The Super Rugby Pacific Grand Final has arrived – the champion set to be crowned tonight.
The Hurricanes are hosting the Chiefs at Wellington’s Hnry Stadium – aiming to put an end to their title drought stretching back to 2016.
Hurricanes Centre Billy Proctor joined Adam Cooper to preview the clash.

matter we look on the team sheets, it's a great battle.

One of those is in the midfield and I can't
wait to see how All Blacks Billy Proctor and Jordy
Barrett go up against Quintu Pyre in particularly on the
Chiefs side. So let's head into the Hurricanes camp now midfield.
Billy Procter as with us, who's playing as eighty third
Hurricanes game this evening, never played a final in those
eighty two matches so far, because the Hurricanes haven't been
in a Grand final since twenty sixteen. Billy, good morning,

thanks for joining us, mate, and I guess after two
big wins in the playoffs so far, how are you
just trying to make well the past week? But also
tonight feel as normal as possibly as you build up
for it.

Yes, you know we have kind of been treating it
the same as any other week. You know, we have
kept the same same week structure and you know, been
going to the same motions getting everything we need to.
You know, everyone knows what's coming. You know, the boys
will do what they need to be in the right

spot as.

A long time Hurricane are born and bred Welling Tony.
And though you must be incredibly excited.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Too, Yeah, for sure, I can't wait. You know, something
that we haven't been able to do, you know for
the time that I've been here and to other have
it at home as well as you know, the cherry
on top. So I'm really looking forward to it, and
you can't wait for it to come by and get
out there.

But you've only missed a couple of games this entire season.
You're close to one thousand minutes for the whole year,
which is near the top of the list in terms
of game time for the Hurricanes this year. You and
Jordi Barrett in the midfield obviously been one of the
many high performing pieces that have made up the Hurricanes'
success through twenty twenty six so far. How proud have
you been of what you two particularly, but others who

have slotted in during the year have been able to contribute.

Yeah, you know, we're we're happy, well, yeah, happy, how
how it's been going, and you know been yea happy
with the performance they've been putting out there. And you know,
I think a whole team, the whole team can can
probably say that, you know, the way that we've been going.
So yeah, it's you know, put us in the position
that we're in, and you know, that's all we can

ask for at this time. And you know, as long
as we go out there and do what you know,
we know we can do, I'm sure we'll be you know, happy,
come come back into that game.

What has been the game changer for the Hurricanes this year?
Pulling off consistently amazing performances, scoring a competition high points
and try tally and comparing this to previous years where
your playoff runs have been cut.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Your Yeah, I think the combination of a lot of things.
You know, being at home obviously helps, you know, not
having to travel in familiar places, you know, playing in
front of our crowds and playing in our stadium, which
you know where we're used to familiar the team being healthy.
You know, for for the most part, every team is
going to have injuries, but you know, we we don't
(03:26):
have too many in that term. It's a lot of
a lot of our boys are out there playing, which
you know is obviously going to help. And then probably experience.
You know, a lot of us have come through together,
have been in the team for you know, a decent
time now, and you know, you build combinations, you know,
through through the years I've playing together. So I think
(03:48):
it's a combination of of all those things, you know,
which has helped. And then you know, obviously you know
shown by the by the way that we've been playing
this year.

But as I said before, Born and bred Welling Tony
and long time Hurricane and lifelong fan of the club.
The last Grand Final featuring Hurricanes was ten years ago
here in Wellington when the team won its only title.
Were you there that night, Yeah, I was.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
I was at that game. I do remember that. I
was in the stand. My brother obviously was playing, you know,
and that was that was a sold out game too,
and it was you know, it was awesome to be
there and you know, witnessed that the Hurricanes first title
and you know, It's it's cool that it's ten years
apart in the in the same duty that my brother
(04:34):
was in and you know, hopefully we can get the
same result. So I went to last I remember that
ten years ago, went to the sheds and you know,
got to experience it with him, which is pretty cool.
So yeah, hopefully I can do the same thing. Well,
us as a team can do the same thing.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
This weekend, you played big matches Test match rugby included.
Where do you expect a Super Rugby Final to rank
in amongst some of the other big games you've played
in your career, including some of those massive NPC finals
with the Lions.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
He'll be up there, you know, I'll be up there
with some of the some of the Test matches I've
played and all Black Jersey. Maybe I'll come back to
your depending result. Yeah, decide where it goes after that.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
The midfield battle huge for this one tonight as well.
It is one of the chief strengths as well. The captain,
Quintu Pyre is in some red hot form. How have
you prepared specifically for that match up?
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Yeah, just as you said, just prepare for you know
what what they can bring. You know, on both sides
of the ball and you know obviously both the midfield
and you know, the whole back line. They have you know,
some some awesome talent and some great players that you
(05:51):
know we've previewed and had a look at. You know
what they do well and where we can you know,
apply our own pressure. So looking forward to it. You
know there they've they also love to throw the ball
around and you know they love getting the board to
their outsides in space and you know the things that
they've been able to do with it. The season has
(06:14):
been pretty cool to watch. So it's our job this
weeking to to you know, make make it not as
I guess not not allow them all that space and
let them use their flair and you know carve up
on the outside channels. You know, our job to mitigate that.
So yeah, looking forward to the challenge and where yeah,
(06:39):
as I said, looking forward to it, and you can't wait.

And speaking of flair, the Canes this year have scored
some incredible tries using that open play. The backline has
been on fire. Do you expect that space to be
available for you again in a final like this or
where you need to change things up a bit given
the nature of the contest.

I don't think we'll be changing too much. You know,
obviously there's factors that will influence other decisions, whether that
be whether you know how the game's going. You know,
there's a lot of things that you know, come into
play when you're making decisions around what we're going to do.
But do I think we're going to We're going to

be hitting in there with a positive mindset, you know,
to back and use what we have been all year
and you know what's been working for us, so you
know it's got us this far and I don't see
us changing too much, all right?

big game days like these? How do they play out
for you aside from chatting to us? Do you manage
to keep it out of your mind through the day
or do all focuses and everything leads to what happens

Nah, I'm pretty cruisy. Yeah, it won't be up too much,
so I'd be you know, probably piked up on the
couch and you know, just just relaxing watching TV or
movies or something. But you know, my game d is
pretty cruisy, trying don't think too much about the game
until until probably hitting in. But yes it's a relaxing
