Farmstrong's Ambassador has been chewing the fat with farmers at Fieldays. The former All Black captain talks about his move from sheep and beef back to the family dairy farm and, of course, a bit of rugby.

It's cool having people come in and just have you
on and work out, you know, what's been happening and
what they've been up to. And it's always nice to
just do that to the fad and have a cup
of tea and see where everrun's at.

You were sheep and beef farming and hawks play. I
think you sold that property. Had a beautiful property.

Did you sell it? Yes, No, we've just moved back
to the family farm.

So the which is a beautiful dairy farm too. I
might add I've been lucky enough to have a look around.
So how many whitelock boys are milk and cows there now?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah, so we've taken over the one half of mom
and dads and mild brother George's on the other half.
So we're totally separate, but obviously sheer information being next
all to each other.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
And is there a bit of competition.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah, there's a friendly competition. And I hate to say
history is repeating with the cousins being the next thing.
And they all had cross country the other day and
they all did pretty well, and they were all working
out who got first and who got second, and they're
not teasing each other, but they're just suddenly having little
digs at each other who did well and who probably

could have done.

So it was a strategic move to get away from
sheep and beef guard to dairy.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
I was just a really hard decision.

I've actually ran into a couple of neighbors that walking
here before, and I really loved our time and hawks Bay,
the people, the weather, the community, the style of farming
really enjoyed, and it was just that that pool of
the family history and having you know, a brother next
door and you know, the beautiful family, having that rural

upbringing that we had of just bucking down the road
and kind of disappeared for a couple of hours. No
one really knows where you are, but you know that
you're either here or here or here.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Plus it helps that your old man Braiden Braiden and Caroline.
Sorry about that, Braiden, if you're listening, it helps that
he's that they together have created a beautiful farming operation
for you guys. Right. I live well, share well with
Roland Smith. Here's another great Hawks bay man, and I
think he's here tomorrow. Going to try and get him

You know, he'd be awesome to come on the show.

He's amazing, amazing man, achieved some amazing things. His lovely
wife is exactly the same. I had to share a
couple of sheep in front of him, so it was
a little bit embarrassing, but we got.

The wall off them. I didn't cut them too bad.

And it's always good when you've got a camera that
you can kind of make a few things out and
make it look pretty.

Okay, a couple to finish on big game of fundy
here on Friday night. Of course you're a crusader man
through and through. They will start or will they start
as underdogs against the Chiefs?
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Yeah, massive game.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
I think it's a time of year that no one
really knows what it is and it doesn't matter what
the forum has been beforehand. But obviously Chiefs at home,
so they probably got the favorite tag on them, and
you know that they deserve to have that because they've
been playing well.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
And that's why.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
You know, in the competition, if you play well, you
get that home advantage and most teams make most of it.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
And I think the Hurricanes will tidy up the Blues.
Can any either of those sides speak the Hurricanes if
that was to come to pass.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
I honestly think with all the games, it doesn't actually
matter who's playing. You know, through my career I was
lucky enough to you know, you get it right a
couple of times, and it's only by a small percentage
you come out on the right side. If you get
it wrong by only a little bit, you can get
a few points put on you. So it's one of
those ones that it's a beautiful thing about sport. It

doesn't matter what the form says, who's hot favorite, it's
on the day and sometimes eighty minutes can separate teams
pretty quickly.

Now not allowed to duck for cover. On my final question,
the All Black team will be announced very shortly for
the June series. There'll be no Scott Barrett, which is
a real shame because I think he's a great lock
and I know you locked a lot of rugby scrums
with him, So bearing in mind he's not there, who
are the two starting locks do you reckon for the
All Blacks for the June or July series?

I think you and I would be a pretty good combination.
I'm not sure it's going to play tight head and
who's going to play loose head, but I'm sure we'll
work that out at training on the first day.

No, no, not you and I. Come on, seriously, there's
so many good young locks coming through. The young guy
from Canterbury for in.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, so Jamie. Jamie's been playing well.

But I think that's the cool thing is there is
actual competition there and working out with a new coaching
up who they want to pick, who they can see
developing in. Sometimes it comes down to combinations. You know,
have these people played together before?
