Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
This looks at people.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
The black Caps will play on home soil for the
last time in two months. Today they're hosting Sri Lanka
at Eden Park in the final game of their one
day series. New Zealand of course has wrapped up the
series to nil with this game to spare. But I
guess the question is can Trilanka do what they did
in the T twenty series last week and snatch the
final dead rubber game. Black Caps all rounder Daryl mitchellslus
(00:35):
morning to you, Darrel. Yet happy with where things stands
in the series so far.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Yeah, look obviously nice. I guess to mat the series
up the other day and now they head to eden
Park whish we know as black Caps where we love
playing and Parkers or had some pretty cool and crazy
games that go on there. So it's an exciting time
heading into you.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
We've only had one chance to bat in this series,
the most recent game in Hamilton a thirty eight, a
little bit of a stint with the ball as well,
but you've been happy with how you've been able to
contribute the series.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Look it's just I just keep trying to do the
job for the team whatever it's required. And although we
would I just liked a few more runs in that
last game. It's it's nice at the up top. They
set the platform and that allowed us and milord of
guys to come in and do a job and boys
bowled really well to restrict them to under that score.
So yeah, personally, let's just keep taking them along and
(01:26):
looking forward to getting stuck in to the next one.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
And a bit of a stint in one day crecket.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
We don't often, you know, it's not certainly not the
most prominent of the formats, so I guess ahead of
Champions Trophy hasn't been nice to sort of, you know,
have a bit of a stint playing fifty over cricket
for three matches.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Yeah, look, it's nice to play. We haven't played a
lot of cricket in the last twelve months since the
World Cup, so yeah, to get to media cricket in
with what's coming up and in the next month or two,
it was always nice. But at the same time it's
nice to be playing in front of our home crowd
here in New Zealand, and the cool thing is that
every ground's being packed out, which has been pretty pretty
special to see.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yeah, I mean it has been a busy summer, hasn't it.
Have you enjoyed?
Speaker 3 (02:06):
I guess started off with the England series and then
into white ball stuff against Sri Lanka you're happy with with?
I guess where you're at on the back of the
few series.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
Yeah, look, it's again. It's it's really cool home someers
awesome fun. You know, to travel around the country and
see the likes of well Eden Park or Hagley Oval
basin wherever we are, to see full crowds and see
New Zealand getting behind the black Caps is really cool
and winners players really appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
What is the mindset of the team?
Speaker 3 (02:33):
A series wrapped up and pretty comprehensively too, so going
into a dead rubber how do you make sure you're
taking all the boxes and getting what you want out
of a game like this?
Speaker 4 (02:43):
Look, I think every time for New zeal it's pretty
special and it doesn't ask for ever, so for all
of us making sure we really enjoy experience of again
playing eating Park in front of a big crowd and
representing our country, it's yeah, it's pretty cool time to
be around the Black Cap and they're still firing on
your chest and personally, yeah, I love playing for New Zealand,
(03:03):
so every game is pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
It's been a lot of debutants and white ball cricket
for New Zealand over the past year or so, Darryl,
for the long term health of the side. From an
experienced player like yourself, you're pretty impressed with some of
the young guys that have come through these past twelve months.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
Yeah, it's really cool to see these guys have performed
in domestic cricket for a period of time and we
knew that they're good players and it's cool to see them,
I guess doing it now on the international stage and
they fit it into the group really well and I'm
sure they've thought.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
All of them have got a long, long career ahead
in the black interesting shape. Eten Parkers always for a
batter and I guess a bowler. When you're trying to
sort of restrict the runs, how do you prepare for
the slightly odd shape that it is for cricket.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Yeah, look at obviously brings its own challenges and also
with the wicket usually has a lot of bounce, compared
to other grounds around the country. So it's just adapting
on the fly and working out what is a good
score at Eden Park, which can be a challenge at times.
It's not trying to force it, knowing with the boundaries
so small, So yeah, look it is a challenge. You
(04:06):
can see some really high scoring games and you also
see some quite low scoring games there which was always tight,
so it'll be exciting game to get stuck into.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
And I guess long term, Dowel, you are turning into
as I see one of the one of the more
experienced in the team now taking on I guess extra
leadership responsibilities.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Is that sort of a role year is enjoy taking on.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
I guess you know, helping fear the younger members integrate
into the team and everything.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Yeah, we're very lucky within our group. There a number
of guys who have played a lot from New Zigan
as well as some youngsters. So yeah, I see earlier
I love plays from New Zealand. It means a hell
un a lot and anyway I can help help the
guys around the field, whether it be technically or also
off the field. We've got a pretty tight group. But look,
I think the way Mitch has led the group in
(04:48):
the last few series. He's been awesome and I'm really
enjoying being under his captaincy as well.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
And obviously the Champions Trophy squad being named a bit
later in the weekends. I guess when you look ahead
to that, which isn't too far away sort of in February,
be happy with the momentum that comes to the team
in terms of fifty have a cricket from this series.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Yeah, look, it's alway, isn't it make your mind that
Champion Trophy is coming up? But at the same time,
there are different conditions to what will be experienced at
Eden Park and today as well, So yeah, look, it's
exciting coming to head to a world event and try
and take on the world's best. Yeah, different conditions and
I'm still a little while away. So for me, I'm
just trying to stay where my feed are and excited
(05:28):
about the series ahead.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
I guess looking at that, there's so many tournaments that
you guys head to across the formats and different competitions
you're a part of. Where where does the Champion's Trophy
kind of sit in terms of I guess when you
plan long term, you know how important that is to
want to have a good campaign for it.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Okay, hasn't been around for a while now, so it's
cool to have a champions trophy and it's something where
there's Black Caps, you know, having won it a number
of years ago, it's obviously it's cool to be a
part of. But yeah, as I said, I'm trying not
to look too far ahead. It's still a few weeks away,
and I know I've got a little bit of time
at home before we're preparing and getting ready for that.
(06:04):
So just looking forward to getting stuck into the Yeah, a.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Bit of time.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
That must be nice because I mentioned at the start,
pretty busy congested schedule, isn't it's any downtime, especially on
home soil must be must be much appreciated. Where when
you guys have such busy schedules and time away from home.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Yeah, I love that's the challenge of international curriculus. You
do spend a lot of time away from home, and
as a dab are two little girls that we nice
to go home and spend some time with them. But
also we've got our Super Smash competition going on here
and he's on at the moment, which is called to seeing.
I'm sure you'll see a number of guys out there
representing your provinces over the next few weeks as well.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
All right, well, Darrel already appreciate your time. All the
very best wrapping up the series today at Eden Parker,
and all the very best for the coming few months
of cricket as well. Might always appreciate your time.
