It's an incredible privilege to be stepping into this role
and I am really energized about what we have ahead
of us.

What drove you to the role? Why did you apply
for this? I mean it was open access. Everyone had
a crack. I'm sure there were some very good applicants.
So what put you in the position to go? You
know what, I'm putting my hand up for this.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Well, I thought deeply about it before throwing my hat
in the ring, and I guess there are a few
motivations that really stood out. So the fact that netball
is the largest sport for women and girls in the country,
the fact that our Silver Firms are one of the
most beloved sports teams that we have, and then knowing
how incredible the passion and heart is for neckball at
(03:33):
a community level right across the country. Those sort of things,
you know, from a scale of passion and a purpose
point of view, they really stood out as being quite
unique and special for me, and as a result of that,
I decided to throw my hat in the ring and
just feel enormously privileged to now be announced as the
(03:54):
new chief Executive.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
I would say the first point of order for you,
Jenna Wooten, and I don't mean to tell you your
job that'd be down White route is looking at where
the A n ZD Premiership is going and what is
happening in that space slily has been talk of privatization,
a lot of players who want to disappear and player
in Australia, what's your master plan, what is your scope?
(04:17):
What do you look at for the A and Z
Premiership in the not too distant future.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Well, the domestic competition is fundamental to the sport and
there's a range of reasons for that, so you know,
importantly it provides an invaluable pathway for our athletes, it
connects netballs with communities right across the country, and it
also gives fans something to get really amped up and
excited about. So, you know, I think the A and

Z Premiership has been phenomenal this year. I've been on
the edge of my couch watching many of the games.
I think the caliber of our athletes is just incredible.
And you know, there's a lot of thought going on
about what is the competition model need to look like
in the future, and I'm sure that is something that
the board and I will be having a number of
(05:06):
discussions about.

When I int role on August twelve.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Do you come in with a specific idea around where
you think the A and Z Premiership is best placed.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Look, I think the thing I'm really mindful of is
coming into the role and making sure that I'm doing
a lot of listening. The network community is vast. We
have some incredible commercial and funding partners. I want to
make sure that first and foremost, I'm actually connecting with
all of those groups, from our life members, to our staff,
(05:40):
to our partners, to our zones and deeply understanding their
views and perspectives. And I think through understanding those news
and perspectives, we're going to be far better place to
work through.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
What we need to do into the future.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
Neble New Zealand got quite a job to do, i'd
suggest on rebuilding trust with all of its stakeholders, the associations,
the fans, the like as well. Are you going to
be active in getting out and actually getting a feed
on the ground and talking to people because that's a
huge part of rebuilding the trust in Netborn New Zealand.
(06:13):
And Am I right in saying that that? Is it
a low EBB right now?
Speaker 5 (06:17):
Well?
Speaker 2 (06:17):
I think Jane Patterson's been doing a phenomenal job over
the last few months before she's been in here as
interim chief executive, and rebuilding trust has been at the
absolute top of her agenda.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
And you know, the.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Reality is trust is built through actions, not words, right.
So to your point, the thing I'm most excited about
with this role is I am going to be out
and about.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
I am going to be on the side of netbook courts.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
I am going to be in clubrooms connecting with our
netties and understanding their views and perspectives. You know that
is absolutely critical and it's something that I'm hugely looking
forward to.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
What about the relationship with Dan Nolan Tolua because she
was part of the huge probable issues that faced Netball
New Zealand are late last year. Have you met with
her yet? Have you got any ideas about what needs
to happen to cement that relationship because the head coach
and the CEO, you guys have got to be reading
from the singing from the same song, see don't you?
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Absolutely And as at today, I haven't had the privilege
of meeting with Dame Nolean, but I am really looking
forward to doing so when I start in the role,
and between now and then I will be watching with
enormous interest from home as she and the rest of
our coaching team and our incredible silver Ferns head off
(07:36):
to Glasgow. You know, I think it's incredibly it's an
incredibly exciting time for Netball New Zealand and I know
Dame Nolean and our silver Ferns are going to do
this country enormously proud.

