not going to be around for three to five months,
which means Dave Rennie has got to pick a new captain.
My question to you, being a captain, how does he
process through this. We'll talk about who it should be later,
but he's got an announcer captain for the nation's championship

for the South African Tour. Does this captain carry on
next year ahead of the World Cup or can it
be a one off just this year only decision because
that brings I'm presuming that the inconsistency that may be
some trouble for the team as well.

Where do you think he should go?
Speaker 6 (04:02):
Well, I think as a new coach coming in, he
will want to set the team leadership up the way
he wants it, So what was there in the past
is kind of almost irrelevant to him. I mean, he'll
know who the who the respected leaders are. But you know,
he's got to pick his team first, and part of
that is considering the leadership group, and there was there
(04:22):
was no guarantee that Scott Barrett would I mean, he
would have been a leader within the group, but there
was no guarantee that he would have been necessarily the captain.
So I think the new coach coming in, it's a
bit of a clean slate really, and he's got to
build that with the relationships and people that he knows
and trusts and thinks will do the job that he
wants them to do.

You work backwards, you said, pick the team, and do
you look at that team?
Speaker 4 (04:45):
You know who you want? And go right?
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Who do these guys respect? Who do they look up to?
And do they work it that way? Or he sees,
actually I know who I want because I've got the relationship.
It's going to go back the other way, if you
know where I'm pointing, Reuben.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
Yeah, well, I think it's a bit of both. I mean,
he may well have a captain and a group of
leaders in mind that were always going to be part
of his team, so that they're probably already penciled in.
Sof look at it from that respect, he has picked
his team, or he will have a very good idea
of who's who's putting him there, and part of that
consideration will be around the type of characters they are,
the sort of leadership and and other attributes that they
(05:19):
bring outside of just their playing ability.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
So this will be an appointment, you'd presume up until
the World cut. They can't chop and change to one
season to another depending on who's available.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
This is what you believe.
Speaker 6 (05:33):
Roumen Well, I think he wants some consistency with it. Yeah,
you know that that can change, like as we've seen
with Scott Barrett being injured. You know, if he was
going to be the captain, then that has to change
because he's not available. So you know, most most coaches
will have a leadership group. They will name the captain,
but if that captain is injured or unavailable for whatever reason,
then they have to have other people who can step
(05:53):
into that role and you know, provide that leadership for
the team. But having an established leadership group means there
is consistency to the way they will approach things.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
You see, that's Dave Rennie's team now, so what it's
news So it's a clean slate, but you'd see other
people have been involved in the group previously. You need
to have some continuity, so the likes of a Cody
Taylor would still be there within that leadership group. Will
they carry on in that manner with experienced players in
(06:22):
that role.
Speaker 6 (06:25):
I think absolutely. I mean, well, it is a clean
slate and he'll change the way that he manages people
and the game plan and on those sorts of things.
There is still a pool of talented leaders that no
doubt will make the team because their quality players, and
you know, he'd be silly not to tap into their
experience and guys like Cody. He's a classic example of
(06:45):
a guy who's been out a long time, he's had
leadership roles, and no doubt he will be one of
the leaders in that group. I mean, he's playing really
good rugby, so you know, you can't replace experience in
some revenues. So he'll definitely be involved. And it just
depends who else he sees. You know, he's got to
find that mix that he has a good relationship with

