Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello there, welcome into the Sports Fix podcast to particularly
warm welcome to those of you joining us for the
first time. We're here an association with GJ. Gardner Holmes,
New Zealand's most trusted home buildup on Thursday, the nineteenth
of March. I'm Jason Pine.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
My name is Darcy Walter Grave, and again I like
the way you said that. Welcome to the newbies, but
we are not forgetting the people who are the cement
of this podcast. Great to have your on board as well.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Indeed the base of the pyramid and the cream on
top of the pyramid who we hope to convert to
the base. Anyway, we're getting carried away with the terrible
analogy here.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Talks some sport.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
I would have talked Warriors and Black Caps with your dar.
So I've got the latest sports news coming in terms
of a fresh different voice from the two of us
on Sports Fox.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Who we're hearing from, Well, I sent this TV email
and you didn't know who are talking about it? Took
a while at the boat called Croczilla. Now you know,
don't chat, I do.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
White Crockett one of the great Crusaders front rollers and
a pretty handy All Blacks front roller as well.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
When he's off to the Australian Capital Territory to celebrate
James Slipper, who will pars him with the most caps
in Super Rugby when he plays this weekend. So we'll
catch up with a big one.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Talk about looking forward there and from White Croczilla Crockett
on the podcast. Let's get into it.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
In other news, let's.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Get you underway with a look at some of the
big sports stories around today. A special father and son
moment has been captured ahead of the Blues trip to
Sydney to face the warratas in Super Rugby on the weekend.
Peyton Spencer has been named to debut. First to learn
of the news former Blues and All Blacks Dad, Carlos.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Yeah, so off to Sydney Onsney.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
I love that Barcelona have beaten Newcastle seven to two
in the second leg of their Champions League Round of
sixteen tie and the referees.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Decided no time to be added on.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
He's blown Barcelona scoring seven goals in a blistering second.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Half that saw them hit four.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
They advanced eight to three on aggregate, joining Real Madrid,
Arsenal PSG and Sporting Lisbon as quarter finalists and Warriors
half fact Tanna Boyd has stamped his approval of NRL
League debutante Luke Hanson ahead of Saturday's match at Newcastle.
They'll pair up in the halves with Hanson at five eight,
a combo scene regularly in the twenty twenty five title
(02:50):
winning Reserve Grade side. I love playing with Luky.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
He's such a bart play like their underfooty and I
feel like he plays his best footy when he's got
space and he's a tough hull.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Bugger and he will definitely go after him with heat,
the tent use and a villion.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
It's Sportsfix with Jason Pine and Dussy Waterbrey and.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
It's a warm welcome to the program to Wyatt Crocket
if you don't know why it Crockett, former All Black,
former Crusaders player and up until well coming up this weekend,
the most capped Super rugby player on the planet two
hundred and two appearances for the Red and Blacks, is
with US now you're going to get eclipsed white? How
(03:31):
do you feel about that?
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Makes the motion? Now, I'm I'm real stoke for Slips.
It's he's a good man, he's gone through, he's had
a great career, played for a heck of a long time.
A lot of scrum machines hurt, and yeah, it's good
to see it going to another front ruwh so happy.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
It's bizarre though, like front rower, I mean, this is
a fairly aggressive part of the game you're evolved in,
and it's fairly high when it comes to turn over.
So how is it that too of you lumps have
managed to get over two hundred? What do you put
that down to?
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Oh, probably a couple of stubborn buggers that don't like
giving other people opportunities and keep rolling out there, I'd say.
But now, I suppose we're pretty fortunate that our roles
didn't require too much pace, which is something you lose
with age. So there's a few different factors. But but yeah,
it's I suppose I suppose quite a few of the
(04:25):
people up the top end of the list are front
rowers or or type Fords locks, the locks of the
white locks of this world and yeah, some others. So yeah,
I suppose it's that type ford, you know, slow twitch
fib the thing that got us through that you.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Said it not me. So Slipper playing against all slips
as you call Michael Bertini is my mate. Now I
get it a slip. So what do you remember about
your games actually up against James Slipper?
Speaker 4 (04:55):
You will, obviously, both of us being loose heeds, we
were on opposite sides of the scrum, so there wasn't
that one on one battle. But yeah, you know it's
it's an ape man. I suppose if at a scrum.
So you know, we were competing for a long time.
He was at the Reds, I was at the Crusaders,
and we had some good battles in those early years
(05:15):
for him or sort of the middle of my career.
And you know, I think the thing that stands out
for me with Slips is that, you know, he was,
you know, just a real well rounded player, good scrummager,
great around the park, and you know, just he's one
of those other also another attribute about him, he's just
just quite pretty unassuming guy that just went about his work.
