Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Waldergrave
from News Talk Z'B.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Today, the team's a name for the second round of
the MPC, and one particular selection raised plenty of eyebrows.
Wellington Lines are loose. Forward Dupless Carriffe was named to
start at second five for their match against Auckland on Saturday.
Dupless aka Doops is going to join us in a moment,
(00:33):
but beforehand, we spoke to the coach of the Wellington Lines,
Trent Alenata, to ask what inspired the switch, and he
had this to say.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Unfortunately, we've got a pretty extensive list of injuries and
unavailabilities and now especially in our backs in particular, so
it wasn't one that was taken lightly. There was I
suppose the need and yeah, it's an exciting prospect and
I suppose one that everyone's sort of looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I'm looking forward to. I hope he is as well,
and I'm talking about who, of course the man of
the moment, second five eight, Dupless Carriffe. Good evening, dupes Ian.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
That's yeah, thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
On, brother mate, thanks for joining us. We've got to
ask the question right here, right now. What on earth
are you doing playing at second five eight? You've got
a twelve on your jersey? Are you okay, mate?
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yeah, I'm okay. I'm to be clearly honest, I'm not
sure what I'm doing there, but it's a it's a
last resort of sorts. We picked up a couple of
injuries while extra injuries on the weekend against Hawk Space.
So yeah, it's really really kind of what a situation
of whatever the team needs. By no means nominated myself
(01:53):
to play threck and five, but that's yeah, that's the
that's the next best option at the stage. Hopefully it's
just one week.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Well, I don't know, one's see more. It's worked okay
for another couple of Lucy's decided to play in other positions,
but worry about that. What about you right now? Tell
us about the conversation when Trent set you down. What
did he say? How did you respond?
Speaker 4 (02:14):
Oh, I think a couple of jokes have been made
in the change room about something some you know, something
like this happening after the weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
And he called me a.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Couple of days Oh yeah, a couple of days ago,
and he said Dupe's twelve.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
That was that was as far as it went.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
And yeah, I just said, look mate, if you trust
me to play twelve and that's what the team needs,
then then I'll happily do it. But yeah I'm not.
We'll see how we go on the weekend. Doce before
we go start making a habit of this kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Steep learning curve plainly? Yeah, you've been in it right now.
So what have you done over the last couple of days?
How on earth have you tried to tune yourself up
for this role?
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Oh? Just watched heaps of just watch heaps of code,
been watching games of Jordie, games of Quinn, games of Pedia,
among a gin just to learn as much as I
can about the intricacies of twelve. And I guess how
they operate, which is obviously, surprise, surprise, a little bit
(03:17):
different to number seven.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Just quietly. You've got to be second guessing everything, don't you,
in order to get that ball out, to receive the
pass from your first five, to get it out to
you anywhere else. It's it's going to be really difficult.
I'm not going to lay a line and you say, mate,
you'll be sweet as because this is complex.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Yeah, no, I'm under no illusion the challenge that's in
front of me. Yeah, I would like to say I'm
a skillful ray player to begin with, but the second
five demands is obviously something that I haven't quite yeah
met before, So spending plenty of time this week on
(03:57):
my skill set, and I am probably more than anyone
else in the nation of this week in praying that
it's a dry game.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Absolutely. Look, I mean I'm going to drop you some
pretty big company here, but you look at some of
the players who have actually gone from where you've gone
out to where you're going. I'm thinking Joan Olamu, Eric
rush Sonny Bill Williams. That's pretty illustrious company. Dubes.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
Yeah, yeah, Look, I mean I've got the twelve on
my back this weekend. I wouldn't say H'm anywhere near
those boys in terms of competition, but you know, there's
there's no leck of inspiration around, so I don't have
to look far to find some pretty good players to hopefully,
you know, pick one or two things up for the weekend.
(04:42):
And and and none more so than the boys in
front of me. I haven't seen the Auckland team yet,
but Xavier Tile and Peter Ky obviously are pretty pretty
handy midfield combo.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
So yeah, wish me luck. Brother, I'm no one.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
No, I'm never wanted to turn down a challenge.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
No.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
I talked to Ze last week. He's a top bloke.
