Speaker 2 (00:18):
Big League Podcast, League podcast How It Play News TALKSB.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
This week on The Big League Podcast, we head into
the sheds in here from has Chanelle Harris, Devita and
Tanner boy on Warriors outstanding season starter against the Roosters.
Michael Burgess is back to analyze the twenty four point win,
examined what we can expect from the Raiders and make
some predictions about Watson Store this season. My name is

(00:44):
Nathan Limb. Let's go be healthy. Suck on that title.
Condenders who The Sydney Roosters got embarrassed by the Warriors
at Mount Spartan Friday, and weren't they superb. The Warriors
played a simple game plan, but it was just so
well executed. Ball handling was clean. The Warriors looked like

(01:04):
a team that had already been together for a year
because they have Tanner Boyd's running game was excellent. Chanelle
Harris Tavita with two tries, Roger tuy Vasaschek's support play,
Kurt cape Well's engine, a few defensive jitters, but it's
only round one. The Roosters, by contrast, were ill, disciplined
and sloppy. They looked shell shocked and frustrated. Warriors fans

(01:27):
have reason to get excited. Twenty twenty six. So far,
so good. Michael Burgess, senior in New Zealand Herald writer, Welcome.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
Back, Thanks mate, good to be back. It's been a
long time. I've missed. I've missed this, I've missed you.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
You've missed me, Yeah, I have.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
I mean, we haven't seen each other for weeks. We
haven't done a podcast for months. There's a good reason
because our second daughter arrived, and she arrived early, so
there was a few weeks in hospital and everything else,
and not much of a preseason for me in terms
of watching footy or analyzing footy. But yet it's fantastic

(02:07):
too to see what we saw on Friday. Yeah, congratulations
to on the birth of your second daughter. What did
you make overall from the Warriors? Like you said you
hadn't seen the preseason. I understand you're bit nervous going
and round one against the Roosters. I was.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
I was.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
I think I was a bit nervous, more nervous than
you too, Like I heard you on the podcast last
week saying you were pretty confident, or maybe that was
because it's a Warrior's podcast. As you said, you have
to tip them. But the Roosters, you know, dangerous team,
been a bogey team for the Warriors, such a stacked
team as well. But the Warriors just took the game
away in the first half. The effort from the forward pack,

(02:42):
the energy from the forward pack, which we didn't always
see last season, especially at Go Media. It just looked
like whatever happened on Friday night, they were not going
to lose.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
You know.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
That's the mindset that stood out for me, just the attitude.
And then the other thing was the accuracy. Like in
the first half they barely made a mistake. So if
you're doing that, you're hard to beat.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Certainly going to hear from Chanelle Housetavida and Tenna Boyd
on that performance shortly. But first, here are the highlights.
Warriors forty two, Roosters eighteen.

Speaker 5 (03:18):
And here we go three meters away the Warriors, Egan.

Speaker 6 (03:22):
Boy heaven Ever, Died, Gats Go scarts, Police Smith again,
get it through net s, Sat Dollar the outside, there's
the disco Sunday. I'm forget their first shot. Warriors go high, Warriors,
Heaven Warriors trying to take us alive. There enough to Pope, Pope, Yes, Boyd,

(03:43):
they got the parts away. Parista Beata shot.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
By there it is turn tag goat.

Speaker 5 (03:48):
To the stacks, walk a dollar, but leap behind her
it as to the Warriors.

Speaker 6 (03:54):
Yes, Pista Beata head puts on the high one Tesha
hair on Sunday, lads go back though, that's got one
till again charts hair half dice Smith. He'll score in
the set.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
He goes.

Speaker 6 (04:11):
Got the parts away, Pard Sunday Star, I love toy Varsashi,
got got the parts away, Paris today you got it
a canab so Boyd coming across point, I got the
parts o' clocks down, two clocks done.

Speaker 5 (04:26):
Yes, Warriors beat in the Sydney Roosters forty two points
too way Team Audio.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Curtesy of sky Sport.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
The Big League Podcast podcast Right.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
New Zealand's herald writer Ben Francis was in the sheds
after the game and has done a superb job to
get us a couple of quick interviews. Let's first hear
from Tanner, Boyd.

