Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks EDB.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Welcome on and the Sports Fix the podcast. Great to
have your company. It's a Tuesday at thirty first of
March twenty twenty six. My name's Darcy Waldgrave and as
always a big thanks to DJ Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's
most trusted home builder. The part of this podcast featured
in today's series of Rants that be joined by Darren Bezi, manager,
(00:41):
the coach, the gaffer of the All Whites off the
back of their four to one victory over cele last
night at Eton Park. Will talk the good, bad and
the indifferent. With Darren shortly joining us in the chamber,
we go to News Talks MB's Director of Sport, mister
Clay Wilson. We juggle around some of the big sports
stories of the day for a league, got a rugby
(01:02):
and we'll touch on it football as well. That's what
we intend on doing. So like with all intents, let's
have a purpose. They're making any sense onward in the
sporting sphere. Over the last twenty four the all Whites
got themselves are South American skelt For the very first
time after years of trying, they finally got a result
(01:23):
when they beat Chile into submission last night at Eaton Park.
The FIVA Friendly Your World Cup warm up match ended
up a four to one that panting not helped by
a new disciplines Chile I'm going to play a red
carded and sent after only twenty eight minutes. Two yellows
in four minutes was enough to see Dadio or Saudio
mart manager Darren Bazi was chuck regardless.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Most pleasing aspect, you know. We scored goals, you know,
and we created lots of chances and that's obviously something
that we haven't been able to do it all the time.
So yeah, really pleasing in lots of different aspects tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Black hated coach Robert Walter won't be swayed by recency bias.
Thomas Connor has been laying batsman to waste for a
larming regularity discipline shield season, snaring twenty seven wickets at
an average of fourteen point four and four matches over
the last month. Rob thinks though he has more dues
(02:18):
to pay before he moves into international representation. Hush, a
bit more than fair.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
Another left im in our system is Andy performed exceptionally
well to the back end of the season. But you know, again,
I keep coming back to what has been the strength
and strength has been acknowledging. Guys have performed not just
you know, one half of the season, what season after season?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
And Josh Lord, the white couple lock with twelve all
Black Cats, has recommitted sins right be the twenty five
year old fronts some numbers and the like, put ten
to paper and cemented his three year deal. Easy as right, boss,
I was once we obviously we did all of my
homework and forget out all for more found than my
(03:00):
little family as well.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
And once we did all that, it was, Yeah, it
was easy to around here in Amiltons.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
And that's Sport Today News.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
It's Sports Fix with Darcy Valdegreve.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
How were joineding now on sports Fox podcast by Darren Bezie,
the gaffer, the manager, the coach, the boss, men of
the All Whites. Welcome men, I trust you.
Speaker 6 (03:24):
Well, yes, feeling pretty good? Thank you?
Speaker 3 (03:28):
What you'd say so after what happened last night, you'd
never grinned from ear to ear, wouldn't you for one,
you wouldn't read about it.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Yeah, it was a good It was a good sort
of final game for the window. You know, we were
disappointed in the first game against Finland on Friday night
and came out of the game, you know, wanting to
put it right. You know, the players felt that they
didn't show them often. So you've had a good few
days after the the Finland game to look at it,
talk about it, and we asked for a reaction from
(03:58):
the players and you know, we got it and I
thought they were They were very good last night.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
It must have really climbed into the psyche yours as well.
I speak though, to provide for all ones into purposes
on Friday, what was a pretty flat performance considering we're there,
going to and who the opposition was. And it's something
you can't explain really sometimes it just doesn't click. Is
it the scenes you got from your mean.
Speaker 6 (04:23):
Yeah, a little bit.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
We did a lot of talking and you know, maybe
there's a little bit of pressure of you know, playing
at home and wanting to win and wanting to do
so well, and maybe a few people thinking about the
World Cup as well.
Speaker 6 (04:34):
But you know, we it wasn't that bad.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
You know, we didn't come out of the game and
when we analyze the game, it wasn't you know, it
wasn't so bad. We didn't get really down and like
we're not getting so up about this Chile resulting performance.
But you know, we definitely corrected a few things. You know,
the players highlighted a few areas that they thought they
could have done better in and you know, some of
that is the mindset, you know, being a bit more
aggressive defensively, a bit more front foot and you know,
(04:59):
and in possession, having a little bit more courage to
play the style.