Over at the Commonwealth Game.

Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sportsfix with.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Jason Vain and Darcy Waldergrave, the two of the most
revered and respected titles in world sport are pretty old school.
They're very basic, they're very primal. They talk to us
as human beings. I talk of the Olympic one hundred
meter sprint champion, and I speak of the World heavyweight
(08:16):
boxing champ. Why are they so important to us? They
speak to the old selves of a human race. It's
about fight or flight. Now, if you're fast enough to
get away from your regressor, you can and you do.
If you're not, you stand there and you punch them
in the face. So this is very old school. This
is in the heart, this is in our DNA to
(08:38):
fight or flight, which is why I think one hundred
meters of sprint and heavyweight boxing are two of the
most important sports we have. And it's to boxing. I'd
like to go, and it's one of my favorite sports.
I love the fighting in the squared circle. This is
not heavyweight fighting, but this is close. It was announced
today that David Nieker is going to be squaring off
(09:00):
in an IBF Cruiserweight world title eliminator fight with the
Kiwi Ossie Floyd Misson that is an Awkrod on August
the eighth. Nika has ranked five. Massa is ranked number six.
You remember David Nika had a last minute crack at
winning the title against the extraordinary gaiop Attire. That was
(09:24):
January twenty twenty five. He had no preparation. He got
well beaten and I'd suggest that would have been a
bit of a blow to his ego. Now he's stepping
back up to where he believes he belongs. I got
a lot of faith in David Nika and what he
can bring. He's got a lot of bravery. Who stepped
(09:45):
into the ring with an assassin like Giopattire on pretty
much no notice whatsoever. This is a guy who's got
a wonderful career. He won gold in twenty fourteen and
twenty eighteen at the Common Games, and himself and Sia
hid Any they worthy New Zealand of flag bearers at
the twenty twenty Summer Olympics. There was of course controversy
(10:08):
that particular event, after the Moroccan boxer Eunice bar Leia
attempted to bite Nika's ear. It's another story for another day.
But he is back and he's heading toward the top again.
He's bringing his fight home. He's bringing it to the
North shore of Auckland, and I, for one, will be
there all over it like a rash fight or flight.

start with ch Chanell Harris ta Vita. Nice little segway there, Dorees.
She would have noticed has resigned re signed with the

Chanelle Harris de Vita has resigned with the Warriors for
another year now. This was pretty important because as we know,

Luke metcalf is leaving the club Tanner Boyd. We don't
know how long he's going to be out for. So
a half of the of the skill, of the ability,
of the experience of Shanella Harris Tavita is a fairly
important cog to have locked in for twenty twenty seven,
isn't it.

Yeah? I like to call him because that's what to now.
Harris Tavita looks like it's not although he thinks I'm
swearing at him, so maybe I don't do that. It's huge.
I'm surprised that the length of the contract is very short,
but I'm presuming that they need an experienced guy like
that to help the team out, to help a guy
like maybe Jet Cleary developing Enhansen and the rest of

it as well. But I really thought they'd give him
longer than that, didn't you?

Yeah?