Speaker 7 (04:53):
Tanner, Yes, that a perfect way to start you know
twenty twenty cents campaign there where they are pretty convincing
went over the.

Speaker 8 (04:58):
Rest is Yeah, it was good.

Speaker 9 (05:00):
Yeah, obviously very happy, very pleased for the boys, and
it's been a long.

Speaker 8 (05:04):
Pre season and this is good that we got result.

Speaker 7 (05:06):
Apross has got the opening try, threw a great dummy
and spread it strength for any and so how did
it field across of that first right and see.

Speaker 8 (05:13):
Yeah that was good. Yeah, obviously you'll take it. Yeah,
it was a special moment.

Speaker 9 (05:17):
And yeah, I'm just just glad that you know all
the work I've done in the presid and come off.
I feel that the try I've been working on, so
it's good.

Speaker 7 (05:26):
Yeah. I notice you're also running the ball paper but
as well, and I know that's something that you have
spoken about in the past about trying to take Tate
more Orlan has run, so we kind of please with nx.

Speaker 8 (05:33):
Bit as well.

Speaker 9 (05:34):
Yeah, definitely, Yeah, I definitely want to take the line
on more and I feel like it's a strength of
my game.

Speaker 8 (05:39):
So yeah, the more I can do it, the better.

Speaker 7 (05:41):
And we're just in a press conference. Look, we'll be
a he missioned and it was probably your fist game
and the Warriors choosing also see it. There's probably no
doubt you'll probably have things in that in your mind
that you'll want to work on. So you hear that assistment,
how does that make you?

Speaker 8 (05:52):
Now?

Speaker 9 (05:52):
Yeah, it's great and obviously that's what you want to
hear from the head coach and but it is exactly
about there since But I want to get better at
and got the team here to get a better at.

Speaker 8 (06:00):
So yeah, you spot on.

Speaker 7 (06:03):
So the first half, but I think you guys have
all had about eighty six r so very very good.
And the second half of RUSS we're starting to fight
back a little bit. But your lots of the leaders
came up with big defensive plays, so it was good
to see that one of defense, but of working together.

Speaker 8 (06:17):
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 9 (06:17):
It's something we spoke at spoke about the last last
two weeks after the trials. We were pretty disappointed with
our rezilis on out on our line, and yeah, I
thought we showed some some pretty good resilience on our
line tonight, so that it was good.

Speaker 7 (06:30):
And got the Raiders out on next Friday night as well.
So they haven't played yet, you haven't can't stay have
a good look at them, but another big pat coming away.

Speaker 8 (06:37):
Yeah, definitely. They're a great team, a tough team.

Speaker 9 (06:40):
It's always a great contest against them, so I'm looking
forward it.

Speaker 7 (06:43):
And what about that crowd out.

Speaker 8 (06:45):
There for put this game of the season. Yeah, unreal
they yeah.

Speaker 9 (06:47):
They constantly do it, and yeah, it's just such a
pleasure to play in front of them.

Speaker 8 (06:51):
So yeah, hopefully again next week they're there.

Speaker 7 (06:55):
So your combination with Chanelle, how did you find that
out there?

Speaker 10 (06:58):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (06:58):
Great, Yeah, got got a lot of reps throughout the
pre season, so yeah, it's been good.

Speaker 8 (07:03):
We just want to keep building, keep getting wins. That's
the goal.

Speaker 7 (07:06):
I believe as well that forty to a point the
most points of Warriors has scored in their first game
of the season. And also it has been a bit
of talking about the Warriors haven't been the best at
the side of the season, so I guess compared to
like I know you didn't play it can be to
Vegas last season, but of a rough start, is it
pleasing to come away with that win.

Speaker 8 (07:22):
For the first game.

Speaker 9 (07:23):
Yeah, it's always always pleasing. You always want to kind
of get that monkey off the back off your back
a bit, and yeah, start strong.

Speaker 8 (07:30):
So Yeah, it's great, but we can't get carried away.
You've gotta gotta go again next week. You've got another
tough team.

Speaker 9 (07:36):
So yeah, we'll watch it, review it, take the good
and the bad, and then we'll.

Speaker 8 (07:42):
Just get gone.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Actually, Chanell Harris Devita head two tries plus and assist.
Let's hear what he thought of the contest.