Speaker 6 (05:02):
That we want to play.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
And you know, they went into yesterday's game as Chile
with that mindset, you know, mindset and started the game
really well. And you know, I think even when it
was you know, eleven to eleven, you know, I thought
we were we were very bright and definitely improved from
on the Friday night. And you know, then the obviously
the red card does affect the game. But it's not
always easy playing against ten men. You know, there's plenty
(05:25):
of games in world football where you know that doesn't
work out that the you know, the team with eleven
suddenly you know win comfortably.
Speaker 6 (05:33):
So I thought we did a great job, you know,
And that.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Was actually part of the change from Friday to Monday
was you know, in possession, the bull speed, you know,
the movement. Everything was a better tempo. We played more
simple and when you move a team around a team
of ten, when you move them around the pitch, you know,
on a good open pitch like it in part, you
know you're going to have a good evening. And the
boys did a great job.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yeah, a lot of teams, like when they lose a
playlight that they can steal someone become rather annoying more
than anything getting in the way. They figured they can't win,
so they're not going to lose. So you didn't have
that problem and that as a mindset that are you
actually going to run around through? You didn't change much
from the first twenty eight minutes, did you just carried
(06:16):
on applying that same concept.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
We did, you know, And then at halftime we talked
about just being ruthless, you know, and playing the same way.
And sometimes, as you know, even when you go to
two to three in a larp, there's an element of
you know, you start complicating things, and we just wanted
to have a really good, simple performance. You know, we
created lots of opportunities to score. You know, we scored goals,
(06:39):
which you know we haven't done recently. So I was
really pleased for some of the guys, you know, especially
like Costa, you know, and Wayne O come on and score,
and Jesse you know, with this first start scoring a goal.
So you ended up a really really nice evening for us.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
After that game against Finland and you talked about World
Cup coming out, how much pressure do you think is
on these players to think the selections coming up more
in about five weeks time, we better and press the
geffer because that can construc a restrained players kind to
a degree. So a part of your role and they're saying, hey,
I know what I'm doing and how I'm picking. Don't
(07:15):
worry about what's getting right here right now. Just just
release yourself. Are we part of the peep talk? But
the discussion?
Speaker 4 (07:23):
I mean, yeah, hopefully. You know I'm not putting pressure
on the players around that. You know, there is the
potential pressure you know that they're feeling, you know, because
we're getting so close.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
But you know, part of our job is to make them.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Sure that they're relaxing, ready to play in fresh So yeah,
Friday night was a strange one, an unusual performance from
us in what we've done over the last few years. So,
you know, I think last night was more reflection of
this is who the team is in and out of possession.
And you know a lot of players came out of
this camp with a lot of credit and put themselves
(07:55):
in a good position moving forward.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
So what they're doing is putting the pressure back on
you again. Going right, you've got to make the selection.
W what don't we five six weeks away before you
name that squad and everyone's providing now right, They're making
it difficult for the clouding the waters somewhat.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
Darren, they are, and that's the that's the challenge we
set them, and that's what we want, you know.
Speaker 6 (08:15):
You know, it's not.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Nice having tough conversations with people, but you know that's
what we want.
Speaker 6 (08:19):
We want to have good decisions to make.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
The players are all aware of, you know, the selection
criteria and everything you know that they're up against, and
they all know each other. So you know, we have
got players that are currently weren't with us in camp,
currently injured, but you know, most of them are on
track to be fully fit and should be fine for
the World Cup. So yeah, it's going to get to
the stage where it's going to be some tough decisions
(08:44):
to make.
Speaker 6 (08:45):
And I mean that's great news for New Zealand and US.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
You know, we're starting to build that depth of really
people challenging in every position.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's sports fixed with Dancy Walter Grave.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Zen crickett and New Zealand politics. Both they have their
fierce share of problems. I think that's a fierce statement.
In New Zealand cricket, the big issue is the T twenty,
does it become en Z twenty, does it go to
the Big Beast? Does it stay as the super smash?
