this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Bye.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Hello there, film welcome on into the Sports Fix podcast.
My name is Darcy Walter Grave. This is all you
need to know about the wonderful wide world of the
sport today, Tuesday, the twenty sixth of May. Coming up
in this a program and I'll be talking with former
Warriors coach, former Kiwis coach Bluie mcclennan about the makeup
(00:42):
of the Warriors side, a couple of missing players and
of course a rather large fixture coming up this weekend
up against the Penmouth Panthers one plays two. I'll be
joined in the chamber by Clay Wilson, Director of Sport
for News Talk z B, and I've got a few
thoughts around the oddity of resting players ahead of a
(01:04):
playoff series. I think you know what I'm talking about.
That's our plan. So, like all plans, slips get going.
In other news and in the vocal world of sport today,
a problem shared is a problem half Incoming Netball Chief
Executive Jenna Woodson told my Casking this morning that many
minds across many sports is the way forward. Free sharing
(01:28):
of information that a greater good. Wow.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
We need to share those challenges and we need to
share the touch times more generally and confident, because the
more we can understand what's happened when things go wrong,
the more we can try and mitigate it happening elsewhere
into the future.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
State of Origin gets its flex going tomorrow night, the
first of three referee light into state exchanges. New South
Wales has already taken an early hit with Mitchell Moses
succumbing for a handstring strain. Coach Glory Daily has been
forced to tink it with us a cop road to line.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
Up had a strain of the HEMI nothing major but
just too risky early ford from a game, so Ethan
Strange will start and Maddy Burdon will come to the bench.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
And five times surfing the world at champ Carissa Moore
has revealed her driving internal confidence ahead of winning the
WSL Pro title event at Raglan. She'd been out of
the briny deep for a couple of years, being a
brand new mum, but she had certainty a very powerful tool.
Speaker 6 (02:33):
It was like that for me here, and not that
I thought it was going to be easy or anything.
It's just like that intangible feeling that like we believe
that it's going to work out, and I just I'm
so grateful that I got to feel that again. I
don't know if I'll ever feel it again in.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
The boardroom, at training and in the drink. That's sport Today.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
You scan Avian. It's Sportsfix with Dancie Valdegreve.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
That's a warm welcome to the Sports Fix podcast. Now
to Brian Bloye mcclenn form Keewee coach format Warriors coach,
with his thoughts on the team at today in its future. Brian,
how are you.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I'm really good, Darcy. I hope you're doing well too, mate.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
I am indeed absolutely reveling and what's going on at
the Warriors right now. And as a former member of
the franchise, you must be smiling from ear to ear
with the way this team is progressing. What's six on
the bounces unheard of one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Look, they're doing so many things right, you know, right
right through it, from the front office, through the coaching,
through recruitment, retention. The players are really on form and
there they've got their game gone how they want it
to go. The young players are just getting more and
(03:52):
more experienced and getting better and better. They just keep improving,
and it's it's like where where will they stop? Each
year they're just they're getting better and better, and it's
it's fantastic to see Darcy.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Well, we know what can stop them because it happens
with not only the Worries but other teams. And it's
the twist that is injury. But you suggest that this
team's got so many great players playing in so many
positions that they probably could survive a couple of rotten injuries.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Well they already are. I mean, you know it was
Luke Metcalf went down, people were like, oh no, and
then Tanner Boyd. So two halves they go down, and
you know, in any other club that would be major problems.
But here we are. You know, we've got Chanel who's
(04:48):
absolutely playing the house down.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
And so Marty comes back in.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Now I've got to put my hand up here and
oh yeah, I've put my hand on heart and say
the truth here. I thought I think they're the two
best anyway, but just to see them leading the team
around on the field. It's been fantastic obviously. Yeah, you know,
you sort of got to get your form going and
(05:13):
then up.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Got that going really really well.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
And I think their combinations with linking with Wade Egan,
who's so so clever and smart out of dummy half,
he's so skillful and they're really jumping on the back
of that momentum. So it's fantastic to see.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
We're going to find out a little bit more about
that depth because as you rightly mentioned, and we've lost
a couple of players, which has been a body blow.