that he thinks the team will respect and follow, as
well as people that will be adaptable to his style
of play and his style of leadership.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Ruben Thorn, from what you know of Dave Rennie from
what you've observed around how we go about how he
goes about coaching his side. What kind of captain do
you think would vibrate with him perfectly?
Speaker 4 (07:27):
What's he looking for? Climb into his head? If he
can ruben.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
Well, it's a little bit hard. I don't know Dave
Rennie personally, you know, I've only seen him from the
outside and watched the teams that he's you know that
he's dealt with. Obviously, the Chiefs when he had that
successful run a few years ago. Now, they were sort
of no nonsense, particularly up front roll this leaves up,
you know. So he wants hard working people who have
got a real hard edge to them, and I expect
(07:53):
he'll want a leader with that sort of attribute. But
he's also well known for being able to connect with people,
So he wants someone who's a good communicator, someone you know,
who who has a good feel for the team, understands
what the team needs, and has that sort of balance
of empathy and toughness.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Who would you like to see in there? We touched
on Cody Taylor before. It's an outside chance that he
actually might pick up the role. So what you make
of him and I mean, you've worked out his leadership,
and is there anybody else in there that might be
a smoky that says to you, I'm a leader and
I can take us to the promised land of the
World Cup, because that's what it is, isn't it.
Speaker 6 (08:33):
Yeah, Look, it's a little bit tough at the moment,
I think to see other guys who are really putting
their hands up. Addie is a guy because he's an
instant pick, you know, like it just depends where you
want to put him. But he's going to be in
the team. So that's one guy. There are a lot
of other good leaders, but they may not necessarily be
first choice picks depending on which direction Dave Rennie goes in.
(08:58):
So as I said, you know, if I was beating
on it, it would be Ardie. Cody's going to be
in the mix somewhere because he's he's the most experienced
hockey going around. But there's a lot of competition for
the hooking role as well. So yeah, it's going to
be interesting to see, hey, who he picks for the team.
But then yeah, the leaders the leadership, sorry, is going

to be interesting as well.

Dissecting the sporting agenda it's Sportsfix with Jason Vine and Darcy.

Waldgrave playing in front of fifty thousand empty seats. Wow,
that's what the All Whites possibly face. And one of
the warm up matches before the World Cup, they're taking
on England. It is in Florida and only thirty thousand
tickets have been sold for that game. It's versus the
Three Lines, It's versus England. This should be absolutely packed.

Unfortunately it's not going to be because the nature of
the prices and the price gouging that's been done all
over the United States of America for the upcoming FIFA
World Cup. They're all super keen to make some money
out of it. There's a lot of people who just
aren't turning up. They're terrified of going to the United
States of America. They don't want to run into ice,
(10:15):
and they don't want to be detained because of something
dodgy on their social media sites. So in lieu of
people turning up on masks, the people that are turning
up are going to get ripped off. FIFA have climbed
and basically cutting off their nose despite their face, cutting
their own heads off with their unique pricing around tickets
(10:35):
so it's not just the Americans, it's that guy in Fantino.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
And his mob as well. What a lot of the.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Fans are doing is simply not spending any of their
money on something like this event because it's not part
of the World Cup proper. So it's coming back to
bite them and I'm not losing any sleep over that.
I'm actually taking some kind of second twisted shaden freud
out of this. Look. I really hope that some people
do turn up, but quite frankly, the All Whites, and

a lot of them are athletes that been their time
playing sport here in New Zealand.

They're kind of used to playing in front of no crowds.
Is that cruel?
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Is that underwhelming? Is that a low blow?

Well, it is what it is.

It's not great for the All Whites, But when push
comes to shove, they're not playing the three lines. They're
not playing England to deal with the big crowd when
the World Cup proper starts, They're playing England because they
need to play England on the park and England are
one of the best teams at the competition, so who
cares if there's no one there to watch As long
(11:40):
as they get what they want out of the exchange
on the turf.

find they both got centuries and Blundle's still out there.

doing the whole twin screen trek. What's a bit of Origin?
Wants a bit of cricket? And was a not good
I think it was eighty something for four by the
time I slooped off to my nest and how do
we sleep? So same saying. When I work up, I thought, well,
there's a rearguard accent. And you know one thing that

I thought came William said had an opportunity, what five
hundred odd runs to get to ten thousand. He had
an opportunity to slay that Irish team and maybe get
alf the runs. Maybe a massive double CenTra can't help,
but thinking that's where his head was at. So when
he went out, I was like, oh, no, bro, although
he does have another chance, doesn't he he does?

Well, he may or may they might only beat once
in this test. You're you're right, but it's four days, right,
so yeah, yeah, and there's a lot of test cricket
coming up. But yeah, and shortly after Williamson was out,
when Daryl Mitchell nicked out. You're right, there were four
to eighty six or eighty six or four in our language,
so you think he actually, you know, this isn't looking
as promising as we thought they had been sent in.
But I was going to say, it's a very green

Irish bowling attack. That's probably a pun you don't need,
but they are so inexperienced at this level. But yeah,
then Revendra and Blundle together took New Zealand to a
very solid position from a test match like this, It
really is a It is the entree to the main
course of a three Test series against England. So getting

guys like Ravendra and Blundell in the runs as good,
isn't it. I mean Tom Lathan would probably like the
innings again out.

