The Blues are taking the lessons of what works at Forsyth Barr Stadium as they play under the roof in Christchurch for the first time tonight.

They meet the Queensland Reds in the second game of the day and third game of the weekend and play the Crusaders at the same ground in a fortnight.

Kade Banks is getting his first start on the wing tonight for the Blues, and joined D’Arcy to preview the match.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talks'd be.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Super Rugby playing the talk of the town this weekend,
especially if your town is christ Church. Super Round cacked
off with a bang last night when the home team,
the Crusaders beat the Waratars at the new One end
Z Stadium at Takaha. The Blues will get a crack
tonight they play the Battle of the Colors or the
Purple Classes. I'd like to say Reds are taking on

(00:34):
the Blues. You know what I'm talking about. It's an
ANZAC Day fixture and part of it as Caid Banks
first start on the wing tonight for the Blues, so
he thought would get him on the wireless. Good morning, Caid,
Good morning.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Are you going.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I'm going well looking forward? Well, look, the whole weekend
under the roof is going to be fantastic and the
Purple Classes, I like to call it, the Blues hit
the Reds right in the face and you're going to
be there. It's your first start of the season. What
do you put that down to? Why have they given
you the tap on the shoulder do you think.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Yeah, well, I've been working away the last few weeks
obviously is the new Development competition this year. So just
been working away, playing in there, working at my craft.
We had a good season there, went six from six,
so I guess just earned an opportunity through that gets
guard and showcase myself.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
What's the deal with what you needed to improve? You see,
you're really working on your own game plenty, personally from
inside You've had a lot to work on and also
from the exterior with vern so cover those for us.
What are you doing for yourself? What does the boss
want you to do?

Speaker 3 (01:38):
I think one of the men things is just physicality
of my game. Not the biggest winger out there, so
just being able to put my body on the line
and use my footwork to sort of win contact, dominate contact,
that sort of thing. And then just a little bit
of work on Obviously high balls become a critical part
of the game these days, so just been working away

(01:59):
at that and just improving in that aspect.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
When you say working away at high ball, you spend
a lot of time in the park with someone just
drilling uncatchable bombs at you for hours.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, yeah, pretty much. Or you got you've got two guys,
someone puts a bomb up and you've got two guys
and it's your job to come down with it.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
How's your technique changed in that space? Because we know
how important that is, and we've seen that with the
All Blacks over the last couple of years and makes
you almost want to cry. But as far as advancing
your cause and what you can do, what are the
little tips and tricks? How do you besides practice? What
else do you need to do? What's the new theory
around being a good receiver of the bomb?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
You just got to get into a good position. Really,
I guess that's half of it. Get high, jump high
off the ground. And then obviously, if you've got it
catching with your hands above your head, the further you
can get your hands above your head catch it at
the highest point, the better. It's obviously tough depending on conditions,
but we're under the roof tonight, so shouldn't be any
issues there.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
That's good. You play a bit of AFL. You've looked
at that those guys spend most of your time standing
on someone's shoulders catching them.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah, those guys are pretty athletic, But no, I haven't
haven't tried my hand at that. Not really much of
an option over here in his zillam.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
No, well, no, but you could look at them. Maybe
just don't wear the little shorts.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Right, Yeah, you can definitely get some definitely get some
tips from them.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
When it comes to your game and you've been traversing
the island. You're in the Blues twenty four, then you're
shot down at the Hurricane twenty five, and now you're
back and the Blues again. What's the yo, Yo, what's
the deal?

Speaker 3 (03:28):
I guess I've been down to the Hurricanes for a
bit of opportunity, probably didn't quite get that, and then
the Blues sort of off of the opportunity to come
back home and loved it the last time that I
was here. Obviously we won the competition back in twenty
twenty four, and wanted the opportunity to come back and
try and repeat that.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
When you talk about opportunity, do you feel that back
within a comfortable space, I at home again, you're much
better prime to play well, because some players play better
when they're removed from the local goldfish bowl. Where does
that sit with you?

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Probably? Well, I guess it's good for me to be
home because I've got a lot of connections with the
players played with them before, so when you're out on
the field, that makes that a whole lot easier. It
is tough when you go out with it. Go out
on the field with a bunch of new people, you
don't know the sort of intricacies of how they play.
So being back at home, I think it's definitely helped

(04:24):
me a lot, playing with people that I'm comfortable playing with.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
You talked about high ball, and they're taking of it's
going to be a different experience under a roof, under
a roof that no one's really seen. How do you
practice for that?

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I don't think there is a way of practicing. I
think the only good thing that we know for sure
is that there's going to be no wind and there's
going to be no rain, so we shouldn't really have
any excuses.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
It's not going to be freezing cold. That's fantastic. He
talked to us about the Blues this year. And you're
sitting right now, you're sitting up high enough on the table,
you'd be pretty pleased with the progress. Where's the room
to improve? Do you think where's that space? Okay? What's
vern saying?

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yeah? I think we're definitely improving week by week, shutting
the little bits in our game. I think some of
the work ons are just around decision making, a little
bit of work, great stuff. Obviously we're in a good
spot at the moment, but just want to refine those
little things coming into the points the end of the
season so that hopefully come final time we're every ready

(05:29):
to go.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Well not hopefully, you say you will be, just like
that's the one. Now you know you've got to create
that reality for yourself, and I'll stop being so we
were on your cake because I'm sure we got things
to do. Brightness for the game a real pleasure make
thanks very much for joining us, and I hope all
the people in the North sure are either gone down

(05:51):
or they're in front of their TV shouting for you
because you're a good short kid. After all, though I've
been told is there such a thing as a good
short kid? That laugh said at all? Good only Kate.
Thanks for your time, bro.