Tomighty has played well in his two games, but he's
not played against a Penrith team that sits at the
top of the table. Do you see his effect will
still be the same. You've seen them though in the
(05:51):
last couple of weeks suggest this is going to be
fine and transition is not a problem.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Look, he's a cool customer.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
I've always liked him. I thought when he played for
North Queensland and led them to the Grand Final without
Jonathan Thurston, there showed the class of the man he
can play. Uh. In terms of playing against Penrith, he's
going to be in the same position as the other
as the other sixteen they put the blow torch on you.
(06:22):
They actually played similar styles. I think both the Warriors
and the Penrith have. They value defending territory better than
any of the other clubs in the NRL. They really
work hard and restrict your yardage coming out of your
out of the danger end and and you can see
(06:43):
they're very passionate about it, so which puts a lot
of stress.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
On you on your attack. And so.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Both teams will have to put up with that and
and uh and navigate their way of getting getting at
least to a good position to put their kick, get
their kick, chase game getting or.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Going on loving to Mighty Martin and the next cab
off the rank if required. He's coming off for the reserves.
We haven't seen him in quite some time. He wasn't
ready to roll, he wasn't match fit and there was
a small issue around him moving to Saint George Luke
Metca finds himself on the reserves. Do you see him
(07:24):
coming into the main team ahead of this game? Would
you take that punt if you're a coach?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
No, I'm going to Chanel Tabeta Harrison and and Comarti
Martin every day of the week that their form has
been really good. They've got good experience, they're calm Metca
he'll he'll play reserves and and he has every opportunity
(07:53):
to play his way back into the team and that's
that goes for everyone. And that's what the Warriors are
doing really well. You know, not only do they have
you know, they lost a couple of players in the
hearts and where they're going to have to fight for positions,
you know with Cannaboid being out, and the same is
(08:14):
going to happen in the senses with you know, they
are players Roger to A Vasischeck being ruled out for
the year. So it's if you're going to go on
and want a premiership, you're going to have to face
these challenges and and so far they're they're doing that well.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Obviously you've got to touch wood.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
You don't have too many more that you stay you know,
pretty healthy going forward. But there is genuine competition for positions.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's sportsfecx with Darcy Waldgrave.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
To rest or not to rest, that is the question tomorrow.
The Super Rugby Pacific teams for this weekend's very last
round will be released plainly the way the table sits.
There are a couple of teams that cannot be moved from
their positions out of course, is the Hurricanes number one
top of the tablel and the Chiefs in second place
regardless of results. That's at one and two. That's where
(09:13):
they sit. So it introduces the interesting conundrum around momentum
and around resting players so they can hit the ground
running with the flames at their feet come playoff time
when it really counts. The Crusaders are hosting the Hurricanes.
The Crusaders need a victory to attempt to get into
third place. The Chiefs are hosting the Blues, and the
(09:37):
Blues of course need to get that win to keep
the pesky Crusaders behind them a lot on both games,
so the decision to rest players could well indeed fall
squarely into the lapse of the Crusaders or the Blues.
But will they rest players? The biggest you hear, of course,
is the potential for injury, which is a reason some
(10:01):
coaches choose to let guys have a sit down to
reboot their energy levels their headspace before they hit the
big games. The knockout games the games that really matter,
so injuries one thing that the tyranny of taking a
defeat into a must win game is another. Will either
(10:22):
coach from either side of the Chiefs or the Hurricanes
roll the dice and keep their teams the strongest they
possibly can ahead of the playoff fixtures. Here's my fear
if the Hurricanes or the Chiefs choose to rest some
of their key players ahead of the finals series and
(10:42):
leave the bulk of the work to be done with
the more senior guys in the team. While some of
the younger guys are more inexperienced guys get a chance
to flex their muscle, one of the senior guys will
go down in a heap. And that's the risk these
coaches take. Predicting injury is impossible. So my thought, you
(11:02):
take your best team in and you charge through to
the quarters, to the semi and then you win the tournament.