There is process, there is time and eventually we'll find
(09:21):
out what the decision is. The biggest problem New Zealand
politics has is New Zealand politics. But when the two meets,
we're in some serious strife. At least we don't have
this to worry about. The Pakistan Cricket Board have fined
a bowler one hundred and twenty six thousand dollars. That's
like two thirds of the central contract over a social
(09:45):
media post which criticized a politician who was at the
opening game of the PSLT twenty. The entire event at
the moment is being played under lock and key, being
played behind closed doors, but some people are still allowed
to go, like the Chief Minister of the Punjab Province
Mariama Nowasmi, players head of the game Darfy Stadium and
(10:09):
a tweet this bowl of Nasim Shah asked why is
she treated like the queen at Lord's. It was just
a statement. It wasn't a death threat, it wasn't insulting,
it didn't smear their good name. But the precious people
in the Pakistan government, the very precious people at Pakistan
Cricket decided that this was an affront to the game
(10:33):
and an affront to politics and they slapped them with
that massive fine. So for all the dramas going on
Zealand cricket and Zealand politics, at least we don't have
to deal with such gossamer thin egos as those ones
in Pakistan cricket and politics, although there are some people
(10:55):
in the Beehive that forget about it.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
The Chamber is now in session on sportsfix.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
The chamber doors fly open and aggressively end staggers. No,
it didn't sound right, did it? Get a Clay Wilson
trying to set you up somehow. You're not aggressive, you
don't stagger. And the chamber doesn't have any doors because
it technically doesn't exist.
Speaker 7 (11:17):
No, we don't always agree in here, but I don't
feel like it's a place of aggression necessarily.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
No, no, no, no, no, I'm just overreading things. I've
been off for a couple of days. Clay Wilson is
the boss man of News Talk z B Sport. He's
with us now to talk about a couple of big
sports stories of the day that we heard from Darren
Basic and it's the head coach plaining the manager of
the gaffer of the All Whites. Before we touch on
the other two subjects, he says, pleasing a lot, but
(11:43):
it has been, hasn't it right? Not a lot to
complain about in that space.
Speaker 7 (11:47):
Especially when you take the result from last night in
context of the first result which was so disappointing. The players,
the coaching stuff, everyone really disappointed with that first result. Thinking,
you know, the World Cup's just on the horizon. You
want to go into the World Cup, le you want
to go away to North America with a bit of
momentum and to give the home fans something to kind
of get them excited. And they absolutely got that last night,
(12:08):
didn't they Who predicted that they've never beaten a South
American opposition before, And then they come out and yes,
everything in context, Chile lost a player after what twenty
eight minutes. Yeah, and it's a team not going to
the World Cup, a team in a bit of a
transitional phase.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
But it's still they scored goal. That's the big takeaway,
isn't it. They brought the ball on the back of
the net and they looked fairly competent in doing so
as well. Yeah, there a couple of times, so it
was a bit like, oh, why didn't you shoot then? Yeah?
Speaker 7 (12:38):
Yeah, And that's the thing, not just they didn't just
get four goals and have four chances. They had other
chances as well. And also, you know, obviously this team's
standout best player, the team's captain, Chris Wood, is not
here yet, still coming back to full fitness, is back
on the pitch over in England with Nottingham Forest. But
you know, you add him to a lineup like this
and you become inherently more dangerous.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
So goals.
Speaker 7 (13:00):
Finding goals has been the big issue, and last night
we saw four of them against a good team, so
that's got to be a good thing.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Happy days. Right, let's move into other topics. That was yesterday,
which a look at unfortunately the man who just cannot
stay fit for the Warriors any way, co captain Mitch
Barnett out now the broken thumb for we don't know
four weeks, six weeks, three weeks to is any confirmation
many websites and like a reporting four to six weeks,
(13:30):
but we kind of don't know.
Speaker 7 (13:31):
Yeah, the club themselves are officially saying there's no return
to play, but it sounds like it's a round a month,
give or take. He's had surgery, he's got his arm
in a sling. We know, we know that for sure.
So it's just, you know, the kind of luck you
don't need him. You know, sometimes these things happen, and
twos or threes, don't they And.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
Two what's happened again?
Speaker 6 (13:55):
Right?
Speaker 7 (13:55):
I mean, I guess it's something like a broken thumb
is a lot more less serious than you know, an
acl or the thing, the thing that he's been recovering
from so look, it's never good to lose your captain,
one of your best players. But hopefully this is just
a minus speed bumping. You know. Look, the Warriors didn't
(14:16):
have him for the first two games anyway and did
it right. And I've only had him back for a
game and a half anyway, so it's not like it's
not like they haven't been used to not having him
in that in that run on side, he hasn't started yet.
In either of those games he played, so crappy, crappy
news for the Warriors and the fans and for Mitch Barnett.
But in the context of the NRL season, he'll come
(14:37):
back with still a lot of water to go under
the bridge.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
And we've got plenty of other players that know, not
of the same quality yet, but guys that stepped into
the breach late last year and carried on. So so
there are guys on the side going I can do this.
And as you said, he hasn't started yet, so I don't.
