Few days on obviously from the win at the Oval,
how do you and the squad reflect on what was
a pretty special victory.
Speaker 7 (03:35):
Yeah, it's fantastic.
Speaker 8 (03:36):
I mean, I think the last time we won the
game at the Ovals in ninety nine, So moments like
that always quite special when you were able to do
it create a little bit of history. And the way
the game played out was a proper test cricket. We
like to think it's a It was a nice workout,
bit of a grind. I had to work for the
polls and yeah, it was extremely rewarding.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Obviously there was some as there always are and in
test matches individual standouts. But what as a team do
you think you did better in that game compared to
the match at Lord's.
Speaker 7 (04:05):
I'd say, I mean Laudon's was such an outlier.
Speaker 8 (04:09):
I think it was almost like a lottery because you know,
the wicket was was so different and so it's just
interesting and I guess it didn't help losing that Henry
of going down and then the way he bowled the
second Test. I think that's that's the way he's been
performing internationally for the last few years. It's been amazing
to see. But I guess we just stuck to a
plan for longer and we're a little more ruthless of
(04:30):
the way we have to go about things. And it showed.
You know, Test cricket it's about repeating over and over
and over again, and we luckily did it this time.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
Just talk to me about Matt Henry and what he
was doing in that Test match. Eleven wickets in the end,
especially on that final morning to wrap up the match itself.
But what were you seeing in the field from from
the way that Matt was bowling.
Speaker 7 (04:52):
Oh, he was just so consistent.
Speaker 8 (04:54):
I think obviously keep her up with blunder that that
was that was cool, and him just doing his thing,
always challenging both edges of about stumps and play, still
getting you know, a bit of nip allis, which wasn't
really giving me many other bowlers that stuff. So it
just shows that the Taranties and such a unique skill
(05:15):
set and I think he's so valuable to our team.
I think the stats probably speak for themselves over the
last couple of years.
Speaker 7 (05:22):
He's, you know, an extremely valuable commodity.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
You must be pretty pleased as well. Thirty three and
seventy six at the Oval after I think it was
eight in a duck at Lords, So it's nice to
be back in scoring some runs and troubling the scorers.
Speaker 8 (05:36):
Yeah, it's nice to contribute, I guess obviously after Lords
and not having a best game. Nice to build some
partnerships and you know, especially was part of the partnership
with Henry Nicholson, seeing him back from the other end
and having a best seeing the house for that was
cool and very special.
Speaker 7 (05:52):
And that's something we put ourselves on as a team.
Speaker 8 (05:55):
And we understand individual contributions aren't, you know, necially what
we play for, but we grind together as a group
and those partnerships make it all worth it.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
It was obviously a but a feeling when you're peg
they're working in the second innings and held on to.
I think it was a merely o gay off the
top of my head.
Speaker 7 (06:13):
Yeah, cricket can.

Be a tough game sometimes to kisch you when you're
down and you never really want to drop catches because
you know it's no matter what you know. Whenever this
boys say it's fine, you know you're putting in the work,
and you always step down and you're like, oh, you
know what's happened, but hey, it's okay, this one's stuck,
which I was very, very glad.

I have been a relief, a big so relief what
it did.

Do you know the boys a few coffees, the bowlers
a few coffees or how does that work?
Speaker 7 (06:40):
An they're good dudes.

Obviously that the backdrop has been around Caine, you know,
withdrawing and retiring, which has obviously been a big blow
as a batting lineup. Do you do you feel a
bit of pressure to start chipping away and contributing where
Caine couldn't or is it very much You've got to
focus on what you bring to the team.

Yeah, I mean I think I sort of.

I thought about an answer in different ways, I guess,
and I think Kine is a replace. I think what
he brings to the group in terms of his you
know runs on the field also off the field, and
the way he talked about the team and what he
gives to the team is an incredible and experience of
fifteen sixteen years. You can't really just replace it like that,
but I see it as you know, it's a collective thing.
Speaker 7 (07:24):
You know, Henry.
Speaker 8 (07:25):
Deckle's coming in, who's lit the world up and Plank
at shield stuff, who's volaturely earned his way back. And
I guess as a group, we've just got to contribute
the way we can and bake up for it, because yeah,
it's not one guy who can do it, and we'll
suddenly be trying to continue to try fill the shoes
when we can.

