Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks. It'd be.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Horror news for the Hurricanes. I'm sorry, horror news for
the Hurricanes. When the team lists were revealed the upcoming
round of Super Rugby Pacific this weekend, it was noted
that starback Cam Royguard had been ruled out up to
three to four weeks. This could potentially see the Hurricanes

(00:34):
finish the regular season without, for argument's sake, their most
influential player. Tell me I'm wrong. Former All Black and
Hurricanes halfback Petty Wearepoot joins us now to discuss that loss.
Good evening, Petty, How are you?

Speaker 3 (00:51):
You're not too bad in yourself? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
No, no, good, good, good and enjoying my job every day.
Why wouldn't you? At least I'm not a coach and
have to deal with no Camroyguard. Let's cut straight to
the chase. How important the Hurricanes are looking great right now?
But how important to the campaign is Cam roy Guard.
They will survive, but this will really interrupt what they
do right?

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Yeah, I guess in terms of you know, preparation leading
into playoff stages of the competition.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Rather than him being up for three weeks, whether he's
being rested or not.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
Put in terms of that, you know, having his input
leading up to playoff stages of the competition will be
it's going to be something that they need to keep
a close eye on just to make sure that he's
still sharp. No doubt he will be, but it's just
what they do to keep him involved as he's a

(01:48):
pretty integral part of.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
The What do you do?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
What do you do in situations there back in the
day when you were playing, when you had a key
role on that, How did you stay involved when you
were out with injury or suspend it, whatever it might
have been. How did you engage and involve yourself put
yourself in that process.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Oh, you're still involved in a lot of the team
conversations preparation, and you know, you might see something different
that a few of the other leaders don't see tendencies
that the opposition have. So having his eye over things
and his i Q around around things is huge and

(02:27):
you've got to take that into factor so that whoever's
jumping in in that role as a NUN, they need
to know what they're going up against and what opportunities
that presents. Itself if you're not the type of player
that plays similar to Camero reguards. So you know, he's
still going to huge role to play in terms of

(02:50):
helping us the boys that are going to be playing
in the next sort of two three weeks while he's
out in jined.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Eddie Nadi has got the job. It's quite a re
shuffled Hurricanes team to take on Mowana Pass if you care.
Some people out with injuries. But genuinely, I think the
laid Law said it was kind of an almost a
bye taking into account that the lack of power that
Mowana have. I mean, it's probably a bit of a risk,

(03:20):
isn't it playing a slightly lesser team up against these guys.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
Yeah, I guess you lose sort of their continuity that
they've built, you know, in terms of their play. Bringing
in different guys or new guys that's not quite in
their starting role can disrupt it because they're still trying
to find their own feet within their structure of the
game plan. So but I mean, and saying that, you know,

(03:47):
they might have boys that have been involved just sit
on the bench and you know, slowly reintroduce them just
in case that they're back end of this campaign.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Those boys need to be brought in at less.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
It's not too much of an ask sort of to
be put on the spot that they've had that experience,
that that opportunity to play, to build a bit of
confidence within their souls, understand the game plan better and
be able to execute what they need.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
So I don't particularly think it'll be a walk in
the park. We'll see that with Mina.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
You know, with all the distractions going on in the background,
they've put in a pretty solid effort the last couple
of weeks.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
They just don't have the stamina at the moments to
back that up.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
You can understand what's going on in the background, right, Perry.
Nothing to do with cam Royd Garb, but it's a
pretty stressful time for everybody involved in that camp. They
don't know if they're coming or going, or they're being saved.
So the focus axtity on the football. You feel for them,
don't you.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Oh, you do hundred percent. You know, those boys have
seen an opportunity.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
In a competition that's well quite a few people have
been saying that it's going downhill, But I mean for
them to be involved in this competition as massive. You know,
there's no other place where you can get an opportunity
to play in Super Rugby, you know, and some of
them might not have got this opportunity. Some sort of
play a bit of NPC and this is a big

(05:17):
step up from NPC to Super Ugby. So I know
a lot of those boys will be playing, I guess
for another opportunity, whether whether they get I mean a
lifeline or not, whether it'll be playing as hard as
they can just to push their case to show that
they capable of playing in a competition like this.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Let's just roll back to the lack of cam royguard
playing me a very important part of the Hurricanes team.
The whole team doesn't rely on him though. Yeah he's
a pivot, he's a very important one. But what part
of what you've seen in the Hurricanes so far this
season suggests to you that they are favorites for the
title because they're well, they're playing great football right now.