(05:40):
Probably had a few running battles with some of the
other players, but but slips with someone that just got
about his work and didn't there wasn't too much banter
between us.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
I suppose how many scrums do you think you packed down,
White Crockett per game on average? What do you reckon?
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Oh? Good question. Yeah, I think there was a period
there were there was too many. There's probably you know,
fifteen to twenty for a while there, But I think
the numbers have come down a bit. Seems to be
less scrummaging in games, I think, but it's probably down
somewhere around about ten eight to teen scrums these days.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Extrapolate that and work out how many scrums you've packed
together that both of you are on each the same
side of the scrun. That is a lot of time
spent bent down in an uncomfortable place.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
It really is. And that doesn't count all the all
the training sessions and all the all the micro sessions
that you do as well. So it's a lot of
time with someone pushing right behind you into an unmovable force,
and there's a fair bit of compression on the spine.
I think my kids remind me actually that I've lost
(06:51):
an inch in height there, reckon over the last fifteen
to twenty odd years, so I'm sure Slips has probably
lost a bit as well.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
I can, I can soul apprecire you white. I really
can just start hanging upside down on a tree like
a bat. You're heavy enough, it'll drag you back down
to you Not sure.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
I'm not sure if I'm coordinated to do that.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
I don't think. I don't listen to me when it
comes physical advice. They haven't got the skills at all.
You're going over jed Are and flying you over. How cool?
Speaker 4 (07:25):
Yeah, I think, you know, obviously, it's a it's a
bit of a journey to get to Canber and hopefully
in my hopefully my flights arrive and pick me up
on time. And I know there's been a a few
issues were flying these days, but it'd be nice to
get over there for James. I think it's the right
thing to do to go over there and present him
(07:46):
with the hand over the baton to the to the
new most kept super rugby player of all time. So yeah,
just I think it's just one of those moments you've
sort of got to do it, and it's a big moment,
you know. Although James is one of those guys who
probably won't enjoy the accolades and all the attention, it's
still it's a massive moment for him and his family.
(08:07):
And so for me to go and through the thing,
do my thing and and hand that on, I think
it's just part of that part of that process. And
in year no, it's it'll be a big moment for him.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Sportscsxcess, the archaic and bizarre concept of the spirit of
the game has raised its ugly head again. Surprise, surprise,
it's in cricket, the last bastion of we are gentlemen
and we simply don't behave like that on the park.
The story here is a runout Pakistan took on Bangladesh.
(08:41):
It was the second One Day International in Dhaka. It
was an unusual dismissal that caused this ruckus. Mahdi Hassan
mraz the Bangladesh captain, was bowling his little offspin tweakers
down to Muhammad at Riswan with Agar at the non
striker's end. So what happened. Rizwan defended the ball back
(09:02):
down the pitch again towards where Aga was standing. The
ball rolled towards him. Mahdi moved with his hand to
try and field it. Then Aga tried to pick up
the ball. He presumed it was a dead ball. He
was wrong, but Maras beat him to the punch. He
grabbed the ball under under onto the stumps and Agar
(09:22):
was a long way out of his ground. So the
umpire sent the decision upstairs, and the umpire had no
choice but to give him out. A gar freaked out,
threw his gloves on the ground. He left the field
and a cloud of fury, but Bangladesh were unrepentant. That
is completely understandable. The concept of sportsmanship at this level
(09:45):
has no place. It's professional sport. Now. It doesn't matter
about whether you'll do the guy a favor or feel
good about what you've done in the middle of the park,
because you're playing within the spirit of the game. You
don't get paid for the spirit of the game. I
understand at a lower level, maybe there's a wee bit
about that in cricket and every other sport, but not
(10:07):
at this level. Rules are rules, hard and fast. The
whole concept with the spirit of the game to me
is manifestly insane, and this argument only ever comes up
when somebody is dismissed as a direct result of what
they perceive as someone not adhering to the concept of
the spirit of the game. Let it go. It's a kak,
(10:30):
it's irrelevant and it has no place at the highest
level of modern sport.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax. End of the.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Chamber, We go the Warriors. I wanted to talk about
the Warriors with you today, Dars, because obviously the team
was named a couple of days ago. We haven't had
the chance you and I had to chat about it.
No chance, Nikol Klukstar, no Chanell, Harris Tavita. No problem
or a problem.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
If you see it and you bring it as a problem,
that will become a problem. But it's not a problem.
We know this from the Warriors of years gone by.
