Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right, the All Black team's been named. I know it
wasn't on the Midday bulletin. I'm not quite sure why,
but anyhow it was embargoed. Till then we have gone
straight to the horse's mouth because we're going to chat
to the sire of two of those All Blacks. The
third one is injured and unavailable, Kevin Smiley Barrett on
his dairy farm. He's just started carving in Taranaki. There, Smiley,

(00:21):
I've just flicked you the All Black team. If you
had a chance to read it, Good afternoon, thank you.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Good afternoon, Jamie, and listen briefully, you're not gonna give
me I meet Jamie feeding out there, run off the morning.
I've just got overed.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Well, I know you've got a day job, but well,
I well, I was trying to think you're my connection
at the moment. Well, you're my longtime connection to the
All Black Scott obviously disappointed that he can't go because
of injury. Jordie and Bowden are both there. But we
have three new caps and one of them's a Taranaki boy.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yes, Josh Jacob, you tell he deserve you? Is he young?
Up and coming here, got a huge, huge, huge future
in front of here. So no, he'd be delighted now,
no doubt.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Yeah, yeah, he's coming down to play for the Highlanders
next year. So he's one of three new Caps. The
other one the other one is or the other ones
are prop Siali Lawaki and loose forward Sema Sisi two
po toylo. I hope I got that right. I don't
think I did. But the good thing about him is
I know a wee bit about him. He's been playing

(01:32):
for the Stags. So we've got two all Blacks when
I say we the South and Staggs of course Ethan
de Grootz and now this big barn storming loose Forward.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yes, so you the Stags be's. Unfortunately they're not going
to see too much of the mate, but you and
our great was family and you got on obviously for
for them to put the black usy on and no
better place to make you, Dave Bourne, South Africa.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Yeah, and young Jack Ta are perhaps a wee but
unlucky not to get the call up as the fourth
hawker that has gone to George Bell. So basically, I
mean in terms of the All Blacks, it's the it's
the squad that played in the nation's Championships or whatever
they call that competition, returning all blacks, Olie Norris, George

(02:19):
bell As I mentioned, great to see Farbi and Holland
back in there. Ethan Blackadder. There's a man who I
reckon will go pretty well in South Africa, Timothy Timothy Tavatavanai,
Rico Juanni's back and Ammoni Naruwa. So what do you
make of that, Smiley?

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah, it's here's obviously a lot of experience in there,
and obviously the new boys and you know that. You
know we haven't played South Africa team for and supersides,
so I wasn't there four years, so you know, these
boys are really going to know what the South Everygans
are about. You know, playing over there. They agree on
to these teams, their crowds, et cetera, in the environment,

(03:02):
so it's going to be tough, Jaman, no doubt, and
I'm sure like we Racie. I think he was planning
the plot net test and aucas sixteen months out I
heard and after they lost that, yeah, they were very
he thought. I had had a coffee with someone that
knew him very well and he thought, well, how might

(03:24):
I get the boys up for Wellington and the best
way to do that is is bring to bring the
next team in. I think he kept two players or
maybe maybe a couple more, but yeah, just bought, brought
a fish team and and what do we do. We
literally rolled out the same team. I think we were
brought in Leroy Carter and someone else. And you know

(03:46):
a little behold the media said we gave up, well
flip me days. They gave up, you know, but the
boys were absolutely perhaps their teach was empty. They just
as they said, nothing left in it, you know. So
you know, I'm sure I've taken to all blacks of
coaches have taken some lessons out of that, and you know,
turning over their four tests or three tests there, it's like,

(04:09):
you know, we get the World Cup, you've got three
big matches in a ruff, you make the final, you
know so, and you might come up against South Agga
and well then but you know, playing South Ega four
times in a row, there's no way we can roll
out of a twenty three week in week out because
we'll just get treated the same simple as that.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Yeah, you raise, you've raised a very good point because
that was to my mind anyhow, the highlight of the
All Blacks calendar last year, defending that record against the
box at Eden Park.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah, sure was you know so and yeah, I mean yeah,
the boys obviously, you know, I mean there's very fine
marys between you know, international sides these days, and you
know you can just sort of see, you know, if
you're off your game, you know you can you know,
any team can put forty on you know, lead alone.
You know, you go back to the Super Rugby Final,
you know with the Hurricanes just blew the Chiefs of

(05:00):
of the Park. It was just you know, you just
win a teams on song in years it's stores can
just get out of hand pretty quick, you know. So yeah,
I know, really looking for the challenge. And I'm sure
the boys and the team and you are the coaches
are too.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
So well, we're not going to run out of hookers
or props on the tour, Smiley, because we've got four
hookers and let me count, and we've got eight. We've
got eight props, so we've got plenty of depth there,
five locks, lots of Lucy's. We're only taking three halfbacks,
so I probably should run through the team. In fact,
I will do that now for you starting with the

(05:39):
hookers Amua, Taylor, Takeiaho and Bell props to Group Bauer
and Nemea, Norris Lomax, Newall, Tossy and the new guy,
Ciali Lowaki to Puvi Chwy Polo to Lord Darry Baby
and Fabian Holland. Five locks loose forward's Larchye part Ethan blackadded,

(06:01):
good to see him back in there. Jacobson segna savea
who won't play in the first few games, but we'll
captain the side, Satiti and Tupo, Taoilaa, the new guy,
half back's Roy Guard Ratama and Preston. Five eights. There's
four of them in there, including your Taranaki, Bloke, Josh Jacob,
Reuben Love, Bowden, Barrett, Damien Mackenzie. Midfielder is Barrett's Quintepaya Proctor,

(06:26):
Leonnart Brown, Tavatavanawai. Outside backs Clark Finny Youang and Ofa
Carter moreby Jordan Rico. Juanni's back as is Ammoni Narawa.
So there you go. That is your all black side
with three new Caps. Smiley carving, how it's how's it going?
Early days?