It was great to see Henry Nichols with the ton
at number three at the Oval and as we touched
on those contributions, you know, all matter and you know
a lot of question marks and he's struck a beautiful ton.
Speaker 7 (07:58):
Yeah, I mean that was that was amazing to watch.

I mean, to be honest, not necessarily too sure about
the credits, and I don't really follow it too much,
but the way he saw bit in and out and
obviously out of the team for the last two and
a half years, three years almost and his cricket and
for him to come back with such a hasten to
roar and like I say, earn his place back and
go about it in his way, you know, playing the

way he wants to and addictating terms that way was
it was amazing to.

Watch and like I said, it was it was a
pleasure being in the other end.

fire in the final game against England. Indeed, they'll know
if they are still a retance or they're out of
the tournament completely. Comes Sunday morning by first ball, with
the West Indies able to qualify with a victory over
win This Island before then. But if they don't advance
and miss out on the semi finals and their title defense,
in my mind, should create some serious questions over the

future of the side and where it's going, especially with
Divine to Who and baits all out the door at
the end of this tournament. Women's crickets on a worldwide
scale has been growing for more than a decade now,
but the scenes I get is New Zealand has been
left behind. Apart from that T twenty World Cup triumph,
which was one out of the box, we have probably
our greatest ever player and merely Kurr in the signe currently,

but she as at risk of being a one woman band.
There are players capable of cameos, but consistency outside of
Kerr is seriously lacking, and until that happens, winning another
T twenty World Cup or a fifty over World Cup
will be nothing but a pipe dream. The domestic game
at New Zealand's level is poor. I believe for both
the men's and women's competitions there are two too many

teams at a T twenty level, and it's a case
I believe that iron needs to sharpen iron. The best
need to be playing better players to make themselves better.
Maybe the NZ twenty might help that, maybe it won't,
but until that happens, we need more than merely Curve
flying the flag for New Zealand, because more and more
it looks like that T twenty World Cup victory looks
like a perfect storm rather than the beginning of something special.

about the Football World Cup and you're right in Vancouver
where Canada kind of blew their chants a little bit
this morning to top the group. I mean, they're through,
but it's not the best outcome that Canada probably would
have been hoping for. What did you make of that?

Yeah, absolutely not, Elliot. I was at the press conference
yesterday when Jesse Marsh, the Canadian coach, was talking about it,
and he was asked what are the main benefits of
finishing top of the group, and he said straight away
the main benefit is staying here in Canada because the
way the draw has been worked out, the top of
that group stays in Vancouver for their round of thirty
(10:57):
two match, and so they were very keen having played
a couple of games in Vancouver and one in Toronto
during group play to stay on home soil, and rightly so,
I think you know, you're always gonna. I guess get
that support. Aren't you from your home fans and have
your home comforts if you stay in your country. But yeah,
the loss to Switzerland. And to be fair, I thought
(11:17):
Switzerland deserved the win. I thought I was at that
game today at BC Place, I thought they deserved the win.
Canada got a late goal and kind of got their
footback and the door. But I never really at any
stage thought they were going to win the game. So
now it's Switzerland instead who stay in Vancouver. They stretched
their legs out and enjoy the hospitality of the wonderful
people here in Canada. Instead go to la But the

other part of this elliot is that I was fully
expecting South Korea to finish second in Group AY, and
all of a sudden Canada are playing South Africa. It's
just this World Cup is already throwing up surprise as left,
right and center it is.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
And it was a wonderful win for South Africa, ranked
sixtieth in the world Korea's twenty fifth. They bagged the
goal and Bafana Bafana sent Africa or South Africa certainly
into delirium. What a result for them and getting through
to the knockout stage, Canada lose their home support. As
you said, you go to California, it's essentially neutral territory

for that game, So that's going to be fascinating to
see how that all plays out. And then on the
flip side of things that we head into a pretty
big day again tomorrow at the World Cup with the
final round, and of course the All White's coming up
on Saturday as well. So these games are just ratcheting
up now and the tension is going to be at
an all time high.