Speaker 7 (07:50):
Now, I guess it must be pretty pleased with your performance.
So I think you two tries, one trisis so three
trive mobals on the game and it's pretty happy with that.

Speaker 11 (07:57):
Yeah, I think I'm more happy with just skimming through
that without injury. Didn't get to play any trolls because
I had alf strength.

Speaker 8 (08:06):
So it's good to come out, Yeah, come out the
other end injury.

Speaker 7 (08:09):
Free and with a win, and especially a very convincing
win against Roosters as well.

Speaker 8 (08:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (08:14):
Yeah, they had a bit of momentum.

Speaker 8 (08:16):
They're scared us at the end there, but I think.

Speaker 11 (08:19):
The boys really yeah, rally together and for the strong.

Speaker 4 (08:25):
How you're a kicking game.

Speaker 7 (08:27):
We quite lots of the tries were scored from kicked
from your south antenna as well, So I guess is
that something that has kind of been a work on
during the season because I looked very lethal.

Speaker 11 (08:35):
Yeah, I think we're always not going to improve parts
of our game, and especially our kicking game. I think
when we kick well, it takes a lot of pressure
off our middles to defend and because they're working so
hard for us. So yeah, the least we can do
is put the ball in good spots and let them
too off.

Speaker 7 (08:50):
When you scored that second try, it looked like it
kind of skewed off.

Speaker 8 (08:52):
You're put a little bit.

Speaker 7 (08:53):
I don't know at the time where you were about
to disappointed with that.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (08:57):
Yeah, scoring's ended up working out, but I was aiming
to kick in that ten x ten box and it
just pulled off short.

Speaker 8 (09:02):
So yeah, back to back to work. Already better at
kicking and better at tackling as well.

Speaker 7 (09:08):
Your combination with Tanner, how do you feel that's developed?
But where you touched on the pres conference was probably
Tena's best game in.

Speaker 8 (09:14):
The Warriors, is it? Yeah?

Speaker 11 (09:15):
Yeah, No, he was outstanding just all parts of his game.
Kick well, round well and defended well. And that's that's
all we need to do, is Harves, is be solid
and yeah, stare the team around which he which he did.

Speaker 8 (09:27):
Well, another big t snacks Friday against the Raiders.

Speaker 7 (09:29):
I know you haven't seen Raiders play yet because I
think play Saturday night or I think Saturday. But yeah,
I guess kind of what kind of the s of
these takeaways we're going to be taking this that game,
I think just in that it was a period there
where we just lost our way with the war and
they got a bit.

Speaker 11 (09:48):
Of momentum through the middle and they.

Speaker 8 (09:50):
Were stut to squin some points as well.

Speaker 11 (09:52):
So I think when it gets tough, just trying to,
I guess strengthen our defense and.

Speaker 8 (10:01):
Yeah, just hanging there and complete the next set.

Speaker 7 (10:03):
The defense had come up with some big players though,
I especially had the inter slept on the line and
the reasons of qut on Ta and Kirk cake Pole
came up with a with a big play on defense
as well.

Speaker 11 (10:11):
Yeah, that's not going to be perfect Round one. You
just got to like seven players, got to come up
with some players. And there are two of our most
experienced players, so like we yeah, we appreciate their work
and yeah, they're just big game players.

Speaker 7 (10:27):
So yeah, did you play in the Round one game
against the Bulldogs in twenty nineteen, No, you didn't.

Speaker 8 (10:32):
I think it was.

Speaker 7 (10:33):
I think that before that that's the record for the
most points Warriors scored in a round one.

Speaker 8 (10:36):
Oh true, Yeah, yeah, no, it was I think our
debut that yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Yeah, yeah, that's why I couldn't remember.

Speaker 7 (10:42):
So I just said the check out that that crowd
out there was pretty fantastic.

Speaker 11 (10:46):
Yeah yeah, well, I mean that's like you can't take
it for granted, but like, yeah, it's happening every week
getting sold out stadium, and yeah, we really appreciate the support.

Speaker 7 (10:57):
And the last one I have is what was kind
of your biggest work on during the off season. I
know you touched on you've got to obviously did the
preseason games because of how the carp injury, But just
for yourself, what was that work on?