It's called momentum, and I think in this case the
coaches are going to have to rely on it.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
The chamber is now in session on Sports Fix.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
The chamber door now opens and it reveals the figure
of mister Clay Wilson. He runs the show at News
Talk ZEBB Sport Clay, welcome on and mate.
Speaker 7 (11:30):
Trust you well just brat, I sit down just right here.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Yeah, I know that's fine. Do you want to sit
down any more comfortable? Standing up?
Speaker 7 (11:36):
Well, I've got options even better.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Okay, good? Well can you talk? Yes, that's the main thing.
What's the latest in the saga of Moana Passifica, the
color Noah, the hold on? Fucking can I fuck this?
I'll start this again three two one and it's a
warm welcome to the chamber two head of Sport News
(11:59):
Talk ZB. His name is Clay Wilson. Come on and
old mate, how are you very well?
Speaker 7 (12:03):
Thank you good.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Let's look at some of the big sports stories for today.
One of them is a story that isn't really a story,
but it's continued to be a story. Mana Passifica. It
looks like they're dead, but maybe not. Maybe there's life
and the dog. Yet, what have you gleaned out of
all this? I've been on the phone trying to work
it out, but at the moment everything's paused waiting for ends.
Speaker 7 (12:26):
Are or well, it depends who you believe. The latest
we've heard is that when St Peters has actually spoken
about this now of course that the Deputy Prime Minister,
someone who likes to you know, knows a lot about
a lot and when he wants to will comment about
a lot, seems to have made some kind of vague
comment that there may be some news coming about Mauana pacifica. Now,
(12:50):
how the government has involved here, I haven't dived that
deep into it on this.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
Is government money though, isn't it for Moana? Then they
owe the taxpayers some money.
Speaker 7 (13:00):
Some money is how exactly it all kind of works
out on the spreadsheet? Who knows, But obviously this is
a financial situation and the government are owed to money financially.
And he seems to be intimating that there's some kind
of potential solution here. He hasn't used those words, but
that's kind of what people are. Some people are taking
(13:21):
from it.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
So but they're gone into liquidation, right, so it's finished.
But you can trade out of liquidation. But they've got
nothing to trade because all they have is IP. I mean,
no one turns up to the games. I don't think
they have any assets, right, so kind of hard for
them to go any further forward or government intervention possibly
the only thing that happened.
Speaker 7 (13:38):
Now, well, I'm assuming if there's enough money presented from
a certain source or sources, that this can still be resurrected. Clearly,
all the parties are trying to do their best to
prevent this from happening, even though Muana came out last
month and said, look, as things stands, we can't continue,
We're going to be disbanded. But money is the answer
(13:59):
to a lot of problems in this world, and I
think this situation firmly fits into that category. So let's
see what pans out. I mean, maybe you know, by
the time we step out of this little chamber here,
we might have even more news one way or the other.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
But well, I spoke to Candalowa and then, look, we
can't say or do anything. We can't move because ZR
are still looking into a rescue Patick may or may
not involve the government. We simply don't know. So it
really is paddling at the moment, doggy paddling. Do we
know what goes on?
Speaker 7 (14:32):
Well, I think what you can say is that it's
positive that clearly there's a lot of work being done
to try and find a solution here. Right, A lot
of people see the value in this team, not just
for what they are and what they represent and what
they're trying to achieve, but also for the competition as
a whole. Right, here's a competition that we've already lost
the rebels. We're down to what eleven teams now, you know,
(14:53):
you want to keep as many teams as possible going
for the integrity of the competition.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
I bet the Blues don't.
Speaker 7 (15:01):
Perhaps perhaps maybe the Blues might have a different view.
But all we can say is it's a real, real
wait and see and this thing is a is a
moving feast, especially as we get to this point, which
is kind of they've been saying for a while. Something
needs to happen. Something needs to happen. There is a
point of no return right where the competition has to
plan for next year.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
And people need jobs. They're not going to lay it around.
