Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Waldegrave
from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Coming up now, we're going to go to Jaco Borrim
he's the assistant coach of the black Caps. Up tomorrow
morning to thirty. Their game gets underway, biggest game so far,
semi final showdown with South Africa assistant coach Jake Borromy
joins us. Now, Jake, welcome to the show. You excited much?
The energy must be huge right now.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
Look, it's a great time to still be involved. You know,
there's four teams left. We've gone through Paul play in
a Super eight phase and with one of the four remaining,
but we want to be one of the two and
then ultimately the ones holding the cup.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
So excited for tonight. We know it'll be tough.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
So that because the only unbeaten team left in the tournament,
they're a good side. They've beaten US already a couple
of weeks ago. But you know, we know we've got
the goods to turn that around and so looking forward
to a big one tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Did you pull it apart that defeat and work out
what went wrong, what went right, what you need to change?

Speaker 4 (01:07):
Absolutely, I mean you've got to do that. You know,
whether you win or lose, you've got to You've got
a review and take the good and the bad, you know,
like I I mean, like I said before, this Safkan
team is good.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
I don't think they probably get the poor to SA
they deserve.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
You know, they were in the final two years ago
in the Western these they probably should have won that.
They're in a position of strength against India and ended
up losing. That they're World Test champions. I mean that
the African cricket is definitely on the outward trajectory and
has been for about five or six years.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
So we know it'll be tough.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
But from that game in arm in a Bad the
conditions will be very different and you know, weirdly just
the way the draw's gone.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
So they've just played I.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Think it's six five of their seven games so far
in armored a bad. So we're not in armor at
a Bad. It's somewhere they're not accustomed to. Neither are
we to be fair, So it's different, different ground, different perch.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Let's see how we go.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Is Matt Henry going to play he's a new dad
where it's a second time ram He's just come back.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Is he going to play, well, he's here, yes, so
is he going to play somewhere?

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I haven't seen him. I know he landed.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
It is morning here, game morning here, Wednesday morning in India.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
I know he landed last night, but late.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
So like what happened with Lockie when he dashed home
for the birth of his first child and came back.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yeah, we'll just see.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
I mean, it's a long way to come and go,
as we know, but hopefully they rested well on the fly.
Hopefully Matt had a good sleep last night. He'll have
a massage, you'll have a run around. Take it slow
at the ground. But I would suggest he's a better
than even started. But I'm not going to say yes
he is playing because I mean, you know, he's just
had what a twenty hour flight travel to get here,
So let's see how it fronts up.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
But I hope you Dann will plays put it that way.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Twenty hours. There nothing. You know, when you're in first class,
it's enjoyable, isn't it, Jake.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
I wouldn't know about first class, Darcy.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
But there are perks of this job, and especially with
being big and tall most of us, there is perks
to the higher classes. But it's still a bit cool,
especially when you consider the whole turnaround time to him
was about five days you know, there and back and
obviously with his wife Holly having the birth of their
second child, so like exciting times.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
But he's back here for a reason, so let's hope
he plays.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
You've got a situation where you've got a South African
side that just can't win these finals, and you've got
your team that is constantly getting into the semi finals
as well. Do you read much into that? Is it
worthwhile dragging over that?

Speaker 4 (03:38):
I know, that's a nice headline. I know people like
to talk about it. I even see some somewhere some
outlet talked about, you know, the history of the two
teams and knockout finals play. And I get it. You know,
it's a nice story that people like to talk about.
But with those it'll be different if it was the

(03:59):
same team basically all that, you know, if it was
kind of the same team, the same players over and
over and over again, whether that is finals, knockout games,
or it's head to head and records whatever it may be. Like,
I get that, but when you start HARKing back to
say the twenty fifteen World Cut where Grand Elliott hit
that six, or you know other examples of that. I

(04:22):
think it's like, well, come on, you know, literally there's
probably no players left from their era, so I don't
think it really matters.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
And you can't pin something on.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
Aidan markrom that happened with Jacques Kallis you know fifteen
years ago, or something that might happen to Mitch Center
that happened.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
To Daniel P.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
Tory years and years ago. So like, different teams, different players.
But I get that it's a nice headline for people.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
I consider myself told off Jake, I'll never do that again.
Hey won last night?

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Do it mate?

Speaker 4 (04:49):
I know that it's a talking point, but you know
what I'm saying, like different individuals, they don't carry they honestly,
they don't carry that same baggage.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
But I do get it from other perspectives.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
What about the team being packed because the conditions are
markedly different from last time out that you may be
not so prevalent. So when you look at your team makeup,
how does that change from the last game to now?

Speaker 4 (05:15):
Yeah, I think less so the jew factor and more
so just the spinning conditions. I mean, in Colombo where
we were for twelve days and had three games although
one was rained out, but two games against Sri Lanka
and then England. You know, we were well. I think
our seam bowler is bowled one, two, three for us
about eight overs. Yeah, I think it was seven or

(05:37):
eight overs out of the forty we bowled in Colombo.
So that tells you how dominant our spinners were over there.
But that's what the conditions dictated. We don't expect the
same spinning conditions here in Cold Cutter.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
I mean it's.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
Still as we will still play slow bowling, but not
to the same level. We have only had one training
just for a short turnaround from Colombo, that international flight
and even though it's not that far really, but you know,
we had one training last night. We used today afternoon.
Got to pitch a little bit of grass on it.
But at the same time they sprinkled it with water

(06:11):
and it probably dried within six and a half minutes.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
You know, it's hot. It's just the conditions here.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
We're expecting slowish with a bit of turn, but not
to the same level of Columbo. So we'll wait and
see how it does when we get there and make
those final living calls close to the time.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
I'm very enthused that i have to get up at
two thirty in the morning to watch you guys play,
but I shall, and I'll enjoy ever your last second
of it. Jacob Warham, thanks very much for your time

Speaker 1 (06:33):
