Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks EDB. Follow
this and our Wide Ranger podcasts now on iHeartRadio. This
is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Welcome on into the Sports Vex podcast.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Hi.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
I'm Darcy water Grave, Iami or host of then Next
fifteen or twenty minutes, however long it takes me to
drag our way through all the important stories around sport today.
Coming up on the program, I'll be talking to Wendy
through which is the coach of the Southern Steel Because
the A and Z Premiership gets underway this week. After

(00:44):
all the trouble at mill from New Zealand Nepal last year,
it'll be a welcome return to athletes playing sport. I'll
be joined in the chamber by Alex Powell, Alex Today,
sports writer for the New Zealand Herald. And I've got
some opinion around Davy dum dumb Warner. That's the Master Plans,
so let's get amongst In other news, some sport happened today.

(01:07):
Here's some little evidence Raining Masters champion green jacket wearing
Irishman Rory McElroy is in a whole new headspace after
picking up the hallowed title last year, thus removing Donkey
Kong from his back and securing the coveted golf and
Grand Slam. The bro is in full chill mode.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
They feel so much more relaxed. I know that I'm
going to be coming back here for a lot of years,
going to enjoy the perks that the champions gets here.
And it doesn't make me any less motivated to go
out there and play well and try to win the tournament.
But yeah, just just more relaxed upon a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
O but Twidle, the Kiwi League sensation is still shining.
After his NRL debut, he scored with his first touch
of the ball for the paramount of eels and bagged
another meat pie two minutes later.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Bang go to your taste of first grade and and
he played twenty minutes and like that's just say the beginning.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
I want you know, I want to please ever a
long career.

Speaker 5 (02:06):
This is a this is a drink.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Basketball and his old chief executive, Belinda Edwards, believes that
three x three ball, a discipline which gave the Torblax
Pan a gold at the Asia Cup, is the best
way forward for medals at the Common Games and the Olympics.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
Achieving a medal on those stages it seems a bit
more likely than five x five at this stage, although
five x five is still very much part of our
longer term plan.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Better golf, touch, a rugby league and whos for good measure?
That was some sport today, U s a Avian It's
Sportsfix with Dancie Valde Greve. It is a warm welcome
to the Sports FX podcast and now to Wendy Fruit.
She is the chief disruptor. Actually we should tell it

(02:56):
like it is the coach of the Southern Steel ahead
of the opening of the a n Z Premiership netball.
We actually need to see some on the court after
what's happened with the sport the last six months, and
Wendy threw, I'd suggest you'd be in the same space.
Let's play right.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
Yeah, we're so excited to get on the court. I mean,
pre season has been ten weeks, the girls have been
training really hard, but there's no better feeling going into
round one knowing that you've had that pre season based
behind GM. Just excited to take the court and showcase
spot talented athletes we have down south.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
How much is the sport reeling after the trouble at
MIL that happened to the sport and went on for
months and months and months. It was a great left
for talkback because people were climbing into it. Do you
think that's died away? You think people can actually now
turn around and go right, we love the game forget
about everything else behind it.

Speaker 5 (03:47):
Yeah. I think it was a lot was challenging, especially
for those involved. But for me, probably being on the outside,
I tried not to read too much about it and
get into it. I was obviously there to support some
of the teammates and x players that I've played with.
Her record up on it, But for me, I just
think it's an exciting time for players to move on
from that and really showcase and competition and how talented

(04:10):
these players they actually are. I think the exciting thing
is also we've obviously lost some of our top players TOMSIGN,
but it's given young up and comers the opportunities to
be in these anti teams and there's some really exciting
talent coming through also.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Well, some of the teams have been ripped apart by
the mass migration. I suppose you'd say players over to
super Netball in Australia one of those teams. They're defending
champs and you're playing them first up up there in
christ Church and the coaches, your old mate Donna Wilkins
or Hagen as she was. This is a lovely situation,

(04:45):
isn't it the way this work's got so much going
for it.

