Jayden Lennox: Black Cap bowler on the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies

Fresh from their triumph against England, the Black Caps are back in action with another series. 

They’re set to face the West Indies in a five match ODI series, with the first match beginning at 6:30 tomorrow morning. 

Bowler for the side, Jayden Lennox joined D’Arcy Waldegrave to preview the series.

Fresh off the Test series triumph against the English, black
Caps are back in action with another series. This time
it's a five match, one day it's national series in
the West. In the first match set to begin tomorrow
morning at six point thirty in the A m Jadan
Lennox as a tweaker, a bowler for the side, and
he joins us now, Good morning, Jaden.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Good morning morning.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Heydo doing fantastic, Jadan. Thanks for asking, But it's more
about you looking forward to the tour. There's an understatement
another tour. This is your third overseason engagement. You're rapidly
becoming a tour specialist, don't you.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Yeah, it seems to be a little bit their way
at the moment. Certainly grateful for the opportunity to see
some pretty cool parts of the world in the last
I suppose a year or so with the black Caps
in the a's side, So absolutely no complaints.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
My side, pretty relaxed. Playside suggest that Westindy's it will
be nowhere near as overwhelming as when you played an India.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Right, No, it's pretty it's pretty low key, to be honest,
I was. I was fortunate enough to get a trip
over here last year with the Stags for the GSL,
so relatively foreign conditions at that time. So it's nice
to come back and and sort of know what I'm
walking into, which is.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Nice primary role, Jaden, do you not get smashed over
the park and you know, take some polls for sure,
but what have you been tasked with by the coaching
staff for this tour?

Speaker 3 (01:33):
I think it's probably a matter of just assessing what
the conditions are like first, to be honest, Going on
as one of those places that you never really know
what you're walking into, so it'll certainly be sort of
assessed on the fly and then kind of come up
with a little bit of a plan of attack from there.
But yeah, for me, it's typically keep the game pretty
simple and try and shut the school board down and

(01:54):
kind of wickets I suppose come from semming the flow.
For me, it's a pretty pretty subtle craft, So it's Yeah,
for me, it's it's keeping it as simple as I
can and just executing my basic skill really well.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Another way you say craft, because that's what tweaking's all about.
It's something you build on over years and years and
years until you get to that absolute panacle, and you
must be getting close to that now, Jaden.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah, I think the thing about spin mollon is you
don't have the ability to bowl a bumper or have
too much of that physical aggression, so you've got to
sort of understand what's happening in the game and be
able to read what's happening in front of you. So yeah,
I think I think the last few years especially has
kind of been coming to grips with what that looks

(02:39):
like in different parts of the world and how I
can kind of use my field to be attacking rather
than I suppose be physically attacking like some of the
nasty faces.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
So you touched on it before. You need to restrict,
but primarily you want to attack. You want to use
your defense as a way of taking wickets.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Here, Yeah, I think it's probably they will almost come
hand in hand. I think, like for me, if the
school board's not going anywhere, they the opposition kind of
feel a little bit of pressure and feel like they
have to get the game moving because I think the
thing about one day international cricket, typically you're playing on
pretty good surfaces, and a score of two thirty two
forty is not really going to ever win you a

(03:19):
game because of the batting lineup. So I think the
pressure does come on a little bit faster if you
can figure out a way to sort of restrict runs,
and however you do that through manipulating the field and
obviously different surfaces is going to be pockets at the
ball doesn't seem to travel too so it's kind of
how quickly you can identify that to get a little
bit of a jump on the game.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Contribution wise, you probably have no idea at all how
many games you're going to be playing, but if you've
got a rough idea about what your contribution is going
to look like.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Nah, to be honest, I've got no idea. I kind
of felt like I probably wasn't going to be on
the trip because Santa's here as well, and he's obviously
the one day skipper, So it was a call that
I probably wasn't expecting fun at all, honest. So yeah,
I feel very lucky to well not just lucky, but
very fortunate to be on this one so to be
able to work with him and hopefully get the chance

(04:10):
to play with him and just learn some of his
tricks as well. But yeah, certainly there's never any guarantees
on playing. But yeah, Guyana is pretty pretty conducive to spin.
So if it's not the first one, hopefully the second
or third one here. But yeah, yeah, it's just a
matter of, as I said, just seeing what's in front
of us and sort of come up with an attack
plan with the team.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
The energy in the sheds right now must be off
the hook. You guys are giants and I'm looking back,
of course at what happened in England that come from
behind series victory up against Mother England. That was extraordinary,
What an amazing result, And I think too much emphasis
on what Stokes did or didn't do and the result
itself amongst media and everybody else for the Black Cats

(04:54):
have It's kind have been underplayed, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah? I think it has to be honest. Being in
the group at the moment, there's a hell of a
good feeling and that's infectious. Like coming obviously from New Zealand,
having a couple of months off and just working away
on some bits and pieces at home. Coming into the
group when something special like that happened is really cool.
And you realize that you're part of a really a

(05:18):
really special thing in New Zealand Crecke At the moment,
there's some pretty historic moments and achievements that have been
ticked off in the last couple of years, especially so
to see the ball keep rolling and just show world
that we're not just like a one off side that
can achieve great things. It's a I suppose a group
that's creating a lot of history at the moment.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
And of course the series also marks the return of
Pop's almighty mister Jacob Duffy after being a dad has
finally come back into the fold again. And I'll tell
you what, he's an absolute g See. He must be
great having him back in the fold.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, he certainly is, That's what. That's a great way
to describe. And I haven't had a whole lot to
do with duff if I'm honest, but yeah, getting to
know him a little bit over the last the last
few days especially. Yeah, he's a hell of a guy.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
On out a tie. I don't I reckon. Jadon Lennox,

and no runs conceited. You get in there and cause
a bit of trouble with your tweaking.
