Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk Z'B.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Today, the black Caps squad for the upcoming Test series
and in the UK and Ireland was announced. Notable selections
include Kane Williamson studying the ship making the trip over.
Willow Rat returns to Red Bull cricket following a lengthy
injury layoff. Good thing, we've got plenty of quicks. Dean
Foxcroft was named in the squad for the series, is
(00:33):
in line to potentially make his first Test match his
Test debut for the black Caps. He joins us now,
good a Dean, how are you good?
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Mate?
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Yeah, very good, Thank you.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, it's it's been a pretty cool day and the
last pretty cool couple of weeks, I would say, but yeah,
I'm very good. Thanks, so are you?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah good? You came over from the Republic many a
year ago to follow this dream. I'm presuming this is
this is your goals? Is what you're after when you
got here?
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah? Definitely, Yeah, left Africa? What was it ten years
from now on? And yeah, obviously you had one dream
in minus to play cricket for the for the black
Caps and or let alone just play cricket in New Zealand,
and yeah, ten years later, I've got a Test called
up so which is pretty cool and probably the ultimate.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
It's obviously played Test cricket one day.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
But yeah, obviously to left Africa ten years ago was
sad to leave family behind, but also a great opportunity
to do something new and yeah I can't believe it,
but yeah no, glad it worked out beautifully so far.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, well, Test cricket's the one, isn't it. That's what
you're after, even though it's pretty thin these days, few
and far between. That's what you hang your cap on
the India career.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
Right, yeah, one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Like obviously, Test cricket has come a long way now
and everyone just talks about the cricketer is and it's
obviously five days of hard cricket. But yeah, like like
I said, of my dream from a young age was
to play Test cricket and yeah, obviously to be in
the Test squad now is pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
So yeah, I can't wait for this tour and yeah,
blood excited.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
So are there caveats around us? Because these toos you've
got Irish and you've got the English as well. What
are you actually involved in. What have they promised you?
When do you actually get to play.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
I'm not sure about playing opportunities, but obviously just in
the squad and I've been told that I will go
to Ireland and the first tiss in the UK and
and then they will probably see where mid Chantney is
at the time. Obviously you got injured in the I
p L, so I'm not sure what's what's going on
with with that injury. But yeah, Rob just told me like, look,
(02:35):
I'm going to go as cover for Midchanna and then
they will assess and see what where he's had with
this injury. So yeah, I think we will just take
it day by day and when we go on to
its just I don't know, just see where we are
at and and and and see what happens with with
meat as well.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Tell us about your strengths planning. You can you can
head a ball with your bowl the off break as well.
Where do your strengths lie. You're a bowling all under,
a batting all around, or a bats many bowls or
a bowlery bats.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
There's a lot there's a lot of a lot.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Going on there, but I would say I'll probably batting
all rounder yeah, look, I think whatever needs to happen
on the day, if I need to bat, I need
to bowl, it's probably just make sure I do my job.
That's probably the rule number one is just do your job.
But yeah, I'll see myself as as a batting all rounder. Yeah,
I'll play for obviously for the stacks and betting top
(03:27):
a year and obviously went to Bernadeshi and played more
like a middle order better with Bolls off spin. So again,
if I need to be more of an off spin
on this tour or more for a better on this tour,
I'm happy to do it.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
So and that's probably part of my strengths is just
to play whatever role is even to me.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Yeah, obviously, I think for me it's just yeah, like
I've mentioned, just play what's in front of me and
see what the rule is and take it on and
just be positive and go hard at it.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
So, yeah, you've experienced international cricket before though for New
Zealand you played a few ODIs, you played a handful
of T twenty eyes as well. You feel comfortable in
that space at that level internet no cricket.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Yeah, definitely obviously made My debut was three years ago.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Long ago.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Oh wow, yeah, three years ago.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
In Dubai, and then I went to black went to
Bangladesh as well for my debut and got a firstball duck,
so there's something I always remember. But yeah, look, I
think with the environment of the Black Caps, everyone is
so welcome and obviously open arms, and even though, if
you like me, you only played a handful of games,
you walk in there and you feel welcome and everyone
(04:37):
makes it enjoyed, enjoyable for you, so there's no pressure
and that's front.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
So in the end of the day, it is you've
got to You.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Just got to rock up and play cricket and have
fun with you with with.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
The people around you. So yeah, look, I.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Love the environment the black Caps, even though I've only
played a handful of games. It's definitely a good dressing
room to be part of and and something special.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Stop me if I'm wrong, But didn't you play age
group cricket for the Republic way back when?
