This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Welcome on name the SPORTSFX podcast. My name's Darcy Watergrave
and this is at the Tuesday, the second of June
twenty twenty six. Coming up on today's show, I'm having
a yarm with Jacob Duffy, the New Zealand pace bowler
who is now an ip L champion. I'll be joined
in the chamber by Klay Wilson as we look at
(00:42):
some of the big sports stories of the day, and
I'll be speaking very positively about the Wars, even though
they didn't get the job done up against the penwith Panthers.
That's what we plan on doing, so let's do it
in other news and the wild vocal chaos of sport today.
They didn't need him as they shreded the Blues on
(01:03):
Saturday night, but he'll be greeted in the Chiefs camp
with smiles as big as he right. Dannie Mackenzie's back
to administer pains of the Reds on Saturday as Super
Rugby Pacific. It's very pointed from now on in. You're okay, right,
ain't you? Bro? It's a good a couple of weeks
on the sideline be sort of just keeping on the
(01:23):
body right, in the head right and now ready to go.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
For a week one.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Naomi Osaka has to drop the premat Fashion Show after
being ousted from the French Open by Arena Sablenka. The
number one seed, rolled through Naomi in straight sets to
book herself a spot in the quarter finals. Sablinka has
a tournament to win, but spares a thought for the
returning Serena Williams. The forty four year old is on
(01:47):
the comeback trail, starting with a wild card doubles match
at the Queen's Club in London. She's a legend and
it's it's inspiring to see, you know, and I'm actually
excited to see her.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Play and probably face her, so it's it's very cool.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
It's very good news for tennis and WYC skidder Hayden
Padden is unsure as to what happens next in the
field A factory team. He secured seventh place at the
Japan Rally over the weekend, a result he and the
team were looking for and enjoyed considering his inexperience on
the titan twisty tarmac stages.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
In the end, the result that we achieved was probably
the best that we could have done anyway. So in all,
we took the boxes and achieved what the team wanted.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Us to achieve.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Okay, So no chaos, all wild on the vocals Sport today.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
It's sports.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
And it's a warm welcome now to the podcast. Mister
Jacob Duffy, New Zealand fast bowler who's now an IPL champion.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Kidd a, Jake, how are we doing?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
All right?
Speaker 2 (02:50):
I'm doing pretty good. I'd say you'll be doing a
wee bit better. Bro, you're a champion in the IPL.
You wouldn't have thought that a year ago, would you.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
That's pretty buzzy experience. But yeah, it's awesome. That's obviously
it's a long tournament and so over there for well
ten eleven weeks now, so obviously go over there for
amount of time and come home with something that actually
makes it worthwhile.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
So it's pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Do you end up with a big fat bonus for
winning that thing or not?
Speaker 4 (03:17):
I think there's a there's a little bit. I'm not
sure we'll have to wait in the coming months of
sea weapons here, but I think they might be.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Yeah, tell us about the final itself, because you bold,
you didn't have the best time, It didn't take a wicket,
You went for nine and a half and over. How
are you feeling at the end of that about the
chances of the team after that? Were you the only
one who got squirted around to weave it?
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Nine and a half in the IPL is not that bad, mate,
So I think we got we got out of there.
I think they only got one, one, five sixty or something,
so pretty much ten times out of ten, you becks.
You have to chase that in the OPL. I don't
know if you saw many of the scores and stuff,
but like north of two hundred is pretty common. So
any day you went out of ten and over as
a seam isn't isn't too bad, I guess. But yeah,
(04:00):
I didn't by my best that day. I'm not gonna
lie ball didn't really swing much up top and then
a bottle couple shit nuts at the end. So yeah,
that's how it is. And there's some there's some blody
good crickets over there.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Give you that.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
I'll give you the tips so yeah, just I honestly
didn't care. One fifty five was a great team result.
He run his ps. So you got Varret Colely chasing
your total. You feel pretty good.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Yeah, well one hundred and fifty five was the total
peeled it off in eighteen over one hundred and sixty
one for the loss of five. What's it like sharing
a shed with someone who's almost taken on godlike status
in India and verat.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Coley, Yeah, it's interesting. Obviously played against him a few
times and like so you sort of see the fandom
from the other side of the fence. But yeah, obviously
to see it from from his point of views pretty interesting.
He's wow, it's a tough life in some ways. He
obviously he doesn't live in India for a reason because
he can't really get around and do anything when he's there.
