Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News Talk ZEBB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
All right, sports Talk on it news Talk Zebb, but
joined now by Jared Lawson, yet the father of a
young man called Liam. He's raced Formula One before, but
now he's got a ticket. He signed a contract with
the VCARB team. He's got to the end of the
year nine races, six proper and three sprint races to
impress the powers that beat. Jared, Welcome to the program.

(00:36):
I thought you might have been over there following your
son around, but you've decided to step back to try
and alleviate the pressure. Was that your idea or his?
And welcome?

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Thank you. No, it wasn't really to alleviate any pressure.
It was more just the fact that at the end
of the day, we had a couple of weeks a
couple of months ago with him spending some quality time,
and honestly, on a race weekend you don't get to
see him anyway, so we disfigured we'd leave him to
it and we'll look at going to one of the
rounds later in the year.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
What kind of contact have you had with them over
the last couple of weeks. But if you look on
social media, look on the Formula one sites, all the
chat groups, he's very much the focus of what's happening
after the unfortunate way that Ricardo was left. How's he
dealing with that? The last couple of weeks will there'll
be a tense you.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Know, he's actually final. I spoke to him the other
day and he's he's in a good place. He's I
mean he's been he's been waiting for this opportunity to
come back again for you know, for twelve months now,
so I mean he's he's champion at the bit to
get in the seat and get started. So you know,
I don't think there's he certainly, you know, he knows
it's going to be a big mountain decline, as he's

(01:48):
already said. But I think, you know, the reality is
this weekend will be a little bit of a reset,
getting familiar with the car and then from there, you know,
starting to try and make and roads in terms of
speed and getting up to speed.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Patient it's a virtue in his case, after what happened
when he turned up and raced for Ricardo and then
was turned down for the role. He sat there He's
done a lot of work in the simulator. He's been very,
very patient. That's stress for you. How does he deal
with that? You've watched him grow and watched him deal

(02:27):
with stress and delay right the way through his career,
So how does this work for him? Now? He's obviously mature,
But how did he what did he go through?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
I think I think he's I mean, particularly last twelve
months probably in the hardest for him in his entire
racing career. I mean, not having a racing program to
do as a race car driver. As you know, it's
not something that you know, any of them would deal
with particularly well. But I think you know, he's twenty
two now, he's mentally very strong, and you know, I

(02:58):
think he knew he had to basically sit it out
and wait to see what was happening. By far Red
Bull is still the best option for him, and it
still is the best opportunity for him. So I mean,
I think you know, he's smart enough to realize that
at the end of the day, I'm in the right spot,
just be patient and let it all happen.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Must have been tempting, though, when there were door knocks
from other teams saying maybe you should come over and
read Bull. Obviously Coy Bosses said no, that he's our guy,
but the temptation still would have been there just to
get into a seat as soon as puzzible.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, it's very without going into too much contract so
it's very difficult for you know, for someone to leave
in that scenario because you know he's come up through
their junior ranks and you know they've invested in it,
and obviously you know Liam's got a lot of financial
supporters here in New Zealand as well, and you know
the fact that Red Bull have and haven't done that investment,

(03:54):
put that investment into him. They make sure that they're
not going to lose that investment. So you know, for
them taking the option on the contract was you know,
either they took it they didn't take it. If they
didn't take it, he was free to move on. But
you know, at the end of the day, I think

(04:14):
after last year, everyone was reasonably confident. You can never
be one hundred percent confident, but that he'd done enough
for them to not want to let him go.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Jared Lawson joins his father of Liam Lawson ahead of
his what do you call it? A reprise? Of Formula
One after what happened last time around. Tell us about
expectations around the sprint race and the qualifying for that's
very different way to go about your business. It's at
the circuit of the America's Coata, which is a wonderful racetrack.

(04:44):
How does Lim approach what happens considering that he's going
to have a ten grid ten place grid penalty when
it comes to qualifying for the race itself and Formula
One not Sprint.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah, I think at the end of the day, I mean,
no race driver likes to start on the back foot,
and I mean he's not happy about it, but at
the end of the day, it gives him, I think,
an opportunit need to get familiar with the car again,
because I believe it or not, he hasn't actually driven.
I think he's driven this car for one filming day
earlier in the year. That's the only only time he's
actually driven this particular incarnation of the bit of the car.

(05:18):
So so I think for him it'll be session by
session and he hasn't got a lot of time. He's
got one free prag posession before that qualifier and that
will just be about dialing into the track, getting familiar
with the car, and then from there, I think the
sprint race will be will be very good for him
in terms of getting to the next part of the

(05:39):
weekend because obviously the Grand Prix is the important part
of the weekend, the real important part of the weekend.
So I think he will mentally he will just he
will know that he's just got to build and build
and build.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
He's competed on tracks race circuits all over the world
and he's done particularly well as a freshman, as a rookie.
If you will when he's turned up, does Cota suit
him from a driving perspective as per the first corner's
going to be difficult, and then when he starts getting
through that loopy old snake section left front, left, front,
left right, I see him performing particularly well.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
It suits the.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Way he races. What do you feel about the track
itself and if it's actually suitable to limb?

