The Black Ferns started off the PAC 4 tournament on a high note.

They kept the US on the back foot, landing a comfortable 48-15 victory against the side.

They’ll be aiming to right past wrongs in their next match, facing off against Canada for the first time since their loss in last year’s Rugby World Cup – Canada claiming the win 34-19.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
The Black Ferns forced to work very hard last week
in the opening round of the Pack four Rugby Tournament.
They still manage, though eventually, to comfortably beat the United
States forty eight to fifteen Sacramento. And a couple of
hours time are they're back in action. They're taking on
at Canada. It is a huge match. Still dealing with
the pain of defeat in the semi final at the

(00:32):
World Cup last year thirty four to nineteen the final score,
the Ferns want to right that wrong and pick up
their second one of the tournament. To Mike Vann Kallaney,
ruse is a lot for the Ferns and she joins
us now Marina mikel arnacallany how are.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
You good morning, Darcy on doing well?

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Thank you great to have you on again. It's been
a while since we've spoken, and we're looking down the
barrel of a very big game. I know that you're
a very joyous Wahina and you do play for the
love of the game and that explosion of energy. Do
you also play with revenge in your heart? When you
consider what the Canadians did to you last time around. Ah,

(01:16):
not me.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
I guess no. That game's in the past now. It
was gutting when it happened, But I'm re excited to
have another opportunity to play a quality side like Canada.
We use it to explore and express ourselves in our
new game plan, and yeah, I'm just looking forward to

(01:38):
another chance to play our game.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Did any of your teammates harbor revengere all like you
all uplifted?

Speaker 3 (01:47):
We haven't really talked about revenge at all, so I
don't think so unless some people have that in the
back of their minds. But as a team, we've just
used this week as a chance to build the game
that we want to build, and I'm looking forward to
the challenge that is ahead of us against the new
canon that team. Thenadian team.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Bloody media are so negative, aren't they. I'm sorry about that.
I'll wind the clock back and let's talk about what
you managed last week. You're talking about new plans and
new ways of playing the game, because of course under
Whitney you've got a whole brand new set of tricks
to play and you rolled those out last week, so
that didn't start looking good till toward the end of

(02:30):
the game. But what are the key lessons that you
picked out of that first up game with her as
your coach. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Obviously that was the first game that most of our
team has, the first game of rugby that most of
our team has played in six months, so we were
expecting there to be a bit of russ, a bit
of clunkiness at the start. But after we got that
out of the way, I think we started to steal connections,
feel like combos and just build on the game plan

(02:58):
that we've been training against real pressure and against a
real team. So I think that was to be expected.
But we're looking to grow every game and the more
we get to play together, the better Canadians.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
No, we know what the Canadians bring. Second best team
in the world. You're well aware of that. The Americans
last week they fell away toward the end. But how
good is it for world rugby that they stood up
and had a crack That looks like the levels lifting, doesn't.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
It so much? Yeah, women's rugby around the world is
growing and so every game is a good competition. It
is exciting as a player because we get to train
against and train and play against the best weekend week out,

(03:51):
and so yeah, just looking forward to another opportunity this
weekend to go against Canada and the fact.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
That it's a completely unchanged team that's got to give
you extra strength in your arm, doesn't it.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yeah, that's pretty cool, that's pretty cool. Fuss our commas.
We've been working on and have a good experience.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
I guess you can't control them except outside of what
you can control. So going into this game, if you
look into yourself, where is your what does your control
need to be, What do you have to left? What's
going to drive you through this game line?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
I think discipline will be a key focus for us
this week.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
We need to.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Limit our penalties and maintain possession of the ball. We
know that Canada is a physical side and so we
really want to win the battle of the breakdown, get
them out of the way so that we can unleash
our game and play free and play with flow. So yeah,
I think if we play our game, will remain disciplined

(04:53):
and be able to unleash the firecrackers that we have
all over our team.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
You careful those you get too close. You're got to
stand well back before we light those side. What's going
on coaching wise? You said, it's been a long time
since this team has played together as a unit. Now
you're all away together, which is brilliant. What's the big
feeling outside of the actual rugby with Whitney as the

(05:21):
coach and with these women back together again, some new,
some old? How are you going there?

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Man? This was so much love. I think joy is
such a big value for us as Black Friends. The
legacy of the Black Friends is built on joy, and
Whitney's done a great job coming in and really fostering that.
The connection between our players and our management and connection

(05:49):
to our shared vision is feeling really cool for how
little time we've spent together this year. But yeah, the
feeling is good. Feeling's great.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
I'm all over that one. All about joy, Mike Havana,
Carliny Russ. Always a pleasure. Thanks very much for your time.
Play hard, play fair, play well.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Thank you, Darcy.
