Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
The Black Ferns got their redemption last weekend, completely outclass
in Canada in a rematch of last year's Rugby World
Cup semi final. Thirty six fourteen was the final score,
effectively wrapping up the Pack four championship. However, the work
is not yet done. They've got a huge Anzac Day
Test tonight. It's against the Australians, the Walleroos over on
(00:34):
the Sunshine Coast. Justine McGregor is a winger for the Ferns,
making her third start but her first start, if you will.
She's not off the bench, she's in the starting fifteen
and she joins us. Now, good morning Justine, Good morning
cut massive day for you. That's probably an understatement, isn't it.
(00:55):
You've got the starting role up against the Wallaroos. This
is all of your dreams wrapped into one, isn't it. Surely?
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yep?
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah, it's pretty cool, pretty exciting, and yeah, I can't wait.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Why did you get the nod? Do you think if
you talked to Whitney about what she saw and knew
that said, you know what we're going to give you
this jersey.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
I actually I actually haven't. I kind of just took
it on the chin and accepted it, didn't really ask her,
ask her, Oh no, Yeah, I think maybe the nod
was just giving me more of an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Yeah, maybe what do you bring to the pitch? Can
you talk yourself up? Most players don't like doing it.
But if you, maybe you're not Justin McGregor, and you're
looking at Justin McGregory, go well, Justine can do this?
Can can you do it that way?
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Maybe I'm not really want to both about myself like that,
but I guess some footwork. You can see some footwork,
but of speed. I'm working on my kicking, so hopefully
can bring some double three and give myself a kick
down for your connection on d some maybe some jackals
in there too. I love a bit of sealing the ball.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
So yeah, what everyone needs, they need a winger who
wants to get dirty in the contact. That's fantastic. Just
surely it is. Yep, yep, see that's not boasting. You
just describe what you bring to the park. That's fantastic.
You need to do that. What don't you bring though?
At you're twenty years old. Where do you need to improve?
If you're in an ideal world? What can you lift?
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah, yep, so I guess. Like I said, I'm working
on my kicking, so I know I can bring that
Spallen hand footwork and attack, but I want to be
able to cook, so kickings will work on game knowledge. Obviously,
I come from a sevens background, so I guess, yeah,
just better game knowledge. Yeah, fifteens.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Really presuming that you X seven skirls who are now
playing fifteen's vice versa, because it's all very much into twined,
you spent a bit of time with some of the
X sevens players picking their minds about the best way
to apply your sevens skill to the fifteens game.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Yeah, I think it's different obviously transforming into that game.
But if anything, it's just bringing my learnings and my
taih and my students that I know I can bring
in sevens into fifteen's. Obviously I can apply it to
the edge. In my position, we don't kick a lot
in sevens, so like going back to koking. But yeah,
(03:26):
all I get told by even Whitney or the older
ones and the sevens, they just say back yourself, do
what you do in sevens or do what you bring
at training at home and just have a go and
so it all kind of just flows naturally.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
What's the feeling around your fellow athletes, so by when
they look at what Whitney Hanson has brought to the team,
because it's a different team, it's a different coach, and
you can't respond you haven't probably worked under a great deal.
But what's the general feeling about what Whitney's actually bringing
to this side now with these fresh eyes?
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, oh my gosh. Honestly, she's awesome, like having a
female perspective, a female leader, and just her vulnerability that
she can share. Not saying that males cut, but yeah, yeah,
we're not saying that they can't. But yeah, when he's
been awesome for our group, we're working a lot of
culture and lifting our standards and striving to do better,
(04:21):
shoving to be better and do it for the ones
that came for us. So yeah, I think she's always
striving for She's always making connections with player, very vulnerable
and authentic, which is really cool because she gives us
that freedom and that comfortability is play. Okay, So she's
been awesome for us.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah, it's been a long time, and that was back
when I was young, where if you didn't like something,
you were struggling men. So they said, just drink a
cup of concrete and hardened up. It's just not in
the flavor anymore, is it. And that that free exchange
that the boys are getting like that, come on, leave
us alone. We're okay, we've got hearts.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
It's all right, you're getting there, but we're trying.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
But that's very much the sense every black fern I
talk to they say this, they can be free to
show vulnerability and talk about what they do, and that
that internal connection is massive for the side. Have you
experienced that and any other teams are being involved in
the sevens or definitely?
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah, Like it's not easy what we do. Definitely, we
don't probably come off how we see him on the field.
There's a lot of emotion, non selection. We flood and
sweat on the field, so that emotion comes out. So
that vulnerability piece, I guess is important. And if we
can share that with each other on the field, behind
the scenes and training, that reflects in our game and
(05:40):
if we can trust each other in the area. So
I think that is a difference in the women's game
or just what we bring in the fruit. So yeah,
and definitely like answering your question, that's like all women's teams,
I reckon sevens. Whether that's like school footy, under eighteens,
under twenties.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Yeah, an emotional connection. They understand you understand what that
actually means. I'm all over that. I really am, Hayin.
It's bring real pleasure meeting you and talking to you.
Get it there and cause a chaotic mess. What is
it your third test now for the first.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah, third test and this will be our last game obviously,
so yeah, hopefully we need more to come.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
And yeah, first time straight into the fold. And you've
got a small matter of a couple of series to
tie up once you beat them, the O'Reilly Cup and
the Pacific Fourth Series. So get in there. Job done,
Good on you, Justine.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Thank you so much.
