the footballing
world is a very big place, and all eyes will
be on this World Cup in June and July. If
(09:46):
any of those players I've just mentioned, or anybody who
takes the field in New Zealand's three pool games and
hopefully beyond that as well, has a tournament to remember,
they will find their agent's phone running hot. There is
no better shop window for the global football world than
the Football World Cup. So while these players will hop
(10:09):
on the plane next week and be doing everything they
can to make us proud and to represent the all
Whites with pride, they'll know in the back of their
minds that their performances in the United States and Canada
in June could well be something that kicks very positively
into their club careers as well. What an opportunity lies
(10:30):
ahead of the chosen twenty six.

I want to maybe dominate for the first part of it.

But I do want to give some thoughts on the
all white squad that was named earlier on today. Fairly predictable,
I think from Darren Baisley. I said yesterday to a
couple of people that I think most football fans can
probably write down twenty three or four of the names.
The only real points of contention were who the third
goalkeeper would be and Michael vaud has got the nod
(11:14):
there due to his excellent recent form for Auckland FC.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
He's been in All White before, not for a while.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
But it was in the most recent squad along with
Crokham and Paulson, so he's earned his boarding pass. And
Tommy Smith this is the big talking point. I think
Tommy Smith, who apart from Chris Wood, was the only
player in this squad who also went to the twenty
ten World Cup in South Africa. He's playing in the
fifth tier of English football at the moment, has been
(11:40):
a bit sporadic in his appearances and I think a
lot of people thought, well, hey, has that ship sailed?
Has Tommy Smith done his dash? But Darren Baizley explained
at the press conference a few hours ago that they
look at more than what happens on the field. They
do look in a twenty six man squad at what
happens off it as well, and they firmly believe that
Tommy Smith can add a lot off the field as
(12:04):
as much as he can add on it. Because all
things being equal, Darcy's probably not going to play at
the World Cup. So what do you want from your
players who aren't going to necessarily take the field.
Speaker 5 (12:13):
It should be called a non playing reserve, right, it's
pretty close.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Yeah, yeah, But I mean he's still, to all intentsive purposes,
he's part of the squad and if called upon, he
will be able to take the field. But I think
in a squad of twenty six there is room for
someone a drive standards off the field, particularly among the
players who probably know in their heart of hearts that
injury aside, they're not going to play. You know, twenty
six man squad I reckon sixteen seventeen realistically would take
(12:39):
the field in the United States and Canada. So the
other nine or ten, what do you want from those
players in terms of the dynamic, what they bring to
the squad in other ways? And that's why Tommy Smith
has got his boarding pass.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
Yeah, it's culture, isn't it? More than anything else. And
when you've got a guy like Chris Wood has been
there before and Tom's the only other guy who has,
they don't need to put all of that on him
because he's got goals to score. That's going to be
his interest, so he can play that older role. Are
you overly disappointed by this? Attorney reckon, maybe they should
have gone youth or if this makes sense, No.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
I think it makes sense.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
I think you look at a World Cup and it's
in isolation. You know, people say, oh, you should bring
people in for experience, people for the future, all that
sort of stuff. There are enough young guys in this
team who are going to be there for the next
couple of World Cups. I don't think there's any issue there.
I don't mind it. Actually, if it had been a
squad of twenty three, I might have taken issue. But
twenty six I think there is room for a culture captain,
(13:33):
if we can call them that, and Tommy Smith I
think will add a lot of value around this team.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
So well, you saw on the team now, Piney, I
need to know you see you Reckon. You could predict
most of it absolutely, so there's no real surprises. Tommy
Smith was the debatable player, no doubt about that. But
now you've seen them all, how are you feeling now
about it? Because it's getting closer and closer and closer,
and this is a real goal, isn't it For the
start of the tournament.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, it's a good squad. It's a good squad and Yeah,
it was, as I say, fairly predictable. I think most
people knew the guts of it, and the players on
the fringes like Tommy Smith, like Michael Vaud you know,
aren't going to play. So I think we'd all predicted
the key players. I just you know what it is.
As you say it, Bangs are gone for the start
of the run towards the World Cup. I understand the
(14:18):
players jet off to the United States mid next week
and or maybe no, sorry, it's it's the week after.
My apologies, it's it's two weeks away.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
You're so keen Pine. I want them to go next week, and.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
I think they, you know, obviously, will go straight into
fully focused World Cup mode. So now the team's name,
we can start thinking about, you know, starting elevens. We'll
do that another day. But yeah, a really special moment
for these players and their families today to be named
in the squad.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
Right, let's push that to one side now, like Brussels
sprouts on a dinner plate, although they're actually not bad
depending on how they're prepared. Let's look to the magic
round and you're going to be over there this weekend
broadcasting Weekend Sport from there, which is tremendous for you.
What a place to be. It's got a future right
in the futures. It's staying still.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Yeah, the the instance state government secured a contract extension
to twenty thirty two. And you know that there are
other cities that would love to have Magic Round in
their city simply for the influx of fans and the
boost of the local economy. But yeah until at least
twenty thirty two, the same year Brisbane hosts the Olympics.
So yeah, that's a real show of faith, isn't it
(15:30):
by the NRAL to say Brisbane.

You are it.

The next question is when are christ j It's going
to seal it as well? For if they've got in
their super Magic Round.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Yeah, well I guess that's the other thing too. I
mean legacies are built over time, aren't they. And as
soon as Super Round happened, all of a sudden, Carl
Buds were saying, oh we want to have it in
Auckland and there was whispers about taking it to Dunedin.
I think if you're going to have a legacy weekend,
you know, I mean Magic Round, I don't. We didn't
start in Brisbane, but since it's been there. It's been tremendous,
you know, and I think this is a reward for that.
(16:02):
I feel like christ Church should host Super Around at
least next year. Give them a chance, give them a
chance down a second one, and then we can make
some decisions. But yeah, I feel as though these sorts
of things need to have a destination that is the
same year on year on years, so you know every year. Okay,
that's the weekend I go to Brisbane. That's the weekend
I go to christ Church.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
And just lastly, Jason, going to ask you about this
because you're going over into the thick of it. Warriors.
This is a home game for them and they're taking
on the home team and the Brisbane Broncos are set.

Ups that I simply cannot wait, honestly, they say, And
I'll be able to sort of give a bit of
proof of this hopefully over the weekend. They say that
the loudest fan base apart from the Broncos and even
including them, is the Warriors fan base. They get to
Brisbane and they take over the joint. So yeah, the
fact that the Warriors and the Broncos are playing one
another and the Penulton match of Magic Round on Sunday

afternoon is just so mouthwatering a prospect. I just can't
wait to be in there and amongst all of those
Broncos fans, all of those Warriors fans sold out at
sun Corpse Stadium. I kind of wish you could come
with dars as I'm saying this, we could take the
Chamber to Brisbane.

Wow, that's okay, but I don't think the budget extends
that far. Piety, But that's good. You're gonna do a