Speaker 11 (11:06):
Just getting better at the the things I told you
about before, my running game, past selection, kicking game, defense, rarely,
just building my combo with my edge and we're just
trying to get better.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
But just great to hear from both of the Haves
after that game. I think it was Tanner. It was
Tanner's best game. I agree with Webet in terms of
his career with the Warriors. A few wayward kicks from
those two, but otherwise I thought the running game was
really strong, and you saw that. I supposed with the
support playing to change between Shanelle Harris Tavita, Roger ti
Vasa check. Their game plan was simple, but a float

(11:45):
it did.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
It's a big, big moment for Tanner Boyd. Like he
started well when he replaced Metcalf. I think the first
game against the Tigers re memory, they won. He did well,
but then there were ups and downs. I think this
was his tenth game in the first grade side, so
it takes a while. Last last season he was learning
on the fly. Now he's had a full full pre season.
He looked much more comfortable, and he just sounded leaved

(12:08):
in that interview, didn't He just could to hear the
relief in his voice in Chanelle, as he pointed out,
he's had a calf strain, mate. I mean, calf strains
are nasty effect. They didn't play any trials. It was
just great to see him out there come through it.
And he's just a guy that when he's on, he's
just so good at making things happen, you know, just
the way like he puts up the kick for Roger.

(12:29):
There's other guys around, but he anticipates, he goes towards Roger.
Roger gets the pass back try. You know, he's just
a very good instinctive player.

Speaker 8 (12:41):
Big League Podcast.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
This is the Big League Podcast.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Right, Let's go through this game in a little bit
more detail. Warriors coach Andrew Webster just overall says, there's
lots to be happy with, but also a wee bit
to tidy up.

Speaker 10 (12:56):
The score line probably flatters us a little bit, but
at the same time as happy. We scored a couple
of tries at the end. It was a nicer watch
for the last five minutes.

Speaker 8 (13:05):
That's for sure.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Seven tries burge. Normally, when you see a team, I
guess starting off a season and a number of the
players weren't in those trials. As we've mentioned, you see
a lot of handling errors, a lot of disjointedness. But
there wasn't that for the Warriors. I definitely saw that
on the rooster's side of things, but they took the
opportunities on attack. They did get the rubb of the
green sometimes I felt, potentially from the referring the bounce

(13:27):
of the ball, but they were clinical when it counted,
and they scored tries Viakex and just via Running Player
as well, which I was really really pleased with. Yeah,
I mean you've.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
Summed up a lot of things there. I think Webster's right,
it wasn't a forty to eighteen game. I don't think
that was an accurate reflection of how close it was
because you were getting a bit nervous with fifteen ten
minutes to go, the Rooster's coming back. They're twelve points.
There's only twelve points in it, and they in the
second half they were looking good. So that's definitely an

(13:58):
area to tidy up because the Warriors were so on top.
But you know the thing about it's only around one,
so no one's getting carried away. But it makes such
a difference, like when you lose in round one. And
I remember this very well in twenty twenty four when
they lost to the Sharks at home in a game

(14:18):
where the Sharks came back. Next week they lost to Melbourne.
When Bloody is over. Your coats scored in the corner
in that crazy try, so suddenly you're going to round
three year under pressure and they sort of never recovered
from losing those two two games. Now it feels like
the pressures off they can build again. So yeah, so
much to like about just what they did. The combinations

(14:40):
were there, the energy was there, and the crowd responded.

Speaker 5 (14:45):
It was just.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
There.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
I say it. It was almost perfect. Those are the
occasion like normally the Worries, as we talked about, sometimes
can struggle with occasions. It was just it's brilliant.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
It was superb six hundred and thirty five post contact meters.
They started so hot. They dominated territory position very early
in that contest and then got a couple of penalties
culminated in boys opening train and they definitely had the
momentum if we look at the other side of the
ball at defense, for me, it was pretty flaky in
that first half. The Roosters didn't have a lot of ball,
but when they did get ball, they seemed to cut

(15:20):
the Warriors to shreds and it was up the middle
and on the sort of left hand side, and I
felt that after halftime they definitely tightened up a bit more.
I know they conceded more points in the second half.
Ali l'attawa fell off two track tackles which led to
two of the Roosters tries, which I suppose he won't
be too happy with, but he whibs overall on their defense.

Speaker 8 (15:42):
I thought we scrambled really well.