Second ball, Well, you don't shoulder arms like that. And
you can see the look on his face when it

depth exists in sporting teams. So you were keeping eyes
on Origin. I think I was more cricket focused than
Origin focused. But I have caught up on what happened.

greatest comeback in Origin history does well.

I honestly sat there at twenty nil and when you
know what's going to happen here, the Sydney Siders are
going to be so upset they're going to tear the
course stadium down, They're gonna set it on fire. I
thought it was going to be a dead set massacre.
But it's Origin that doesn't happen really does well. It
does from time to time. But New South Wales they

turned around me in and a not on our watch.
And then of course there was the issue with Caln
Ponger and that turned it completely And what a run home.

Tell us about that red card because there's been a
degree of controversy about it. Did you think it was

I thought that they might let it go because it

It reminds me of Warriors defense.

Yeah, and they almost did it too, didn't they until

not than Claria Knox over the conversion, and all of
a sudden they've won it. Cleary good again. I think

put those doubts to bed.

was no guarantee that Scott Barrett would I mean, he
would have been a leader within the group, but there
was no guarantee that he would have been necessarily the captain.
So I think the new coach coming in, it's a
bit of a clean slate really, and he's got to
build that with the relationships and people that he knows
and trusts and thinks will do the job that he
wants them to do.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
You work backwards, you said, pick the team, and do
you look at that team?
Speaker 4 (04:45):
You know who you want? And go right?
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Who do these guys respect? Who do they look up to?
And do they work it that way? Or he sees,
actually I know who I want because I've got the relationship.
It's going to go back the other way, if you
know where I'm pointing, Reuben.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
Yeah, well, I think it's a bit of both. I mean,
he may well have a captain and a group of
leaders in mind that were always going to be part
of his team, so that they're probably already penciled in.
Sof look at it from that respect, he has picked
his team, or he will have a very good idea
of who's who's putting him there, and part of that
consideration will be around the type of characters they are,
the sort of leadership and and other attributes that they
(05:19):
bring outside of just their playing ability.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
So this will be an appointment, you'd presume up until
the World cut. They can't chop and change to one
season to another depending on who's available.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
This is what you believe.
Speaker 6 (05:33):
Roumen Well, I think he wants some consistency with it. Yeah,
you know that that can change, like as we've seen
with Scott Barrett being injured. You know, if he was
going to be the captain, then that has to change
because he's not available. So you know, most most coaches
will have a leadership group. They will name the captain,
but if that captain is injured or unavailable for whatever reason,
then they have to have other people who can step
(05:53):
into that role and you know, provide that leadership for
the team. But having an established leadership group means there
is consistency to the way they will approach things.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
You see, that's Dave Rennie's team now, so what it's
news So it's a clean slate, but you'd see other
people have been involved in the group previously. You need
to have some continuity, so the likes of a Cody
Taylor would still be there within that leadership group. Will
they carry on in that manner with experienced players in
(06:22):
that role.
Speaker 6 (06:25):
I think absolutely. I mean, well, it is a clean
slate and he'll change the way that he manages people
and the game plan and on those sorts of things.
There is still a pool of talented leaders that no
doubt will make the team because their quality players, and
you know, he'd be silly not to tap into their
experience and guys like Cody. He's a classic example of
(06:45):
a guy who's been out a long time, he's had
leadership roles, and no doubt he will be one of
the leaders in that group. I mean, he's playing really
good rugby, so you know, you can't replace experience in
some revenues. So he'll definitely be involved. And it just
depends who else he sees. You know, he's got to
find that mix that he has a good relationship with
(07:06):
that he thinks the team will respect and follow, as
well as people that will be adaptable to his style
of play and his style of leadership.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Ruben Thorn, from what you know of Dave Rennie from
what you've observed around how we go about how he
goes about coaching his side. What kind of captain do
you think would vibrate with him perfectly?
Speaker 4 (07:27):
What's he looking for? Climb into his head? If he
can ruben.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
Well, it's a little bit hard. I don't know Dave
Rennie personally, you know, I've only seen him from the
outside and watched the teams that he's you know that
he's dealt with. Obviously, the Chiefs when he had that
successful run a few years ago. Now, they were sort
of no nonsense, particularly up front roll this leaves up,
you know. So he wants hard working people who have
got a real hard edge to them, and I expect
(07:53):
he'll want a leader with that sort of attribute. But
he's also well known for being able to connect with people,
So he wants someone who's a good communicator, someone you know,
who who has a good feel for the team, understands
what the team needs, and has that sort of balance
of empathy and toughness.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Who would you like to see in there? We touched
on Cody Taylor before. It's an outside chance that he
actually might pick up the role. So what you make
of him and I mean, you've worked out his leadership,
and is there anybody else in there that might be
a smoky that says to you, I'm a leader and
I can take us to the promised land of the
World Cup, because that's what it is, isn't it.
Speaker 6 (08:33):
Yeah, Look, it's a little bit tough at the moment,
I think to see other guys who are really putting
their hands up. Addie is a guy because he's an
instant pick, you know, like it just depends where you
want to put him. But he's going to be in
the team. So that's one guy. There are a lot
of other good leaders, but they may not necessarily be
first choice picks depending on which direction Dave Rennie goes in.
(08:58):
So as I said, you know, if I was beating
on it, it would be Ardie. Cody's going to be
in the mix somewhere because he's he's the most experienced
hockey going around. But there's a lot of competition for
the hooking role as well. So yeah, it's going to
be interesting to see, hey, who he picks for the team.
But then yeah, the leaders the leadership, sorry, is going

