On Sports Fix with D'Arcy Waldegrave for 20 May 2026, Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has qualified for his 8th US Open by way of an exemption, as he is ranked within the top 60 golfers in the world. This means he'll be competing in all four major opens this season. Ryan joined D'Arcy to discuss.
D'Arcy shares his thoughts on the use of a final's series in the A -league and why they should follow in the footsteps of the English Premier League.
And D'Arcy and New Zealand Herald sports journalist Ben Francis discuss the Warriors team named last night and whether Fehi Fineanganofo should play for the All Blacks this year.

a weight off your shoulder, or is it.

Yeah, well, I mean us opens aren't necessarily that much fun.
And the last time it was at Shinnecock it was
damn hard. That was the one we fill at the
moving ball and no one shot under path of the week.
So yeah, there's a there's a little bit of me
that's a bit scared of the place. But it's yeah,
nice to be in it. I could have made it
a whole lot easier on myself the last few weeks

and played a bit better at Durrell and Charlotte and
and made it made it a bit easier. But it
was a reasonable enough week last week, and yeah, nice
to nice to lock my spot up and that you
was open.

Was that living rent free in your head? The top
sixty to qualify when you actually are cruising around the
greens that are on I mink was that in your head?
Speaker 5 (04:20):
Not at all? I mean I kind of The only
time I really looked at it was on Sunday, when
you know, I finished up, and obviously Sunday was was
a reasonable day for the most part, and you know,
kind of had a look. I knew there was a
couple of guys that were around the same place as
me and the world rankings, and I think, as my
(04:42):
caddy seat, as long as I beat them, or was
I run the same score as them, nothing bad was
going to happen in terms of that top sixty. And
I checked the leaderboard when I finished them, everything looked
hunky dory and that respect, And yeah, got the confirmation
obviously that Sunday night that I'd actually gone up a
world ranking place. So there was definitely nothing to worry about.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
So before we look ahead to what you're doing in
the next couple of weeks, just back to the US
Open again. You see, it's it's scary, it's miserable. From
a weekend hackers point of view. We love the US
Open because it is so hard and it makes you
pros look like weekend warriors like us.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
It's the great leveler, surely. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
I mean, look, the US Open is a golf tournament
where they want even part of win pretty much. I
mean they don't ever say it, but from how they
set up the courses most of the time, that's kind
of what it feels like. And you know, obviously there's
some guys that are pretty damn good out there and
generally it's like you know, early, you know, single digits
(05:44):
under par, maybe four or five something like that is
a pretty tough week on tour if that's what wins.
And my first US Open was at Shinnecock last time,
and it's kind of a different golf course. It's not
got the stupid long rough that you kind of associate
with US Open as the one that you're hacking it
out sideways out of. It is fairly generous off the

tea and then it just gets really really hard from there.
The greens of brutal the golf course will get really
firm and fast. There is if you're offline of the fairways.
There is some pretty bad stuff around. But I've got
some horror stories from last time, obviously, you know. The
famous one was Phil hitting the moving ball. I think
(06:28):
I saw one of my playing partners five part from
about twenty five feet. I putted one off the green
from thirty feet at one point, and I didn't think
I had a bad part at all. My playing partner
followed me with a twelve foot part that went off
the green and he made double. So yeah, there's some
memories of Shinnecock that Hopefully I don't have to relive
(06:50):
this time. I've heard the USGA has been listening to
the members and the staff at Shinnecock. The talk from
all the pros over the years is you could host
a US Open at Shinnecock basically any week of the
year outside of the middle of winter. Obviously up there
(07:12):
it's not very nice in the middle of winter, but
every other week it's in good enough condition to host
the US Open, and hopefully the us GA kind of
leave it like that instead of, you know, really trick
it out like they have done the last couple of times.
It's you know, they lost the greens. I think the
previous time as well. I think that might have been
four for memory. So I feel like this is probably
(07:38):
the last go for Shinnecock. If they stuff it up
this time, that Shinnecock won't want them back. But yeah,
it's it's an absolutely brutal golf course, but it would
probably be my top five golf courses I've played of
all time as well, So it is. It is very
very good, but very very hard.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Let's say you're a massacrest. Is that what you're telling us?
Speaker 5 (07:56):
Ah a little bit, Yeah, but it's it just requires
you to hit so many shots, and I think that's
the mark of a good golf course. It's got a
great variety of holes. Probably one of the hardest holes
on the golf courses the eleventh and it's like one
hundred and fifty yard path three, and if you hit
it in the wrong place, you're doing really really well
(08:17):
to make double basically, And it's yeah, it's just a great,
great golf course. And obviously when you get it in
the US Open conditions, it's kind of pushed to the
edge a little bit and that's why it's so hard.
But yeah, it's just a fantastic layout. From that. In
that respect, I'm looking forward to going back and seeing
it again.

Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's sportsfex with Darcy Waldegrave.

So Arsenal have done it for the first time in
twenty two years. The EPL crown is there's got it
done before the last weekend's action.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Deservedly so well.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Arsenal fans will say that anyway, it's been a long
time coming. In fact, three times runner up in the EPL,
it had to burst eventually, but that kind of consistency
is what you want from your team. I love the
purely because it's a proper league. I've talked about this before.
(09:14):
It still drives me in saying the A league is
not a league. It's basically a cup competition. It's not
weighted throughout the entire year. When the most successful team
right the way throughout every weekend, the one who scores
our most points ends up being crowned the champion. I
know we've got this fixation with quarterfinals and semi finals
(09:35):
and final finals, but it seems very fabricated, quite artificial,
especially if you're calling it a league. Now, the EPL,
the English Premier League, prides itself on being an actual league.
It has huge relevance and look short, sometimes what's the situation,
I tell you what the situation is. Sometimes the season
(09:57):
finishes well before the end of the season, so be it.
I'll take that hat just to see a proper team
winning at the end because they were the most successful
team throughout the season. Looks supercars have this issue too.
They implemented a new finals series. What happened by far
and away the best and most successful driver of the year,
(10:20):
brock Feenie a terrible last race. The last race of
the season and as a direct result, Chas most It
won his first Supercars championship. Look, I love Chess Moster,
but to me the dominant driver of the season was
brock Feeni and for the result of the championship to
(10:40):
be determined essentially on the results of one race manifestly unfair.
So long live the EPL, Long lived the league, long
may it carry on and long maybe be more fascinated
with who gets relegated than who actually wins the competition.

Well, I'll acknowledge some pie on the face, Darcy. I
was more leaning towards that he would to be starting.
I had a feeling that if he was going to feature,
it be in the twenty three or the extended squad,
I should say so. I guess when you look back
at the comments that Webster made after the Broncos game,
it's really not a surprise, but people probably felt that
might have been a bit of a bluff, you know.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Yeah, what the essence of that was he hasn't been training,
he doesn't know our moves. He's been he's had this
contract stuff in the back of is he not worth
the punt? So I suppose on mate, you'd think, but
he's not going to disappear forever. The bloke's going to
play for the rest of the season, surely. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Look, and I think what this might come down to
how well the likes of Tomadi Marsha and Chanell Harris
Va performed together. Because if they then start playing well,
if they have a blind of a performance against Dragons
this weekend. Then it's only going to create more headaches.
And Weiss got history because he did it with Boyd didn't, Yeah, exactly,
So we'll just have to wait and see. But I
think I think based on what we know, it feels

like that the Warriors, if they are to be that
contender that they have shown early on, you feel like
that have a better shot with Metcalf, even though his
sample size this year has not really produced great results.
But you'd suspect that with what he is capable of,
that the Warriors could go to that next level.

But you're paying him, right, I think you'd be crazy
not to play him out of spite.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
Yeah, well, I guess that's part of the thing that
I'd be very curious to know how Webs truly feels,
because I feel like there would be an element of
being disappointed that.