And I wondered whose decision that was, And I kind
of wonder whether it might be Shanelle Harris Tavita's decision,
because wasn't that long ago he stepped away from the
game of rugby league altogether, didn't he, And and sort
of went off on a bit of a walk about
to find himself and to you know, and to work
out what it was that he wanted to do with
his life. He decided that rugby league was it, so
he came back to the to the to the code.
(12:01):
But yeah, maybe he just wants to keep his options open.
I guess now what it does is I mean, he
was always here this year anyway. But now to my
he Martin's been named to face the Dragons on the weekend.
But how long do you think it'll be before we
see a look Metcalf Chanella Harris Tavita Half's combo for
the Warriors this year.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Shortly, I'd be stunned if they didn't utilize the talents.
And also, well, when you consider how much they paid
for him, he's no point in letting him rot on
the sideline. So if he's fit, ready to go, and
he's got over his issue, great, get him in. Because
he's a game breaker. We know that. I just don't
think you can be sulky about this situation. He's there,
(12:41):
so use him, no problem. And by the way, Chanell
Harris Tavita that did that back in the day. That's
a lot of internal strength. That's listening to your internal dialogue,
agreeing with it and making a massive decision that could
have destroyed his career. But he needed it. He needed
that space. Whereas if we tried that on within half
(13:01):
an hour, they would have employed another broadcaster. So we
can't be doing that right.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
I think half an hour might be optimistic as well.
The moment we let them know that we were going
on little bit of a walk about, I mean it
does you know you look ahead? And yes, Luke Meetcaff
is leaving the club at the end of this season,
but with Chanelle Harris Tavita re signed, I'm not sure
what Demardi Martin's status says, but I wouldn't be surprised
if they're looking to lock him up as well. Tanner
Boyd is with the club for a while and Jet Cleary,

so you know there's some fairly handy halves there in
twenty twenty seven as well.

Yes, but at the moment I think we fully focus
on what's happening this year. Next year means nothing. It's
about now. It's the here and now, win now. That's
why I think they need to keep Metcalfe back in
with no disrespect the tour to the current players. But
what he does he winness titles now.

Now we'll speaking of winning titles now or on Saturday
nights a League Grand Final. I know there's a lot
of buzz around about this and the nine. I'm coming
up on Saturday morning to to to soak it all

on Saturday nights. Tickets have all gone, they went within

moments of being put on sale, even the extra ones
set to be quite the occasion of Steve Coriker and
his band of merry men look to make history on
Saturday Night UK.

It will be history made. And Piney, I know you're
coming up and you know you'll be doing your show
from up here, but you also you've got the commentating
duties of course for Sky, which are very very important.
What I'm asking you now is how well is your
speech writing going for your almost becoming legendary opening speeches
as you walk dramatically but slowly toward the camera night. Honestly,

they've got a lot of traction and they're very very
well done. I'm hugely impressed. Now. I know you don't
use an auto Q either. This is brilliant. So how's
the writing going? Anyway?

I was going to say that the reason for the
slow walker is because if I went any faster, I'd
run the risk of pulling a muscle. And the last
thing they need is a commentator pulling a muscle out
there in ever to carry him off in some sort
of you know, trunk elongated stretcher. So yeah, look well,
I mean, the great thing about it is that it's
an occasion and everybody who goes along their Saturday Night
is a part of it as a player, as a coach,

as a member of Auckland FC. As a fan in
any capacity is going to have a night to remember,
I hope, And yeah, I'm glad they resisted the temptation
of moving it to Eden Park. I don't think that
was ever on the cards, but I'm glad they haven't
and we're going to have a jam packed rectangular stadium
there on on Saturday.

Piney. I'm quite surprised because the A League, who are
in charge of versus the ticketing and where it actually is,
they threw their weight around a couple of weeks ago,
completely overcharged, decimated the stands, there was no one there,
But you still think they're the ones who look to
make the most out of that. They must have considered
maybe going to Eden Park at some stage, surely.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
I'm sure they did. I'm sure they had the conversation
and I'm sure as far as Nick Becker, CEO of
Auckland f C was concerned, it was a very short
conversation from his site. No, but you're right, apl they
rule the roost and if they look across town and
see twenty thousand more seats which I'm sure would have
been snapped up, or it's certainly a large seat of them. Yes,
that's more money in their coffers, but they've obviously been
(16:11):
convinced that, you know, Mount Smart is where the game
should be played. I think for the atmosphere, it's a
great decision. And you know, from Auckland, de f c's
point of view, home advantage just called that for a reason.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
They've never played at Eden Park.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
They would know where the changing rooms were, they don't
know the way to the ground. I know these are
small things, but yeah, I feel like the home advantage
does count and they'll get exactly that at Mount Smart.