(04:53):
But he's actually incredibly normal bloke like around the guys,
I was actually quite surprised. If there's anyone that's got
a bit of runway to be a bit of a deck,
he does.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
But he's not. He's awesome.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
He's he's real chill and he's very willing to help
out the sort of lads around him, including me, including
sort of some of the younger guys. So I was
actually I was actually stoked with sort of how he
embraced you and takes you on, and he certainly he
spends a lot of time with the obc's guys, so
you've got to know them like reasonably well, So pretty cool, dude,
really reason we down there too.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
What did you pick up out of your time over there?
As far as pushing this forward to other formats, plainly
the T twenty formats what you're doing there, but they
talk about being in the IPL and the amount of
experience you get from other players and what you learn
outside of the game. Is that a fair thing to say?
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Yeah, it is, man, you're just exposed to so much.
I guess from a bowling point of view, it literally
doesn't get harder. You've got obviously, every bending lineup's got
pretty much the top four or five is as good
as any international lineup. It helps him playing on these flat
tracks or small boundaries, and then you know you're checking
sort of the impact sub so you've got a link
and line up too, so you've got betters coming in
at eight and nine still, so it's a bit of
(06:02):
a fire doesn't a fire really from a bowling point
of view. But you know, I worked with guys like
we have Josh has Will and Boberni Sha Kumar and
their teams. So just working with those guys Booby helped
me with my slowbal. I guess we're similar in some
ways in terms of the way we try to bowl
our slable secuir off cutter, so it's quite cool to
two her ear off. And then even from like we
(06:25):
had a really good nalyst too, So just sort of
some of the insights and seeing different ways of doing
scouting and not only scouting players but scouting different pitches
and sort of how they react to to different sort
of stuff is it's all quite interesting. So you've picked
so much up a long way and it's yeah, it
is a very very cool tourn be part of.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Well, it's a primary target for you. As far as
how they trained you one they needed out of you.
Was there any particular work ons that they really pushed
you through you see the slower ball in anything else, around lyne,
around length, around anything at all? Did you learn anything there?
Speaker 4 (06:56):
They don't really sit you down and say what do
you want to improve on? Because you I guess you'll
mean to be there as the guy that's there to produce.
I guess it's up to you to take what you
can from it. But I guess, yeah, I guess. As
my role on the team, I guess it was to
use the new ball up top and the power play
and then by the end of it, because we had
such a good death ball as I was actually used
through the middle to sort of create work at chances,
(07:16):
so hereever I could do that, whether it's using the
bumper through the millovers, or whether it sometimes you had
to go a bit of defense because the betters are
getting away on you. You had to do that. So
it's sort of just adapting and rolling for the punches
and the team needs ties.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sportsfix with Darcy Waldgrave.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
There was a potential turning point for the Warriors club
in the NRL on Sunday. The potential turning point was
not in the season full Stop twenty twenty six, although
they are doing very very well, but in the entire
history of the Warriors, they didn't get the wood. They
didn't manage to turn the screws on the Penrith team
(08:00):
even though Penrith were lacking some origin superstars, but to
be fair, the Warriors were lacking some origin superstars as well.
Did he hear with the Warriors. They didn't get the
job done, they didn't get the points, but they didn't fold,
they didn't drop their lip, they didn't panic, and they
carried on fighting and contesting right the way through the
(08:22):
length of the game. They could have packed a sad
when they were sixteen six down in the shadow of halftime,
but they didn't. They steeled themselves. They came back and
the whole game provided a brilliant advertisement for the NERL
didn't win a couple of decisions, well they went the
right way for Penrith against the Warriors, but they were
(08:44):
there in the fight. They almost got the job done.
And when you log at the performance of the players
from one right the way through the interchange bench, you've
got to say that was a proud game for the Warriors.
They'll be filthy, plainly because they wanted the points. But
now in their bye week another one, they can sit
(09:05):
back and look at what they achieved up against the
pen with Panthers and say this season is tracking perfectly. No,
it wasn't. The turnaround everybody wanted, not the turnaround and
the season, not the turnaround and the career of the Warriors.
But there is so much to like out of that
exchange with the Panthers. I'd suggest that the up the
(09:26):
Wars call is going to carry on carrying on for
the rest of the season. Jenden suns.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
We're joined the Chamber now by Mega Management. His name
is at Winston Aldworth and he's in charge with thrashing
the journalists at the Herald, making sure they get the
best sport they can. That's fair enough, isn't it, Winston,
Welcome to the Chamber.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
Yeah, that's basically my job description in a nutshell, mate.
