Jon Norman: talkSPORT cricket commentator on the Black Caps' clash against England

After a strong showing in the first day of the third test against England, the Black Caps have not seen as much success in day 2.

Heading to the crease at 363/4 they would have liked to get up towards 500 runs but were bowled out for 438, with the only real contribution coming from Tom Blundell with 30 of 67.

The English batted well to round out the day - Ben Duckett scored a quickfire 113 of 99 balls while Jacob Bethell and Joe Root are still at the crease sitting on 74* and 21* respectively. They closed the day sitting on 223/2.

Pretty deflating after such a great day one of the
deciding cricket Test against England at trent Bridge. For the
black Caps, I guess it's fair to say they were
brought back down to earth obviously the early centuries to
Tom Latham and Devin Conway and the Test middle to
lower orders certainly to not back them up. They of
course resumed three hundred and sixty three for four overnight,

adding just seventy five runs for the final six wickets.
They were out for four hundred and thirty eight. England
took to the crease. We know it's a road to
England powering through to two hundred and twenty three for
two at stumps on day two. Talk Sport editor is
John Norman. Morning to your John after I guess frustration
for England and the bowlers on day one, they'd be
pretty happy with where they've brought this Test too. After

Yeah, absolutely, good afternoon, good evening actually from Nottingham where
the sport continues with the World Cup here Norway against France,
keeping US entertained at the moment. But yeah, I tell
you what, if there's a sliding door moment of this
Test match and possibly is a Test series, it comes
or came right at the end of Day one, the

pronulter over of the day. There was a good bit
of fielding by Shebashir and that meant that Russia Ravendra,
Russia Ravendra had to face the last ball of the
second to last over and not for the first time
in his Test career. He's wicked away. You know, a
guy that is so blessed of natural talent, but every
time I see him play England, pretty much he gets

himself out rather than England getting him out. And that
set in motion the dismiss of Henry Nichols. The next
next ball, two and two wickets, and it meant that
after a day in which England failed to take a
wicket for seventy one overs, they almost walked off the
fielder happier of the two sides. And then fast forward
to today where essentially New Zealand, you know, and they

have been accused of being a timid at times, well
they were timid this morning. Brilliant bowling from Stokes and
England kept the intensity up throughout, but scoring fifty seven
runs on a road in Nottingham just wasn't good enough.
You know, they invited pressure on. They got the wrong
side of possibly a couple of decisions, a caught behind

(02:27):
to Mitchell, Darryl Mitchell and Mitchell Sander didn't think that
he'd gloved the ball through to the slip cordon. But
in and amongst that, this is a team that had
put on over three hundred for the first wicket and
they were batting like they were trying to save their lives.
It was very very strange to watch. And then of
course when England came out to bat, they just went
at New Zealand thanks to Ben Duckett, and again New

Zealand had themselves to blame, Henry Nichols putting down a
really straightforward chance. The third slip with Duckett was eight
and he went on to score his first Test century
and over a year one hundred and fifteen and a
rudder ball and England would have been ahead of the
game for much of the day, which is incredible when
you think they didn't take a wicket for two sessions yesterday.

Yeah, seventy two overs was it for without a wicket
net first innings partnership unbelievable. And Jacob be Ethel's on
his way John seventy four not out now to maybe
another century to his name. I mean, all things are
pointing for a draw for this tista, aren't they, do
you see? Just England just being able to bet for
as long as they want now that they've got that
early pressure out of the way.

The problem for New Zealand is of course no Matt Henry,
no Cole Jamieson and Jacob Duffy of course back home
in New Zealand. So you know they had to call
upon Blair tick Now who unfortunately suffered concussion. And you know,
after watching his three overs he should not have been
on the field. Now, it's very easy to say now,
and we certainly didn't spot it at the time, but

he did, you know, crack a fearful blow after ducking
into Joff for Archers shortball, and the way he bowled
in those three overs was just, you know, was just
way off. He had. We just have to hope he okay,
to be honest with you, he you know, he both
three wild overs then walked straight across the pitch. The
umpire actually gave him a warning, I think, and then

we didn't see him again. Zack Fox has come in
for him, so that's a that's a worry. Put the
cricket to one side. But then New Zealand now I've
got Mitchell Satner who's you know, hasn't bowled for a
while and has had shoulder problems. He was going over
seven and over. Zach Fox is in the side now,
of course he only bowled a few at the end
of the day. Ben Sears, who was you know, wasn't

(04:36):
meant to bowl in this series. He's had to play
and he was going at nearly seven and over. And
what it meant was that Tom Nathan just had to
kept returning to William O'Rourke who was had control and
was causing problems and got a wicket, and Nathan Smith
as well, who bowled well. Can't just rely on those

(04:58):
two if the other three bowlers are going at seven
and over. If that's the case, England would just bat
all day tomorrow and put News in New Zealand with
a deficit of one hundred and fifty or so. And
the way the New Zealand matted in first innings, you know,
I mean this pitch still looks very very good. But
there's no way England are thinking of a draw right now.

(05:19):
And if anything, I think it was New Zealand who
were probably factoring they couldn't lose this game for much
of yesterday. Now they'll be fearful that actually they could
actually go on to lose the lose the match and
