The All Blacks got the Dave Rennie era off to a strong start as they beat the French 34-32 at One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch in what also served as the opening round of the inaugural Nations Championship.
They are set to take on Italy this weekend at Hnry Stadium in Wellington with the squad being named for that fixture earlier this afternoon.
Brodie Retallick is a former All Black, he joined D'Arcy to discuss the forward pack selected.

He's still boasting about that. Are you made?

Yeah, that's definitely been quite cool. Obviously a few people
within New Zealand they've watched it or kip nine it
and may mention of it when I bumped to some
down the street. But you know, it was awesome to
win it over there and get done and now time
to put the feet up a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Great way to set Dave Renieff on this new career
of his, knowing that he's got that winning ingredient. I
suppose that begs the question how much pestering did you
get from him about coming back to the All Black
camp again?
Speaker 3 (02:10):
It was the first. It was great to see them off,
you know when he came to the club. We finished
fifth and then we went third and then obviously won it.
So it was great to see him off in the
right way. And yeah, the first time he did I
think he did a press conference with the New Zealand
he said, oh, sorry, I chucked your name out there
with it, but I just wanted to get them talking,
so I said, no worries, but yeah, who knows, We'll
see what happened in the future. I suppose they They

went pretty well to start off last week though, I thought,
especially the full pack they did.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Let us look at the forward pack your area of expertise.
There's been a couple of changes in there, and one
of those is to provide He's coming in in the
five a jumper and this guy is magnificent, gets better
and better and better. He's looking to be the premiere lock,
isn't he in that side? So great to see him
back on board again.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah, it's great to see Toots back out there. I
think it was Cushion he was out with last week,
which is a shame, but it's good to see him
out there. And I thought also Sam Dowry played really
well last week. Now it's not easy for preparing for test
matchally alone, only having a week and a half for
them to prepare, So I thought it and all they
performed pretty well and it's great to see them playing
with the real optimism, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
That's the phrase that he's using all of the time,
and it's running rampant. Did he use that in Japan optimism?
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
I mean he's used that word and since he came
to the Chiefs when I went there in twenty twelve,
and obviously he went away to Europe and came back
to Japan, but he still wants to play that expensive
style of footy. And like you say, it's got everybody
talking about how exciting is to see the All Blacks
plane attacking footy again, and you know, I think it's
people behind them.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
It is. I like brutal optimism. I'll just add something
to that because they've got the ability to have that
brutal side of their game, which was a hallmark, wasn't
it of All Black rugby for say long so long.
I mean you were quite brute out there when you're
at your heyday. It's part of the physical domination. Surely
that's part of what this team do.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Yeah, I think that goes hand in hand with Rens
and the way he likes to play with optimism. I
think you know you saw Luke Jackson start at seven
and he runs for all physicality along with the others.
And you know, when you've got a four pack that's
going forward and could be brutal and physical and then
also playing with speed and skill. That's the type of
game plan that rencites to play and it's hard to
stop when they get it right.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Well, a Satisi comes into the site as well at
a blind side Peter likeit not there, but again another
absolute brute of a human.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Yeah, I think you know you saw you saw at
the end of the chief season, the Super Rugby season,
how well he's playing for the Chiefs and he's got
all the attributes done there in terms of physicality and
skill sets and speed. So yeah, I'm looking forward to
seeing how he goes and getting the start this week.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Pretty exciting in the pack for a bloke called Anton
Segna Crazy Jenny. We all know about that, coming all
the way from Germany to try and become an All
Black and he's going to become an All Black all
things going well and good named on the bench, he's
had a stunning year. What do you make of what
he provides?
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Brodie, Yeah, it's awesome. I think it's you know, it's
a story a bit like Fabian Holland, isn't it. We've
got guys as teenagers or kids coming to New Zealand
with a dream to play the All Blacks and to
see them fulfillip. You know that's what sports all about,
I suppose, inspiring the next generation. So yeah, hopefully it
gets gets out there this weekend and it will be
another awesome story to add to the All Black jersey.
(05:25):
But you know, I didn't watch a whole lot of
the Blues across Super Rugby, but from what I saw,
like in terms of breakdown and he's an absolute menace
in their slowing ball and getting his hands in terms
of jackling and carry the ball pretty well as well.
So I think it adds another dynamic in terms of
loose wall players. Now you've got Wallace on one side
and potentially him on the other side of the scrum.
It's two pretty handy loose forwards, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Did you play last time the Italians played the All Blacks?
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Was it a few years ago?
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Year around yeah, I was.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
We know, we played them on my last end of
year tour. I didn't actually play us in the stands
of Dane Coles, but I was there and we struggled
to beat them. Actually we didn't win in the end,
but that was a game. We're probably going that five
years ago.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
We don't take these team very seriously, but if you
look back at six nations, they can actually pull one
out of the bag. I think the All Blacks are
the only major nation they haven't had a win so against.
You wouldn't take them too lightly, would you? At your peril?
Speaker 3 (06:25):
No, I think they know all all teams and especially
European teams, like you know, they beat the All Blacks.
It's almost this season made and they'll probably be, no
doubt disappointing about disappointed with the way they played last weekend.
So yeah, i'd say if I was there, and they'll
be coming here to throw everything at it and try
and upset the All Blacks in New Zealand.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
What did you learn predominantly out of that first up
run this new version of the All Blacks under Dave
Renny bits and pieces. There were some gaping gaps, but
it's always going to happen in the first game of
the season for the All Blacks under a new coach,
But in general positive, you like what you've seen?
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Yeah, I thought it was pretty It was a pass mark,
that's for sure. I think in terms of trying to
prepare for a test match, learning new defensive systems and
new attack and the new coaches, it's not easy and
they didn't have much time to do that. But I
think you know one under the belt, that's for sure
and will definitely help them this week and see them improve.
I'd say, especially defensively that get that a bit better,
(07:23):
just a few one on one tackles. But you know,
I like we touched on. I think the optimism and
the attacking rugby is what we think of all back
rugby and it's awesome to see them playing that now.
A little bit of a shaky start with the yellow card, etc.
But the way they bounced back and held some composure,
I thought that showed a lot about the team.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
And last but not least, Brady Retellic Addie Savia finally
got the role everyone wants them to have. He's the captain.
He's played non stop for the last eighteen months. People
thought he'd get a cup of team a lie down,
but no, not Ardie. What do you make of the
fact that he is the captain and his leadership on
the park?
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Yeah, I think it's awesome. Obviously. I've played with Ardi
for a while in New Zealand in the last year
over in Japan, and he's a leader that in his
own way. He doesn't say a lot, but his actions
speak louder than his words, especially on the field. And
you know, I think the most important part was almost
when he does speak, people listen, and he's been on
the money. So yeah, I think that's awesome. And I'm

stoked that he got handed the captain cy and you know,
wishing him all the best, that's for sure.
