Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk Sed.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Be rassy Erasmus acts Lee are a team on the
up and a genuine threat going forward. Don't be too condescending.
Just anyway, let's get to cricket smer After all, we're
gonna look ahead to the second Test match between the
black Caps and the West Indies, starts tomorrow. A beautiful
base from Reserve and Wellington. First match ended in a draw.
(00:35):
West Indies just played defensive on the final day instead
of pushing for a record breaking run chase. Wouldn't that
have been funny five hundred and thirty one? But no,
they didn't do it. Jacob Duffy, it'll be the main
pace bowling threat tomorrow because several key players in that
previous Test and right across the board are broken. He
(00:57):
joins us now to talk about carrying that load.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Good evening, Jacob, How are we doing all right?
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I'm doing probably a lot better than you. How long
would the high spa four after that first Test? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I had to do a decent one. But three days
later mate, we sat up right and but how we're
good to go again?
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Well, we're still relatively young, and you know you're full
of verves. So I suppose when you sat there through it,
what did your process through your mind about what actually
happened in christ Church?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, I like that mate, thirty one years old. Young.
It was a funny one. We obviously worked so bloody
hard man and there's a bit of a hollow fair
land to get through that and only have a drawer
on the end of it. Yeah, it wasn't super tough
with that, but yeah, at the same time, you'll be
proud of what you put on the park and the
boys tried their their guts out and it kind of
felt like there's not much more we could have done,
(01:46):
obviously with only three and a half bowlers, I guess
you could say so. Yeah, one hand was very deflating
and gutting, but I guess a couple of days later
you can you can sit there and be proud of
there for you put in for.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
All intents and purposes. It could have been a lot worse.
They could have got trigger happy and tried to smash
you all over the park. So they scored a lot
of runs. See it's unlikely, but that that go through
your mind and old on these guys are in a
bit now they're seeing the ball. Okay, maybe they will
chuck the bad at us.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Well, I'll be honest up until tea time, that's kind
of what I thought the plan was. And from your
point of view, honestly, I think as long as they
kind of kept on trying to go for I think
that would have given us the chance. But just the
fact that they shut up shop and defended like that
just kind of took us out of big game. I guess.
On that wicket, it just becomes so placid and if
you want to occ by the crease, it just didn't
seem that hard. So I was kind of hoping that
(02:35):
they were still gone for it, and I sort of thought,
you know, why not look at a bit of history,
like to chase five hundred plus there on day five
obviously doesn't have very often, and if they did that,
they would have brought us back into the game too.
But that was an incredible sort of innings from them,
and grieves and shake hope and came out there at
the end. So care puay to the windows, I guess.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
I watched McCallum smash the fastest test sentry at that
very same ground, and honestly, I had the fear that
some of my it all over again. Jacob, did you
consider ringing up Steve Smith or David Warner for a
bit of assistance because that was a dead pitch. There
was nothing you could do. What did you even try
out there?
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Well, you saw it, mate, I guess we tried everything.
There's a lot around the wick at bumpers, which my
body wasn't too thankful for. But you know, we did
a lot of that. That obviously worked a lot in
the first innings and then a little bit in the
second innings too, But man, you do anything, you saw it.
We tried the old pitch it up. We tried. We
thought the ball got into a condition where it might
(03:33):
reverse a bit, but I guess that wind just took
everything out of it and just suck the life out
of that pitch. And yeah, I guess what you saw
was all we had. It was around the work at
bumpers kind of made things happen a little bit, but
I guess just the slow nature of it by the
end of the by the end of the fifth day,
and the way they played it, I think they did
bloody well. So we threw everything we could it and
(03:53):
hopefully the Wellington picture got more life and that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
So you're good as gold to come rolling back in
again because you're going to be the scene at the
ripe young age of thirty one. You're basically going to
be the senior man and that side on presuming if
folks goes back in there again, maybe Techman might get selected.
But there's a couple of new guys on the horizon
as well. See, you're going to carry quite a lot.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Don't you. Here there is mate, there's a fresh, fresh
looking bowling line up, which it's awesome. I know we
all know each other pretty well, you know, me and
text get on very well. And male mate Raiser from
Becking the Ittager days is in the lineup and Christian
Clark there too, so that's that's awesome. It's exciting. I
think between us we've got seven Test skips, so we'll
(04:37):
find a way to get twenty twenty Test wickets and
you can get up mount back in that limo. Will
there'll be an awesome story to tell.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Here's an old one for you. In two years there
have been six debutants Test cricket debutants of the black Caps.
They've all been seemas you're churning through them, aren't you.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
I guess yeah. It just shows you the state of
player cricket at the moment. Man, we're playing so much crecket.