Oh no, now you're talking like your parents, Ben, we're
disappointed in you.

I mean, that does happen sometimes, and I get that
fear fairly regularly. But look, I think that's probably what
part of it is is. But look, I don't think
you can really t mighty came on hadn't only played
one Cup game reserves game since breaking his leg. He's
played that game at lock as well. So the fact
he comes on at half back, a position that after
six minutes, yeah exactly, and then just has a he

played really well. But I think the whole team collectively
played well, so overall, not surprised this week, I think
with the I look into the Panthers next week, though,
I will be very curious to see what happens there
and when.

It comes to backup at the moment, because there's a
couple of guys floating around, but we're not really one
hundred percent confident. I mean Jet Cleary not yet. Maybe handsome,
but that might be too much. So you'd think off
the bench, you've got to have somebody who can play
both of those roles six and seven.

Sure of that's Metca.

Yeah, And I think when you think, when you get
into the weeds of it, that Luke Hanson's more of
five eighth. Jake Clear is more than the half back,
but Luke Hanson is more head in his development and
being at the Warrior system a bit longer. And then
you've got Jay Lenane, who made us come back from
back to back A cl injuries and the reserve team
on the weekend, although he played at center, but he
looked very good at center, got plenty of speeds, so

there are a couple of options there. I think half
back will be the tricky one because now you do
have Tomighty and luc are the guys who are half back,
So one more goes down then you are going to
be looking pretty nervy.

There are more players, of course, and the wires up there.
It's great to see Roger tu Vasa. Sheck, he's in
the squad, not on the bench. But they changed things,
don't then the lead up. That's a great injection. Team's

row considering Jackson Ford is more a second roller, that's

the pack, but it was probably the making of him.

Yeah that when you do dig into some of the weeds,
it does sound like he is on a bit of
a restriction in terms of his low because he has
played big minutes this year for a front rowers. So look,
if he continues that form, there's there's no reason why
he couldn't be included in the game's two three. This
is just game one squad, so there's still plenty of
time for things to change.

going to have a lot of people that have always
kind of not necessarily against the Warriors, but have those
ones that say, well, if there's a time for the
Warriors to slip up, that will be this game. And
to be fair, you're probably not going to be wrong.
But there is something definitely different about this team this
year in terms of the way they're playing and just
everything about them just looks so much better. So I

think it would be a monumental shock if the Dragons
had come up with the win. But look, you never know.
That's sport, and that's the beauty of reality.

Yeah, the reality of sport. Now, I remember that.

but I think it is a very different team from
last year. Let's move on to rugby union discussion around

to wiggle out of his contract. Our engineer can't initiate that. Basically,

Isn't it about winning now or is it all about

I think had the injury to Kayla Tunguetowler not happened,
I probably would have said I think no, because he's
made that decision. But I feel like following after that injury,
you have to really consider it because the wing stocks.
I think at the moment there's so much inconsistencies with
that position in terms of guys that are stepping up

one week and then the week after that. I feel
like maybe if Kennina Holo has a good finish of
the season, he could probably play himself back into the mix.

Because Lea Rocada is coming back from injury as well,
so there we've got Caleb Clark around, so it's not
like these nobody just a little skinny.

Yeah, I think I think that's probably a good way
to sum it up. But there's also no one that's
really setting the world on fire other than Fear, So
I think I think you have to include them. And
I feel like if you obviously you see in New Zealand, right,
we can't make that decision, but if they were to say, look,
this is probably what we could do for you, then
maybe there could be some something happened there. And I
mean it's happened before, right, guys are backed out of

contracts and found one reason or another to get out
of it. So I feel like that with as I say,
with tonguey towel gone now, I feel like you do
need Fear here and he will bring that point into
ference and that expector that the all bags hopefully under
anyone need.

