Dave Rennie’s era of the All Blacks got off to a strong start last week with a 34-32 win over France at Christchurch’s One NZ Stadium.
It was the opening round of the inaugural Nations Championship, and now they’re heading to Wellington for their second clash – this time against Italy.
Despite losing to Japan last week, the All Blacks aren’t writing Italy off as an ‘easy beat’.
Hooker for the Kiwi side, Codie Taylor joined D’Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash.

a nation that, based on what happened to the Six Nations,
is actually on the rise finally, and you wouldn't really
say an easy beat. Well, relitigate that. After the game,
we'll see Cody Taylor starting at Hogo for the ABS
and Cody joins us. Now, good morning, Cody, Hey, there

go very well, what about yourself? It's what people want
to know. They don't care about me, they care about you.
This is test number two into the Rene, the Reny regime,
if you will, shaping a bit more settled now after
that first out, the first hit up.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, I think it's been a good couple of weeks
in camp with the boys and with the coaching group.
Obviously got a result last week, so we're looking to
build off that and what will be a tough at
the least side.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Of mine, how I would say difficult because you're a professional,
but moving into a new camp with NZR change its
spots completely. You've got new management, you've got new coaches,
except of course Jason Ryan and traditional start of the
All Black season. It's always difficult to combine and blend
everybody and get them on the same page. And now
(01:45):
you're under a new regime. How they felt that has
gone that actually understanding of what this new All Black
side is all about.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
I think it's been pretty seamless to be honest, Like
the coaching group that's come in and just coming and
pretty much structured things the way they want to want
it to be, well, you know, with on field and
offield stuff. So it's been really easier just to come
in and sort of give an understanding of what they
want from you from a personal role and within a team,
(02:13):
and then you just go about your business. So it's
been quite easy to be honest, Well, you're.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
A season professional. You kind of hope you'd say that, right,
it's not the first time you've had a new coach.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
There's been I've had had a few coaches in here too.
They all have their great things about them that they
want to try and you know, achieved with the group.
But I think that's very much the same with this group,
and I've just been impressed with the way they want
to play the game and sort of build off you
know what what the All Books has done in the past.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
You've got some your tweaks planning out of the first
match front of mine. For yourself, what do you have
to adjust or change from what you put down last week.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
I don't know too much feedback from the coaster. I
suppose it's a good thing. But look, I just lastly
it was a really good tax at you know, the
ball in hand, and then I'm going about this business.
I think with Etily, you know they've got a great scrum,
so making sure we front up in that in that
area of the game. They've got a really good lineout too,
So just set piece really for someone like myself and
(03:20):
my role and then just get around the field and
get sucking them at work.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
More things change, the more they stay the same. It's
not a great deal of difference. What about the rest
of the team. What's been impressed on them this week
with the coaching staff based on what happened last week
against France, I.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Think we just have worked a lot on a bit
of some of the defensive stuff. You know, we thought
we let ourselves down in that part of the game,
didn't apply enough pressure without the ball, and that's why
fight scored as many points as it did. So it's
very much the same. They have a great attack in site,
so if we're going to have to make sure we
shut that down and fly a bit more pressure and
(03:58):
we don't have the ball.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
People are pretty keen to right Italy off because they
haven't got the greatest requel. But if you look at
back the last year the Six Nations that they're not
they're not back with this team anymore. Are they actually
do represent clear danger?
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah? You know, like you say, look at the Six
Nations last year that the results they've had, you know,
tipping over a couple good sides there, and they've been
the most improved team probably in the last four or
five years, I believe. So yeah, definitely is going to
be an easy cass.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
You've got a really hot not you personally with the
All Blacks track record at Wellington isn't great? Have you
Have you talked about that because I think last time
you are that it wasn't pretty, was it?
Speaker 3 (04:36):
It wasn't you know, it was a tough, tough game.
But no, we haven't looked. It's another test put on
all black jersey. Our focus is going going out there
and making sure that we work on things that we've
been trying to do this week at training. So uh, yes,
there's there's an away is there, But we don't need
to give it any more fuel.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
As a as a mat tour on the side. Yeah,
you know, seeing your play and one of the leaders
in that, how has it been working with the you
guys that have come on through. I mean you take
you take away look at some of the young guys.
I think, well, they've they've absolutely folded into this nice
and simply. But from your point of view, what have
you had to do to assess these guys to build
as All Blacks early doors?
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Oh they're really good. You know, they're taking in a
lot of things. It's a lot of information to take them.
When you first come into this group, it can be
quite daunting, but I think the environment has provided them with,
you know, a reasonably comfortable platform to soak it all up.
And the boys are awesome. I think across the board the
team is in a good place in terms of culture
and stuff, and they seem to be themselves, which is
(05:43):
always a good sign.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
How's the optimism, because that's your buzzword, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Yeah, it's been turned around a bit. Oh that's good mate.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
You know, we're.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
We just want to play all back footy. But on
what has been and yeah, I suppose just now now
the things that the coaches want us to want us
to achieve and do. So it's all there was put
on a field, yeah, in.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
All Black footy. And I liked the speed. I've always
talked about speed and accuracy being something that All Black
teams have been very good at. And even though she
was a bit messy at some stages last week, we're
seeing a lot of that coming back again. This willingness
to attack, this speed, this accuracy, This is what we
love about the All Blacks. And let's not forget the
brutality that's in there as well. It's shaping quite nicely,
(06:34):
even after only eighty minutes.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, yeah, it's only been one test and we're pretty
happy with the way things that have moved already. So yeah,
we've just got to back it up and we're playing
a tough side. They'll be trying to do the toe opposite.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
So yeah, pretty exciting year for you. It's only just
started off. It was relentless. It pretty much goes to Christmas,
doesn't it.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Yeah, so a long season, a lot of a lot
of games, a lot of tests, but as a privilege
man like this nation series and then heading over to
South Africa with a pretty special experience for a lot
of the boys. You know, there are some boys that
probably haven't even experienced what that's like. So it isn't
going to be easy, and there'll be their moment. There'll
be moments when we might not get it right. But yeah,
(07:19):
it's a I suppose it's a great a great season
to build on and then look forward to what is
next year.

Really looking forward to the rest of the season, right
the way through to Christmas. I'm not leaving the side
