The Irish are heading to Auckland to contest the 32-year-old unbeaten streak at Eden Park which always creates intrigue ahead of a test match.

World Cup, I'll ask me. Ian Jones, former All Black lock.
He joins us now to discuss that streak and this game.

I'm well, thanks Darcy. It's been a huge week here
at the All Blacks experience. People are pumped up, of course,
a big Test match in Auckland, so it's nice to see,
nice to feel it.

It'd be all over this because if we are out
at the moment, the Test match coming out, but with
the World Cup in action currently a fee for World
Cup it almost feels to me like the game possibly
hasn't got the traction it deserves. Is that a fair comment.
I know you're right in the middle of it all,
but it's like an iris test that the record at
Eden Park. I don't know if it's quite great. People

on a shortened curlies.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Yet Yeah, I feel different to you, Darcy. We must
operate in different circles. There's a real buzz whenever the
All Backs are playing. Is that real pride when the
team run out there? This is a rugby country, Darcy.
You don't have to scratch the surface very far to

everyone to feel a connection to the All Backs, to
feel real pride in the record of the All Backs,
to feel invested. I the All Backs are so I
get to feel that every day, and then you know
when you have the overseas so international business is coming
and who knows so much about our team know about
the record once again, really intrigued about what makes up

this amazing team. This is what I get to feel
every day, and that's what New Zealanders should feel.

Immense pride and that the.

World knows us, will knows our team, will knows what
our team stands for and so yes, mate, everyone is
pretty fired up.

And I suppose I'm drowned, drowned by the World Cup
right now and that gets out of the way. Tomorrow
essentially wants England and Argentina play, and I expect that
the emphasis on this Test match will come, and it
will come with the standard detail the record at the
Fortress at Eden Park. How heavy is this weight on

the All Blacks or does it work the other weight?
Does it lift these guys up to another level knowing
what they're defending.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Well, you know the mindset of a law Black, and
it works the other way. Rights they want to add
to that record, you think of the opposition have all
those doubts about that record, how they can get that
across the line, how they can win at Eden Park.
So that's on the other side. But the All Backs,
it's just about adding to that legacy. The crowd plays

a huge part, you know. So everyone going along to
Eden Park on Saturday night will feel connected, feel involved,
feel part of that Fortress mentality and that kind of
just helps us circle the wagon.

So the crowd plays a big part.

So the sellout, which is going to be fantastic, It's
going to be rocking and the players use that energy.
They inspired by that energy of our home crowd, all
the messages during the week. You just have to look
around this Allbacks experience at the moment and as I
see all these kids coming in in All Back jerseys,
just thinking and giving the energy to the team. This

is what it stands for the The All Backs are our
national team.

They are the team that we all get in behind.

And it's days like nights like this at Eden Park
that we really need the crowd and we're going to
get the crowd because it's going to be awesome.

And with Dave Rennie, he's taken this side over. There's
been a huge change in structure right across enz R
from the top right the way through to the bottom
of the All Blacks team as well. From what you
know of Dave Rennie, Do you think you'll lean much
on this record and the defense of this record.

Will we take.

Another direction for inspiration for the All Blacks for this
Irish test.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
No. I believe he'll lean into the legacy, lean into
the history of who the All Blacks are, what that
jersey is meant to players before this current team, what
jersey demands of all of those players who have played
at Eden Park added to that record, that legacy at
Eden Park. He'll lean right into that. And from all

of that, this current team can then add their own legacy,
their own manner to that jersey. So no, that's right
in his wheelhouse about connection, about history, about legacy, but
also so and rightfully so, how this team can create
their own legacy, their own manner. What direction do they
(05:15):
want to take this team? So yeah, he's he's good
for that and he's been brilliant to see and how
he connects with New Zealand is how we are part
of what he wants us or wants this team to
go on. He wants New Zealand to go on that
journey as well.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
What have you seen in the first two tests in
this new Renny regime with the All Blacks and where
they are heading? What can you pull out of the
game so far to the positive? And I suppose are
there any bits that are maybe a nagging in the
background about what should be or hasn't been achieved.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
It's all positive for me.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Test wins that's pretty special.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
And the speed of what they can play the game at.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
I think kind of often sets new Zealand apart the skill,
the agility, the fitness of our athletes, I think is
a real strength of New Zealand rugby.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
So we're seeing a lot of that.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
We're seeing a lot of togetherness, aren't when they had
to defend. They're defending really tight when they need to,
which is good. And we're seeing some good depth off
the bench, so you know those second wave coming through,
which has been pretty cool to see.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
And you know there's some resilience.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
We were under the pump in the first thirty forty
odd minutes last weekend, but stayed calm. He clearly did
some clear messing at halftime. And what you need, Darcy,
in a game of football is that resilience to wear
those oppositions down, to apply pressure for longer periods of
time in the opposition. And the games aren't ever going
(06:54):
to be won in the first thirty or forty minutes.
Fans like you and I probably want that to happen.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
It's unrealistic.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
But the team changed tactically, they stayed strong and they
went away with a game quite comfortably in the end.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
That should be real positive for all of us.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
How close do you think Ian Jones is the all
Blacks to having there they're starting fifteen or is that
an irrelevance under this new regime from what we've seen
in the last two Test matches. To go at Eden
Park because you'd think it will be their best team
that they'll be named this weekend because history says it
needs to be.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Yeah, I totally agree with you. I think it needs
to be. It should be the occasion the opposition is
deserving of all of that, isn't it. And then those
combinations as we get past Eden Park and then start
looking head to the South African Tour.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
We need those combinations. We need that kind of mindset.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
But we also need, which we're going to have to
have in cer that next man up mentality because.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
You know injuries are going to happen.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
So whoever the fifteen players that run out there for
us will be the fifteen that you and I and
the country will back one the bench coming on to
finish off the job. I absolutely want to say this
to all all Black coaches and trust their knowledge where
they want to take the team, and you and I

just go along for the right mate. They are the
people who understand what they want and Mate, you and
I just sit back and.

ask you the lock Stocks not looking so bad in

The amazing really good. I mean I can't wait, with
the greatest respect to the guys playing right now for
the big lump Fabian Holland to come back too. So
that's only just going to add to another level. Sam
Dowry was so good. I really enjoyed Hannah and his
debut performance down in christ Church. I really love the

way that he was running and getting himself around the paddock.
We've got some chiest boys in there. And to provide you,
of course, he.

Plays six though as all that he might makes you

What do you think I actually think he could play

and that that mindset that we probably want and that
loose forward mixed. So yeah, I think you did right.
He may have a crack at sex. I'd love to
see larkit seven boy one an athlete. He looks well phenomenal.
And then you know Adie at eight and that's if
you do that with too goo y. I guess it

just allows you to maybe have to loose forwards on
the bench, you know, Luke Jacobson and Simon Parker on
the bench to bring that impact to later on. But
once again, Dave Rennie will know better than me and
he helped them in for the job.