Last year Tanner Boyd turned up. Was a problem when
he first started playing. Probably wasn't ideal, but look at
him now. It's constantly replacing players and understanding. You need
(11:16):
that depth of experience when it comes to the crunch,
like towards the end of the season. So Luke Hanson,
I don't know anything about him, but a baron, he's
got a bit of game. He will take this and
he'll carry it. For as long as he needs before
he starts playing first grade full time. I think it's
not great for the team, but hugely valuable for the
(11:36):
team's prospects if that makes sense.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
It does, And what I like about Luke Hanson is
the fact he's coming in alongside Tanner Boyd and last
year in the reserve grade side that swept all before
them until Tanner Boyd, of course was called into the
top side. The two of them formed a very potent
halves combination, so they already have the connection. Yes, it
was in reserve grade, but I think a connection is
(11:59):
a connection, especially at six and seven, isn't it, regardless
of what level you're playing.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
It absolutely they've got to know each other's games. And
it's like when you're playing in, for example, and rugby,
if you're not used to that position, you can't think
in that position. You just have to do. And I
think the halves and rugby leagu's the same deal. It's
got to be automatic and you need to know and
trust the player inside and outside, and that's what we're getting.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
What about at the back, Charlestoko klik Star has always
been a very good player. We know this is still
a good player, but we'll miss this one. Tane to
old Piki Yah. Well, I'm a big fan of this.
I'm quite looking forward to seeing how he goes again.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Well as a tiny man myself.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Wow that's tough on Tayne.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Oh wow, come on, actually hold on, I've just looked
it up. He may look small on the paddock one
hundred and yeah, he's got two centimeters and about ten
kg on me. Okay, so I'm not a tiny man
like him. But he not shot the lights out last week,
didn't he? So for him to crawl in same deal
though last year we saw a lot of tame to
(13:04):
a piky and he's got that experience and he can
now bring it back to to first grade again. But
you know what, I'm really interested in this teamless one
that really stood out and it would have definitely been
covering off if you look way down the bottom man,
you go past the Enterchaine to the reserves and you
look down the bottom of as Oh look, Mitch Barnett. Yes,
(13:27):
now that I don't know what's going to happen or not,
but he's been named so he's fit, so he might
and of course just to add him jet clearing this
one for the future too, So all pretty exciting really
for this weekend up against the Knights who have been
devastated with such big injuries.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Yeah, no, Calen Pong and o'dylan brown Man. You're gonna
lose two players, your two best players. But they've started well.
They've got two wins from two as well. So two
unbeaten sides going head to head five o'clock New Zealand
Times Saturday afternoon. Looking forward to that one. The cricket
series series plural going on at the moment. Our Black
Caps and White Ferns up against their South African counterparts
in T twenty series around the Place. Both series tied
(14:04):
up at one All Eden Park tomorrow night or afternoon
and into the evening. Is this grabbing your attention? Is
this grabbing your interest? This T twenty series, both the
men and the women?
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Well you know the answer to that. I love cricket
and I'm a sports broadcast, so of course I'm going
to climb into it. But I can understand why people
look at it and go, I'm not watching this. These
are not the two best teams on the park, especially
for the men's sides. The women's side maybe not so
much the case. But the men's side this is second
string stuff. But again we go back to younger players
(14:41):
coming through, providing and showing their worth in a series.
It doesn't really count for much, does it. And these
guys get an opportunity to have a bit of a
feel around at that top ish level because their opposition
aren't at the very top either. Valuable experience. But I
understand why people just check out because it's not the
top of the tree. Is it's not the top table.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
It really isn't, not in the men But you know what,
That's why I'm more interested, I think in the women's series,
because it is the top women's side, certainly the New
Zealand side, and I can only assume until I hear
evidence to the contrary, this top South African side as well.
They've got a T twenty World Cup coming up in
two or three months in the UK, so these are
vital games. And watching Sophie Devine come back into the team,
(15:23):
watching this this new you know, opening partnership with is
He Gaye's given given the you know, the pinch hit
a role at the top merely Kerr.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
I always love.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Watching Medy Kerr play cricket and at one all, I mean,
South Africa are a good cricket team in T twenty
women's as well. I'm actually, I've got to say it
to us more interested in the women's series than the
men's series.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Fair cop, Absolutely, I know what you're saying there. I'm
buying into that. And of course when they go to
the T twenty World Cup in a couple of months,
they're defending a title and Dad is so good players
folding through and getting to the top and lead to
who who as well. She's retired from One Day internationals,
as is Sophie Divine, but she'll be turning up for
(16:03):
the last couple of games causing a right rucker. So
she for me, if I had anyone to fight for
my life in the game of women's cricket, it'd be her.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
I think it did be a line of people wanting
her to bat or to fight for their lives in
T twenty. So yeah, tomorrow to forty five women's game
followed by the men at Eten Park. Hopefully a good
crowd for both games because as I say, I think
that women's stuff in particular is a really compelling watch.
At the moment, I reckon that'll just about do us
in the chamber for today.
