Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waltergrave from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
I'd be after a bye week, have a wee bit
of a rest, you know, put some band aids on,
of a cup of tea and sleep. And the Warriors
are back in action tomorrow afternoon at the NRL's Magic
Round in Brisbane and they are faced with a staunch
task as they take on the Brisbane Broncos in their
own backyard. Regular show guest can I call on a
(00:33):
will friend of the program, Slade Griffin, assistant coach for
the Warriors. It joins us now slate and the team
must be absolutely furzing for the Magic Round. Good morning,
how are you?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah? Good? Thanks having me?
Speaker 4 (00:48):
Yeah, no, Magic Ground is always great weekend. Everyone's in
a good mood. A lot of forty fans out and
about filling up all the pubs and yeah, just obviously
a lot of teams at the same ground on the
same day.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Everyone wants to put on a show. So really excited.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Is it a good thing or a bad thing that
you have to play Brisbane? It's a home game for you,
but it's at their home with their rampant crowd. Is
this good or bad or indifferent?
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yeah, I know I just wanted as someone had to
do it.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
So look, we get a good crowd at sun Corp
all the time, so I'm sure we'll have a few
fans there. They've always supported us in the past. I
know the Broncos will have a really good crowd there
as well. So yeah, really good challenge obviously last year's premiere,
so it'll be a good measuring stick for us.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
How's your week been in the build up to this
because you had a break last week. I've got to
say there's a lot of lost people running around this off.
What are we supposed to do this week? I'm sure
the players and the coaching staff missed it as well.
But it's ideal timing, isn't it. Slade?
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Yeah, it was great timing. The boys had a really
solid start to the year. They've put a lot of
energy into it so they already though it has a
few creaks. So they had three days off and we
come back and just started out prep. Boys had trained
really well this week so had a great session with
our oppose against our reserve.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Great team. Yeah, pretty happy. If we we're at you're always.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
A bit nervous coming out of Buyers, just you know,
getting that physicality back and getting that rust out.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
But I feel like the boys had a really solid week.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Out of the study of troops. How the athletes looking.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah, no, they're looking great. We got a few bodies
back as well.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
So trainings the competitive it's just really competitive, Like the
intensity is really good. So they'll catchphrase, train the way
you play. We're getting really good practice at training.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
And you want to replicate what happened last time you
played some part of it, I'm sure, but they're a
bit you want to leave behind from that last outing.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Yeah, like we knew there was were going to be
desperate obviously in a way game, Like I said, we
had a few guys creaking, but they really they found
a way to win. We defended really well at times. Yeah,
give them a little bit of sniff at the end there,
made a bit harder on ourselves, but the boys found
a way to put them away.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
When you look at the makeup of the team, you've
had a bit of a crazy old week with the
metcalf situation. I don't know what you can say around that,
but has that had much interruption with the rhythm of
the side dealing with that.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah, a bit above my pay grade.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Come on, you're not going to get in trouble. Come on,
how are they feeling? Good?
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Team? Honestly, Lukey spoke to the team. There's no hard feelings.
It's just a decision he's wanted to make. And yeah,
no he's he gets along with the boys really well.
I feel like our boys have just got a focus
on this week's game. It honestly hasn't disrupted anyone. Yeah,
because again, there's no bad blood anywhere. Lukey really cares
(03:42):
about the boys. It's just a decision.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
It's rugby league, isn't it. Things chop and change all
the time. It's something you do about it. I suppose
if you have a wee winge about that, he probably
shouldn't be playing the game.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Yeah. Unfortunately, there's a business at the end of the day.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
People go to look are their families and whatnot. But yeah,
like I said, there's no bad blood on either side.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Where are the Broncos week? Where's the attender under belly
to try and stick a saber into.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, they're a dangerous team. Obviously, they're the Ragning premiers.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Obviously, the class of Reese Walsh and isra Man out
wide rentals kicking game, Like we have to be really
aware of obviously some big forwards up front, Willison and Karrigan,
so we've got to tackle well to be able to
give ourselves a good look at recent that because if
we give them too much space and time, he can
tread anyone.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
So yeah, it's going to be a really hard game.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Our boys are up for it, up for the physical
challenge and obviously, yeah, see see how we go against
old Rucy Walsh.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
How much do you change your structure depending on who
you're actually playing because planning you've targeted this, you understand
where they're strong and weak. Do you adjust my chores
in the case of well when we carr and doing
doing because it's bloody working.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
Yeah, obviously on both sides of the ball an attack.
We got our style and then we might tweak it
that week. Do we feel like we can target this
player or that's edge or attack here and then strike there.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
So there's always little tweaks here.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Of Richie loves a set piece, so he might come
up a trick play for the week. But yeah, defensively
is the same, Like we trained so hard to be
reliable and obviously you got to know what the bloke
is doing next to you. So we got our system
and our processes, and then that week we might adjusted
a little bit to what we see and what cues
they give us, whether we be a little bit more
(05:30):
aggressive or a little bit more slide or whatever you
want to say. So, yeah, but it all comes back
to our principles and how we train our system.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
So the boys really buy into it. We've got a
great defensive first mentality.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
Obviously they're led by Fish and Barney, and they really
push all the hard effort stuff, which makes my job
really easy.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
And one last thing you probably shouldn't be looking to
the future, but oh did you watch Warbrick last weekend? Hell,
he's flying like Superman.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
Yeah, he's an athlete. The old AFL was speaking. I
know they do a lot of that type of practice.
So yeah, he's they'll be exciting when he comes. But
obviously I'll be the cliche coach, just happy with the
group we've got looking forward to. Yeah, what our boys
can do this weekend.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
One day at a time. We all are promises to
be a celebration of the game that we're going to
enjoy every second of it. Good on your sligh, Griffin
go well, yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Appreciate you for having me.
