Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hello there, welcome on into the Sports Fix podcast.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
My name is Darcy Walder Grave. He needs no in
the Wonderful White World or Sport Today. Today being Wednesday,
the twenty first of January twenty twenty six of right
up in front of you. Coming up on today's podcast,
I'll be having a yarn with Nima Soppewanga, former All
Black joins us to talk about Jamie Joseph. Widen thought
that Jamie will be the next All Black coach. Lima
(00:46):
has spent plenty of time under the guidance of Jamie Joseph.
Will dig deep into that shortly. I've got a few
thoughts around the ridiculous nature of sporting awards ceremonies. No
surprise from me there, and we'll be joined in the
chamber by the Director of Sport for News Talks HEB
mister Clay Wilson. That's our master plan. Thanks very much, GJ.
(01:07):
Gardner Homes and Zealand's most trusted home builder for your
continued support.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Of this podcast, right, let's do it.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
In today's Super Sports that strikes black Cat Head coach
Rob Walter has assured the players not selected for the
T twenty World Cup but are currently in the Indian
series squad shouldn't be downcast. It's all part of the
international cricket process which we're always told to trust. All right,
(01:37):
Tim Robinson and Bevan Jacobs are in that mix.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
In first and foremost. You've got to kick any opportunity
in India, just like one day, he guys just experiences.
It's your needs, a part of the ticketing experience, you know,
as you grow up as you said, and he look
forward to and dream about them.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
That that doesn't change The women's Black Stacks, Aside start
a four team a tournament tonight in Dunedin. Coach Phil
Burrows wants to keep the charge going after they beat
the Australians two to one in a series last year
to qualify for this year's World Cup.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
We haven't been together for a while and one of
the messes we don't want to kind of take it
backward step from.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Dale or Darlin is taught to be like a wake
up call. So China slide back into the National Hockey
as best we can. New Zealand, A and Japan are
also competing in the full Way series and it's all
gone nashy shape for Manchester City, stumbling to their second
loss in four days. Manager of Pep Guardiola is a
little well confused.
Speaker 6 (02:37):
We'll see what happened to her was the incroll opportunity
for us.
Speaker 5 (02:40):
But the feeling that he's gotten wrong is going in
Deno games in many, many details and that this effect
and actual take the change.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
And said it, taped it, played it in Sport Today.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
News and Opinion.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
It's Sportsfix with Dancie Valdegreve.
Speaker 5 (02:56):
That's a war.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Welcome to Lima Sopewanga, former All Black first five eighth
and man who spent plenty of time playing under Jamie Joseph.
Speaker 6 (03:06):
He joins us.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Now, I hope you've had our fantastic break over the
Christmas period and you're ready to hit the ground running. Boss.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (03:13):
I've had a wonderful period, mate, but too much rain
for my liking back in this New Zealand summer. I
waited eight years for a New Zealand summer and I've
got an sweet jack all from it. But it's been
great been around family, good food, good company, So can't
really complain.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Family and food. Mate, That's all you need, no doubt.
I've got you on here because it's looking like the
only choice, the only option that New Zealand Rugby have
got to appoint this new all black coach is going
to be Jamie Joseph. I believe that's the only way
they can possibly go. Do you agree?
Speaker 6 (03:48):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (03:48):
I think who else is out there who's probably willing
to take this job head on and someone who's probably
not afraid of what anybody thinks, and who backs himself
with the utmost conviction. It's probably Jamie Joseph in in
my opinion, there's probably no one else who is willing
(04:09):
to walk into this into this fire, and we all
know it's a fire right now. It's a massive pressure
cooker for whoever takes that job. But I think Jamie
Joe is probably the guy that maybe should have had
this job two years ago, but it's here now and
I don't know if he's going to get it, but
if he does get it, he probably takes this challenge
(04:29):
on like he did his rugby career, like he's done,
always takes it full on and he'll run into it
and we'll see how it goes.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
I think it'll happen, but we don't know for sure.