to be interesting as well.

Dissecting the sporting agenda it's Sportsfix with Jason Vine and Darcy.

Waldgrave playing in front of fifty thousand empty seats. Wow,
that's what the All Whites possibly face. And one of
the warm up matches before the World Cup, they're taking
on England. It is in Florida and only thirty thousand
tickets have been sold for that game. It's versus the
Three Lines, It's versus England. This should be absolutely packed.

Unfortunately it's not going to be because the nature of
the prices and the price gouging that's been done all
over the United States of America for the upcoming FIFA
World Cup. They're all super keen to make some money
out of it. There's a lot of people who just
aren't turning up. They're terrified of going to the United
States of America. They don't want to run into ice,
(10:15):
and they don't want to be detained because of something
dodgy on their social media sites. So in lieu of
people turning up on masks, the people that are turning
up are going to get ripped off. FIFA have climbed
and basically cutting off their nose despite their face, cutting
their own heads off with their unique pricing around tickets
(10:35):
so it's not just the Americans, it's that guy in Fantino.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
And his mob as well. What a lot of the.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Fans are doing is simply not spending any of their
money on something like this event because it's not part
of the World Cup proper. So it's coming back to
bite them and I'm not losing any sleep over that.
I'm actually taking some kind of second twisted shaden freud
out of this. Look. I really hope that some people
do turn up, but quite frankly, the All Whites, and

a lot of them are athletes that been their time
playing sport here in New Zealand.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
They're kind of used to playing in front of no crowds.
Is that cruel?
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Is that underwhelming? Is that a low blow?
Speaker 4 (11:16):
Well, it is what it is.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
It's not great for the All Whites, But when push
comes to shove, they're not playing the three lines. They're
not playing England to deal with the big crowd when
the World Cup proper starts, They're playing England because they
need to play England on the park and England are
one of the best teams at the competition, so who
cares if there's no one there to watch As long
(11:40):
as they get what they want out of the exchange
on the turf.

That's all that matters.