And as you said, rectangular stadium they went to Eden back,
they'll probably get lost on the way to the sheds,
a lot of grass between the game and the sheds themselves.
I'm pumped for this and I've explained to you before
on the Sports FIXI also on Sports Talk. This is
stunning the last couple of weeks because I have ordered
my watching over the weekend based on live football first,
(16:57):
and I've pre recorded the things I love like you know,
RUGB and so on and so forth, and watched them secondary.
So this is a massive seed change. They have had
a palpable effect on Auckland and on the people out there.
I don't think enough can be said about that. I
just want to know what happens next to you, because
they've got to keep going up, surely as far as
engagement and what they do with the fans, because they've

done that so well. They've really made a mark here
in Auckham. Results plainly key, but they're trying everything else.
So what's next.

Yeah, Well, they've been innovative, haven't they in the first
couple of years and it's paid off. Yeah, some of
the crabs this year weren't quite what they would have hoped,
but yeah, the way that the Grand Final has sold
out so quickly as a testament to the to the
job that the that the club have done. And when
we're getting you know, the like, you know, sort of
discretionary fans, I guess you'd call them fans for who
football isn't their number one sport, you know, looking and
saying okay, well I can't watch that live because I'm

going to be watching the football. Then, you know, I
think that's a that's a massive tick in the box.

They change their name, sorry of their place and not
go media amount Smart Stadium and that is changed the
name to the Port like the whole stadium, the whole stadium.
Everyone's in the port this time round.

Look, I think the thing I'm really mindful of is
coming into the role and making sure that I'm doing
a lot of listening. The network community is vast. We
have some incredible commercial and funding partners. I want to
make sure that first and foremost, I'm actually connecting with
all of those groups, from our life members, to our staff,
(05:40):
to our partners, to our zones and deeply understanding their
views and perspectives. And I think through understanding those news
and perspectives, we're going to be far better place to
work through.

What we need to do into the future.

Neble New Zealand got quite a job to do, i'd
suggest on rebuilding trust with all of its stakeholders, the associations,
the fans, the like as well. Are you going to
be active in getting out and actually getting a feed
on the ground and talking to people because that's a
huge part of rebuilding the trust in Netborn New Zealand.

And Am I right in saying that that? Is it
a low EBB right now?

I think Jane Patterson's been doing a phenomenal job over
the last few months before she's been in here as
interim chief executive, and rebuilding trust has been at the
absolute top of her agenda.

And you know, the.

Reality is trust is built through actions, not words, right.
So to your point, the thing I'm most excited about
with this role is I am going to be out
and about.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
I am going to be on the side of netbook courts.

I am going to be in clubrooms connecting with our
netties and understanding their views and perspectives. You know that
is absolutely critical and it's something that I'm hugely looking
forward to.

What about the relationship with Dan Nolan Tolua because she
was part of the huge probable issues that faced Netball
New Zealand are late last year. Have you met with
her yet? Have you got any ideas about what needs
to happen to cement that relationship because the head coach
and the CEO, you guys have got to be reading
from the singing from the same song, see don't you?

Absolutely And as at today, I haven't had the privilege
of meeting with Dame Nolean, but I am really looking
forward to doing so when I start in the role,
and between now and then I will be watching with
enormous interest from home as she and the rest of
our coaching team and our incredible silver Ferns head off

to Glasgow. You know, I think it's incredibly it's an
incredibly exciting time for Netball New Zealand and I know
Dame Nolean and our silver Ferns are going to do
this country enormously proud.

Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sportsfix with.