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Early days were crocky is what we've got in there.
We must we have a sixty sixty seven a year,
so we're going underway. Yeah, I'm in charge with the calves,
so keeping the sheet there and then that's all going good.
A couple of cold days last week there, but yeah
it has nice and olds today. So we had a
frost this morning actually, which you don't get too much

(07:07):
of a frost up the sides of the hedges. And yes,
i'd say the other side of the mountains, she would
have been a white out at the So Jamie is carving.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Is carving something as a dairy farmer you really look
forward to. It's the new harvest effectively for a dairy farm.
Or is it something you dread and you've just got
to get through it.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yeah, but both really. I mean when it's rain you're
sort of shitty weather. It's always tough, you know, getting
out there, and you just want of feel for the stock,
you know, So yeah, and the calves, you know, especially
if it's really wet, you just got to get out
there and you know, make sure they get around quick,
you know often, so you make sure that the newborn
calves are get up and get a feed, you know.

(07:47):
If they don't, you just make sure they get clost
them into them, But isn't that it's year and it's
it's some days are getting longer, you know, So it's
it's always something you look forward to.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
You You would have been relieved at that Global Dairy
Trade auction last week up one point five percent after
three drops in a row to kick off the new season.
So I think that was a bit of a sirah
leaf breathed by dairy farmers around the country.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Yeah, heah, look to too, Jeremy. I'm just talking to
counterparton and Ireland there last week and their milk price
has dropped a food here, which is yeah, that's that's
that's that's a big hit from last years so they're
really filling it over there, with obviously costs on farm
costs going up as well. So yeah, and here no
doubt here, you know, it depends on what's happening in

(08:35):
the Middle East over the hell long this lingers around
for you is we're going to get no relief here
ether you know what the farm costs.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
No, I don't think so is it a good time
to be an organic farmer like you are?

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Yeah, well we've still got the same we're still being diesel, Jamie,
I'm not totally electric here yet.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
No, but you haven't got the same fertilizer costs, have you.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, Yeah, that's right. Yeah, to a certain extent here
most of you know the biological stuffs made here. We
do have a bit of important stuff. But yeah, it's
self had to polish the theater of it. Yeah, most
of it's Yeah, they can keep obviously, obviously that's going
to go up with in a diesel these Obviously you've

(09:17):
sat your carriage and you're spreading, Jeremie. Yeah, it's it'll
go up a goble, but not significantly like their conventional boys.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
And congratulations on having two of your three lads who
have made it through. Obviously Bowden and Jordie Scott can't
make it due to injury. How far to see you
away from a comeback after his back operation?

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Yes, god, it was six weeks. Yes, his head is up,
so you know he's trucking fine. He was running two
weeks ago. He was up here for the Tyrannicky boys.
You're just training with him, just like stuff, and I
haven't touched base them nextly for a few days, but
he's he's slowly getting into doing mate, here, so three
months a minium mother for his operation to be back.

(10:03):
So hopefully we get him up here for a couple
of turn Taranaki games would be great.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
Hey, Smiley, he could do some weights in the carving
pen with some of those calves around, you could rehabilitate
on the farm. Save you the job exactly.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Well, he is coming up here to play for Taranaki,
you see, so he can he can just you know,
tune back the clock. But you know when I was
up at five in the morning and you know, milk
and kews and feeding calves, and then then I was
going to play footy for Taranaki and they'd probably get
me and I'd probably fall asleep on the ground for

(10:39):
headlads and fall asleep. And then when Robin did the
rest of the week. But then I come home after
the game to milk here.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Well. I always remember Smiley going with my mate Lee
Piper up when we were commentating the Southland team going
up to Taranaki there. What's your lovely stadium called Yarrow Stadium? Yes, yeah,
and like a two thirty kickoff or whatever for the
MP the South and versus Taranaki and basically everyone went
home at halftime to milk the cows.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yeah, it's it was, but yeah it was, you know,
I mean I was fortunate enough to have you know,
Robin here. Yeah, just longer.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
Hey, well you're still you're still fortunate to have Robin there, Smiley.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
She does all the work exactly. Yeah, and just about
time we got two boys and the team, or one
boy would have been great, would have been going to
say it everga, but yeah we did it were things
probably changed, wouldn't be going here. So it's got a
bit of a talk to them. I really need him here.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
Yeah, all right, There we go, Smiley Barrett. Thanks for
some of your time. There we go, Smiley Barrett talking
about the all black team, which has just been named
