Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancie Wildegrave
from News Talks'd be.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Demolition in Super Bowl fifty nine.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
For Vert's look at a throw on first down, it's
a downfield Shine touchdown. Don Tay Smith there because your
knockout Tons Phillip Towns.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
The Philadelphia Eagles have been in the Kansas City Chiefs
forty twenty two to win their second Super Bowl. That
scoreline doesn't look like a blowout, but Philly led forty
points to six before a couple of late touchdowns for
Kansas City squeezed the winning margin up just a little.
Brit Let's bring an NFL writer covering the Philadelphia Eagles,

(00:48):
Chris Franklin, who stayed up late for us in Philadelphia
to have a chat. Thanks for doing so, Chris. First
of all, did you ever, in your wildest dreams expect
such a one sided game?

Speaker 3 (01:00):
I never thought that was going to happen. In fact,
I thought it was going to be one of those
games where it comes down to the fourth quarter and
you're holding your breath trying to see who's going to
win this game. I mean the way that they demolitions
put it nicely, the way that they controlled the line
of scrimmage, the way they put pressure and made Patrick
Mahomes like somebody else. That was crazy And you got

(01:21):
to give a lot of crutch to Nick Sirianni, but
Vic Vandrio with that defense, it's crazy how well they did.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Were the Eagles really really good, were the Chiefs really
really bad? Or was it a combination of those two things.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
I think it was a both because I look at
it when I look at it, and we look look
at that when you look at it received the Chief's
receiving corps. I mean, it showed up Blake with Xavier
Warrior worthy with those touchdowns. But when you look at it,
something just seemed off in terms of Travis Kelcey and
Patrick Mahomes in these in the last throughout the playoffs.
It wasn't until last week where you start to see
them emerge a little bit. Now you look at that

(01:55):
the Eagles secondary. And it's funny that we talk about
this defense because heading into the season, you would have
thought if the Eagles weren't able to get Super Bowl,
that's that defense was playing halfway average. And now you
look like, wait a minute, they were in the best
defense in the league. It's crazy, but I think, yeah,
I think there was. Some of the Chiefs deficiencies really
showed themselves, and Vic Vangel was able to exploit them.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
I do want to talk about the Eagles, but just
on Patrick Mahomes. Stop him and you go along. Why
they're stopping the Chiefs obviously, but a game to forget
a couple of interceptions, including one that was returned for
a touchdown. He was strip sacked early in the fourth quarter.
How did the Eagles so efficiently limit the effectiveness of
Patrick Mahomes.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
It was It was disciplined. That's That's what the biggest
thing was. Because a lot of times when you see
your defensive lineman, your eyes light up big, like oh
I can get to him, and you're thinking like okay,
and we see them through that reverse pivot and make
these plays behind the backs or have you. I think
what the Eagles did, and they did very well, was
they got the pressure with the four people by themselves,

(02:57):
and they were very disciplined in their rushes, so they
didn't let him get out of the pocket too many times,
so they snared him in there. It almost like a
vice that just worked of all four guys getting in
the pressure on them, and that was the biggest key
on that one too. And you put them in third
and longs. I think the Chiefs were like three of
eleven or third downs or what have you. It's rough.
So yeah, it was a good It was a good

(03:17):
job for a good job by them.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
On the flip side, can you give us your astatement
of the performance of Eagles quarterback jylnd Hurts today.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
It was a redemption tour. I remember definitely. There were
times in the city, in the city of Philadelphia where
he was the he was vilified and you look at
the time, like people say, oh, he can't pass the ball,
he can't throw the ball, what have you. And look
what he did when it came up time the big
in the biggest stage of them all, these last two games,
not only against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but

(03:48):
against the Washington Commanders as well to an NSCRY Championship game.
He still tall and it is that calm. Is he
gonna put up three hundred yards all the time? No,
but he's going to get his completion percentage very high
enough so that way, you know, he cans stay away
from his making mistakes as possible. You continue to move
the ball down the field, it continually adds pressure onto
composing defenses, and we saw that they did. That's the
Chiefs and look where they are now.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
So Jalen Hurts aside Chris, who else really stood out
for you and stood up today?

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Forecilly, I think when you look Josh Sweat, that the
ability for him to get that pressure off the edge,
I think it was like two and a half sacks
he had. It really set the tone. So Josh Sweat,
who's going to be a free agent after this coming up?
This coming off season. He made a very good case
to a lot of teams, not only just the Eagles,
but to a lot of teams like, yeah, I think

(04:35):
it's not for me to get paid. He was another one.
And then you look at the I thought the corners,
the young rookie corners, Cooper dejen and Quenyon Mitchell, the
two of them playing on the brightest stage as rookies,
you think like they're really be immersed by the stage
of it all, and they were able to just play
cool and calm, collected, and we saw the gene even

(04:56):
get that pick six. So you look at those were
those were guys I said, And finally I thought, in
Devonte Smith too to grow up an hour away from
the super Dome, and the next thing know you're there,
You're catching touch down a bomb that effectively ended the game.
It was good. It was a good uh. It was
a good performance by all those guys.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
It was twenty four mill at half time, which looks
really comfortable. But then you think back to Super Bowl
fifty one and the Falcons blowing a twenty eighth free
lead to lose to the Patriots. Did you did you
feel comfortable that they would win it at halftime or
were you still quite interested to see what might happen
in the third quarter.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
I was still. I'm just like, you know, let me
check because the last time I was at fifty seven
and I thought I saw Patrick Mahomes limping, Chase Daniels
was warming up, and I'm like, oh, this game's over.
I started writing down and like, okay, Eagles got this,
and then all of a sudden came a second window.
That's a lot the loss, and that's all going overtime.
So yeah, I was gone. You can never you never
ever ever take for granted about these things with Patrick Mahomes.

