The Hurricanes are bracing for the Rebels to come out swinging in what could be their last-ever Super Rugby Pacific game.

The visitors will be looking to go out on a high after being dumped from Super Rugby due to financial difficulties ahead of the first playoffs in their 14-year history.

Jordie Barrett joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash in Wellington.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildgrave from News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
That's very good that morning to Hurricanes as skipper and
all Black. I might add Jordi Barrett, Jordy, welcome to
the show. How's the tension around your place ahead of
this well, first home semi final about five years I
think it is.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Yeah, morning, Darcy, It's been a great week and it's
exciting for the home quarter final whether year with Plenny
tickets told, so yes, it's going to be a great weekend.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Does your preparation change much ahead of this?

Speaker 3 (00:40):
I mean he's always the natural sort of edge around
training at a business time of the year, but I
mean Clark and have coaches have said us players are
well year to be consistent, so weeks love the so
much of a chune and we've had a great response
this week and boys better accordingly. So Yeah, it's an
exciting waking into the career side.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
I'm glad you mentioned Clark because he's been quite outstanding
throughout the seas and has anty that the calm way
he goes about the way he oversees things, he's not
expecting too much. He just goes through with process. He's
been extraordinary for the Hurricanes this year, has he not?

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah, he's been massive. And yeah it's a continuation of
all the good things Jay Sollin did here. And we've
got some boys now that are started to mature, that
have had almost four or five six years together. And yeah,
Clark supported by Tyler Blondell who's outstanding, Jamie McIntosh, Bry

(01:35):
Evans and Corey James. So there's a great Weed team
there and Clark's outstanding. He sets sets the tone each week,
manages the squad from here one to thirty six very
well and man, he's great working with the leaders. So
we've been very impressed this year.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Interesting comments around. Look, if we don't win, so be it.
We're setting up something great for the future. Do you
bristle when you hear something like that, Jordi Cacili, you're
out to.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
Win it all?

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Yeah, for sure. Players are out to one reprepare to
win every day and if we have anything less than
a win this weekend will be litterally disappointed. So that's
all we're chasing.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
As far as your preparation and you build up to this,
you've had a couple of hiccups throughout the year, a
couple of losses. Do you take anything from those two
fextures and apply them to this weekend?

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Yeah, for sure. We're in a lot through not just
losses this year, but some of our wins, and Clark
is re assured the group and the leaders that at
certain stages of the year we weren't set up exactly
well to perform at our best. This is a long season.
We wanted to give us the best possible chance to

(02:47):
be performing and peaking at this right into the season.
So we feel like we've got most of our ducks
in a row now. Majority of our squad members are
healthy and we're prepared well. So yeah, I guess it's
in our control now to I guess execute later on
today and if we're good enough another week and that's
our focus.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Jordy Barrett joining the program captain and the Hurricanes looking
ahead four point thirty this afternoon. You've got to like
a bit of afternoon football, don't you. That's got to
be good for you. I know the crowd love it.
What about yourself?

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Yeah, players love it. Making me a long time sitting
around till a seven team kickoff and to clear win
this finals foot you in front of expectations. So yeah,
hopefully late Wellington Marvo's son on the back into a
nice night with some dry ball. So yeah, it's a
great time for footy and here we're looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
The weight of expectation. How do you guys deal carrying
that you finished top of the table?

Speaker 4 (03:42):
I expect you do.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
We smirk when Josh Juani ran over and ruined it
for the Blues last weekend. But does this favoritism sit
comfortably with you and the team?

Speaker 3 (03:52):
I guess the external expectation doesn't that weigh the expectation
we have of each other that we've been building since November.
We drive each other every single day to be better
and we feel like we've set ourselves up really well.
So yeah, there's always going to be expectation at this
time of the year and Raleigh, so we expect to

(04:12):
be playing well and hopefully working perform at the business
end of the season, because yeah, that's all been appearing
to do all year.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Rebels, what do they bring? Desperation?

Speaker 2 (04:22):
They've already going to be the best performing Rebels team
in history, I'm sure after what happened last week against Sendura,
they're pretty keen.

Speaker 4 (04:29):
To really push you blokes. Where are they a threat?
Do you think, Jordi, you're given.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
I guess the circumstances are under and well there was uncertainty.
Now there's certainty that they won't be in the competition
next year. There's going to be all sorts of emotion
guys playing for contracts and we're expecting an emotional response. Physical.
I think their ranks third best scrum and the competition.

(04:55):
They're up there with the most tries offset piece off
their scrum and they like to use the ball as well,
so yeah, big big four pack Physical and and Carter
Gordon a couple of their lunchmins in the back. They
throw the ball around, so yeah, they have plenty of
options where they can score points. So it's going to
be a challenge.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Your reward, Judy Barrett for finishing at the top of
the table is well a home game and that's about it.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
You get rolled by the rebels.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
There's no second chances. Are you happy with the way
this playoff system works?

Speaker 3 (05:29):
I won't be diving into into anything around the playoff system,
but look, we're dis grateful we've qualified one and I
guess the destinies in our hands. If we are good enough,
if you're good enough, you'll one. And that's the reality
for teams in one to eight. So the dew, yeah,
I get that.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
We've been talking about this on air.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
I think people want to see a change and no
Super Rugby Pacific are looking at it and that's key.
Always keeping up with the Joneses, which is great and smart,
not climbing into it. Jordy Barrett, you enjoy yourself this afternoon,
get in there, get amongst and rip the rebels to bits.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Thank you very much, Darcy. Thanks mate.