But you're a guy who knows the way Jamie Joseph operates. Now,
you were involved with him way back in the early days,
weren't you. You are first pro contract was under Jamie
Joseph for the Wellington Lions.
Speaker 6 (04:54):
Yep, sure was. Obviously that was a very long time ago,
like twenty ten.
Speaker 7 (04:59):
So between now and what twenty twenty six, he would
have grown in so many different ways, I'm sure, and
he would have learned a lot, failed a lot, and
the way he coaches now probably isn't reflective of what
he was back then. But you know, deep down, he's
still a pretty tough head coach, i'd say, and that's
been his backbone and to be make sure the teams
(05:22):
that he coaches are tough and they're ready and they
don't take a backward step, because that's what he was
like as a player. So yeah, I think he is
someone that is, you know, like right up for this
job and could take this job.
Speaker 6 (05:34):
He'd on.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
So you worked with him at the lines, then you
ended up spending a long time under his command. In fact,
you had a hell of a time, didn't he. The
Highlanders scored the most points in franchise history. But you
played under him and through some bad times, but through
some good times as well at twenty thirteen, and then
of course the title in twenty fifteen, which is the highlight.
(05:57):
What did you glean from that time with Jamie? How
would you reflect on what he did at the height
of his career when he was winning stuff like that,
even though it was a good ten years ago.
Speaker 7 (06:06):
Okay, she was real character building stuff, some of the
stuff he'd made us do, and I'm not too sure
those kind of practices would be allowed in today's professional environments.
There was no GPS back then.
Speaker 6 (06:22):
And there was no.
Speaker 7 (06:25):
Thought for or regard for how much she was maybe
overcooking us, but there was method to the madness, and
eventually that madness paid off in twenty fifteen. But like
you said, there was a big failure there in twenty
thirty where we had brought all the superstars in and
we ended up.
Speaker 6 (06:42):
Going ZERI from eight in our first eight games.
Speaker 7 (06:44):
Didn't want a game, and our season was done halfway through,
you know, And I think to be able to come
back from that and turn it around and take the
lessons and bring in new coaches and people who were
better equipped for certain situations.
Speaker 6 (06:59):
Shows that he was willing to change.
Speaker 7 (07:01):
And you know, obviously that's a long time ago now,
that's you know, over ten years. But I think all
the experience and all the time coaching over sees and
what he's learned, and all he's coach worth, or who's
had as his managers, or all the different types of
players probably make him the right guy for the job now,
especially because it's so sensitive and it's it is a
(07:22):
big ask.
Speaker 6 (07:23):
You know, you've only got two years to get ready.
Speaker 7 (07:25):
But he's probably someone who could assemble a good enough
coaching staff to get the best and most out of
the talent that we've got and take us forward into
that World Cup.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's sportsfex with Dancy Waldegrave.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
I've never been a huge fan of a Hallberg Awards.
I don't think you compare apples with oranges, with kansaloops
whatever when it comes to sporting achievement. But it is
a time to raise money for charity, and it also
is a time for athletes to get together and celebrate
all the hard work they've done. Now we've got no
control over the finalists, We've got no control over the winners.
(08:06):
But what New Zealanders do have control over is this segment.
It is the only publicly voted category. It is New
Zealand's favorite sporting moment. Seems like a bit of a
stretch to suggest that the public could actually be involved
in something like this, but I think it's needed. There
are twelve different nominations and they cover the old gamut
(08:28):
of sporting joy for the fans. Over the previous twelve months,
You've got Sam Ruth becoming the youngest person in history
of break the foreman at mile Barrier, Luke Harold the
world's first triple court rotation in a free ski half
pike competition, Auckland FC lifting the premiership plate, Ryan Fox
(08:48):
chipping in a sensational playoff, Berdie to claim his Ryan
Fox chipping a sensational playoff, Birdie to claim his maiden
PGA two of victory, Ardie Savi or the match selling
turnover the final moments handing Mona Pussifka their historic first
ever win over the Blues. Hayden Wild with a stunning
(09:09):
comeback in the T one hundred in London, overcoming injury
to chase down Rico Bogan and the bike for the win.