Speaker 5 (04:47):
Yeah, we actually played each other's first game last year.
They got up five about seven on us. So it's
a really cool derby, the South Island Derby, and it's
something that's always been a really proud moment to play
in that game. So for us to have them first up,
I think exciting the championship. They run the championship last year.
As you mentioned, they definitely have lost some players, but

(05:09):
I know Donna and her she really well and they
would have been putting these players through their places. So
it is going to be a tough encounter, especially for
us away, you know, from our home court, but excited
about the challenge. We're lucky enough to play them a
couple of weeks ago, and you know, get a take
on that. I guess in preseason you can't take everything
out of those performances, but it was nice to play
that soul of metal and yeah, we're just really excited

(05:31):
to get up there and play against them on the
court will be rivers, and then after the game we'll
be hanging and having to catch up and seeing how
he runs. Families are and how LOVEE treating them.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
You say that style of netball if things changed to
we bit, Well.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
I think Donna's you know, she's such an experienced player,
and we're still learning the two point game, as kiwis,
we've only been playing it a year, but certainly different
ways that they attacked that and through attack and defense,
and we know Donna. Donna's kind of sole of that
position and keeping the ball in hand, So it's a
Robbie Borden thing gone down from her. So it's about

(06:05):
being creative trying to find ways to windball of them.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
How much all settled you and your team around that
new law, because watching over the first few exchanges, first
few rounds last year, it was almost like what are
we doing here? It were really hard to I suppose
bed that down. Do you think the teams are in
a better position now to run through this seamlessly?

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (06:26):
I think for us last year we probably didn't. You
take too many risks from the two point game. I
found a few games that were on catch up mode
and we had to hit some twos to get back
in the game, and then you miss those twos and
the other teams get ones, and it's a really dangerous
position to be in. But I feel like this year
we want to explore it or having more fun with it.
So I'm hoping, you know, second year round teams might

(06:48):
be a bit more creative with what they can put
out there, and you know, continue to put that good
spectacle of Nipple out there for all the law fans
that are going to be watching on TV or hopefully
in that stadium.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Head coach the Escott Park, Hotel, Southern that stare Windy
through joins us. How many changes have you had to endure?
And Donna's had, My team's been ripped apart, but you
you've only lost one major player or a couple. You're
not looking that too different from last year?

Speaker 5 (07:15):
Yeah, very similar. So obviously Kate's for losing her to
the Thunderbos was it is a big loss for us,
not just on the court, but the leadership and presence
off the court. But we managed to retain seven players
from last year, so I think that sets us up
pretty nicely in terms of you know, coming into this
year and knowing what those seven players were about and
trying to mold those news rates three players into the environment.

(07:36):
So yeah, it's all been it's all been pretty cool
and great opportunity to you know, try to showcase on
what we developed last year and what we what we
want to be better at this year.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sportsfix with Dancy Walter Grave.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
David Warner, one of the greats of Australian cricket, has
been charged with drink driving. David Dundumb, as he sometimes
gets called unfairly, I'm not sure I've never met the guy,
has made a horrendous error of judgment. And this is
what gets me about this particular error. Davy owns a

(08:15):
pile of money. Davy's not broke. Davy knows damn well
that if Davy gets arrested, in charged, Davy is going
to feel the full weight of the law upon him.
Will you'd hope So Davy could have avoided all of
this drama if he'd have made one simple decision no,

(08:35):
not to drink and drive, to simply drink and catch
a cab, catch an uber walk do something. It's not
like he can't afford to look after himself. He could
point at Tiger Woods and say exactly the same thing.
I don't have one ounce of sympathy for David Warner.

(08:56):
Apparently he saw the stop and he partners van up
and the police wandered on over to find out why
he stopped his car just before the checkpoint. Well, he
was twice legal driving limit. That's why he stopped his car.
I hope they make an example of this guy. If
they don't, there's something seriously wrong, albeit predictable, about the

(09:19):
judicial system in Australia. He should be made an example of.
He's a hero to a number of kids, to a
number of people for his antics with the bat. Does
that mean he's you get away scott free with one
of the dumbest decisions you could possibly make. No, it doesn't.
Throw the book at him, find him as much as

(09:39):
he can, hell, even put him in stocks and throw
rotting vegetables at him. He got called Davy dumb dumb
for reasons that might not be fair, but now we
can call him Davy dumb dumb with all the evidence
we need.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
The Chamber is now in session on sportsfix.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Well joined the chamber now by Alex Powell. Oh mate,
no Formula one to talk about, so we can't. I'm
really sorry about it. Alice Powell is a scribe for
the New Zealand Herald. Covers a number of sports and
you can say one line about the Formula one? Can
it be?

Speaker 3 (10:12):
Hi?

Speaker 2 (10:12):
How are you?

Speaker 6 (10:15):
Let's how you want done that?

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Before We've got all sorts of arguments up in this building,
of course, being news talks EB here and everything else
about the relevance of Trump and what he's doing. I
really don't care until he got in the way of
my Formula one and suddenly I've got a problem.