(06:01):
They're are oppressible team almost What do you like about them,
Perry that you've seen.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
I think it's the fact that they move the ball around.
There's not many teams that do. I think the closest
potentially would be the Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
But what I have seen is they do the hard
work up the middle, and then when there's opportunities that
they see that they're not afraid to shift the ball.
Plus their skill set like throwing long passes under pressure
and pretty much act pretty accurate with.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
Those that skill set.

Speaker 4 (06:36):
So you know, there's some of that's been pretty impressed.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
I've been pretty impressed about the hard work that they
do off the middle.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
But they're not only that, you know, they're they're playing
and shifting the ball and they're using a bit.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
More with to their game.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
Their counter attacks been pretty huge in terms of how
they bring the ball back in whether they're attacking or
if they're trying to play percentage foot and kick it
down the other end and wait for them to stuff
it up yet.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
So that's what I've been pretty impressive with. But not
only that, you know, their defense has been pretty solid.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Well, it helps if you don't let people score, you're
gonna be in a much better position to actually win.
How else do you like in super rugby, who's actually
going to threaten the Hurricanes from what you've seen, because
you don't know what happens in a wash up. But
out of the other super teams that are out there,
who poses the biggest threat do you think to the
Hurricane success.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
Ah, Look, they had a tough battle up against the Blues,
so there's definitely a team that they'll need to be
wary of, you know, when when they're firing, they're pretty
hard to beat as well, So it's making sure that
they get those opportunities right.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Chiefs would be the other one.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
I mean they had that they went to Golden Point
and lost and Golden Points, so I guess those two
teams at the moment, and then obviously going down to
the Crusaders for the last for their for their next
game too is going to be a difficult one, you know,
New House and they'll be wanting to try and keep

(08:09):
if they haven't from this weekend one hundred percent records.
So probably those those three franchises will be the toughest ones.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
And looking across the half backs that are around, plainly
cams right ahead of everybody else when it comes to
all Black Sex and that's a while away yet, we
can't count Checkens. But out of the other crop of
half backs that are floating rounds, anyone excite you the
lights of the Ratima or not hote them? Where do
you think they'd go? Who suits the next cab off
the RNK Because it's strengthening for no I hope them

(08:41):
right now the way he's been playing.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
Oh, I was pretty impressed with Noah on the again
actually against Hurricanes, you know, reading defense systems and then
his back back up play up the middle. There's a
pretty fun and then you look at everyone else in
that position, you know they're all playing their trade really
well and it's making things.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
A bit difficult.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
But I think you know, when you get your foot
in the door, you know that you've got to make
sure that you keep your foot in that door, and
you know that door doesn't close on us.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
So boys like.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
Both are doing everything possible to make sure that they
stay active and putting some solid performances. And I think
that's only one performance is going to seal the deal
for them. So there's actually quite a few players across
the board in the competition, but I guess it will
just be down to what Sylar for each individual plays.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
And exactly what the new coach actually wants, and of
course he'll get what he wants. And with that, pretty weepoo.
Always a pleasure, mate, Thanks so much for talking to
us here on that news talk ZB you look after yourself.

Speaker 3 (09:52):

The belief is simple: fearless dialogue can transform fear into courage, and courage into change. When fear dominates the headlines, this show digs deeper. Because information, debate, and conversation don’t just ease fear, they give us power to shape the future.
