On Sports Fix with D'Arcy Waldegrave and Jason Pine for 22nd January 2026, despite Scott Robertson stepping aside as the All Blacks head coach a week ago, no one has heard what it has been like for the players and how they contributed to the review process. Rob Nichol is the CEO of the New Zealand Rugby Players Association, and he joined D'Arcy to discuss.

D'Arcy shares his thoughts on Hayden Paddon returning to the World Rally Championship this weekend for the first time in 8 years at Monte Carlo.

And D'Arcy and Piney discuss the Black Caps losing to India in the first warm up T20 match last night and whether fans should be worried, as well as the announced dates for the 38th edition of the America's Cup next year.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks EDB. Follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hello there and welcome into the Sports Fix podcast. And
for the first time in twenty twenty six, it's the
band back together the controversial and difficult second album. You
might call it We're here before we go too much
further in association with JJ Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most
trusted home builder, I'm Jason Pine with me old mate.
The bass guitar is no.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
I want to be the drummer because they always the
problem in child, aren't they.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I think if the shoe fits, you should wear the
drumming shoe.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Dars.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
It's good to see you again.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
And it's great to be back on ear with you
again as well, Piney after a decent break. I must say,
I'm I'm very tanned and very happy.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Excellent to hear. Nothing like a slow start to the
sports news. He meantime, the first time you and I've
had the chance to chat about this in a sports
makes sense and well, I know that we're going to
get quite an insight today on sports fix. As far
as the players are concerned, well, the players are hugely.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Involved in this. I mean they went through the whole
process of the review and whatever they said, well, the
end result is that Scott Raser Robertson no longer has
a job. Not just the players, there's other concerned parties too.
But I think the talk to Rob Nickel ahead of
the players association around what part they play, what the
effect has been on them, because I think some of

(01:39):
the would carry We've been a guilt around this if
they thought they were responsible for the removal of Razor.
Others wouldn't.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
So I'm interested to dig and deep with Rob Michel
looking forward to that. Can't wait to hear his torchs
latest and sports news coming your way as well, So
let's get into it. In other news, let's kick things
off with a look at some of the big sports
stories around today. India have beaten New Zealand by forty
eight run to the first of their five match T
twenty World Cup build up series in Nagpur.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
For a single and that is as conclusive as you
can get.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Nbago one mill from the series. Tony Brown has admitted
to some frustration around the vacant All Blacks coaching role.
The former First five has confirmed he intends to honor
his contract as an assistant coach with South Africa rather
than make himself available for inclusion in any New Zealand
coaching group. Timing hasn't worked.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
My commitment to South Africa was four years and I've
always had to plan to honor that commitment.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Meantime, former All Blacks Verse five Limasopowanga is suggesting Highlands
as coach. Jamie Joseph's people's skills make him the best
option to take over the national team.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
He's gone through bad times and also carry teams out
of bad times into good times. And I'm not saying
that allbacks.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Are in a bad time right now.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
They're just not pucking.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
And that's one of his super strengths is to be
able to bring a group together and help them connect.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Us a villion.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
It's Sports Fix with Jason Hyne and Dussie will the Greave.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
We'll join now on The Fixed podcast by Robert Nickel,
chief Executive of the New Zealand Rugby Players Association. Gid A,
Rob Yeah, good Happy New Year, Darcy and Happy New Year,
Happy New Year to yourself. As well. Thanks very much
for joining us. Of course, there's been it's a rather
tumultuous time at dan New Zealand Rugby right now. I
probably don't have to explain that to you, but from

(03:32):
a players Association point of view, the general feeling with
your men around what's actually transpired over the last week
or so.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
Yeah, Look, I mean there's first and foremost real human
element to it. You know, raised a great guy, close
free and many people and a lot of people in
the group obviously, and everyone feels for that. So I
think it goes without saying, you know, everyone feels for
the people involved, and in particular for Razor at the
moment given the situation that's transpired. But the overall drive

(04:05):
over many, many years has been the Black Jersey and
it's performances and any player who goes into those environments
understands that legacy and that expectation. And I guess you know,
New Zealand Rugby have been clear that they've looked at
the performances and things over the last couple of years
and accumulated in a review towards the end of last year,

(04:26):
and the players obligations were to participate in that review.
And open up and be honest and balanced and constructive
throughout that period of time, through that review, and they
were like the feedback we've had from New Zealand Rugbias
that they were really impressed with players, management, coaches and
their desire to contribute constructively in the interest of the
Black Jersey. And the other part to it is when

(04:48):
you embark on processes like that, you know you have
to trust the outcome and you commit to the outcome,
and so all the players will be on a different
perspective in terms of how they feel about the decision.
But the process was robust and they were engaged through
the process, and those that are responsible for making a
decision that made a decision. Is up to the players