Speaker 10 (15:43):
I thought there were some really good resilience at times,
but then at times, I just yeah, I thought we
gifted them out of the whole NRL. They're the hardest
to tackle, like individually, from man for man.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
Off loads, passing, They're really gifted to that.

Speaker 10 (15:57):
So you've got to be on your game and make
your tackles, and I just felt like we didn't do
that individually enough at times.

Speaker 4 (16:05):
He's right, I mean, and the Roosters are so tough
to play against. There's such an unpredictable team about Ellie.
I would say, let I would say, I'm not too
worried he's he's barely played. He barely played last season.
It's the first game back. I hope he gets given times.
No doubt about his ability. I remember how well he
defended on that night when he made his debut in
twenty three against the Raiders and camera it was a

(16:27):
incredible night. So I just hope he gets some time
because there's no doubt about what he can do. But overall, yeah,
some of the defensive work from people like Jackson Ford
for Sha Harris Cape. Well, the guys in the trenches
just something else.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
Yeah, one percent. Jackson Ford, as you mentioned there, he
actually had the most ackles of the Warriors twenty eight
and also the most run meters in the game. I
don't know, I don't know superhuman performance. I suppose if
we look on the Warriors side of things, sorry, the
Rooster's side of things, it was uncharacteristic really from then
if you look at the personnel that they have thirteen errors,

(17:04):
eleven penalties conceded. James Tadiesco would not leave that referee alone.
He was in his ear the entire time. And then
there was some just bizarre decision making Sam Walker two
sets in a row choosing to kick it on the
second tackle when they were in the riyors red. So
I'm not sure if he wasn't hearing the six again
calls or what was going on there, but it really
looked like the Rooster's just sort of lost composure in

(17:25):
that second half.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
Well, you mentioned the desco.

Speaker 8 (17:27):
He was.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
Haranguing the ref a lot, but he's the captain. But
I thought Walker was worse, like to talk about toys
out of the cot every time. He just had something
to say, I never spoke to Sam Walk I don't
know his background, but he came across as sort of
the private school kid that's used to getting his own way,
the richest private school kid. He might not be, so
it's terrible to say that, but yeah, just I'm so

(17:50):
glad the Warriors don't have players like that with that
kind of attitude. Because he was coming across, I thought, really,
really badly, but it was a good time to play
the Roosters round one because they're always going to be
disjointed with a new lineup with Cherry Evans in there,
and they they'll build and get better. On no doubt,
they'll be right up there. So on reflection, even though

(18:11):
I was worried, a good time to get the boys
from Borondo.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
Andrew Webster says they were far from the finished product.

Speaker 10 (18:19):
If I had a dollar for every time someone went
round one and then didn't back it up next week,
you'd be rich. I'm going to stay grounded. We've got
to realize, honestly, we're going to celebrate. We did some
of stuff, but we did a lot of things that
were just it's not usome.

Speaker 5 (18:32):
And going to improve.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
On talking about the Warriors, there rather than the Roosters.
I should clarify just quickly. Burg The Rooster's put up
a social media post after the game saying that they
do not tolerate death threats players getting death threats after
that kind of performance. I don't know if you saw
anything about this, but just I actually because it was

(18:53):
in the media. But if you are a kind of
person who will sit at home watch a footy game
and get so worked out that you have to personally
message a player something horrible like that, you need to
get a life, You need to something else going on
in your life, because that's just it's unacceptable. Well, those
kind of people have got ye what can you say,

(19:17):
They've got too many weird things going on in their
life to sort of Because the thing about the NRL, mate,
it is the toughest competition in the world, and no
matter the result, the players, what they go through and
precesn't what they go through in the games is incredible
what they all put in.

Speaker 4 (19:32):
So yeah, that just blows my mind.

Speaker 8 (19:37):
Yeah, be healthy, right.

Speaker 3 (19:40):
The Warriors face the Canberra Raiders at Mount Smart on Friday.
The Raiders coming off a twenty nine to twenty eight
Golden point when over the Manly Seagulls in the pouring rain.
The Raiders didn't touch the ball for the first eleven
minutes of that game, and we're down fourteen to zero.
They come back to take a lead twenty eight to

(20:02):
twenty six. Late penalty ties it up again. The game
goals to golden point, and then Ethan Sanders young ha
I think his first start at seven with a long
range field goal and golden point. Don't you love it, Birge, No,
I hate it. It's so exciting. I don't. I don't
understand this attitude from you.