(05:54):
But the Eagles did what they had to do. They
put continue to put pressure even those spiel goals, continue
to put points on the board and really pressure them
being able to do that, and that's and they were
able to do that and really make things difficult for
Patrick Mahomes. And now they're looking try to start a
new three peet somewhere something else.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Does this one heal the wounds of two years ago
of Super Bowl fifty.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
Seven a bit? Yeah, I think recently, yeah, because now
it does in a way. But now you kind of
go like, you know what, they really should have had
two in three years, because that team should have beaten
they should have beaten that, they should have beaten the
Chiefs in that previous one fifty seven. But you take
what you can get and went out and you look
at the way this team came back from last year

(06:34):
and they were hitting one and you thought, okay, they're
going to make the Super Bowl again, and then they
collapsed in epically and now that they were to pass
on the first round, but that might have been the
best thing for them. That was able to get them refocused.
They had to target everybody came in focus, what have you.
And it was rough going around. I'm gonna lie it
was rough going early into season two and two at
the bye week and like a lot of questions, they

(06:55):
right at the ship and they were able to get
to what they were able to do. And this is
where we're at right now.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Well, they have a history, n I have bating perennial
Super Bowl win? Is that beate Tom Brady in the
Pitriots in Super Bowl fifty at the Eagles been I'm
debating perennial super Bowl winners.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
I don't know. Maybe they relished the term of being
an underdog because you think even going back to eighty
when they were playing the Raiders and they beat the
Raiders beforehand, but the Raiders and they were Eagles for
favorite and next thing, you know, okay, they lost the game.
There's something about them being underdogs and they almost won.
They almost won thirty nine against the Patriots. Who's on Brady.
It's something they relish about being those underdogs and they

(07:32):
band together and it seems to work out.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
So do you predicting Chris that now having as you say,
I probably could have should have one, one, two and
three years, can I now start to you know, start
to bait the chase a little bit and not be
the underdog anymore. Can I go on a bit of
a run.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
I think I think everybody will. They'll try it. I
could see them going like, you know, we're underdogs. Anybody's
just looking like you're a Super Bowl champions just hung
up a banner, you get in a ring, like you
can't be the underdogs? What's going on? But yeah, I
think it's one of the things coing. They'll they'll keep
that mentality and especially Yea questions going into the offseason. Now,
several players such as Josh I mentioned Josh Water earlier,

(08:12):
Zach Bond, and Milton Williams. Those three are from a
free agent's right guard, Mcai Beckton. He's to become a
free agent. So they're going to do whatever they can
in this little small window that they have before they
reached cap. The salary cap comes and get them. But yeah,
they'll think, they'll think they're undergards. But nobody, nobody in
the leagues would I ever think they are underdogs coming

(08:33):
from this one now and.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
In a wat of scenes, Chris wait a Super Bowl
fifty nine rank among those you've.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Seen, it was I think where I felt like we're
looking back at the eighties and nineties versus the Super
Bowls where there was so much domination, where you saw
the NFC just promallily beat the AFC like you saw
the John Elway Broncos before he actually finally win one.
When you look at those Washington commanders with Mark Rippon,
you look at Phil Simms and taking them, you look

(09:02):
at it, you like, it just felt like that type
of game. It was just pure domination. Was it going
to go down? Was one of the best, the best
watched and most exciting. No, but I think it will
go down as one of the most dominant ones, and
that twenty two twenty two points by Chiefs because it
was fooled because a lot of that was in the
garbage time and our Eagles were playing off coverage.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Light in the evening. Now of course in Philadelphia. But
will there be a potty young on for the not there?

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Oh, it started already there. Fireworks are doing the city
the city, well New Orleans did it. They greased the
poles so everybody wouldn't climb up on the poles and
started the street lights and everything else. I will I
will safely bet that there even though there was a
mishap beforehand, and last the Nancy Championship game where somebody
was fortunate passed away from climb up a pole. I

(09:46):
will bet you that there are people that are still
go yeah, why not and start throwing up there too.
It's it's party's gonna be going down probably till two
three o'clock in the morning.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Fantastic. And just to finish show, we should talking about
the half time show. Not sure how much of it
you watch, but how much is Kendrick Lamar's half time show? Well, well,
it hasn't been received.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Yeah, it depends who you like. I see a lot
of people not liking it. I thought it was good,
and I thought the little thing, especially when it came
to drink and everybody was wondering is he going to
see the line? And not like us, is he going
to see it? And then he had that little sly look.
So when we could see in so we could turn
TV off, he started looking in and he said I
was like, oh, okay, that was that was pretty strong.

(10:25):
You so care your conventions. That's very bold. And then
might come up with a lossuit later And that was
very bold. It was very very bold.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
