Okay, wrapping the country with Mondays where the man Phil
Duncan Phil, there's been some awful weather in the past
couple of weeks. I'm not going to look in the
rear vision mirror. I want to look forward for all
those people who are in recovery mode. After all this
wet and all this flooding. What do you got lined
up for them this week? I only want good news.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
By the way, well I can do that. We've got
a balancing act coming up now. So we had a
lot of southerlyas a lot of southeasterlyes that have been
blowing through and that's bored and all this rain to
the eastern side of New Zealand. But this week we
switch around to westeries as we would normally expect, and
so that's going to bring in a cold front that's

(00:40):
already arriving today in the South Island's west coast, thunderstorms
in the southern half, heavy falls moving through this afternoon
and tonight, so there will be some rain. That front
falls apart as it crosses the North Island, so there
will be some wet weather, but not a huge amount.
And long story short, the eastern side of the country
has a relatively dry week this week, and most of

the rain is on the west coast, and most of
that rain is south of Hokatika.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Well, that's exactly what they want to hear. Are you
surprised that people breathlessly talk about low temperatures in the
middle of July?

Speaker 2 (01:16):
No, you, Sam, though the yes part is yeah. Some
of the new stories get silly when they talk about
places that are in the mountains getting cold in winter.
But I was talking to a reporter, Paul Gorman at
the weekend because he lives in christ Church where there
was a frost. I was in Auckland and there was
a frost, and we're both just saying it kind of

(01:37):
it feels a bit like the past, and it gets
a little bit exciting to see a frost these days
in some parts of New Zealand. So yeah, I think
it is a normal time of year to be getting frosts,
and they've been a little bit absent in some regions
up until more recently.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Hey not our Nino of super al Nino. Earth Sciences
New Zealand have come out strongly about this one. Is
the jury still out for you?

Speaker 2 (02:01):
A little bit? Still? I think the concern is certainly
going to be what the weather pattern in New Zealand
does from the middle of spring through to autumn next year.
So we're we're still in winter mode where it's very chaotic,
but I think once that spring pattern starts to arrive,
that's when we can really seriously look at it. But
I do think what's happening in the Eastern Pacific is

really extraordinary. To see sea temperatures eight degrees above where
they should be.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Yeah, it is going to be very interesting times. I