sixty to qualify when you actually are cruising around the
greens that are on I mink was that in your head?
Speaker 5 (04:20):
Not at all? I mean I kind of The only
time I really looked at it was on Sunday, when
you know, I finished up, and obviously Sunday was was
a reasonable day for the most part, and you know,
kind of had a look. I knew there was a
couple of guys that were around the same place as
me and the world rankings, and I think, as my
(04:42):
caddy seat, as long as I beat them, or was
I run the same score as them, nothing bad was
going to happen in terms of that top sixty. And
I checked the leaderboard when I finished them, everything looked
hunky dory and that respect, And yeah, got the confirmation
obviously that Sunday night that I'd actually gone up a
world ranking place. So there was definitely nothing to worry about.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
So before we look ahead to what you're doing in
the next couple of weeks, just back to the US
Open again. You see, it's it's scary, it's miserable. From
a weekend hackers point of view. We love the US
Open because it is so hard and it makes you
pros look like weekend warriors like us.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
It's the great leveler, surely. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
I mean, look, the US Open is a golf tournament
where they want even part of win pretty much. I
mean they don't ever say it, but from how they
set up the courses most of the time, that's kind
of what it feels like. And you know, obviously there's
some guys that are pretty damn good out there and
generally it's like you know, early, you know, single digits
(05:44):
under par, maybe four or five something like that is
a pretty tough week on tour if that's what wins.
And my first US Open was at Shinnecock last time,
and it's kind of a different golf course. It's not
got the stupid long rough that you kind of associate
with US Open as the one that you're hacking it
out sideways out of. It is fairly generous off the

tea and then it just gets really really hard from there.
The greens of brutal the golf course will get really
firm and fast. There is if you're offline of the fairways.
There is some pretty bad stuff around. But I've got
some horror stories from last time, obviously, you know. The
famous one was Phil hitting the moving ball. I think
(06:28):
I saw one of my playing partners five part from
about twenty five feet. I putted one off the green
from thirty feet at one point, and I didn't think
I had a bad part at all. My playing partner
followed me with a twelve foot part that went off
the green and he made double. So yeah, there's some
memories of Shinnecock that Hopefully I don't have to relive
(06:50):
this time. I've heard the USGA has been listening to
the members and the staff at Shinnecock. The talk from
all the pros over the years is you could host
a US Open at Shinnecock basically any week of the
year outside of the middle of winter. Obviously up there
(07:12):
it's not very nice in the middle of winter, but
every other week it's in good enough condition to host
the US Open, and hopefully the us GA kind of
leave it like that instead of, you know, really trick
it out like they have done the last couple of times.
It's you know, they lost the greens. I think the
previous time as well. I think that might have been
four for memory. So I feel like this is probably
(07:38):
the last go for Shinnecock. If they stuff it up
this time, that Shinnecock won't want them back. But yeah,
it's it's an absolutely brutal golf course, but it would
probably be my top five golf courses I've played of
all time as well, So it is. It is very
very good, but very very hard.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Let's say you're a massacrest. Is that what you're telling us?
Speaker 5 (07:56):
Ah a little bit, Yeah, but it's it just requires
you to hit so many shots, and I think that's
the mark of a good golf course. It's got a
great variety of holes. Probably one of the hardest holes
on the golf courses the eleventh and it's like one
hundred and fifty yard path three, and if you hit
it in the wrong place, you're doing really really well
(08:17):
to make double basically, And it's yeah, it's just a great,
great golf course. And obviously when you get it in
the US Open conditions, it's kind of pushed to the
edge a little bit and that's why it's so hard.
But yeah, it's just a fantastic layout. From that. In
that respect, I'm looking forward to going back and seeing
it again.

Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's sportsfex with Darcy Waldegrave.

So Arsenal have done it for the first time in
twenty two years. The EPL crown is there's got it
done before the last weekend's action.

Deservedly so well.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Arsenal fans will say that anyway, it's been a long
time coming. In fact, three times runner up in the EPL,
it had to burst eventually, but that kind of consistency
is what you want from your team. I love the
purely because it's a proper league. I've talked about this before.