Jason Vain and Darcy Waldergrave, the two of the most
revered and respected titles in world sport are pretty old school.
They're very basic, they're very primal. They talk to us
as human beings. I talk of the Olympic one hundred
meter sprint champion, and I speak of the World heavyweight

boxing champ. Why are they so important to us? They
speak to the old selves of a human race. It's
about fight or flight. Now, if you're fast enough to
get away from your regressor, you can and you do.
If you're not, you stand there and you punch them
in the face. So this is very old school. This
is in the heart, this is in our DNA to

fight or flight, which is why I think one hundred
meters of sprint and heavyweight boxing are two of the
most important sports we have. And it's to boxing. I'd
like to go, and it's one of my favorite sports.
I love the fighting in the squared circle. This is
not heavyweight fighting, but this is close. It was announced
today that David Nieker is going to be squaring off

in an IBF Cruiserweight world title eliminator fight with the
Kiwi Ossie Floyd Misson that is an Awkrod on August
the eighth. Nika has ranked five. Massa is ranked number six.
You remember David Nika had a last minute crack at
winning the title against the extraordinary gaiop Attire. That was

January twenty twenty five. He had no preparation. He got
well beaten and I'd suggest that would have been a
bit of a blow to his ego. Now he's stepping
back up to where he believes he belongs. I got
a lot of faith in David Nika and what he
can bring. He's got a lot of bravery. Who stepped

into the ring with an assassin like Giopattire on pretty
much no notice whatsoever. This is a guy who's got
a wonderful career. He won gold in twenty fourteen and
twenty eighteen at the Common Games, and himself and Sia
hid Any they worthy New Zealand of flag bearers at
the twenty twenty Summer Olympics. There was of course controversy

that particular event, after the Moroccan boxer Eunice bar Leia
attempted to bite Nika's ear. It's another story for another day.
But he is back and he's heading toward the top again.
He's bringing his fight home. He's bringing it to the
North shore of Auckland, and I, for one, will be
there all over it like a rash fight or flight.

Chanelle Harris de Vita has resigned with the Warriors for
another year now. This was pretty important because as we know,

Luke metcalf is leaving the club Tanner Boyd. We don't
know how long he's going to be out for. So
a half of the of the skill, of the ability,
of the experience of Shanella Harris Tavita is a fairly
important cog to have locked in for twenty twenty seven,
isn't it.

Harris Tavita looks like it's not although he thinks I'm
swearing at him, so maybe I don't do that. It's huge.
I'm surprised that the length of the contract is very short,
but I'm presuming that they need an experienced guy like
that to help the team out, to help a guy
like maybe Jet Cleary developing Enhansen and the rest of

it as well. But I really thought they'd give him
longer than that, didn't you?

And I wondered whose decision that was, And I kind
of wonder whether it might be Shanelle Harris Tavita's decision,
because wasn't that long ago he stepped away from the
game of rugby league altogether, didn't he, And and sort
of went off on a bit of a walk about
to find himself and to you know, and to work
out what it was that he wanted to do with
his life. He decided that rugby league was it, so
he came back to the to the to the code.

But yeah, maybe he just wants to keep his options open.
I guess now what it does is I mean, he
was always here this year anyway. But now to my
he Martin's been named to face the Dragons on the weekend.
But how long do you think it'll be before we
see a look Metcalf Chanella Harris Tavita Half's combo for
the Warriors this year.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Shortly, I'd be stunned if they didn't utilize the talents.
And also, well, when you consider how much they paid
for him, he's no point in letting him rot on
the sideline. So if he's fit, ready to go, and
he's got over his issue, great, get him in. Because
he's a game breaker. We know that. I just don't
think you can be sulky about this situation. He's there,

so use him, no problem. And by the way, Chanell
Harris Tavita that did that back in the day. That's
a lot of internal strength. That's listening to your internal dialogue,
agreeing with it and making a massive decision that could
have destroyed his career. But he needed it. He needed
that space. Whereas if we tried that on within half

an hour, they would have employed another broadcaster. So we
can't be doing that right.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
I think half an hour might be optimistic as well.
The moment we let them know that we were going
on little bit of a walk about, I mean it
does you know you look ahead? And yes, Luke Meetcaff
is leaving the club at the end of this season,
but with Chanelle Harris Tavita re signed, I'm not sure
what Demardi Martin's status says, but I wouldn't be surprised
if they're looking to lock him up as well. Tanner
Boyd is with the club for a while and Jet Cleary,

so you know there's some fairly handy halves there in
twenty twenty seven as well.