I don't think that i'd argue with that too. Threshing them.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Yeah, good, that's what it should be, mate, Many it
does old school good. Have you in here plenty to
talk about the wonderful world of sport and I suppose, well,
we've got a rather big event right on our doorstep.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
It starts tomorrow, mate, really, I mean it doesn't it
starts in whatever ten days.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
We're talking about the fief for World Cup.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
Yeah, the World Cup starts tomorrow in terms of like
New Zealand's sporting public consciousness because suddenly the all whites
are playing at midday and they're only playing Haiti and
it's only a friendly so you know, it's all it
doesn't really matter, but it.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Switches it on.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
It gets your time zone, you know, alignment set in place, and.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
This is when the squad actually get together and perform
and play. Now they're established, they know who they are,
and they're like, right, we've got to impress the.
Speaker 5 (10:38):
Gap superstars like Chris Wood and the super star Timpaigne
who suddenly, yeah, it's quite unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Four point three million at the time of recording this
more than you outrageous, more than you yell metic about
fourteen hundred, No, twelve hundred. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Is that on Tinder?
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Great story, Grinder, keep moving.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
Okay, yes, no, that's that's been an amazing story and
it's very kind of New Zealand. He fly to the concordery,
ironic kind of the guy's not no disrespect to pain,
but you're not really a social media superstar, but suddenly
you are through this weird convoluted thing.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
And that guy that influencer or flatulence or as I
like to call them, Al Scarpo, L Scarsol, l whatever.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Argentinan boat.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
He's going to be there.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
He's going to be there apparently.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
Yeah, well he's got you know, he's got a winning
team to back. Now the game he'll really want to
be at, because it increases from the obviously hate his
kind of low fire that the All Whites are the
lowest ranked team of the tournament.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Hated your second lowest but England on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
So Tim Paine can get himself a statue built in
his honor in downtown Buenos Areas if he if he
puts us his studs through Harry Kane's Achilles, which I
hope he doesn't and I'm sure he won't.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
But why do they the Argentines hate him. I don't
know the backstory of that.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
It was just Argentina looks fair enough. Yeah, lost mal Venus.
You argue one side, I'll take the other one. But yeah,
so yeah, Tim Payne, star of the show for the
All Whites from nowhere just just just suddenly there's this
whole other storyline to it, which for all the media
(12:26):
orgs around New Zealand's brilliant. We've already got our You know,
with every brig spawling tournament, you have a silly season
going on out the side.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Do you remember twenty eleven.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
We had Richie mcaw the cow that had a little
kind of silver fern on its forehead and Herold Jonas
Nick Jones tracked it down and Richie mcaw was somehow
I can't currac all how they did it. Richie mcaw
was predicting results like which bale of hay did did
Richie eat?
Speaker 3 (12:49):
From?
Speaker 5 (12:50):
The Richie McCaw story didn't end well for Richie macow
either does.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Did he end up being a little like what happens
to cows in Argentina.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
A little bit delicious? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Got that? What are you doing this year in the
hair or are you going to have a predictive fish
or whatever?
Speaker 5 (13:04):
We're not we're not, mate.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
No, that's old.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
That's gone.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Yep. Yeah, we'll leave.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
That to to countries that actually have giant octopuses and
tanks and TV studios.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
That was in Gymany, right, yea, they had this octopus.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Yeah, so yeah, no predicting animals here, but we'll we'll
just use our journalists whipping them to do the predictions.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
But look, look the England game on.
Speaker 5 (13:28):
Saturday were huge. They've had trouble selling tickets. I haven't
checked it for a day or two, but I know
a couple of days back they were.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Sorry.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
But towards the end of last week they've got to
think of seventy five thousand, maybe sixty five thousand seeded
stadium and they only had fifteen thousand tickets sold. So
that's that's a bit of a poor show, quite honestly.
They're playing in Florida and this whole timpaigne ironic Latin
Americans following the all whites thing could put a few
thousand bodies onto seat sets, so that could help.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Well, it's fafa's fault, isn't it Trump's fault, because they're
charging so much to do anything. They're even breefe. People
don't want to spend any money if it's not well
cut properly.
Speaker 5 (14:04):
Right, Yeah, yeah, probably, I guess they. From England's point
of view, New zeal was an odd pick for your
last big friendly game into the tournament, and maybe they
figured a bunch of a bunch of boozed up Jordi's
would fly out for one big game in Florida, you know,
if they cut.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
Perhaps those.
Speaker 5 (14:23):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, so look it'll south out and there
because they do dynamic pricing in the States, so they
just make it like five.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Bucks on the door or something.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
But that would be a worry for the overall tournament,
if you know. There have been some complaints about not
just the ticket pricing, but things like trainsport.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
Transport.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
Yeah, there's some train from whatever Manhattan out to the
main stadium in Jersey. It's normally I don't know, six bucks,
eight bucks something. It was like one hundred and forty.
