Speaker 1 (00:00):
So David Carter joins us. He's going to talk about
the Ravens down Canterbury A and P show, happening November
eleven to thirteen at the Canterbury Agricultural Park. But before
I do that, David, when you're not doing that and
running around doing saving iconic institutions like that, you're a
farmer on Banks Peninsula. Have you got snow there?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
We've got just a skit of snow. It's nothing serious here,
pretty unpleasant cold out there as we were feeding out
this morning. It's winter. It's sort of what we learned
to put up with. I do know the local road
to christ Church's Dires Pass road has been closed because
of snow, so that'll upset some of the computers. But
we're still able to get to christ Dured via either

(00:44):
the tunnel Road or Gibbie's Pass. So nothing too serious.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
It'll be way too early for you to be lambing
on the porthills.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
We're pretty close to lamming. We're about a week away
and everything's talking good. We've actually wintered very well, so
this nasty weather out of the way pretty quickly and
grass starts to grow.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Hey, David, I know you used to be. I don't
know whether you still are a keen joggy. Do you
get out and jog around the sheep at lambing time?
Do you do a lambing beak? Can you still catch?
Are you?

Speaker 2 (01:13):
No?

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Not?

Speaker 2 (01:14):
On these hills, these paradiles are now faster than I am.
I've got a good dog or two to help me,
But no, we don't go near them at lambing time.
We put the us out there and they tend to
do pretty well without us interfering with them.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
So the Ravens down Canterbury A and P show, one
of New Zealand's well, one of New Zealand's two biggest
fertilizer co ops, has gotten behind you. You've done a
good job because only a matter of a couple of
years ago, the most iconic amp show in the country
was in danger of disappearing off the face of the earth.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
It's certainly got itself into a mess. It's a slow rebuild.
I got involved at the end of twenty twenty four
after the show actually been canceled by the previous operators
and we said that's not good enough. You cannot have show.
We can get without the show, So we had a
much reduced show in twenty four, but at least we've
got it underway. It was bigger again and more successful

(02:08):
in twenty twenty five and we've been working hard. Now
on twenty twenty six Orch I think will almost be
back to the old Canterbury Show that most people knew.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Over eighty percent of the trade stands have already sold.
That's pretty good.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, we're delighted with the progress there. And to be
fair to some of these exhibitors, they were worried about
whether we were going to survive. They've now seen that
we're coming back to our roots that were got some
resilience back into the organization. We've got some financial stability,
so people who hadn't been with us before are certainly
now coming back and that's just going to make it

(02:43):
a far greater spectacle than it has been the past
company year.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Well, you're putting out a carrot there for the punters
to go along. David or Sir David Carter. November eleven
to thirteen, Wednesday through Friday, because tickets are on sale
on September the first. For the first two weeks of September,
you'll get a fifty percent discount on tickets for the
show half price.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Isn't that encouraging to get people get there? So we're
doing our best that we can to make it interesting,
to make it cheaper for people to get there. What's
become very imperent to me is I've become involved. This
is two important aspects of the Canterbury Omp show. One,
it's a very important social opportunity for the farmers of
Canterbury to come and see people they probably haven't caught

(03:30):
up with since the last show. The other important part
of plays was bringing rural urban people together. So being
associated with christ Church and the second largest city in
New Zealand, there's a lot of urban people who get
their touch of rural New Zealand by coming to the
show over those three days.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
As a former Minister of Agriculture, you served a long
time in Parliament. What do you make of what's going
on there at the moment. We've been talking about the
Opportunity Party today with Bruce Kotchel and their tax policy.
I think it's crazy. It's certainly crazy for the primary sector.
But as that they seem to be of certain parts
of the of the media and the voting public seem

(04:12):
to be enamored with Qlo Wong and.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
What they need to do is just think about how
they got enamored with one Jacinda Odurned back in two
thousand and seventeen, similar sort of person looks okay, listen
to her. They don't say much, but people were enamored
with Jasindo Adurn in twenty seventeen, and look what that
costs the country. So I think people need to be

(04:35):
very careful, have a good look at the policies of
the Opportunities Party. They they're mad, you know. They're policies
that will send New Zealand backwards with higher tax rates,
land taxes, and of course they make every New zealand
or a beneficiary.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
How's that going to Yeah, I know, I'm totally with
you on that one. No argument for me. What are
you making of your old sparring partner, because you and him,
there was no love lost between the two of you.
Let's be honest about it. You and Winston Peters, what
are you making of what he's doing at the moment.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
A very canny politician. And it's not about New Zealand first,
it's about Winston first. He's playing the game very well
for Winston's purposes. I hope people again will have a
look at some of his crazy ideas. The one he
came out with recently. He's going to buy back the
bank in New Zealand. That is just not possible. He's
now paying us all to have kids. Maybe it's a

(05:27):
bit late for you and me, Jamie, but I'm not
sure that'll make much difference to the birth rate. People
need to be very careful about what policies are promoted
by political parties and actually think about the cost of
those the longer generation.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
So David Carter, thanks as always for your time. The
Ravenstown Canterbury amp Show Wednesday the eleventh through to Friday
the thirteenth of November