It still drives me in saying the A league is
not a league. It's basically a cup competition. It's not
weighted throughout the entire year. When the most successful team
right the way throughout every weekend, the one who scores
our most points ends up being crowned the champion. I
know we've got this fixation with quarterfinals and semi finals

and final finals, but it seems very fabricated, quite artificial,
especially if you're calling it a league. Now, the EPL,
the English Premier League, prides itself on being an actual league.
It has huge relevance and look short, sometimes what's the situation,
I tell you what the situation is. Sometimes the season

finishes well before the end of the season, so be it.
I'll take that hat just to see a proper team
winning at the end because they were the most successful
team throughout the season. Looks supercars have this issue too.
They implemented a new finals series. What happened by far
and away the best and most successful driver of the year,

brock Feenie a terrible last race. The last race of
the season and as a direct result, Chas most It
won his first Supercars championship. Look, I love Chess Moster,
but to me the dominant driver of the season was
brock Feeni and for the result of the championship to
(10:40):
be determined essentially on the results of one race manifestly unfair.
So long live the EPL, Long lived the league, long
may it carry on and long maybe be more fascinated
with who gets relegated than who actually wins the competition.

at the comments that Webster made after the Broncos game,
it's really not a surprise, but people probably felt that
might have been a bit of a bluff, you know.

Yeah, what the essence of that was he hasn't been training,
he doesn't know our moves. He's been he's had this
contract stuff in the back of is he not worth
the punt? So I suppose on mate, you'd think, but
he's not going to disappear forever. The bloke's going to
play for the rest of the season, surely. Yeah.

Look, and I think what this might come down to
how well the likes of Tomadi Marsha and Chanell Harris
Va performed together. Because if they then start playing well,
if they have a blind of a performance against Dragons
this weekend. Then it's only going to create more headaches.
And Weiss got history because he did it with Boyd didn't, Yeah, exactly,
So we'll just have to wait and see. But I
think I think based on what we know, it feels

like that the Warriors, if they are to be that
contender that they have shown early on, you feel like
that have a better shot with Metcalf, even though his
sample size this year has not really produced great results.
But you'd suspect that with what he is capable of,
that the Warriors could go to that next level.

But you're paying him, right, I think you'd be crazy
not to play him out of spite.

Yeah, well, I guess that's part of the thing that
I'd be very curious to know how Webs truly feels,
because I feel like there would be an element of
being disappointed that.

Oh no, now you're talking like your parents, Ben, we're
disappointed in you.

I mean, that does happen sometimes, and I get that
fear fairly regularly. But look, I think that's probably what
part of it is is. But look, I don't think
you can really t mighty came on hadn't only played
one Cup game reserves game since breaking his leg. He's
played that game at lock as well. So the fact
he comes on at half back, a position that after
six minutes, yeah exactly, and then just has a he

played really well. But I think the whole team collectively
played well, so overall, not surprised this week, I think
with the I look into the Panthers next week, though,
I will be very curious to see what happens there
and when.

It comes to backup at the moment, because there's a
couple of guys floating around, but we're not really one
hundred percent confident. I mean Jet Cleary not yet. Maybe handsome,
but that might be too much. So you'd think off
the bench, you've got to have somebody who can play
both of those roles six and seven.

Sure of that's Metca.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
Yeah, And I think when you think, when you get
into the weeds of it, that Luke Hanson's more of
five eighth. Jake Clear is more than the half back,
but Luke Hanson is more head in his development and
being at the Warrior system a bit longer. And then
you've got Jay Lenane, who made us come back from
back to back A cl injuries and the reserve team
on the weekend, although he played at center, but he
looked very good at center, got plenty of speeds, so

there are a couple of options there. I think half
back will be the tricky one because now you do
have Tomighty and luc are the guys who are half back,
So one more goes down then you are going to
be looking pretty nervy.