Speaker 6 (10:28):
But let's move on. He took it ten years.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, let's talk about let's talk about a store. Overnight,
we had a situation where the Warriors team got named.
We know they are looking down the barrel of a gun.
They really are up against a Melbourne team that i'd
suggest a little stressed after what Penrith did to them,
And they named a team and then today that team

(10:51):
was minus one because mister Pompey, they said, he actually
that you can't do what you did with the need
of their head. And that's two weeks off for it,
so the team needs to be readjusted again. What's your
little gut feeling about what's going to happen there?

Speaker 6 (11:04):
Well, this is kind of a classic in the Andrew
Ibbs to playbook, isn't it You name a team that
you've never any intention of playing? You know he's always
pulling the late switches.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
I wasn't that NRL in general, though, I mean Team
naming Tuesday or team list Tuesday is all about for
the newspapers or the magazines more than what's going to happen.

Speaker 6 (11:21):
Right, you get a one to sort of what is
it now? Twenty two, twenty three, But the reality is
they can change that until an hour before the game.
This Warriors team, I do worry a bit. You're right.
Adam Pompey has been named. We now know he's not
playing Charans Nicol Klockstad's been named at center. We know
that he's going to face a fitness test because he
what injured his neck against the Sharks. So you could

(11:43):
be looking at an entirely new center pairing. Kirk Capewell
would normally come in or has come in to play center,
he's not fit. Are they going to move like a ye,
But then how do you play on that edge? Do
you bring morgan Gannon in for his first start? Is
he ready? So I think there's a lot of questions
that will be asked about this team.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
Was a lot of good edge players in that Warrior's side, though,
they're just be given exposure. And we saw in the
last year a lot of players did get that exposure
and then at the start of the season, Oh wow,
so that exposure worked.

Speaker 6 (12:10):
Since fallham away, I think Andrew Weibbs has been very
good on this in regards to Lakala see. But there
is a big difference between a starting edge forward and
being a guy that comes off the bench for twenty
thirty minutes here or there. We've only just seen Lecker
be deemed ready to play it before eighty minutes. A
guy like Morgan Gannon, who we believe has a very

(12:30):
high ceiling, can be a very good player. But you're right,
there are holes in this team. Now all of a sudden,
you know, a couple of guys go down. We've not
even spoken about the halves pairing, you know. So, I mean,
would you play Chanelle Harris de Vita at center? I mean,
he can defend out there and then you move and
bring Luke Hanson into the halves. So I think we

(12:52):
are going to see a couple of changes to this
Warriors team by the time it actually kicks off against
the Storm, who let's not forget the Storm do look
a very beatable side this year. I know the Warriors
have lost what's seventeen in a row? Was eighteen? Will
this be the eighteenth? But they've lost what Ryan Pappenhausen's
retired from the sport. Elisa Katawa is not there to
coma camethe has just had a stroke, the poor fella.

(13:13):
So they are definitely gettable, but.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
They're not a team that should have been beaten by
They'd fifty put on them surely after what happened with
Peenrith Panthers. They just tore them shreds. That's even with
lack of players. The Storm aren't that bad, are they?

Speaker 4 (13:28):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (13:28):
Look, I don't want to be in Storm training this
week for the hiding that Craig Bellamy's going to give
them all. But I mean, you look at what Nathan
Clary did to them. You know, I think he's found
a new level. It's it's actually terrifying because he is
such a good player anyway could be the Warriors. But
he's now leading the Dali in chart after what five rounds?
He's never won the daim and you think, I mean

(13:50):
obviously being part of a team like that, you are
going to split votes as opposed to like a Kayleem
Pongo who won it a couple of years ago by
being the best player and the worst team. But you
look at how far the Pedmuth Panthers could go. They're
going to be hungry for not winning that five and
five last year. So what five out of six?

Speaker 2 (14:07):
We're not to talk about pemth because not paying them.
The Warriors are taking on Storm. It's not looking likely
both teams well pants. It's about who's going to recover
the best, right?

Speaker 6 (14:17):
I think Gun and Melbourne's going to be a bit
of a tricky time. The Warriors do not have a
good record over there. You remember Anzac a couple of
years ago that let in what eighty that was awful.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
I've conveniently exponged that. I don't mind. Is there is
there hope? It doesn't matter how you start, it's how
you finished. Leep saying that about the start of the season,
everyone's Cocker who said, wait till you get a couple
of injuries, Wait till a couple of suspensions, Wait till
the other teams start to actually gel and get some traction.
We're going to be able to judge these guys. If

(14:49):
they get into the eight. We take it from there.

