We’re rolling into the second week of Super Rugby with a blockbuster New Zealand derby.

The Chiefs are heading down to Dunedin to face off against the Highlanders this evening.

The Highlanders will be aiming to keep their momentum going, after last weekend’s victory over the defending champion, the Crusaders.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Let's get amongst a Super Rugby big game later on tonight,
Highlanders take on the Chiefs under the roof and Dneed
and Corey Brown he's the attacking coach the Highlanders. He's
with us now morning to you. Cory's welcome to the show.
You'd be pretty pumped of what you're going to provide tonight, right.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yeah, definitely made excited. You know, around round one we
had a really good plan and went out and executed
it and probably got them had a really good time.
So no, we're looking forward to.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
That game last week. And look, I say this because
you know, hand on heart, I'm I'm a Red and
Black fan. But people are kind of writting you off.
But with the loss of a couple of key players,
you ignored that, didn't you, And you just did what
you could do with one of the most exciting back
lines in Super rugby.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Yeah like that, that was really pleasing.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
And no one really wants to go in a season
and lose Fabian Holland and Dylan Pleagure before you even start.
So but what I thought, we've done really well. Is
that the guys have stepped up and really took their opportunities,
the guys that come in for those injured players, and
we wish them to guys all the best for their
recovery and unfortunately not going to see them this year.

(01:25):
You know, we had as I see, we had a
really good plan and boys really fronted I thought, physically
and mentally and yeah, really took it to the Crusaders.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah at home again with the mad O Week crowd
behind you, and there's so much fun to watch. Tell
those lunatic teenagers and early twenties, how much does that
support g your guys on because I've watched a lot
of rugby there and it's a phenomenal.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Place to watch. The zoo's, the zoos and entertaining.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
All right, it's a bit worrying when your son's in there,
so that's that's always the trouble. But now hopefully they
go out again tonight and rip them to it. The
boys love it like it's a great place, the best
place to play rugby in New Zealan and I believe
even in the world. Under the roof for you no
window rain and both teams just love playing so hopefully
that's what we see tonight.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Well, it reminds me when you're setting up the top
there are we but not quite of Athletic Park back
in the day up in the Millard Stand. It's steep
airs up there, but the views astonishing.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, it's a good place to play footy. And you've
watched a fee able to footy here as well, and
yeah it's awesome. So yeah, I'm sure the players are
excited to get out there and play against a good
Chief side.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Right, what do you have to bring to this fexture?
The Chiefs will be feeling pretty good after what they
did to the Blues. You would have learned a lot
from last week. What do you need to deliver?

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah, well, I've sort of had the word over us,
especially last year. They're really physical side, really direct and
physical and got a really good kicking game. So we
just got to we know what's what's coming, but we've
got to be able to throw a few punches ourselves
as well. So it's going to be an exciting game
and hopefully the voice front up and.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Out of the players from last week, you've got a
reasonable quiver to work with. Are you making many adjustments?
At all.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
No, not really, just with Angus Tavia with the situation
that he's gone through at the moment. So that's that's
been a sort of a forced adjustment. But you know,
the next man up really and our thoughts are worth
Angus and his family at this time, so really difficult
for them, but you know, everyone's really focused on the game.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, that's good. Like, he's such a wonderful character. I
love talking to him, and that really is a horrid story.
And I suppose losing a guy like that up front.
He's only just started a few blokes, but he's talismanic.
He knows the game and he knows how to lead.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Yeah, I guess yeah that when you look at what's
happening and with him and his family, you know, that's
a really small part of and we just hopefully he
takes as much time as he can. Well certainly miss
him and I'm sure the boys will put in the
performance that he'll be proud of.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
What's the noise from boss Man going on at the moment, you,
Jamie Joseph, what's his message been.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
No, he's one hundred percent focused on the hind is
winning and be beating the chiefs. Luck he's he doesn't
talked to much about any all black stuff or anything like.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
I didn't ask about the all black stuff. I wasn't
going to do that. Corey Brown. Next thing, you know,
I'll mentioned that you're Tony Brown's brother.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
You expect that one.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
I always get that. But he's been awesome, Jake this week.
He's got a drive in now mentality in mindset.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Yeah, and that's what you need after the season wasn't
great last year, but you managed to start it off really,
really well. I suppose it wasn't a monkey on your
back last time you won. It was more like a
full blown troop of gorillas, wasn't it.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Well kind of you said, no, Like, we actually put
on some really good performances, but we lost seven or
eight games by less than sort of five or six points,
so we always knew that, if you know, we tidied
up a few things and played a little bit smarter
and another year under our belt. And the leaders have
been outstanding throughout the preseason and even last week. I

(05:08):
thought some of the leadership they showed in crucial moments
in that game against the Crusaders really come through. So
they've been really good and we need a little bit
more of that tonight.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah, And I think along with the heightened this too,
and you look at other teams that the competition is
so close, it is so tight. You're not the only
team who get beaten by only a couple of points.
It happens across the board. So suggestion here is this
is a quality competition, regardless of what the referees think
of the Northern Hemisphere about the way we play right.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
Ah, definitely.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
I think all teams in Super ag love to go
and attack and like it's always going to be tight
in New Zealand derbies, and that's why we love watching
and playing in the New Zealand Derbies. And it comes
down to key moments and winning those key moments and
that's going to be no different tonight when we play
against an awesome Chief side.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Looking forward to it, it's gonna be huge, love the crowd,
love the ground, and look, even though I live just
around the corner from the White Cattle, I'm a Southern boy,
deep at heart from Canterbury, So I'd say go to
the Highlanders, get in there and getting stuck in.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
Cheers made and we're looking forward to it.