Absolutely right. And I think that South Africa game today,
South Africa south Korea was a perfect example of that.
You know, things can change so quickly. I'll watched South
Africa play Mexico in the opening game of the entire tournament,
and I thought, South Africa play your three games and
get out of here, because they were very, very poor
in that first game. But all of a sudden they're
now not just sticking through as one of the third

place sides, second in that group. So then you look
at tomorrow and you say, Okay, what's going to happen
in the group that Australia are in. They've got Paraguay
to play tomorrow. The US already top that group. Australia
could find themselves, you know, in a third place position
and precarious. The Netherlands play tomorrow against t Nizzia. Germany
play Equid or Ivory Coast could make the second round

for the first time. Honestly, Elliott, these games are coming
thick and fast. And say what you like about the
forty eighteen format, but actually it's provided us with quite
a bit of drama, a lot of excitement and many
many storylines.

Before we leave the foot Wall World Cup. What do
you do if you're a team like Scotland, You're currently
in that third ranking, but you're to seventh. You were
sixth after they lost to Brazil this morning, they've already
moved down to seventh. What do they do that is
wade around for a few days? Do they go off
to Disneylands? How do they fill in the days?
Speaker 4 (13:49):
I think they know they're going home. I watched their
I watch their post match after Brazil, the lost to
Brazil today and they were the post match interviews of
a team that knows they're not going to make it.
You know, three points and a negative three goal difference
isn't going to be enough. To get you through. They
do stay. Maybe they stay on the you know, on
the on the FIFA you know junket, the FIFA gravy train.

If I'm Scotland, I'm probably just enjoying bits and pieces
of off what is left here before they hop on
that plane. But yeah, they really. I think Scotland blew
it by not beating Haiti buy More in their first game.
They were well beaten by Brazil today, so I think
I think Scotland are probably on the plane home on Sunday,

Let's pivot to crickets and the black Caps England Final
Test starts tonight. We've heard from Russian Revendra around that
there's a bit of an interesting conundrum though for the
black Caps. Isn't there pinny around whether they go with
pace and bled Tickner or spin and Mitchell Santon And
now that they're resting Kyle Jamison, I guess, first and foremost,
resting Kyle Jamison for a decisive test in a series.

I get why you want this bloke to be on
the park though, but I kind of think it's the
right decision because you think about how many injuries he's
had through his career. You'd hate to see him break
down again, So I can understand that, but boy, it's
just going to be a harder ask without Kyle Jameson
to win this match and then for win the series.

Yeah, and this was new information. Wasn't an Elliott, This
wasn't headlined before, was it, Which kind of makes me
wonder why they didn't tell us this before. I mean,
not that they're beholden to they don't have to, but
I just wonder whether they could have said rather than
sort of drop this on everybody and make it a
bit of a story. Say, Okay, Kyle Jamison, due to
oad management, is available for the first Test at Lord's

the second Test at the Oval, but he won't play
at treen Bridge, you know. But anyway, be that as
it may, he won't play. You look back at the
first two Test matches. New Zealand didn't bowl a single
over a spin in the first Test, and right and
revender of bowld two overs in the first innings and
two overs in the second at the Oval, I can't
imagine that trent Bridge will be markedly different from the
two Test wickets in the first two Tests. So I

kind of feel as though it's Blair Tickner, what do
you think.

I'm with you as well. I think with Tickner and
there you get that pace option. Obviously, personally I think
it's a drop from Kyle Jamison, but I think you
can probably cover the spin with revenge should you want,
or Glenn Phillips. You have those two options there, but
sat does give you that that variation, and we saw
what he can do. You know, he'd been written off

as a read bull ball if you think back to
the Indian Series into twenty twenty four. In the way
that he played there, it seems as though when he
gets the ball in Test matches he finds wickets. So
I kind of agree, but also I'm like, maybe you
do go the spinner and backs out and to get
you a victory. But regardless, it's gonna be fascinating to
see how that plays out and what eleven the black

Caps go with and hopefully they can wrap up just

And that's something we put ourselves on as a team.

And we understand individual contributions aren't, you know, necially what
we play for, but we grind together as a group
and those partnerships make it all worth it.