There are more players, of course, and the wires up there.
It's great to see Roger tu Vasa. Sheck, he's in
the squad, not on the bench. But they changed things,
don't then the lead up. That's a great injection. Team's
looking pretty solid, except for those pesky swine over in

pleased that Laurie Daly has lost his mind and we've

Well, I think I think you can obviously say he
lost his mind when he announced Casey maguire to join
the New South Wales Boys. Probably one of the that was.

A mistake ladies in New him and Casey McGuire is
well retired.

Yeah, and he played, and he's a queens Land representative
which made it even more funny. But Casey McLain, the
guy who plays with the Kiweezers and the team. But
that was one of the most iconic moments. But it
is a bizarre one, especially when he gave the reasoning
about I needed a guy that could played the second
row considering Jackson Ford is more a second roller, that's
what he does.

We're like, what are you doing? Playing it prop in
the pack, but it was probably the making of him.

Yeah that when you do dig into some of the weeds,
it does sound like he is on a bit of
a restriction in terms of his low because he has
played big minutes this year for a front rowers. So look,
if he continues that form, there's there's no reason why
he couldn't be included in the game's two three. This
is just game one squad, so there's still plenty of
time for things to change.

And I personally I like having him here. I don't
want him going over to origin Land.

And I'm a Queensland fan too, So let's just put
it down nice and straight. It chances up against the Dragons.
It's going to be tough one this well.

I mean they are a team that's on a fourteen
game losing streact dating back to season.

But we had last night on the program format Warriors coach.
He's an absolute good bugger and he came out to
Matthew Elliott and see, looks too much of a distraction.
They need to be fully focused on this because it
is the NRL and things might fall apart if you
give them half a chance.

But really the Dragons.

Well that's kind of the thing though, Darcy, But you're
going to have a lot of people that have always
kind of not necessarily against the Warriors, but have those
ones that say, well, if there's a time for the
Warriors to slip up, that will be this game. And
to be fair, you're probably not going to be wrong.
But there is something definitely different about this team this
year in terms of the way they're playing and just
everything about them just looks so much better. So I

think it would be a monumental shock if the Dragons
had come up with the win. But look, you never know.
That's sport, and that's the beauty of reality.

Yeah, the reality of sport. Now, I remember that.

They fall over the Titans when they're supposed to win,
but I think it is a very different team from
last year. Let's move on to rugby union discussion around
Fehi Fenniang and off who is the form wing of
the Super Rugby competition. He's off to Newcastle. The question
here we want to win, right, He's not gonna be

at the World Cup unless, of course, somehow he manages
to wiggle out of his contract. Our engineer can't initiate that. Basically,
feihe has to initiate that. Then maybe it'll happen. But
don't you take him to South Africa because he's so good.
Isn't it about winning now or is it all about
next year and building strength?

I think had the injury to Kayla Tunguetowler not happened,
I probably would have said I think no, because he's
made that decision. But I feel like following after that injury,
you have to really consider it because the wing stocks.
I think at the moment there's so much inconsistencies with
that position in terms of guys that are stepping up

one week and then the week after that. I feel
like maybe if Kennina Holo has a good finish of
the season, he could probably play himself back into the mix.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
Because Lea Rocada is coming back from injury as well,
so there we've got Caleb Clark around, so it's not
like these nobody just a little skinny.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
Yeah, I think I think that's probably a good way
to sum it up. But there's also no one that's
really setting the world on fire other than Fear, So
I think I think you have to include them. And
I feel like if you obviously you see in New Zealand, right,
we can't make that decision, but if they were to say, look,
this is probably what we could do for you, then
maybe there could be some something happened there. And I
mean it's happened before, right, guys are backed out of

contracts and found one reason or another to get out
of it. So I feel like that with as I say,
with tonguey towel gone now, I feel like you do
need Fear here and he will bring that point into
ference and that expector that the all bags hopefully under
anyone need.
