Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
We're going to get things underway pretty sharpestly. Josh Berry,
a lock for the Blues, is going to join us shortly.
Massive Super Rugby Pacific clashes coming up. Blues at Eden
Park taking on the Crusaders. It's primetime football. It promises
a lot. The Blues are favorites. Crusaders obviously want to
(00:32):
keep the momentum rolling the forty three thirty three beating
of the Chiefs last weekend and put them in a
good position. The Blues, though, want to bounce back after
a final play defeat to the Brumbys thirty twenty seven.
Shouldn't bring that up, should over Josh? But Josh Berry
joins us.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Now.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Welcome mate, This game, mate, doesn't get much bigger than this.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
No, you're exactly right, Darcy. It's a pretty very occasion
and I think sooney our teams up for it, and
I'm sure the Crusaders will be too, So it should
be a good, good fixture.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Can we get into the coaching the training narrative of
about this rivalry white and blue and red and black?
Does that actually get any oxygen during the week leading up.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Maybe not necessarily that narrative, but there's certainly a rivalry
between us and we definitely want to beat them tonight,
and I'm sure the Crusaders will be doing the same
thing like. There's certainly a strong desire and drive to
get one up on the opposition for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
And it's been fierce for all of the teams so
far at the start of Super Rugby Pacific. This competition
just keeps notching up levels, doesn't it, which is great.
It's like the healthy in days of Super Rugby. We've
got some quality football and a lot of bloody good
teams that can beat each other on any given occasion.
Does do you feel that? Do you enjoy that?
Speaker 3 (01:48):
NH, Yeah, I personally certainly enjoy Look at the schedule
and there's there's not really any easy games anymore. You
know your Ossie side's going really well, feed you and
Duryod got a good one on the weekend. So certainly
this year especially as sort of anyone can beat anyone,
so you've got to make sure that every week you
turn up and put in a good shift out there.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
You know yourself playing again, what are your main points,
you've got a hat. What are you want? Thirty odd
games into your career now, so you're not exactly old school,
but you're getting close to being solid in there. What
are your demands? What's Vern said to you about what
he expects and what do you expect to yourself.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
I feel like I've played my best when I when
I keep thinking simple. So just lots of ball carriers,
lots of good hopefully dominant collisions, and then just just
na my naming my role around the back of the
line out, making sure that's real clear, putting some pressure
on them, but just doing the good hard stuff. Well
I guess so yeah, just I don't know. I really
enjoy doing that too. So if I can do that, well,
(02:44):
I'm doing everything I can for my team to get
a win.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Not a good feeling within the team right now around
the fact that you've got Biden Barrett coming back. How
much enthusiasm is that because you're on my making too
much out of one player out of twenty three. Just
tell me to sit down, sit down, shut now.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
But yeah, Bon's pretty special. It's pretty pretty good to
have the back. It's certainly a good caliber player to
pull back into your squad after for a couple of weeks.
So now the boys will be excited to have him back,
but have full confidence and the other boys in our
squad that have done a good job, you know, for
him as well.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
There's a lot of interest in the squad and some
of the players coming through and I look to some
key players that I think have excited quite a lot
of people, which is what happens pretty much every year
in Super Rugue. We we've got someone else to be
excited about. Tell me about Torian Barnes and what he
brings because like we know he tuned up for Canterbury
last year, but wow, has he come on to the
(03:38):
scene or what.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yeah, it's pretty special. It was my I wasn't too
familiar with him down at Canterbury and he turned up
a preseason and man, he was just sent to everything
and the coaches really really liked it about him. And
you can ask any of the boys and in our
group and they say, man, he's certainly earned that spot
through the preseason. He had super physical, good a good
fill off the field too. So I'm pretty stoked from
(03:59):
getting the opportunities he's been getting and he's but to
be feared them. He's earned them through hard work and
going bloody weller training. So it's cool to see him
do that out on the peddic and I'm'm sure he'll
do it again.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
In your stripes. That's the whole idea, and there'd be
a bit of a bit of friction in that as well.
Of course, playing for the MPC side last year and
now up against some guys he probably showered with, so
it should be a good Hey tell us about codymuru Vai.
He's also a player whos had what the same amount
of caps Eventry Barnes both and he played three times
(04:32):
to the Blues. What is that right winger bring to
the occasion.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Yeah, Toby's one of those guys that can just make
things happens, like from out of nowhere. I played a
little bit with him in the NPC and he was
picked up a bit of an injury last year, but man,
he was special when he got his opportunity, like he
saw on You're just happy to see on the team
shop with he because you know he can he can
make something out of nothing, you know. And there's certain
type of players and like good Blues teams in the
past of that players like Cody who can, who can
(04:58):
just lies lighted up and certainly makes anything easier for
me as a poor you know and looking out looking
at on the wing. And he's doing some crazy things
out there, so he's certainly to watch the future, and
I reckon, yeah, if he's yeah, he can go as
far as he wants to go in this game American and.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
What I wanted to see. It's all about the youth
coming on through, which essentially you still part of. I
can still call you youth kind of what are you early twenties?
Of course I can still call you according to the youth.
I got to ask no dramas made you wait till
you get to level fifty six. People start telling you that,
and I love them for it. And tell you one
last thing, John, We've got to ask. We've got to
ask this because everyone's getting asked at New All Black
(05:33):
coach Dave Rennie, how does that make you feel?
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Yeah, to be fair, I haven't other than just watching
what he's done with his career, I haven't had anything
to do with them. But from all accounts, he sounds
like a sounds like a real good applicant for the
job and I'm sure he'll he'll go and go to
his best and do a good job. So you don't
have any and so I scoop for you unfortunately, but
from all accounts of years, sounds pretty good.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Mate. You're honest and polite and respectful and that's going
to take you a long way in your career and
that's all you need to do, Josh Verry, real pleasure, mate,
Thanks so much for your time. I can't say get involved,
get stuck and murder the Red and Blacks, because that's
where I come from originally. So you know, I've been
living here for thirty years and I'm caught between a
rock and a hard place, the blues and the say
(06:17):
what am I going to do? Bro? What am I
going to do?
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Thirty years? I reckon it's time to time to make
a change. It might con Senior Journey Down or something
the Final Store.
