Fresh of their historic test series victory over England, the Black Caps are straight back into action with a 5 match ODI series in the West Indies.
That squad was named today and someone returning to the side is fast bowler Jacob Duffy.
He joined Nick to discuss further.

I mean, we're a day and a bit on from
a famous Test series win over England in England, and
today the black Caps have named a squad for a
five match ODII series which starts on the twelfth of July,

so just eleven days away. This is against the West Indies.
In the caravan and back in the mix after some
paternity leave, is Jacob Duffy You joins me on the line,

Good mate. We're doing all right, Yeah, doing very well.

Hope you are too, hey before we get into this
ODII series. Surely as a new dad, you've been up
all hours of the night. What did you make of
that Test series win over England in England?
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:01):
Perfect, Kin'd have a baby is when you got a
Test series on England? The time zone works that well
when you're up there stroke sort of during those nights.
But it was awesome, obviously great viewing.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
For one.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
I thought the cricket was lady good to watch, but yeah,
sort of the performance as we put out.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Obviously, I've been over there in a few test series.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
Haven't played, but I've been there and the sort of
the squads and stuff, and it's a.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Tough place to play.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
Obviously they're pretty good in their conditions. But yeah, I
think we just outplayed them. And I thought I took
a whole score. You know, there's what five six different
guys got hundreds and then sort of three or four
guys got five fers. Like I think just across the board,
everyone stepped up at different times and you compare that
to the English side. There was just a whole bunch
of noise and media and all sorts of stuff, and

we just quietly went about our business and it was
it was just awesome to watch, you know, pretty clinical
from the boys and yeah, sort of makes you proud,
proud to watch that sort of stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah, and that's from someone who's been inside that that team,
And I feel like for a lot of New Zealander
is yet certainly proud of the performance and the way
in which the team went about it. Hey, Jake, so
much has been made about the bowling Stocks in particular,
you alluded to, you know, several guys making centuries, but
there were so many different performers. Of course Matt Henry
(02:11):
and the second Test at the Oval. Then here's an
injury setback Kyle Jamison, Will O'Rourke. We even saw a
situation where Zach Folks became our first concussion substitutes, taking
six wickets in the third Test. Haven't even mentioned Nathan
smith Year who ended up getting Player of the Series.
You bowlers all seem like you get along. How stoked
are you for the group of quicks, because, as you say,
(02:33):
it really was a collective effort.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah, we do. We get along well.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
I think we will work well together. We will try
to pick up some peace from each other. And I
think what we do do well is that we're all
slightly different in our own ways, you know, whether it's
what we're trying to do with the ball, whether way
we move it off a wicket, Folks says your next swing.
kJ and Wolf there heights in their paces, and yeah,
I think it's just a good bunch of guys that
(02:57):
really just generally enjoy playing for New Zealand and just
want to go out there and especially Test career. I
met Henry talks about all the time Test Week's the
best week of the YEARFM to go out there there
over and put that performance in and then obviously Smudge
teamed up letting the boys the way he did. I'm
that he was actually he bowled like a a spell
or something in the morning the day that he was
winning out to bowl in the game.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
So, you know, just different guys at different times.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
It was just as just as a credit to a
depth and you know where we're as a country.