Speaker 4 (20:21):
Yeah, that's not the first time we talked about this, Naith,
but but it's just wrong. It's just wrong. I mean,
there was a fantastic game, incredible game. You know, one
team's down forteen points, the Raiders fight back, Manly's down
forty points, they fight back, and then eighty minutes it's
a draw. We could go home or talking about one
of the greatest games of the season, probably, So why

(20:45):
do we have to have golden point?

Speaker 3 (20:48):
Everyone goes home happy after a draw? Is that what
you're trying to say?

Speaker 4 (20:51):
Yeah, how everyone's happy because they played well, they both
got a point each.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
No one's happy. No one's ever happy after a draw.

Speaker 4 (20:59):
Well I don't know. I mean you probably played different
sport to me. Okay, no, maybe not happy after a draw.
But the point I'm trying to make is that the
parameter Eels or the Titans who will come to paramedeals
got smashed fifty two to four, and the Titans got
smashed fifty to ten by the Sharks, and they get

(21:21):
the same amoutter points I zero as manly who played
out of their skins and had a twenty eight or draw.
So how is that fair?

Speaker 3 (21:31):
I get what you're saying. But the reason the golden
point is in the competition is because when you have
a finish like that, it creates headlines, people talk about it,
people get pissed off like you are, though maybe not
in the same way, and that promotes the game. It
shows up that that cack at the end to win it,
regardless of what game it is, shows up and everyone's
social media feeds. That's what people end up talking about.

(21:52):
If it was a draw, the game wouldn't get as
much coverage.

Speaker 4 (21:56):
That's why I disagree, because actually there's not many draws,
and so drawers become something kind of special and everyone's
talking about wow to see that, what an incredible game,
and you know ended up. You know, there were classic
draws back in the day. I think some people, not
just me, but I don't know, have got Golden Point
fatigue because it happens a lot, and it just always

(22:17):
seems seems wrong, especially if you're on the if you're
on the losing team. I think Golden Point was created
for year people to get people. TV loves it because
people might just tune in, oh shit, it's gone to
Golden pointless for a look. And it's for people with
short attention spans. But frankly, if you've got a short
attention span, doesn't need you. We don't need more Generation

(22:37):
Z and millennials. We need people who who know, we
don't know to die soon. We don't need we don't
need people watching forty seconds on TikTok. We need people
who want to go the game. So yeah, just yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
But this is why the NRL is doing so well
in comparison to rugby is because it's showing up on
everyone's social media. You talk about young players choosing league
over other sports, they're choosing sports that show up on
their phones that they can engage with that does have
those little forty second, ten second, five second clips that

(23:12):
they could share around with their friends. That's how you're
getting visibility. That's how the NRL's getting all these young athletes.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
Part of it, maybe maybe it's part of it, but
I don't I don't know that.

Speaker 3 (23:23):
The NRL doesn't need gene what a load of rubber.

Speaker 4 (23:27):
It doesn't need it doesn't need people short attention spans.
It needs people that want to, that want to. But yeah,
I mean, besides all that, a draw you can talk
about forever. A golden point is so quickly forgotten because
I disagree obviously, but seriously, it's golden point. I'll tell

(23:49):
you what. Golden Point's great. We're on the team that wins,
and it's shit and the worst thing in the world
beyond the team that loses. So although having said all that,
I've asked players about it and I expect them to say, yeah,
we hate it too, and sometimes they don't. So maybe
maybe it's just me. Maybe it's just I think you
just on sitting on an island like Robinson cruz Oh,

(24:12):
shaking his fist at the clouds, the clouds. Yeah, but no,
I think I think deep down, I'm right, and I
think a lot of people, a lot of people out
there right now listening to this also nodding their head
and going yes, Birch, yes, you're right. Can they please
just forget rid of Golden Point?

Speaker 3 (24:28):
What a joke? We'll get back on track. It should
we worry as Raiders. In terms of the warriors, we've
got a bunentrepreneur signings, birds can't Pereira, morgan Gannon. Are
there any players you'd like to see them bring in
or given the kind of performance that we saw on
the weekend, should they just leave things the same? No
new injuries, you know, injuries so far, which is a bonus.
There might be something come up, but I don't think so.

