Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk zed Be.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Talk about the White Ferns couldn't get it over the
line their opening ADI against England. It's a three match
series and they lost that first match by one wicket
right at the death. Oh so sad but anyway, quite dramatic.
They're back in action tonight from midnight second One Day International,
hope to square the series, set up a decider on Saturday.
(00:33):
Maddie Green on a hazel, want to play? She is?
She top scored in the opening match eighty eight runs
off one hundred and seven balls, and she joins us Now,
good evening, Maddie. It must be soul crushing right, falling
just short? How does the team bounce back from that?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, it was a bit of a bit of a
bugger not to get across the line in that game.
But you know, I was talking to Susie after the
game and saying, like, those sort of games are fun,
those are the sort of games you want to be
involved in, and obviously we would have loved the result
to go the other way, but yeah, it was exciting
playing in a really cost game like it, and you know,
I thought the girls fought really well with the ball
(01:10):
to get us into the game and give us a
good chance at the back end of their betting innings.
So yeah, disappointed not to get over the line, but hopefully,
you know, there's a few things we can definitely improve
on and take them to the next game, and hopefully
it'd be really nice to go one up on Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Right, What are they the things that you want to
improve on? Key, you would have discussed us at length,
I'm sure with the with the coach and all the
rest of the team. Where do you need to lift Maddie?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Well, I think probably the biggest one was the back
end of our betting innings. You know, we probably laid
a really good platform to sort of get to that
two fifty mark, which on the wicket that we were
playing on probably would have been a really good score.
You know, it's sort of lower and a bit slower,
and I thought if we got to that two fifty mark,
when we got to thirty overs from our betting innings,
we thought that would be a really really competitive score,
(01:54):
and to be honest, even two thirty would have probably
got us over the line there. So we don't know
what the condition is going to be like in Northampton. Yeah,
I think we probably just needed to string a few
more partnerships to you either at the back in their innings.
You know, potentially I could have taken my ownings a
little bit deeper and helped us get to that sort
of two thirty marks. So yeah, that's probably the biggest
work on as a group. And I thought we're pretty
(02:14):
good with the ball to be honest. You know, I
thought all our our five bullets did a really good
job keeping us in the contest, defending probably a slightly
below pass course. So yeah, I thought for the most part,
you know, a good outing. But if we can tidy
up our batting, string a few more partnerships together, we
can put a bit more pressure on a good England side.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
So look, you were involved in that. You scored a
piler on what was that eighty eight one hundred plus balls?
You're out there, so you got that job done. So
the partnership's down. Maybe hard for you to look and
to criticize, Amar was the point comment? Was that a
case of the England bowlers getting on top or was
it some form of lack of action from the batters
out there when do you think it came down to
(02:55):
what was the crux of the inability to actually get
these partnerships going.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
I think it's probably just a very different surface to
what we get at home. You know, it kept pretty
low early and was slow, and I think sometimes, you know,
we've got some an experience in our low order and
they're probably coming off playing from a New Zealand where
you can start straight away in your innings at the
back end and feel like you can score straight away,
whereas it wasn't really the case in that sort of innings,
and you've just got to be a bit more selective.
(03:21):
I guess about the shots that you're playing and we're
looking to score. And I think if we look for
honest with ourselves, we probably played across the line a
little bit too much in our betting innings and we
saw a few dismissals sort of go that way. So
look a little bit more discipline, I think throughout our
whole order. And you know, even for me, there's certainly
things I can improve on. There's a bit slow going
through the middle and could have been a little bit
(03:42):
more proactive to try get the strike turning over a
little bit more so, I think there's lots of things
everyone can do. You know, certainly no one's perfect and
you're aways looking to be better. So yeah, it's just
it's just good learning is different conditions to what we'd
be playing on our home so you know, for some
of our girls who never toured in England before, there's
lots to take out of that game. And like I said,
(04:02):
we don't know that surf. It's going to be luck
when we turn up in Northampton. So yeah, hopefully we're
just in it a depth quicker and you know, play
good shots based on the surface we're playing on.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
I'm sure you all got around need to be tell
after the catch she put down in the gully where
her fingers are pointing apple down, regardless it went down,
she would have been like creased for and after that,
but everyone got around her. You can't point to hear
and go that was your fault, right.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Oh no, absolutely not. You know, she's been going so
well for us and her limited sort of game time
that she's had with the White fans so far, she's
been fantastic with the ball in in the field as well.