Yes, but at the moment I think we fully focus
on what's happening this year. Next year means nothing. It's
about now. It's the here and now, win now. That's
why I think they need to keep Metcalfe back in
with no disrespect the tour to the current players. But
what he does he winness titles now.

Now we'll speaking of winning titles now or on Saturday
nights a League Grand Final. I know there's a lot
of buzz around about this and the nine. I'm coming
up on Saturday morning to to to soak it all

duties of course for Sky, which are very very important.
What I'm asking you now is how well is your
speech writing going for your almost becoming legendary opening speeches

they've got a lot of traction and they're very very
well done. I'm hugely impressed. Now. I know you don't
use an auto Q either. This is brilliant. So how's

I was going to say that the reason for the
slow walker is because if I went any faster, I'd
run the risk of pulling a muscle. And the last
thing they need is a commentator pulling a muscle out
there in ever to carry him off in some sort
of you know, trunk elongated stretcher. So yeah, look well,
I mean, the great thing about it is that it's
an occasion and everybody who goes along their Saturday Night
is a part of it as a player, as a coach,

as a member of Auckland FC. As a fan in
any capacity is going to have a night to remember,
I hope, And yeah, I'm glad they resisted the temptation
of moving it to Eden Park. I don't think that
was ever on the cards, but I'm glad they haven't
and we're going to have a jam packed rectangular stadium
there on on Saturday.

Piney. I'm quite surprised because the A League, who are
in charge of versus the ticketing and where it actually is,
they threw their weight around a couple of weeks ago,
completely overcharged, decimated the stands, there was no one there,
But you still think they're the ones who look to
make the most out of that. They must have considered
maybe going to Eden Park at some stage, surely.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
I'm sure they did. I'm sure they had the conversation
and I'm sure as far as Nick Becker, CEO of
Auckland f C was concerned, it was a very short
conversation from his site. No, but you're right, apl they
rule the roost and if they look across town and
see twenty thousand more seats which I'm sure would have
been snapped up, or it's certainly a large seat of them. Yes,
that's more money in their coffers, but they've obviously been

convinced that, you know, Mount Smart is where the game
should be played. I think for the atmosphere, it's a
great decision. And you know, from Auckland, de f c's
point of view, home advantage just called that for a reason.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
They've never played at Eden Park.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
They would know where the changing rooms were, they don't
know the way to the ground. I know these are
small things, but yeah, I feel like the home advantage
does count and they'll get exactly that at Mount Smart.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
And as you said, rectangular stadium they went to Eden back,
they'll probably get lost on the way to the sheds,
a lot of grass between the game and the sheds themselves.
I'm pumped for this and I've explained to you before
on the Sports FIXI also on Sports Talk. This is
stunning the last couple of weeks because I have ordered
my watching over the weekend based on live football first,

and I've pre recorded the things I love like you know,
RUGB and so on and so forth, and watched them secondary.
So this is a massive seed change. They have had
a palpable effect on Auckland and on the people out there.
I don't think enough can be said about that. I
just want to know what happens next to you, because
they've got to keep going up, surely as far as
engagement and what they do with the fans, because they've

done that so well. They've really made a mark here
in Auckham. Results plainly key, but they're trying everything else.
So what's next.

Yeah, Well, they've been innovative, haven't they in the first
couple of years and it's paid off. Yeah, some of
the crabs this year weren't quite what they would have hoped,
but yeah, the way that the Grand Final has sold
out so quickly as a testament to the to the
job that the that the club have done. And when
we're getting you know, the like, you know, sort of
discretionary fans, I guess you'd call them fans for who
football isn't their number one sport, you know, looking and
saying okay, well I can't watch that live because I'm

going to be watching the football. Then, you know, I
think that's a that's a massive tick in the box.

They change their name, sorry of their place and not
go media amount Smart Stadium and that is changed the
name to the Port like the whole stadium, the whole stadium.