Speaker 4 (24:50):
I think you can't. You just can't change the seventeen
after a win like that, like like you could look
at you can look at someone like Jacob Laban, He'll
be under pressure because I feel like the second row
has got the most depth I can remember when you've
got someone like the Corda to come back. You've got
morgan Gannon, you've got lecquer Hellasima. Whether you know whether

(25:11):
the corder plays second row or prop who knows but
you know you're not getting it like it's stacked in
the second row. So he might be a bit of oppressure,
but you can't change a team after that result.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
I would have thought you.

Speaker 4 (25:24):
Just because there'll be time. It's around one. But but
on Liquor, I don't know what you thought, but I
thought it was his impact was brilliant webs. It looks
like a genius the way puts him on scores off
his first touch, and that just Cemensa's cold hero status.
You know, it takes off his head gear like super like,
like Batman or something. Oh it's lequer He's just goored geez.
But I thought after that he was every time he

(25:49):
got the ball quite off and flat foot and just
trying to beat three players instead of sometimes just taking
it up. So that might be something to work on.
You know, maybe overdid it a bit with the trying
to beat players in the up going sideways. I don't
want to be something to critical of Lecque Helo Sema, but.

Speaker 3 (26:08):
You know what I mean, yeah, one hundred percent. And
I suppose they're still waiting on the health of Mitch Barnett.
It could be this week, it could be next week.
It could be the week after, yes, so he would
could be the other one that potentially comes in. I
wasn't feeling particularly hopeful based off sort of Andrew Webs
was pretty wishy washy about it. So I wouldn't expect

(26:29):
him to come in this week. But if he does,
that's great, and well getting him back is it great? Yep?
Why would it not be great? But the co captain.

Speaker 4 (26:41):
Hold the phone, Hold the phone. I'm not crazy, But
what's the rush if you leave it another week just
to make absolutely sure that he's ready. You've just come
off a good win and you're playing at home.

Speaker 3 (26:53):
I just do not see the rush.

Speaker 4 (26:56):
So I'd give it till till till round three or
round four, because I want Barnett to last the whole season,
and I want to make absolutely sure that his knee
is right.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (27:10):
Do you know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (27:11):
I do?

Speaker 3 (27:12):
Yeah, I know that.

Speaker 4 (27:15):
Sure, it'd be great to see him, but you want
to see him for the season because far out still
having nightmares about when he got into last year.

Speaker 2 (27:23):
The big League Podcast podcast The Big League Podcast for
the biggest league fans.

Speaker 3 (27:34):
All right, Burch, your first quick fire predictions of the season.
You'll be pleased to know that I've gone seven from
eight through round one, with my only wrong peck being
the Broncos who got pumped by the Panthers slightly unexpectedly
in Brisbane. Did you do your own predictions while you're
away with the kiddos.

Speaker 8 (27:54):
I didn't.

Speaker 4 (27:55):
I didn't, mate, but I wouldn't have got seven out
of eight because I had a couple of different ones.
I note that ree've also got seven or got all
but one. Right, So you two were running hot and
you've said a very high standard. Let's keep it going,
but let's keep score this year, because that does add
some add some motivation. Just people who don't realize what
happened last year was I got quite far ahead and

(28:18):
then suddenly suddenly there was no more score. Suddenly there
was no more scorekeeping.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
No, yeah, got what happened is you disappeared for like
a month and then came back and I was like, well,
you know, what are you gonna? You haven't done for them.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
I don't try and dazzle all details, mate, Still I
was that's.

Speaker 3 (28:35):
A key detail. I was a head by we're here
for ages. I was hit by about ten or twelve
and then two podcasts of this year. I didn't keep
a track of that one. Sorry, yeah, and I'm like
you basically part time.

Speaker 4 (28:47):
Remember that's sort of like the days of the cricket
at how Primary, when Nathan's playing with his mates and
it's all going well until it's not. And then unless
not Stock keep score to they boys, let's just have
a hit. Yeah, I didn't go to how Primary.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
Right Broncos Eels to kick off this one in Brisbane?
The Eels got absolutely pumped in the Broncos got absolutely pumped.
So who you go for?