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Honestly, because he've never driven it, I think he likes
the track in the sun. He told me that the
other day. I mean, he said, it's it's a fun
track to drive. But I think until you're in the
car and you're actually out there doing it he won't.
You know, we don't really know, and a lot of
it is going to come down to how good the
car is around that circuit. I don't think, you know,

(06:42):
we really know that they may have some upgrades this weekend.
I'm not entirely sure, but you know, one thing's for sure.
I know he will. He'll be giving it one hundred
and ten percent, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Jaredy's got to keep the car out of the weeds
first and foremost, stick it on the black stuff and
don't move. That's that's first option. But secondly, when you
look at the rest of this year, I know you
can't look too far forward but plainly beat your teammate,
beat you uki, and that's probably what he's trying to
achieve to the end of the season.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Yeah, I think. I mean, obviously red Bull, you know,
everything is measured. You know that everything is closely looked at,
and yeah, I mean his performance will be will be gauged,
and that's you know, that's natural. I think, you know, realistically,
they will give him a couple of grand prix. Wanted
to grand prix to to you know, to give him
a bit of time to to get up to to

(07:32):
that that level. But you know, it'll be very interesting
to see it be very interesting these these rest of
these tracks for the year. I think he's done a
free practic session around Mexico, so he hasn't done that track.
He hasn't done Abdaw. I think he's he's done a

(07:53):
practice session around there as well in the Red Bull,
So most of these tracks he's going to do, he hasn't. Actually,
he hasn't actually raced in a race car around in
terms of an actual race meeting. That's just been practice.
So it'll be very interesting to see how he goes.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
No promises from Red Bull around what may happen in
twenty twenty five or there have been you can't tell
us about it. What does the future look like? You
can focus on that he probably can't, no.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
I think. I mean, obviously there's four seats across those
two teams, and I mean everybody knows at the moment
that performance in the top team is being looked at
as well, So you know, naturally both Yuki and Liam
can see that there's potential opportunity at Red Bull in
twenty five or twenty six, and again that's going to

(08:41):
come down to the performance of some of the drivers
and that team, But I think at the stage Alan's
not thinking about that and he's really just focused on
getting up to speed as quickly as possible and trying
to maximize performance. And the six Grand Prix, Jared is.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
A crazy time. As you mentioned in reading Ball, there's
been a lot of changes within read Ball, in the garage,
within management. A number of the key participants in that
team have left, They've walked away, So it could be
a thin time for Red Bull maybe not a time
of strength in twenty five twenty six now comfortable? Does

(09:18):
that make Liam coming through?

Speaker 3 (09:21):
I think? You know, well, no one knows what the
cars are going to be like this year, for either
b Car or for Red Bullaming, you know, and that's
going to be an interesting factor for what happens in
the top team, for who goes where, and you know,
if decisions are made that Max wants to move on
or whatever. I mean, who knows. But like I say,

(09:42):
at the moment, it's all about performance. So you know,
whatever happens, you know you want to be in a
you want to manove yourself to be into in a
good car. But before you can do that, you've got
to you've got to perform and you've got to you know,
you've essentially got to be your teammate. So that's the
focus is getting up to speed.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
It's a long time since you started off. There's been
a lot of sacrifice for you and your family as well.
You go back to four and what else did he
run and championship series? Back in the mid two thousand
he ran an ad AC European formula. Has it been
worth it? The sacrifice that you've gone through for your boy,

(10:23):
that the selling or the remortgaging of the house, the
time you've spent. You think about him and what you've done,
but sacrifice for yourself and the rest of the family too,
and what they've endured to help him get to this stage.
Has it been worth it?

Speaker 3 (10:39):
I think? I mean it's no more than many families
have done for their kids sport or for their children.
And you want to see your kids do well in
then it's a cliched and all the rest of it,
but it's a natural thing to want to see your
kids succeed. No, we wouldn't know anything that we've done.
We wouldn't change it. You know, where ecstatic that he's

(11:00):
living out his dream and you know that's it's a
rare thing. So we're really pleased about it. And wodn't
trying to find.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
Absolutely, I'm glad you wouldn't. I'm glad you never did,
and I'm super glad that come this weekend we've got
another new Zealander involved in Formula One. It's going to
be an epic weekend at Jared Lawson. Take your phone
off the hawk, talk to nobody for the entire weekend,
and we'll catch up again soon as well. Thanks very
much for your time.