Obviously that the backdrop has been around Caine, you know,
withdrawing and retiring, which has obviously been a big blow
as a batting lineup. Do you do you feel a
bit of pressure to start chipping away and contributing where
Caine couldn't or is it very much You've got to
focus on what you bring to the team.

Yeah, I mean I think I sort of.

I thought about an answer in different ways, I guess,
and I think Kine is a replace. I think what
he brings to the group in terms of his you
know runs on the field also off the field, and
the way he talked about the team and what he
gives to the team is an incredible and experience of
fifteen sixteen years. You can't really just replace it like that,
but I see it as you know, it's a collective thing.

You know, Henry.

Deckle's coming in, who's lit the world up and Plank
at shield stuff, who's volaturely earned his way back. And
I guess as a group, we've just got to contribute
the way we can and bake up for it, because yeah,
it's not one guy who can do it, and we'll
suddenly be trying to continue to try fill the shoes
when we can.

It was great to see Henry Nichols with the ton
at number three at the Oval and as we touched
on those contributions, you know, all matter and you know
a lot of question marks and he's struck a beautiful ton.

Yeah, I mean that was that was amazing to watch.

I mean, to be honest, not necessarily too sure about
the credits, and I don't really follow it too much,
but the way he saw bit in and out and
obviously out of the team for the last two and
a half years, three years almost and his cricket and
for him to come back with such a hasten to
roar and like I say, earn his place back and
go about it in his way, you know, playing the

but she as at risk of being a one woman band.
There are players capable of cameos, but consistency outside of
Kerr is seriously lacking, and until that happens, winning another
T twenty World Cup or a fifty over World Cup
will be nothing but a pipe dream. The domestic game
at New Zealand's level is poor. I believe for both
the men's and women's competitions there are two too many

teams at a T twenty level, and it's a case
I believe that iron needs to sharpen iron. The best
need to be playing better players to make themselves better.
Maybe the NZ twenty might help that, maybe it won't,
but until that happens, we need more than merely Curve
flying the flag for New Zealand, because more and more
it looks like that T twenty World Cup victory looks
like a perfect storm rather than the beginning of something special.

about the Football World Cup and you're right in Vancouver
where Canada kind of blew their chants a little bit
this morning to top the group. I mean, they're through,
but it's not the best outcome that Canada probably would
have been hoping for. What did you make of that?
Speaker 4 (10:36):
Yeah, absolutely not, Elliot. I was at the press conference
yesterday when Jesse Marsh, the Canadian coach, was talking about it,
and he was asked what are the main benefits of
finishing top of the group, and he said straight away
the main benefit is staying here in Canada because the
way the draw has been worked out, the top of
that group stays in Vancouver for their round of thirty
(10:57):
two match, and so they were very keen having played
a couple of games in Vancouver and one in Toronto
during group play to stay on home soil, and rightly so,
I think you know, you're always gonna. I guess get
that support. Aren't you from your home fans and have
your home comforts if you stay in your country. But yeah,
the loss to Switzerland. And to be fair, I thought
(11:17):
Switzerland deserved the win. I thought I was at that
game today at BC Place, I thought they deserved the win.
Canada got a late goal and kind of got their
footback and the door. But I never really at any
stage thought they were going to win the game. So
now it's Switzerland instead who stay in Vancouver. They stretched
their legs out and enjoy the hospitality of the wonderful
people here in Canada. Instead go to la But the