Porsia woman wicklif becomes New Zealand's all time top try
scorer after being tripped and stepped on and qualifying. Jordy
Beamish makes the final and wins goal. Just two days
later in the steeple chase, Tamus Kerr, the high jumper, wins.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
An elusive world title.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Ronnie Clark secretly sang the national anthem, and Eden Parker's
son Caleb Cride Grace Wekas public shelf support for Silver
Ferns coach Dame Noling, Todua, Matt Payne conquering Mount Panorama
and Torrential Rain to claim bath Furst one thousand back
in October. And if it's worth anything my opinion is
(09:52):
this my favorite sporting moment out of those twelve nominated
over twenty twenty five is Ardie Savia's Matt Selling turnover.
In fact, the entire eighty minutes could be counted as
a favorite sporting moment for me. What a performance. I
don't think we're ever going to see anyone as dominant
(10:13):
and super rugby as that again.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
The chamber doors fly open and standing there waiting to
come in. I actually opened the door before you even
manage to knock. Clay Wilson is the boss man News
Talk ZEBB Sports Director, having new year and welcome to
the show.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
Its same to you to ask her to be back
for twenty twenty six.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
It's good, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Take a tiny break and suddenly it's like, Wow, I
really love what I do and I need to be
back here. Or is that am I making stuff up again? No?
Speaker 5 (10:41):
No, you're right.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
What is it?
Speaker 5 (10:42):
The twenty first of January. We're almost at the end
of the first month of the year, and that is
just click your fingers fly on.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
And so much going on this year too, so much
to look forward to. Hey, let's not talk about Scott Robinson.
Let's let's talk about Cracker and let's talk a weebit
on rugby too, because the French have done it all
over again. But tonight the first of five T twenty
eyes up against the Indians for the black Caps. This
is key now. They've had terrible build ups for World
(11:11):
Cup tournaments before, learned lessons from the previous mistakes. Is
there a better build up do you think for this
World Cup?
Speaker 7 (11:19):
No?
Speaker 5 (11:19):
I mean we kind of talked about how the ODII series,
which turned into a big achievement for the black Caps,
was a weird kind of adding them to these T
twenties or at a precursor to these TA twenties. But
if you're playing at a World Cup in the subcontinent,
mostly in India, could you ask for more than five
(11:41):
matches to prepare yourself against the hosts in that country,
especially in a place like India, which is obviously notoriously
so difficult to do well in for the non subcontinent teams.
So yeah, they obviously managed to snag it a while back.
And it's just perfect, doesn't it, especially when you look
off the back of the ode being able to play
(12:02):
the Odie eyes do so well to be able to
continue that momentum. Look, it's five games, It could be
a bit all over the shot, But.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
I'm amazing the Indians agreed to do this because we've
basically embarrassed them of recent times, you know, beat them
in the Test Championship final and then managed to beat
them threes up at home in the Test. Now we've
just done this.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
They're still doing his favors.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
I've got to applaud them for that.
Speaker 5 (12:22):
Right, Well, maybe they're just out for a bit of
they're committed to a bit of revenge or something. You're
trying to trying to prove they are the better team
in India. And look, let's not bet around the bush.
India are still a very formidable team at home. And
I think for the black Caps, they look at this
and say, you know, you don't expect to go out
and win five nil or maybe even four to one.