Wants a bit of cricket? And was a not good

we sleep? So same saying. When I work up, I thought, well,
there's a rearguard accent. And you know one thing that

I thought came William said had an opportunity, what five
hundred odd runs to get to ten thousand. He had
an opportunity to slay that Irish team and maybe get
alf the runs. Maybe a massive double CenTra can't help,
but thinking that's where his head was at. So when
he went out, I was like, oh, no, bro, although
he does have another chance, doesn't he he does?
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Well, he may or may they might only beat once
in this test. You're you're right, but it's four days, right,
so yeah, yeah, and there's a lot of test cricket
coming up. But yeah, and shortly after Williamson was out,
when Daryl Mitchell nicked out. You're right, there were four
to eighty six or eighty six or four in our language,
so you think he actually, you know, this isn't looking
as promising as we thought they had been sent in.
But I was going to say, it's a very green

Irish bowling attack. That's probably a pun you don't need,
but they are so inexperienced at this level. But yeah,
then Revendra and Blundle together took New Zealand to a
very solid position from a test match like this, It
really is a It is the entree to the main
course of a three Test series against England. So getting

guys like Ravendra and Blundell in the runs as good,
isn't it. I mean Tom Lathan would probably like the
innings again out.

Second ball, Well, you don't shoulder arms like that. And
you can see the look on his face when it
cleaned his stick, So I was like, oh, no, what
have I done? Incidentally got sent in, but Nathan said,
look we would have batted anyway, so they probably got
what they wanted, if you will. And one thing about
this game, fine Wellingtonian. Never forget when he left the

That's right, Tom Blundell Todle is a great cricket at
when his backs up against the wall. When it's not
he doesn't really shine. But when there is trouble, when
he needs to get traction and grip and hang in there,

He is your man. So hopefully newsylet more bat on
a bit and get some more runs. I'm very much

the bowlers, I mean, you can't imagine that any more
than one or maybe two of them will be involved

And also the influence of Russian Revenger and the new
boy Foxcroft, because they've got to get in there and

Foxcroft will be involved in some of the rock stars
come back from the IPL. But you know the nature

But you talk about depth, Even a great, big, tall
man like Carle Jamison, he could drown in the depth
that we've got when it comes to seeing bowlers.

So this is not a bad thing at all.

No, it can never be a bad thing when that
depth exists in sporting teams. So you were keeping eyes
on Origin. I think I was more cricket focused than
Origin focused. But I have caught up on what happened.
Twenty nil down and they win twenty to twenty, the
greatest comeback in Origin history does well.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
I honestly sat there at twenty nil and when you
know what's going to happen here, the Sydney Siders are
going to be so upset they're going to tear the
course stadium down, They're gonna set it on fire. I
thought it was going to be a dead set massacre.
But it's Origin that doesn't happen really does well. It
does from time to time. But New South Wales they

turned around me in and a not on our watch.
And then of course there was the issue with Caln
Ponger and that turned it completely And what a run home.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Tell us about that red card because there's been a
degree of controversy about it. Did you think it was
a fair red car for Kaylan Ponger in the second half.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
I thought that they might let it go because it
was Origin. But I think referee Ashley climb is like,
I really can't because if you look at how we
approached it. Look it was all like that when it happens,
but no wrapping of the arms head on head clash.
He kind of couldn't call any other way. But you
know what I mean about but I keep our whistles

in our pockets. But I think that was so obvious
he probably would have been ripped apart. But what did
that do? What did that do to Queensland? Have you
ever seen a more manly performance until the last minute
defending thirteen twelve? I mean that was stunning from Queensland.
It reminds me of Warriors defense.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Yeah, and they almost did it too, didn't they until
old Teddy Teddy James Tedesco scored the DECI decipher Yeah,
not than Claria Knox over the conversion, and all of
a sudden they've won it. Cleary good again. I think
there was doubts that well both Clary and Tedesco should
even be in the team in some quarters. Clearly they've
put those doubts to bed.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Hold my drink pretty much got that absolutely sort of.
But you know what that does is this again sets
the dominoes off for an outrageous second game in a
couple of weeks time, and it's kind of at a
vaguely neutral place as well. It's being held in Melbourne,
so this will be If this didn't get your juices

running for the rest of origin, there's something wrong with that.
That was a stunning second. Well, the whole thing was.
Because I'm a Queensland fan. I love the start of it.
Just a bit disappointed in the last minute. Now then

for sports fans and well, I think you can sacrifice
a bit of sleep to watch sport of that quality.
