The Black Caps are heading home pleased with a 3-2 series victory over the West Indies.
New Zealand lost the fifth and final match by two wickets in Barbados, with the Windies chasing down the 269 run target with 15 balls to spare.

No, it doesn't.

First half was you know, we thought we had we
thought we had enough on the board, but they sort
of came out pretty hot and the power player tried
to sort of knock a decent amount of the total
off on that first ten overs. Knowing that, I guess
our spinners have done, you know, an unbelievable job through
the middle, and you know, we fought all the way
to the end there getting the made down. It was
a pretty exciting finish again, but yeah, unfortunately we couldn't
(01:02):
get the job done. But series when so boys are
pretty heavy.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Been bookended by defeat, which is not the nicest way
to look back at it, But let's just more expand
on the entire series. The biggest lessons out of that
because it's a team with developing players, a team of
some of the dirty old school in it as well.
It's all part of that wonderful development of New Zealand
cricket right across every format. So from that, have you
taken a lot of positives away? Nick?
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Yeah, of course, like you said, it's sort of you know,
book ending the series with losses is an ideal, but
I felt like we adapted really quickly. And you know,
the pitchers in Guyana were tough, they were low scoring affairs,
and like you said, you know, the squad was sort
of made up of some some pretty experienced guys. You know,
Mitch Stain had brought up a third three hundredth game
for New Zealand Today, which was pretty cool, and then
(01:50):
it was you know, made up with guys like myself
have you know, only played a handful of games.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
So it was an awesome mix.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
A lot of learning going on, and yeah, the boys
were just really happy to be able to get over
the line in the series.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Yeah, rough idea about what it was going to be
like out there because what did you hit your sixty
odd offline and then you hit it around about eighty
I think it was so you had a reasonable strike
rate and the guys out there with you, and when
you had Tom lath in the same kind of drill,
so you knew it was going to be a difficult defense.
I'd suggest.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Yeah, they won the toss and wanted to have a bowl,
so they obviously knew that.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
You know, chasing under lights was was a little bit easier.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
I saw a stat around the last you know, year
or two that ninety percent of the games had been
one chasing there, So yeah, it was you know, we
we had a platform stead at about one hundred and eighty
for three. You know, if we'd kicked on and maybe
had I don't know, two twenty after forty three down,
we might have been able to push for a for
a score around three hundred, which probably would have been
(02:49):
too many. But yeah, we sort of had those partnerships building,
but we weren't able to have that sort of big
hundred run plus partnership was probably where where we fell short.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
What are your personal takeaways, Nick, What did you pick
up out of that tour?
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Yeah, I missed the first three games, you know, I
was running drinks, but you know, you're still always watching
some of the best players in the world go about
their business, you know, whether it's in our team or
any other team. So just learning how they adapted to
different conditions. And yeah, I think this is my third
or fourth tour away now, and you know, each.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Place you play, you're learning new things.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
And if you do have the you know, the the
chance to come back to these places, that will be
just implementing them as quick as possible.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
When you do get the chance to go out and.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Have another crack, well you didn't play those first few games,
but you're still a part of the tour, and that's
the important part of it. You've got to leving guys
out there playing, but a whole group of men picking
each other up and learning as they go. And if
you consider that just being a passenger, you shouldn't be there.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Nick Kelly, Yeah, well I probably wouldn't have played a
game if Daryl haven't hadn't twingers growing. So you know,
that was a bit of a shame for him to
miss out the last two games, but it was bloody
awesome to get a run in the last.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Two and yeah, like you said, you know you are
part of a collective unit.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
But yeah, I think you know the group, like we
spoke about the just an hour or so ago when
we were wrapping up, was you know, not many teams
come over here and win one day series, so to
be able to do that was pretty pleasing.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
That big strength. Do you think of your side? Can
you target any particular area or player. We think that
made the difference because they're starting off getting beaten in
that first game, it's pretty hard to dig you way
back from.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
Yeah, I think the spinners sat in a bracewell and Lennox.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Lenox got named out of the series.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
I think those guys obviously they are pretty spin friendly
conditions with the wickets being as they were, but you
know you've still got to go out and put them
all in the right areas.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
So yeah, I think those three guys that are hell
of a job.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
And the batters, you know, they probably wouldn't get as
much praise as they should have. You know, they would
have liked because the the wickets were so tough and
the they were so low scoring.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
But you know, guys stood up throughout, which was pleasing.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Just survival, which you can't underestimate the power of sticking
around for a while. And then Jayden Lennox and I
spoke to him and he's like a constant terroristman, pretty
much like yourself, Nick, And he presented what he does best.
And I think you talk about tweaking and turning the ball,
it was one game where he didn't turn it at all.
(05:33):
He just basically bowled it straight right the way around him.
But very very very hard to happen. The strength that
you more inexperienced guys get out of this, you take
forward to whatever format, be it T twenty or Test
cricket of one DA Internationals.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Yeah, of course, you know the group are coming off
a hell of a Test win in England obviously, so
they brought some great energy into the tour.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
And yeah, like you said, Jaden was outstanding.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
And I think, yeah, like what you said about not
not turning the ball too much, I think when you
got Mitchell South and you're at the other end, you know,
both left arm tweakers and he's turning the ball a mile,
I think, you know, the perception might be that you know,
he might have been doing similar things.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
So I think that you know the way they work together.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Yes, they both you know bowl left arms spent, but
they're two very different bowls and they bounced off each
other exceptionally.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Well, we got a ball on tandem. Don't you do
what the other guy isn't doing? And you'll find the