I guess Jacob Duffy with me here on news talks
he'd been and I suppose sort of secondary to that,
there was a lot of people, perhaps you know, less
of an educated view that perhaps after the sort of
Salvi Boltz Wagner era had passed us, that you know,
I might take a bit of time to rebuild, but
it's been anything but it's been seamless in the transition.
How how proud are you in terms of that depth
(03:47):
now getting these opportunities and thriving and relishing in big
series like against England.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Yeah, it's awesome.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
I guess sometimes you just you just don't know until
you're you know, you put the guys out there and
I think we've always said it like it's a credit
to a domestic, domestic system. The planking shield was obviously
producing good cricketers, and you know, we talk about guys
like Darrell is a great example, the guys that grind
away for years and years and then they get their
chance and then you know, you're you're not putting out
your fifteen Can Willings fifteen year King Williamson career, but
(04:16):
he's putting out a pretty bloody good eight or nine
years of high class you know, international like bossing world cricket.
You know, So just stuff like that, that's you know,
that's a that's a credit to our system. Again, I think,
like I said at depth of the moment's probably as
good as ever burning. I think we keep showing it
again and again, and no matter what sort of format,
whether it's white ball or red bull, we seem to
(04:37):
be competing against the best in the world.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Cannot wait for those series against India and of course
away to Australia in the summer. But before then, and
literally what eleven days time, we have some white ball
cricket ODII Series five matches against the West in these
jam how much are you looking forward to to getting
back into some cricket. I know that, you know from experience,
(05:00):
there's nothing like the birth of your first child, but
just to be back in a team environment and playing
for you Zieland yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
It'd be nice to sweep through the night for having
wake up too, which would be good.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
But no, I'm very very excited.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
Obviously I've missed the last three series for the Black Caps,
which obviously we'll to chuck the ipl and then this
one too. It's as good to watch them whin it's
tough to watch at the same time and it's a
very bit of sweet. So I'm very excited to get
back in amongst them and you get around it, and
I enjoy a one day cricket especially, you know, got
this one day World Cup and what eighteen months time
from now, so I guess it's the start of a
(05:34):
campaign building up to that.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
So I've always view the.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
One day Rock Cup as sort of the pinnacle of
you know, of world events. I guess that's the one
that those are the ones I remember, whether it's the
twenty fifteen New Zealand one or the twenty nineteen Taiwan
you know, those are the sort of.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
You know, growing up as a fan, those are the
ones that I really remember, so definitely pushing to be
a big part of that. And you have my own
sort of chant.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
The history from your experience is momentum and winning momentum
like we like the black Caps now have after this
England Test Series win. Is it transferable from not only
series to series but format to format, like there is
a few guys still who have been involved in this
Test series and our jet over to the Caribbean. Does
it feel like a you can pick up on on
(06:16):
where they've they've left off or does it feel like
a clean slate every time you change format or you're
in a different part of the cricketing world.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
No, I think you you know, you put the fern
on the chest and that culture sort of takes over.
I think we've set up a really nice little thing there.
We've got Garne where you know, you come in and
everyone leaves that the ego at the door and you
just get to work and then you see on the
way and I think we do that quite nicely, robing
the coaching stuff pretty much the other whole time. So
they set the standards and then there's always sort of
the trends. You know, there's always the sort of four
(06:47):
or five at least guys that sort of cover across
all the formats. So now I think definitely winning to
does become a habit. I experienced that a little bit
r c B sort of this last sort of month
over the IPL, you know, that sort of felt like
a group that just knew how to win, and even
when things were tough, it felt like we sort of
couldn't get over the line sort of whenever whenever we
wanted to. Really, So, yeah, I guess winning is they

have it and I think definitely the boys are the
boys are finding ways to win, whether it's the World
Cup in twenty twenties and now in Ties Series two.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
So definitely transferable over across the formats.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
And just lastly, Jacob Duffin really appreciate it time here
on news talks. He'd be correct me if I'm wrong.
But is this a first tour to the Caribbean for you?
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Yes, it is for a stort of Caraban for me.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yeah.

What do you what are you expecting you? What do
you know from the guys who have been in the
past or have that sort of CPL experience.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
Yeah, a bit lower, slower sort of wickets. So I
played with the Ramario shipard over in the OK one.
He's from Guyana, which is where we're going for a stuff,
and he said, yeah, a little bit lower, a little
bit slower. You can just hold your length a little
bit longer. And I guess guys have to create, you know,
tough shots off off goodballs over there, which you.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
Know that suits us.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
I think as a bowling attack, we do the basics
really well over a long period of time. So you know,
we've got exciting guys in the group. I think fish
comes into the first time. I O our cricket too,
so that it has base and up and down work whatever.
It might be fun to watch too. So yeah, now
I'm looking forward to it hopefully bit of sunshine and
now that Janet want will be nice too. So I'm
very very much looking forward.