I think I counted up the other day. I think
that it was like the eighteenth game already. The summer
that's going back to you know that Ossie twenty twenty series,
and the turnarounds have just been ridiculous. We're playing something
the twenty twenties. We've played back to it game sometimes
or two or three days between each game, and then
(05:17):
obviously that test goings in full five days, only go
us three days here, so there's a lot of cricket,
and then you top in whatever guys are doing in
the winter two. So I guess it's the nature cricket
these days, and probably it's only even get worse too,
with more, more and more cricket than they send to
jam these games in the schedule too. So it's good fun,
bloody loving it, but it certainly takes a toll on
the body that's too sure.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
And you're unlikely to say no to any demands or
commands or orders right from them up above you you
want to give me some cricket, I'm going to play
because what have you got? Five years?
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Leaft?
Speaker 2 (05:50):
You want to do whatever you can.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Right, Definitely. I had a comment about with Rob about
that at the start of the summer, and you know,
because there was talk about guys resting series here and there,
and he sort of asked me what I want. I said, mate,
I'm thirty one. I've waited ten years to be in
the addition, so I want to play big and bloody
game I can. So he's taking out the tree and
I've been picked for most of them, so I can't
complain about that.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Talk to me about Ray and Clark, two guys that
most people wouldn't have really clapped eyes on, unlest they've
been at the ground, or maybe they'd watched the coverage
of our own domestic short form games. Face it. It's
been filmed on a potato and only one of them
that you can't see a great deal. Tell us about
Ray and Clark, what do they bring? Who the hell
(06:31):
are these guys?
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Yeah, so, Michael ra he's a good friend of mine.
I was actually his groonsman, I was wedding. I grew
up playing with them down and Dunedin. He's a big
he's a big human, big sweetie human. He's six foot
six and hits the pitch bloody hard. Hells sir, he's
a bit of a screw loose, so he'll bring some
good energy and hit the pitch hard and get a
little bit of movement sort of away from left handers
into the right handers, and so he'll bring good energy
(06:53):
in that Manute and Christian Clark is sort of more
in the watch that Zach Folks sort of Nathan Smith
Mold sort of that number eight, number nine sort of
bowling around her, who very accurate, consistently bowler, probably not
as fast as Razor, but sort of nibbles the ball
both ways and gets a little bit out of the pitch.
So both I know, very very experienced first class cricketers
(07:14):
and have done a lot of a's cricket to with
New Zealand and tour overseas and stuff like that. So
I know both are ready to go. And whoever gets
the nod l well through the country proud, I'm sure
is it.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Razor because his name's ray Or, because he's got a slaphead.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
That's a good one. I'm assuming it's just the just
the name. But we'll go We'll go for the other one.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Hey, who do you like I'm thinking? I mean, I'm
not the selector. I've got no idea. But out of
the two guys, one of them is probably gonna w
Who do you think it'll be? Who's probably got the
best as far as a balance for the rest of
the seamers that are in there.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
Oh, Ma, that's a Christian for someone about my pay grade.
I'll just you know, I'll get on with who it
plays with. But like I said, either can do the job, mate.
I guess Christian airs a little bit more on the
betting front so he can. Well, you got folks here
there at eight, so he can do that job too.
So I don't know, mate, I'll leave that for Robin
and Tommy and I'll just bowlable mate.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Their pets to bowl, not bat. That shouldn't be a problem.
Get out there and take wickets. Take one last one
for you, Jacob Duffy, who's the angriest out of those two.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Oh, Michael Rabe and no heartbeat. He's got to be
that white line fever. Mate. He gets out there and
I've been on the end of it. Now since since
he's played the Canibary. So he gets out there and
brings some energy which haven't actually be a nice combo
doing that, I.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Reckon and I said last, but I lied. Looks like
Mitchey is going to debut as well, which is fantastic.
He'll be an outlier because he'll be the first non
Seamer in two years to make a Test debut. He'd
be absolutely frothing relationship with him because he's played a
bit of short version cricket too.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Yeah, yeah, I've played a lot with Mitchell now and
either as cricket or on coffee tools with the black
kIPS and stuff and easy classic can team mate. He's
his heart's in the right place. He shows up and
fronts up and puts all the hard work on as
you'd expect from those cantemboring guys and very good goverman
man and very good bet I think, very good first
class record from what I heard. So now he's solidays
(09:15):
he's mean on the short ball, so they won't and
be testing out there. So yeah, he's earnto spot, that's
for sure.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Looking forward to the Limo ride. Jacob Duffy always a
pleasure speaking with you bro go well, go hard, play fair,
and stay fit.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Please, I'll be chying mat I try to stay up right.