And look, everyone drops catches. I think the best cricketers
male or female. You know, people drop catches and no
one means to do it, and you know, that's really
hard for a young player to take I think in
that sort of situation. And yeah, sometimes it's probably easier
(04:49):
for a senior player to drop catches, you know, because
you have that experience. You know that it's just part
of cricket. And yeah, she was absolutely gutted, and you know,
I just gut it for it because it's not a
nice feeling. But no one means to drop catches. You know,
that wasn't There's so many moments in the game. You know,
that could have been the winning, all losing. So yeah, look,
(05:10):
she's obviously disappointed, but we got around her and hopefully
she can pick herself back up and worry about the
next match. And you know, we know she's going so well,
so hopefully she can take lots of confidence in other
areas of your game into that next game.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Maybe the conditions of the athletes, so you're going to
run a full eleven? Anything changed, do you believe since
that first game?
Speaker 3 (05:31):
You know, the squad's in a really good place fitness
levels wise. So yeah, I'm not sure what the coaches
have in mind for the next game. But yeah, look,
I think the great thing is we've got fifteen fit
and ready players to choose from, so I think that's
a good place to be in as a group. And yeah,
probably we've got we don't have a huge turnaround between
these three o the eyes, so yeah, it'll just be managing,
(05:52):
managing people and making sure everyone's in a good space.
We've obviously got one eye on the TEA twenty World
Cup in a month's time, so yeah, look, I'm not sure.
I'm not sure what the coaching selectors have got on mine,
but every rue's in really good space physically, so yeah,
which is really exciting. And yeah, I thought, as I said,
I thought we were competitive for a large point of
that game. As if you think so tidy up. So yeah, hopefully, hopefully,
(06:15):
you know, we'll see everyone in a good place to
be selectors. And I know that people are training hard
and then putting their hands up and want to be
in that eleven, which is yeah, which is a really
positive sign for the group.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Right, I'm coaching from the cheap seats. Get that one
eye off the t twenty World Cup and you put
both eyes on the game coming up. Okay, do you
hear me.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Well, no, absolutely, these games, you know, the ODI series,
every ODI that we play as a white fans group,
they're part of the ICC Women's Championship and their points
for qualification to the next fifty eight World Cups. So
you know, we know how important each of these audio
games are for us. But obviously we've got fast bowlers
and there's load management and things things like that that
(06:56):
probably takes place at some point. But yeah, look, we
you know, we want to win every odio game and
every game we play for New Zealand rally, but these
audio games sort of carry that more importance for us
with with those points towards qualification for the next fifty
over World Cups. So yeah, no, don't worry about that,
do We're well focused on these games.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
And one last thing, it didn't work out well, but
there were some There was some wonderful plays in that
from various athletes. You, of course, being one of them,
you're probably a bit filthy. You didn't get to the
three figures, but so be it. Brit Elling was impressive, though,
wasn't she Yeah she was great.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
You know, she's again hasn't played heats at international cricket,
but she's she's loving it and you know, getting better
every day that she's in our environment, which is awesome.
And to be honest, I thought all of our bowlers
did a really good job to keep us in that contest.
You know, Rosemary Mayor has had a great couple of
months so far with the ball. You know, she's keeping
it really tight.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
With that searing and and swinging Yorker, and towards the end,
it was her, wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Yeah, that was her. She's a very very good bowler,
rose And I think she's just had a little bit
of trouble and probably the last few years with injuries
and that's probably just part of being a fast bowler unfortunately.
But yeah, it's great to have her on the park.
She's an absolute weapon. And yeah, look, I think, as
I said, all of our bowlers did a great job
for us in the last game to keep us in
the contest when we probably didn't have quite enough runs
(08:17):
on the board.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
All of the regards we can muster here at News