(05:09):
to adapt and take a big breath and step up
for the jersey, and that's what they'll focus on doing.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Now, how many of your all black members were canvassed,
were a part of this review.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
Yeah, I'm not going to get too caught up and
drive it into detail and creating creating a few more
headlines and clickbait. But everyone involved in the environment, through
internal reviews and various interviews that are held of the year,
everyone's contributed to the information not just at a point
in time, but on a continuous basis over the last
couple of years. So this is not something that's just

(05:43):
sort of well, this week, we'll do a quick scout
around and get some information and ask the board to
make a decision. It's it's it's it's very thorough and
it's very detailed, and everyone has an opportunity to contribute,
and that's effectively what has happened, players, management, coaches and
even you know, some respected figures on the periphery of
the team. So it's it's it's thorough, it's it's high performance,

(06:06):
and it's thorough.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
A mbernation of the sor some of the senior All
Blacks and some of the junior All Blacks as well.
They've looked right across the whole playing group as far
as seniority is concerned, linked in the Jersey is concerned.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
Yeah, I think you know most it's really interesting when
you look across sports globally at the moment and the
way in which you run these performance environments and you
develop your performance culture. You know, at the heart of
a successful performance culture as everyone understands what the group
are trying to achieve and they take a sense of
responsibility and you know, and they have a real desire
to deliver against that, and they feel engaged and they

(06:41):
feel like they belong in their part of the team.
And you can only do that by allow and everyone
to have a voice in an input in that. And
so lots of leadership structures and processes set up to
try and capture all of that. And the Orbans are
no different. They've had that model for a long time now,
and that models it's been in place, it will continue
to be in place, and so everyone has the channels

(07:02):
through which they can input and that's the way it
should happen, because that's where gold comes. That's where great
ideas come in terms of of on field and off
field performance and culture and leadership and things like that,
and ultimately input into reviews as well.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Rob The timeline is interesting. When this was all revealed,
I found out on the way back from up north
in the car my phone exploded. When did the players
actually find out about this decision?

Speaker 4 (07:29):
The actual decision The leadership group engaged with New Zealand
Araby literally the same day that it was announced, So
you know, I think David kirk as Cheerman in New
Zealand Araby made it really clear when he fronted the
public and the media. This was the decision ultimately taken
by the New Zealand Arabi board based on the advice
they received from their High performance and senior executive team

(07:50):
and those that were involved in the review. So it
wasn't the player's decision. And we saw some headlines saying
sort of sort of alluding to the players had a
disproportionate impact or revolts or anything like that. That's actually
a load of rubbish, complete load of rubbish. The reality
is the players individually and collectively contribute to the information

(08:13):
that's gathered, but they're not responsible for the decision. That's
the responsibility of New Zealand board. They commit to the
process and they are it to the jersey to commit
to that process and engage in it. And the players
and coaches and management would have all provided different feedback
based on their perspective of things and where they fit
within the equation and their individual thoughts, and they might

(08:34):
not be the same as the person.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Next to you. Some of the players fairly are unfairly
being tired with a brush and Marti Savia, for example,
people are pointing and going, well, you started this and
are you going to carry this? That seems to be
grossly unfair. Is there any point in them making a
statement or talking about that or does the team have
to come Well, you can.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
Say it's unfair, and it is unfair, but it's also
blatantly untrue. You know, it's a lot of rubbish. No
individual dictates what happens with this jersey, or the coaching team,
or the playing group or the section around it. It's
absolute yeah, rubbish. I thought David kirked out with that
really well in the stand up media that he did
last week, completely after he refuted it and rejected it,

(09:16):
and that's what it deserves it, you know, I suppose
it's the way it is now. You can chuck out
some of these articles and get a bit of clickbait,
but that's what it was. It's an absolute load of
crap in terms of what I read in that.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
Space dissecting the sporting agenda. It's sportsfix with Jason Vine
and Darcy Waldgrave.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Let's get skidding, Well, that's a term in the rally
world anyway, fair what it means to drive a rally car.
He basically skid through the ice in Hayden Padden's case,
over the weekend, through the sleets, through the mud, through
the rain, through the snow, and this weekend huge for
Hayden Padden. I've told you before and I will not

(09:57):
shut up about this. This is an incredible story. Eight
years after last competing in the World Rally Championship, Hayden Padden,
after a couple of huge years the European Rally Championship,
the first non European to do so, has found himself
back in a seat again with Hayundai. And in a
rally that has teeth, it's got teeth gums, and in

(10:22):
a rally that has more than teeth, Monte Carlo is
astonishingly difficult. It is very treacherous. For Hayden to merely
get through and complete the entire rally would be a
success in itself. It doesn't. In itself. It's not a
rally he enjoys sleet, snow, ice, It's not something that

(10:44):
Hayden Padden is used to. And let's not forget tragedy
struck Monte Carlo with Hayden Padden behind the wheel back
in twenty seventeen. He rolled his car and a spectator
died after a suspected heart attack as a result of
that role. Let's hope that that event doesn't haunt Hayden

(11:06):
Padden as he moves through the stages in Monte Carlo
over the weekend. He's carrying a lot going into this.
He's carrying some grief, he's carrying high expectations, and he's
carrying a chance for him to break back into the
World Rally Championship again.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfex into the
Chamber we go for the first time together. Anyway. In
twenty twenty six, there is a T twenty Cricket World
Cup fast approaching. I can't think of too many better
preparations for a Tea twenty Cricket World Cup in India.
Then playing India five times their conditions, good team. We
can try it a few things, the first one this morning.