Because you know, welcome to Homer.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Capitalism gouging.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Yeah, it's not capitalism, it's gouging. Yeah, so be it.
So they really, as you said, it kind of gets
underway for New Zealand as of tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
Yeah, this time tomorrow, you have the kind of juices
flowing of it, kind of exciting times, exciting times.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Do you feel that this team can do the unbelievable,
not get out of their group, but actually win a game.
That's that's the key. That's the first step, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
I reckon they'll get out of the group. Just to
back that up a bit and I don't know. My
gut says that they've got Listen, I reckon, this is
the better squad that we had in twenty ten.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
It's a more complete squad.
Speaker 5 (15:26):
I think that the pool that we're in, you know,
there's no such thing as an easy pool at a
World Cup, but it's probably comparable to the one in
twenty ten and twenty ten Italy raining champs. They were
the big fish. The son got Belgium, who they're not
raining champs, so they're a big fish. They're also very old,
just as the Italians were. And then we've got a
couple of mid gradish kind of an egypt and Iran
(15:48):
and obviously.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
My Sala to deal with. Mate. That's what we're going
to worry about.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Right, Maybe one other Egyptian player, No I can't.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
He's probably squash if he's an Egyptian.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
But I'll tell you that all the Egyptian fans could
name him Paint and then well, you know, Iran, like
who knows Iran could Maybe there's this amazing thing where
the backs to the wall and their owning players have
an absolute blinder. But if they turn up and they're
thinking worrying more about you know, what's going on home
and their own personal safety because they're flying in and
out of Mexico for their games, so you know they
(16:20):
might be turned up waying. They're going to get turned
around at the border, so you know there'll be other
things on them ones. You know, nothing that you take
nothing for granted. But I think that gives you a whit.
It's a bit of a nudge up for being one
of those best third place getter teams of nothing else.
But we should be we should be looking to get
points against certainly Iran and Egypt.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Yeah, and talking of points, we didn't get any points.
And say we, I mean the Penrose mud Dogs the
Warriors up against Penrith on Sunday. It was a great
game of league. The result wasn't worth it for us,
but you've got a couple of little points out of
you watched it far too keenly.
Speaker 5 (16:57):
Well yeah, I mean probably game of the season right,
a watchable spectacle showing about the result. I think they
probably go home not overly mate.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
They didn't defecate the do then sixteen and they carried on.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
That was you know, if they meet again an Auckland,
as they do in a month or a couple of
months time, they backed themselves to turn that one around,
and that was the game could have gone any way.
So you know, this is they showed their real deal.
But the thing that got me, mate, was so car
Perreiri gets his try right and Paul Alamary, the Penrith winger,
(17:35):
spills that has a shocker or no, they didn't even spill.
He lost his footing or something, and so James Fisher
Harris gives him a blast.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
So he goes up face to face.
Speaker 5 (17:43):
I don't even know what he's saying, but he's just
reminding him that he you know, you know, you screwed up, mate,
and we scored a try. You totally totally, and so
far all all's fear and love and war. Then the referee,
Jared Sudden comes in and gives James Fisher Harris a blast.
Not first of all, some Penrith players came and gave
Fisher Harris a shove, but so the refields he's got
(18:05):
a step in to like protect the Penrith players from
from a mean warrior man saying some mean things. And
I just thought that was really lame. And you know,
I don't think we can dispute any of the calls
on the disallowed tries and things in this game. But
it did just show to me this, if you'd flipped
that around, right, if you flipped that around, if Penrith
had bagged to try and one of their players was
(18:26):
giving some lip to the warrior who had screwed up,
I don't think you'd ever seen an NROL official step
and to protect the feelings of an upset warrior in
that situation. So it's just a little reminded just constantly
they should show.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Him a yellow card, a yellow a light yellow card.
You're careful, you're upsetting this guy.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
Like the smallest card in the world.
Speaker 5 (18:45):
I just I just thought that was lame, Like let
them because you know, at the end of the day, mate, Alimo,
he had the last laugh, he got two tries, he
got the winner, and he's on the winning team.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
So you know, let it play out. Ref you know, I.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
Will try and if you want more of this you
can through what can I called you the managing editor
or I don't know what's the actual title. Cracker Chief
whip Cracker of the New Zealand Herald Shorts journo team.
His name is Winston or Worth Winston. Thanks for joining
us in the chamber.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