You can say a blessing in disguise if you will,
He probably won't want to hear that, But more opportunity
(15:00):
for more young fellows to prove their worth at the NRL.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
Yeah, and look, I think that's one thing that's been
born out of not having Mitch Barnett and Luke Mca
for the start of the season has been really the
evidence of the depth of this Warriors team. You know,
a lot of discussion before last week's game, while a
disappointing result before the game about who do you leave
out and talking about quality players that are going to
have to be left out of the nineteen altogether. We
(15:26):
all go back to the bench and you know how
often have we had those discussions in terms of the
Warriors in the past.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
Not a lot.
Speaker 7 (15:32):
So, look, there's a long season ahead. Let's hope it's
shorter rather than longer in terms of his recovery. And
once he gets back is kind of bad luck in
terms of being off the park.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Is done right, still on with code but not rugby league,
rugby union. Josh Lord's resigned again, which is great for
the oft injured. He doesn't get used a lot.
Speaker 7 (15:53):
But Josh, he's a big man, he's got long leaders
you know, sound.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Like Steve Anson, He's one of the big, jumpy guys.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
I think having quality locks is always important, and there's
a few of them at the moment. Yeah, and I
think he's had a really good start to the season
with the Chiefs after like you say, he's had a
sort of a couple of years, have been on and
off the park a few bits. So you just want
to see him stay on the park because I think,
you know, and the fact that Endzida have re signed
(16:22):
him for this long shows that what they think about
him that you know, I think he can be a
world class starting lock and an all Blecks team if
he can just get some consistent game time.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
So when he's right in the right time perid. He's
twenty five years old, this is the next five years
is when he really comes into his own sees who
he is. So it's nice, nice that he's here. It's
a good news story because we're tired of losing players.
A lot of people have been re signing. And another
player that's re signed probably the sports story of the day,
the ghost Runner Sarrenson McGee has decided she's sticking around
(16:54):
fifteen's sevens whatever she wants to play, right, how does
that operate?
Speaker 7 (16:57):
I like the ghost Runner. It's like it reminds me
of you know, players that have got spiders on them,
just the opposition find them very difficult to tackle for
no apparent reason.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
Quick just suddenly through gaps on Earth? Did you get through? Then?
Speaker 7 (17:12):
That's exactly why Braxon, Sorrens and McGee is, isn't she.
She's really absolutely just burst onto the scene, didn't she?
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Last year?
Speaker 7 (17:19):
And then of course went to the World Cup, starred
there as well, and has now transitioned to the sevens
team and been doing similar things there. So this is
really another case of the news on rugby union looking
at the women's program in terms of how many games
they play, what opportunities the women have available compared to
the men, and saying we need to tailor these contracts,
(17:41):
these situations a bit more to each different scenario. So
she's going to be primarily a sevens player, but she's
going to play most of Super Rugby OPIKI for the
Blues this year and also be available for the entirety
of the fifteens campaign this year, which is quite substantial
compared to last year.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
A lot of the complaints around from Ferns so is
that they just simply haven't got enough time in the seat,
and when they went into the World Cup last year,
they're under bait a lot of these other nations, they've
got big seasons and they get to play a lot,
so to juggle between fifteens. But a sevens well, keep
her in shape, keep you going, so that's not a
bad thing. But I think the bigger picture is how
is the women's O picky season going to develop? Is
(18:20):
it going to get much bigger? Look, I don't know,
but that is a big thing for ends R right.
Speaker 7 (18:24):
Yeah, for sure, and I think ns are quite rightly
in my opinion, have been quite careful in terms of
how they've advanced OPIKI and not getting ahead of themselves
with making it unsustainable in terms of the depth of
the talent pool in this country and wanting the competition
to succeed long term. But then you look at what
they've done and allowing some of these black fans to
go and play in the English Premiership, for example, allowing
(18:47):
Braxon Sorrens and mcgive the freedom to still play evans
and not be tied to the fifteens program. These are
examples of showing that flexibility because the women, like you say,
the Super Rugby competition isn't the same the NPC. The
FPC doesn't have the same kind of breadth of season
as the MPC, so they really have to tailor it
to try and make sure. The main thing is is
(19:07):
that our top female players, the emerging female players are
playing games of rugby, you know, consistently, are getting more
games under their belts so they can brocause because you
know Canada last year we saw at the World Cup
that was the big thing to come out of it,
wasn't it. They've just been playing more games. The Canadian
Rugby Union have found a way to just give them
more games and you can only get get better by
actually being on the park and play.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
Great news for women's rugby here in New Zealand. On
that director of Sports News Talks there be mister Clay Wilson,
why don't you smash through the doors and.