They're gonna up and disappear.
Speaker 7 (15:26):
They don't know what all of those things within Molana
come into it as well, for sure, So let's see
what happens. It's it's really hard to say at this point.
It hasn't looked great for a while. And you know,
if you ask me here right now, it's still you know,
I think I would be surprised to see it kind
of be be saved. But hey, where there's hope, there's
(15:48):
what do they say, where there's life, there's hope, or
where there's have I got my metaphors.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
A dom spiro spiro? I believe that's Latin for while
we breathe, we hope? How about that?
Speaker 7 (15:59):
There's one topic I never thought I would delve into
in this industry of sports broadcasting.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Latin philosophy. Yeah, well, ain't fair enough, but it's basically
it's a watching brief. We just simply don't know.
Speaker 7 (16:12):
Yeah, and until the competition is over this year, until
they played their last game this weekend, you know they're
going to clearly going to try and find a solution.
So fingers cross for all those players, the team, the competition.
I think most people are of the opinion that it
would be great if they could keep going. So he's hoping.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Yeah, and I'm not going to do Latin more in
a sing. It ain't over. Tell its over Dad, de
will stop doing that.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
Right.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Let's move on to the next subject, The Crusaders. It
is believed, sorry the Herald Understand News talking z b
understand that the coach of the Crusaders now that Rob
Penny is departing is to be.
Speaker 7 (16:54):
Scott Hanson.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
There you go.
Speaker 7 (16:56):
You know, here's a name who kind of worked in
the background for a lot of the recent past, both
with the Crusaders and with the All Blacks, and then
amid Scott Robinson's depart sure we get this kind of
revelation that he was he was running the team or
he was the effective head coach of the All Blacks
the whole time and was you know, a big topic
(17:19):
of discussion in terms of the review that was undertaken
of the team that ultimately resulted in Scott Robertson departing.
Now someone who it seems that within the Crusaders at
least is held within very high regard both by staff
in players obviously a lot of those players All Blacks
as well, So you know, in terms of experience in
(17:39):
what he's done, clearly someone who's very much.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
And detachment to the Crusade qualified. It's got a connection.
Speaker 7 (17:44):
I think what's been revealed for sure is with Scott
Henson is he is a unique character. He has a
unique way of expressing himself, a unique way of coaching
rugby and when you are unique and everyone has the
idiosyncrasies for sure, you know you're going to get a
lot of some people that are going to love that,
and then perhaps you're going to get some that don't.
(18:04):
And that fits into a lot of industries, a lot
of walks of life, right. But clearly at the Crusaders,
they think this is going to work. A lot of
the players really love them, that the team wants them,
clearly wants them back. The administration there, so I mean
in terms of replacements for a penny, it's it's pretty decent.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
You know.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Oh well, I like the fact that he's been ousted
from the All Blacks, so he'll have a lot to
prove and a lot of drive internally to get things
done and go no, no, that was the poor decision.
Watch this hold my beer as they say.
Speaker 7 (18:36):
Well, and I wonder if there's been there's going to
be a conversation between himself and Jason Holland, and you
know that the band is kind of not back together,
but they're all gone back to their solo careers.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
You know.
Speaker 7 (18:47):
Jason Holland of course came out of there as an
assistant coach with the All Blacks, is going to be
coaching the Blues next year. Scott Henson also, you know,
got moved on as part of that whole, that whole
shift to the day Renny team, and now you know
he's going to be taken over the Crusaders. So you know,
guys that have come out of that environment clearly qualified
for these jobs. And I guess only time will tell
in terms of what he will be able to do
(19:08):
with with this team next season going.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
For and finally, Clay, any comment to make on the
enhanced games? No, I didn't think so, neither of I
thanks very much for that. Clay Wilson. You may remove
your carcass from the well. He's still alive. If your
carcass was to leave, I'll have to drag it out.
Speaker 7 (19:24):
I'm a sporting zombie.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
Thanks boss, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Leading a X.