Speaker 4 (29:09):
I mean, the Broncos were right, Penrith were really good,
but the Eels. Who'd be an Eels fan, It's just like,
it's just so sad to lose fifty two to four
in the.

Speaker 3 (29:18):
First game of the season. You go from what is
Christopher Reeve doing? So I'll go the Broncos. Ye agree
with you there, Warriors versus the Raiders. Quite nervous about
this one again. The Raiders are one of the last
three matches against the Warriors, and I'm mainly nervous because
of Joseph Tarpany. He just plays his game of the

(29:39):
season every time he plays the Warriors. He's an amazing player.

Speaker 4 (29:43):
So and the Raiders can't be so confident after the
manly match, So this would be really tired, I'd say,
but I will. I'll stick with the home team.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
I agree with you can't pick against the Warriors after
that performance. Roosters Rabbit O's Sydney Darby a massive grudge match.
These two teams hate each other. You think the Roosters
would be better, and there will be, But I'll go
with the Rabbit I really liked what I saw from them.

Speaker 4 (30:10):
Are the new team. They're they're going to be. I
don't know what you think, mate, but I know that
you're sort of your your second team. They're gonna be
good this year.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
I agree with you there, Tigers Cowboys.

Speaker 4 (30:22):
You know the Tigers had the first round by they
did how how two points? But how like, just like
they never give the Storm the first round by. I
just feel like the Tiger's been picked on again because
it's just the waste of a buy. Like normally a
bye you get a rest. You know you don't need
to rest when you are poor Tigers. I'll go with
the Tigers because Cowboys travel back from Vegas, et cetera,

(30:43):
et cetera. Tigers normally start well in the season.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
I'm going to go for the Cowboys. I thought they
did look okay in Vegas and they have had that
extra week to sort of recover from it. So back
to them Dragons versus a storm storm for mine golden.

Speaker 4 (30:56):
Rule, you don't pick against a storm very often. Although
the Dragons were tenacious in round one.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
I thought they were good. They were all disciplined, but
I thought over all that okay.

Speaker 4 (31:05):
They were. Yeah, they were for a team playing the
Bulldogs are pretty hot, so it'll be closer than you think.
But man, the storm with that spine once it gets going, Yeah,
gotta be the storm.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
Panthers versus the Sharks, and what is the game of
the round because the Sharks looked imperious on the weekend,
and obviously the Panthers with a big win over the Broncos.
This is the biggie.

Speaker 4 (31:30):
There's actually tough ones hey, Rooster's Rabbitdos is tough, Warriors
Raiders is tough. This is quite a tough week to
come back. I wish I'd stayed one more week away,
But I'll go Panthers at home just because they're at home.
But I agree Carnella were great.

Speaker 3 (31:48):
Yeah, cards back against Panthers at home, but it will
be tight. Seagles nights. I can't wait for this one.
Like to see Dylan Brown ponger back in Australia. What
can they do when it's not just Vegas in a
dry track. Seagles were good too for a team that's
people are written off. So I'll go for Manly because

(32:08):
they're Brookie. But actually I think this might be a draw, Nathan,
So can I tip a draw?

Speaker 4 (32:15):
You can?

Speaker 2 (32:16):
You can't.

Speaker 3 (32:16):
I have to include Golden Point. No, well you can
tip a draw, yeah, but that would be end of
Golden Point. Still no score?

Speaker 4 (32:22):
Oh yeah, okay, yeah, that's got to be a year
to have Golden Point for Seagulls.

Speaker 3 (32:27):
Then I'm going to go with that night. So with
the Knights, I really like that spine that looks so
is so so good in Vegas. Dolphins versus the Titans
to finish off the round.

Speaker 4 (32:39):
Dolphins to mind you Titans. Unfortunately I was. I was
hopeful for the Titans. I really want to see them
turn around, and they might.

Speaker 3 (32:45):
I don't know, it's too fa. I never took the
Titans and they'll never turn it around. I've got a
lot of time to their coach, but yeah, Dolphins. Well,
thank you Michael Burgess for your time, you list from
your insight and your return to the podcast. You've been
fairly annoying today, but that's okay. We'll have another go
next week. Thank you to producer Mark Kelly. Thank you
