Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB Talk.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Some skidding on the dirt at the Speedway. I got
like a Parker Later tonight New Zealand Modified Grand Prix,
Auckland Street Stock Champs as well. It's the popular night
of entertainment and Toomack and Makoto. Brad Lane's going to
be racing tonight. He won the Modified Dirt Cup last
weekend and is with it now morning. Brad A congratulations
(00:34):
on the win.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah, yeah, cheers, bloody, marvelous mate it. It was a
good weekend and some good hard racing.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
So the difference I suppose he finished, which helps, But
what do you think lifted you above everybody else?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Yeah? That was our first time being there, actually running
at the new facility, so such a cool track and
the way the new tracks laid outs is awesome. So
I guess we just the track conditions were a little
bit or we found them a little bit deceiving, So
I guess we just got our handle on top of that,
maybe a little bit better than everyone else. Well.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
We talked to was Cody Hutter last week around this
and he was talking the same thing about getting used
to the nature of the track because it evolves, it develops.
Because it's so new, it's quite difficult for people to
get a handle on. How long did it take you
before you were comfortable, if indeed you actually ever were
out there.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, we were pretty close straight off the bat somewhat,
but just trying to trying to get the rpm right
for the engine with the engine works, because yeah, like
you said, tracks so different. It's more like almost like
an American style track where you sort of just hammer
down and you're using the brake just to sort of
turn the car. So once we sort of figured that
out and we're and we were driving the track right, Yeah,
(01:47):
we got on top of it.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Now you got history, right, You've won then a handful
of times, I believe.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yeah, we've won the Grand Prix. We won it last
year actually for the first time. Prior to that, I
think we'd finished third five or so times in the road.
So so to get our hands on that trophy last
year was pretty cool. And obviously we'll try and go
back to back this weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
What are you running it? Just to describe your vehicle,
What are you spending all of your kids education money on.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Yeah. So it's a space frame type chassis, like a
very similar to a sprint Car's got a small block
shaving it, cast iron, carb rated, you know, it's got
big horsepower, big wheels, big wing, big aerodynamics, and they're
just they're out of control, men. There a whole lot
of noise, not much weight, and you're just holding on
for dear life.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Power to weight ratio better than an F one car right,
oh close to.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Unfortunately we're not, but yeah, very close.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
To when you do this, and we're speaking with Cuddy
last week about how much it actually costs them. So
I'm joking about stealing from your children because that's hardly fair.
But a pricey enough sport. Do you managed to do
this on the smell of an oily rag?
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Or?
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
We make most of the parts for the cars ourselves,
and a lot of it's done on sponsorship, you know,
So we probably run run a season on twenty twenty
five grand type things. So yeah, definitely not up there
with some of the high rollers, but we obviously seem
to get the job done. So, as it said plenty
of times before, most of it's most of the winning's
(03:11):
done in the shed, you know, yeah, making sure everything's
good to go.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Your attitude when you go out there and drive, are
you cool? Hit a driver? You're a crazy angry man,
like you're in traffic and new Market on Friday night.
I mean, what's your way of dealing with it?
Speaker 3 (03:25):
I'd say, at the end of the day, we're all
entertainers out there, so we've got to put on a
show for the crowd. I'd say I've got a cool head.
But you know there's times that it doesn't prevail, So
just hammer down and try and get to the front.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Where's the competition from? Who do you look at and
go you worry me?
Speaker 3 (03:43):
There's been you know, there was obviously Cody and another
competitor from Hempny Brett Parsons. They were run both running
good last last weekend. And there's a couple coming up
as I think there's one coming up from Wearrington and
another one from Stratford so and they're hard charges too,
so so it should be some good close racing.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
As far as the track is concerned, it's beat it down.
How much has it change over the time you haven't
been there? Is it constantly evolving? Because the weather has
been pretty good, isn't it over the last week in Auckland.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yeah. Yeah, so hopefully the track crew there have been
putting on a whole lot of water. Supposedly it's not
meant to be too shut up the weather, so we
just we'll figure that out when we get there and
we have a look at the track and make our
setup changes accordingly.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Let's hope your victory can carry on from the modified
Dirt Cap through to what's happening a White cutouck A
Park this evening and he's going to Modified Grand Prix.
Brad Lane, thanks so much for your time.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
You go well, yeah, cheers mate, Thanks thanks for putting
our sport and our and our class out there too.
You know, every little bit helps.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Hey what about it? Does this help? Who's your main sponsor?
Who helps put together this campaign?
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Ye? Maye. We've got a few of them on there,
but I've just got ale of big ones Professional Door Services, Ripco, Huntley,
Machinery House, Ediscontainas and HDL.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
There you go, bro, help you pay some bills as well.
You go hard, Brad, Thank you mate, Cheers see you later.