other part of this elliot is that I was fully
expecting South Korea to finish second in Group AY, and
all of a sudden Canada are playing South Africa. It's
just this World Cup is already throwing up surprise as left,
right and center it is.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
And it was a wonderful win for South Africa, ranked
sixtieth in the world Korea's twenty fifth. They bagged the
goal and Bafana Bafana sent Africa or South Africa certainly
into delirium. What a result for them and getting through
to the knockout stage, Canada lose their home support. As
you said, you go to California, it's essentially neutral territory
(12:16):
for that game, So that's going to be fascinating to
see how that all plays out. And then on the
flip side of things that we head into a pretty
big day again tomorrow at the World Cup with the
final round, and of course the All White's coming up
on Saturday as well. So these games are just ratcheting
up now and the tension is going to be at
an all time high.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Absolutely right. And I think that South Africa game today,
South Africa south Korea was a perfect example of that.
You know, things can change so quickly. I'll watched South
Africa play Mexico in the opening game of the entire tournament,
and I thought, South Africa play your three games and
get out of here, because they were very, very poor
in that first game. But all of a sudden they're
now not just sticking through as one of the third
(12:58):
place sides, second in that group. So then you look
at tomorrow and you say, Okay, what's going to happen
in the group that Australia are in. They've got Paraguay
to play tomorrow. The US already top that group. Australia
could find themselves, you know, in a third place position
and precarious. The Netherlands play tomorrow against t Nizzia. Germany
play Equid or Ivory Coast could make the second round
(13:20):
for the first time. Honestly, Elliott, these games are coming
thick and fast. And say what you like about the
forty eighteen format, but actually it's provided us with quite
a bit of drama, a lot of excitement and many
many storylines.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Before we leave the foot Wall World Cup. What do
you do if you're a team like Scotland, You're currently
in that third ranking, but you're to seventh. You were
sixth after they lost to Brazil this morning, they've already
moved down to seventh. What do they do that is
wade around for a few days? Do they go off
to Disneylands? How do they fill in the days?
Speaker 4 (13:49):
I think they know they're going home. I watched their
I watch their post match after Brazil, the lost to
Brazil today and they were the post match interviews of
a team that knows they're not going to make it.
You know, three points and a negative three goal difference
isn't going to be enough. To get you through. They
do stay. Maybe they stay on the you know, on
the on the FIFA you know junket, the FIFA gravy train.

If I'm Scotland, I'm probably just enjoying bits and pieces
of off what is left here before they hop on
that plane. But yeah, they really. I think Scotland blew
it by not beating Haiti buy More in their first game.
They were well beaten by Brazil today, so I think
I think Scotland are probably on the plane home on Sunday,

if not before.

Let's pivot to crickets and the black Caps England Final
Test starts tonight. We've heard from Russian Revendra around that
there's a bit of an interesting conundrum though for the
black Caps. Isn't there pinny around whether they go with
pace and bled Tickner or spin and Mitchell Santon And
now that they're resting Kyle Jamison, I guess, first and foremost,
resting Kyle Jamison for a decisive test in a series.

I get why you want this bloke to be on
the park though, but I kind of think it's the
right decision because you think about how many injuries he's
had through his career. You'd hate to see him break
down again, So I can understand that, but boy, it's
just going to be a harder ask without Kyle Jameson
to win this match and then for win the series.

Yeah, and this was new information. Wasn't an Elliott, This
wasn't headlined before, was it, Which kind of makes me
wonder why they didn't tell us this before. I mean,
not that they're beholden to they don't have to, but
I just wonder whether they could have said rather than
sort of drop this on everybody and make it a
bit of a story. Say, Okay, Kyle Jamison, due to
oad management, is available for the first Test at Lord's

the second Test at the Oval, but he won't play
at treen Bridge, you know. But anyway, be that as
it may, he won't play. You look back at the
first two Test matches. New Zealand didn't bowl a single
over a spin in the first Test, and right and
revender of bowld two overs in the first innings and
two overs in the second at the Oval, I can't
imagine that trent Bridge will be markedly different from the
two Test wickets in the first two Tests. So I

kind of feel as though it's Blair Tickner, what do
you think.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
I'm with you as well. I think with Tickner and
there you get that pace option. Obviously, personally I think
it's a drop from Kyle Jamison, but I think you
can probably cover the spin with revenge should you want,
or Glenn Phillips. You have those two options there, but
sat does give you that that variation, and we saw
what he can do. You know, he'd been written off

as a read bull ball if you think back to
the Indian Series into twenty twenty four. In the way
that he played there, it seems as though when he
gets the ball in Test matches he finds wickets. So
I kind of agree, but also I'm like, maybe you
do go the spinner and backs out and to get
you a victory. But regardless, it's gonna be fascinating to
see how that plays out and what eleven the black

Caps go with and hopefully they can wrap up just
their fourth ever Test Series victory in England. That does