(12:45):
But if you can snag a couple of wins and
build yourself up to this World Cup by giving everyone
a run and doing what they want to do, getting
players adapted to conditions in the shortest format.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Result based. It's about collecting experience in those conditions more
than anything, because no one will remember what the results
are of this. They will remember what happens in the
T twenty nine World Cup. So aim for a win,
but gain experience, glean information. That is key, especially for
i'd say some of the younger guys, because here's not
very many young guys in this team. It's a pretty
(13:19):
good looking team.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Yeah, and look That's the beauty of five matches is
I think you can balance it between you know, wanting
to win some games and maintain that feeling they've picked
up from winning that ODI series. You know, you probably
want to win a couple of these games just so
you don't go in having lost a series five nol
H four to one. But yes, five games allows you
a bit of freedom to say, you know, let's give
(13:42):
this this person a run, Let's give this person a
shot at this place in the batting order, those kind
of things that you're looking at for the World Cup.
And Rob Walter, you know, listening to him speak yesterday,
seems pretty set on what they are able to do
in terms of team lineup in the various conditions. So
this is just going to solidify that and allow perhaps
some minor tweaks for them. Hopefully anyway that results show
(14:04):
that they're very much on the right track and ready
for this World Cup.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Hopefully Finnellen gets over after the Big Beast from maybe one,
maybe two games out of stretch, it'd be needed. I'll
tell you what. That top six is looking phenomenal. If
they all hit their form at the same time, Finn
Key possibly his World Cup.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
Yeah, and look, I mean, what do you say about
the success of finale in terms of the World Cup,
because it means he stays in Australia. He's in great form.
You want you want to see that continue. But obviously
you know, playing in Perth or playing in Australia is
a bit different to playing in Indian conditions. Not that
he's not familiar, he hasn't been there before. But it
(14:42):
will be great if he is able to sneak in one,
perhaps two games at the back end of the series
to lead into the World Cup, just so he gets
familiar with the conditions again and then hopefully he's able
to replicate what he's doing in the big besh currently
come this World Cup because if he can, I mean
T twenty is a game where one man, one player
can make a big difference.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
Thirty seven six is so far and that's phenomenal.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
And if he can do that in three games could
be the difference between the black Caps getting to a
final law being knocked out in the group stages. So
the fingers crossed he can keep it going strong.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
New Zealand team Klay Wilson off to the World Cup.
A week French team coming over the start of the
Nation's championship. We're talking rugby. It's looking like France the
top fourteen, they are ruling the roost. They are more
important the top fourteen than international rugby. But a surprise, no.
Speaker 5 (15:35):
I mean, of course we saw this last year, didn't
we with the weekend side they sent out here for
the three Test match series, which in the end they
pushed the All Blacks pretty hard across those three games.
But I think the biggest thing to note here is
this is repeating. But this isn't just any old game.
This is the start of the Nation's championship for the
All Blacks at least anyway, So you know, kind of
(15:57):
a funny way to start a big, new, fancy competition
with the French again sending a week in team. But
this is the nature of some of Theseuropean competitions and
the power they wheeled because the Nation's Championship, these July
tests always are going to butt up against the end
of the French top fourteen competition. Those top fourteen clubs
(16:19):
have a lot of money and a lot of you know,
a lot of power. So they pretty much said the
same thing again. They've had to come to an agreement
with the French Rugby Union. And I guess from an
All Black perspective, you say, well, it increases your chances
have started the nation's championship. Well, but most of us,
I'm sure would want to see.
Speaker 6 (16:37):
Isn't it.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
The fans would love to see that first out might
be great And it's not like all the best players.
It's just the two teams involved in the final, wasn't it.
So there's still be some sharp players. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
And of course they like we've already said, they pushed
the All Blacks, didn't they in twenty twenty five, despite
who they sent out here. And I mean, let's be frank,
the All Blacks are going to come into this match
not exactly you know, flying high and feeling you know,
amazing about themselves. Of course, recent events will tell you
that there's a bit of work to be done between
now and then. So yeah, could very well be a
(17:11):
close game anyway. But yeah, I think in an ideal world,
you do, we want to see for all our major rivals.
We want to see the best teams coming up and
putting the All Blacks, you know, right under pressure and
giving them a really good challenge.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
And on that note, we'll get out of the chamber.