Speaker 6 (14:51):
Yeah, momentum is a very real thing. And then rl
isn't it. You know? We saw the Warriors go three
from three to start the season and they would talk
of the town and now they've lost two games and
it feels like that was all a very long time ago,
you know. So, I mean they will, they'll they'll know
more than anyone what they need to do. They've had
two really poor results in a row. I think there
might have been a bit of complacency against the Tigers,

(15:11):
who are traditionally easy beats, and they look like they've
really turned the corner of the sheer for Benji Marshall's sake.
And then the Sharks they can do that. They've got,
you know, one through thirteen, they've got players that can
hurt here. And that's what happened.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
It's a shame with no Pompido, because he's been a
great player. He's been one of the few consistent namings
in the side for a very very long time. He
basically doesn't break. He's always there. But they can't need
people on the head, right, Hey, let's finish things off
with a start here go. Someone asked me this yesterday,
Oh shall we get blah blah blah on over the
weekend and the All Sport breakfast to talk about the netball?

(15:47):
And I went what netball? And they went the A
and Z Premiership? Oops? Is that the same with you?

Speaker 6 (15:55):
It does feel like it's crept up on us, doesn't it.
I mean, the clocks have a just gone back. But
you're right, there's there's been very little fanfare over the
A and Z Premiership. It feels like this competition is
now in a holding pattern until the long term feature
of what happens on both sides of the Tasman does
Are we now just waiting to see if Australia will
take New Zealand back? Are we going to get a

(16:16):
couple of New Zealand teams in their tournament? Because I mean,
for the good of the competition on both sides, I
feel like that is the right answer. Having that Kiwi
flavor in their competition bringing a new broadcast audience, because
let's not forget how well netball rates, especially on free
to wear, but for whatever reason, it's just not happened.
Australian Super Netball has now been awarded as influx of

(16:40):
Kiwi players who want to play at a higher level.
And why netballn New Zealand would not be seeking the
chance to let every New Zealand player play in it.
I mean, obviously we've then got the argument that we
had with cricket, where by condensing the opportunities, are you
actually hurting the sport? And you probably are that these
are decisions and discussions that need to be had.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
I think in defense of netball New Zealand, which is
kind of difficult thing. As much I love the sport,
never unconcerned, I'd say this about what's happening now. They
went through such a tumultuous time. Everything was shaken to
its core, from the management, the board, the players. They
really really had a tough time of it. So I

(17:21):
can understand why they want to breathe and make comment.
When you and just slowly walk into this premiership not
running at tooting horns and setting off streamers.

Speaker 6 (17:35):
I get you. But then the lack of promotion for
this competition. Like, let's not forget netball is one of
our major codes, it's our main code for women, and
we're just not seeing anything for the ANSI Premiership. I mean,
I know you've had trouble trying to get people from
Netbourne Zone to talk to you because they say they
want to give it a few weeks. It's like, well,
the competition starts this weekend.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
So maybe then what I see it. Then you look
back and go, well, did they learn anything from that time?
Maybe not?

Speaker 6 (18:04):
Wow, Like you need to be really brave to be
a sports administrator. And I think that's sort of been
the criticism of netborn Is on this last year, is
that if you pull up a sort of a fork
in the road, each time they've got a major decision
to make, they probably have gotten it wrong. Each time
they backed what a minority of players over Dame Nole

(18:25):
and Todo, and that led to the old fiasco there,
and then at corporate level they didn't front up when
they needed to, and then we've seen the CEO go,
we've seen the chair of the board go. So I
think there's just so much to sort out. And I
know if you look at it as a big picture.
The Anes and Premiership will be a small part of that,
but this is the main pathway to actually having girls

(18:46):
go from school into club into being professional netballers.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
And those ones right at the top, they are the
iconic characters. They are the ones that the young ones go,
I want to do that and they need that. And
I tell you what, Netball New Zealand, no comment is
not a comment.

Speaker 6 (19:01):
And that's the main thing here. We're talking about the
lack of promotion. If you can't if you can't see it,
you can't be it. Precisely seeing it averyone has and
it makes perfect sense. Alex pal thanks so much for
joining us here in the chamber beating of X.

Kingdom of Fraud

It’s the unlikeliest of criminal partnerships: a devout polygamist from an insular Utah sect joining forces with a shadowy Armenian tycoon from LA. The result - a billion dollar fraud conspiracy. In Kingdom of Fraud, investigative reporter Michele McPhee traces the origins of the extraordinary alliance between Jacob Kingston and Levon Termendzhyan. Together, the two men trigger the largest tax investigation in American history and weave around themselves a web of dirty cops, influential political relationships and transnational money laundering. All this is set against the backdrop of Jacob Kingston’s clan – The Order. A powerful and secretive polygamist organization in Salt Lake City. To whom Jacob is desperate to prove his worth.