(11:45):
Does India winning it by forty eight runs?

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Do we do we worry?

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Are we concerned?

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Well?

Speaker 2 (11:51):
How are we feeling now?

Speaker 3 (11:52):
Not at all? From the sublime to the ridiculous. The
last Tea twenty World Cup we didn't have any warm
ups at all and got dropkicked to touch in the
opening stages. So a lesson learned, which is good. I
don't think so. From a head coach's point of view,
you need to glean information about what the players are doing.
They've been playing white ball cricket okay shorter version, about

(12:14):
how they react under the pressure from the Indian crowd,
from the best Indian side, and what they can do
as far as working out how the pitches and so
on and so forth. So to me, it's a it's
an exercising and collecting information more than anything else. I
think we go through and lose five zip, maybe it's
an issue, but I think what they're getting out of

(12:35):
this is bigger than just the results themselves.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
I totally agree with that. I could not agree more.
I think, you know, if we get to the World
Cup final, the results of a five match here is
against India before it, the results won't matter. But what
groundwork has done during that well, Matt, I remember, you know,
the nineteen ninety two Cricket World Cup to us over here,
and we played England in three fifty over matches before
that tournament and were soundly beaten in all three, and

(13:00):
then all of a sudden, here we are in the
semi finals of a Cricket World Cup. So so what
comes before can be helpful, but it's not.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Necessarily differ is it?

Speaker 4 (13:09):
No?

Speaker 3 (13:09):
And not groundwork? Perfect phrase, we'll sh I had to
come up with that one because that's what it is.
They're getting stuck in and finding out about more about
this team. And also under Rob Walter, now he's going
to react in this situation. He's never been involved at
this level for the T twenty and A World Cup
and if he can't pick up something out of these

(13:30):
five games, we've got the wrong.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Guy absolutely, And there's still some cavalry to arrive. Let's
not forget that there are still players who aren't in
this in this squad for this five match series who
will be there for the World Cup. Fern Allen is
probably the best example of that. Tim Seiffett as well.
Guys who are going to arrive and they have played
a lot of TEA twenty cricket lately, franchised stuff. So yeah,
I don't think we need to need to worry that.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
Top six is looking frightening quite frankly, if they stay
healthy and I taught to Rob Walder yesterda and said
bister like keeping out of the sick bay Mane. He goes, yeah, please,
we've had a bad run of it, but that top
six you stay healthy. There are some absolute assassins in
the order, and some guys to calm the farm if required,
like ratcha Revenger and Daryl Mitchell. Though calling Daryl Mitchell

(14:15):
calm in the full meason at the moment it's probably
a little strange.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
Yeah, it probably is. All right, we wait for game
two over the weekend. Just before we exit the chamber,
news that the thirty eighth America's Cup is going to
be contested July tenth next year through to July eighteen
if needed. That's the that's the you know, the America's
Cup proper wants to get through all the Challenger series,
et cetera. I guess it's good to have to have

(14:39):
a date in Naples as the host city. Dar So,
I guess we know where we're going to be now
and when in May?

Speaker 3 (14:46):
It all starts off, doesn't it when they start flying
around extremely fast and these crazy brittle machines. Did it
spark you when you saw that news? Did a wee
bit of you inside go oh this is exciting? Or
were you really We've got to sell GP coming up
in our own backyard. I'd rather go in that space,

(15:06):
and it's easy enough to kick the America's Cup. I
did get a week spark of excitement because I love
the technology at this event. To me, that's something and
when it gets closer, it really starts engaging people. Or
am I wrong? Is it too far away?

Speaker 4 (15:20):
No?

Speaker 2 (15:20):
That that bit is right. You know you're not wrong
about the America's Cup and the fact it's got legacy,
it's got history, it's got technology, but it is too
far away. What about our January twenty twenty six, and
we're talking about something in July next year. It's like
when they announced yesterday the fixtures for the British and
Irish Lines women's tour. Here, I'm really looking forward to
watching these games, but they're so far off my radar

(15:41):
because they're in a year with a seven at.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
The back of it's a seven. Yeah, So you understand
they want to get ahead of this new cycle by
announcing it, and they have to because teams have got
to be prepared for what's going on. But you get
it and go that's cool, and you put it in
the dari and we worry about that next to.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
You absolutely well, and hopefully we'll still be doing Sports
Fix and chatting in the chamber when it all rolls around.
But for today that's us.