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, well when it was twenty fourteen, twenty fifteen, Yeah,
I played as field cricket and went to the undernine
to work up in Beannadesh as well, and yeah, played
against New Zealand and got one hundred but yeah that
was ages ago.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah, do you feel a wee bit dirty that you're
now playing for New Zealand you're adopted at home? Is
there a wee bit of a tinge going on? Maybe
I should have stayed at home and played for South
everyget you have that that guilt, that balance of guilt team, No,
not really.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Yeah, like I said, I've made it de season ten
years ago to move to another country, into a new
country and you.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
Know, starts freeh and yeah, got a family here now
as well. So yeah, there's definitely no guilt in that front.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
And I think, yeah, it's just obviously a lot of
sacrifices and you're going to enjoy the sacrifices and cherish
the sacrifices because it's it's not happened every day.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
But yeah, no, there's definitely no guilt in that.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
We're looking back at the or looking across at the
other guys in the team. You've got reasonable relationships with
a few of them. If you've played well, you've been
playing a central, you've played down Otaga as well. How
do you connect with the most in that side?
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah, obviously played for two associations so far, but yeah,
obviously like, look, the squad that went to Bangladesh is
a complete different squad that were as that's going to
the UK, So I'm looking forward to to seeing.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Some new faces.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
But obviously I've spent a bit of time with Russian
Vendra on a couple of tours before Bleed Tickner as well.
It's probably one of my good mates now, so yeah,
I'll say probably those guys, and I've spent a bit
of time with the guys that we play along on
the circuit in domestic cricket, so it's good.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
To see some faces again.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
But yeah, again, like I said, there's probably a new
squad that wasn't in Bangladesh, So yeah, looking forward to
to connect with new people and build new relationships. And yeah,
and obviously there's some old faces like Tom Layson that
was in Bangladesh as well.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah he can call the skipper old day.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Definitely not all well experience, I'll.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Say much better. Cricket is a stats monster game. I
know it is. I played, but only to a very
low level. It's even not going anywhere else. But you
know your numbers inside out. Some players though they don't,
they gauge success in another way. How do you gauge
success in your career over the years.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, like Crooker is definitely a stats driven game, and
it's something that I've been caught up in the past,
has probably looked too much into the stats and in
what I need to do and stuff like that.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
And again, like again, the game of cricket.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
It's it's like a roller coaster, a lot of upslotters
down and you just got to ride the wave with it.
So yeah, look, there's probably a time where you can
look at stats and and and see where you can
get better at. But also for me, it's not too
much about stats. It's more about like, whatever happens in
front of you, you got to you've got to do well.
So look these guys who can who love the stats.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
I know a guy is Shody. He loves he loves
everyone's stats.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
And you can name a player and give me stats,
you will know the exact player you talk about. So
but yeah, I like it. I like stats in a
certain way, but not that much.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
He is prime cricket geek. And I say that with
all the love in the world. You've gotta love be Sody.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Way.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
My last thing for you, Dian Fox Coffin, Thanks very
much for joining us. You've hit the ground running in
your late twenties, which suggests to me you know your
game inside out, but still a lot to learn. You've
still got huge improvement within you, but you come from
a very a solid base.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Yeah, only twenty eight now, it feels all but also
so young at the same same time. Yeah, again, I
think it's just probably. Yeah, you can be a late bloomer,
it can be an early bloomer, but you still got
to learn on the spot. And yeah, like I'll take
this back in the dish too, twenty eight something new
for me and I'll try to learn everything.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
I'll try and learn something.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Every day, so for me as yeah, obviously go on
this first test to us, something new for me, and
in that regards, I will still be young in that face.
So yeah, hopefully I can take it into my cricket
in the future and still play hopefully for the black
EPs when I'm thirty five, thirty six, and you never know.
But again, yeah, if you can take all those experiences
(09:33):
with you till the late stage, why not.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
And on that we wish you all the best and
thanks very much for joining us. Teen congratulations looking forward
to seeing you grab as many runs as you possibly
can and your time for how long that may be
at the crease.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Congratulations, dance mate, appreciate it.