I really enjoy good Man. Now talking about the kicking game,
what I'm seeing happening is you're going to shape to
kick and then you're just going to run straight over
the guy in front of you because you know you're
going to give him a second chance.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
Right, I can, I can kick.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
I was going to ask this, tell me about your
kicking game.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
I don't never left book but left boot, but I can.
I can kick the ball, So I have never had
the license to do so before. But yeah, they might
regret maming me after this weekend if I pull a
few too many kicks out.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
It's great to hear you smiling. I mean you always do.
You're you're very brilliant, uplifted character. But you've had a
bit of a filthy time of it for for high honors,
so it's nice to have something to put your teeth
into that's a little more positive. Right.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Oh, look, I'm always Yeah, I won't have the fact
that there's there's been a couple of lows accompanied by
obviously a couple of highs in our household recently. But
for me, like I'm just, I love playing rugby and
I love Wellington, and you know, the opportunity to play
for them is something that I never take for granted.
And I just I wasn't sure I realized I'd be
(06:16):
faced of another big challenge so early on in the season.
But hey, you know, if they trust me enough, like
I said earlier, then I'm going to do my absolute
utmost too. Yeah, ern and keep that trust. But I
said to yeah, your fingers crossed some some of the
boys come back from injury, because I'd feel a lot
more comfortable with a seven on my back, But if
(06:38):
it's a twelve this weekend, then so be it.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
I love a hybrid player. It's very fastable on this day.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
It seems to be, and I just I just want
to clarify that it has absolutely nothing to do with that.
This is this is not my desire at all to
become this, you know, this hybrid back forward. But hey,
who knows, it might go well this weekend and it
might not.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
I tell you what, you could maybe send video of
it to Dave Renny and go where I can play
open side. But look, I can play it here as well. Yeah,
Lester fying a new ki, he can do this. That's
that's got to give you another string to your bow, surely.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Yeah, well he's hoping. I just I just got to
get it right and then and then maybe I'll have
a look at sending some clips out. But for some
for some old reason, I feel like I won't need
to send them any clips. He'll be watching. They'll be
watching anyway. I'm not sure if through interest or curiosity,
but yeah, I imagine there'll be a couple of eyes
on the screen this weekend.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
I'm really interested to know about the nature of the
twelve on your jersey. Do you have to pull all
the sevens off or they're giving you a brand new kit?
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Not we this is NBC, this is Provincial Raby. We're
talking about here, dare So we recycle our kit every weekend.
And yeah, I believe the twelve is big enough to
fit me. Peter among A Jensen has a pretty sizable frame,
so if it could fit him last year, then I'm
sure it could fit me this year.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
He's a big ladder right and you mentioned and strong,
that's what you are, right and subtle. You've got the
head move and you've got the subtle hands to deliver
to scent it right right.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
Yeah, I've got some soft skills tucked away there. You
might see them every now and then when I'm wearing seven.
But I guess she'll be required a lot more this weekend.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
And you we trust with this one. You mentioned celebrations
in your household before, of course, that the Ministry of
your better half merely really Buchannan had a fantastic Commonwealth game.
She must be absolutely bouncing right now.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
She is.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
I'm not sure if she's done thing right at the second.
I think she's a little bit tired from celebrations. But yeah,
just an extremely you know, like extremely extremely proud moment
for herself and the team and all of her family
and friends who just support her so so heavily and
(09:01):
so unconditionally.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
So yeah, I'll just just couldn't be happier for those
girls and knowles.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
I know there's a lot of a lot of two
villains going on in the Netble world back here in
New Zealand, so for them to go over there and
get gold and represent so well on a big stage
like that is Yeah, just phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
They call it a mic drop moment, and I think
we all hugely appreciate it. Plus see Curriffee or Doups
as you're more commonly known.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
Bro.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Thanks very much for your time. Best of luck out
there in twelve mate, and you watch out for zeb
because he's a monster.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Yeah, I'll be watching out for Zave.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
And my nephew actually playing a t T.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
But I'll take all the luck I can get. Dust
appreciate your time.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
